Behind me here and we have seen dozens of people streaming out of here over the hours and so many people have are just angry frustrated upset not knowing what they were gonna find when their kids showed up when they came to get their kids. I should say taught to grandmothers talk to parents talk to one man in particular whos picking up his four year old daughter who said she was blissfully unaware of what was going on thankfully, but once you guys listen to some of what he said to me so i come at this time normally to pick up my daughter and the streets were closed off and the police said theyre gonna bring my just gonna cart everybody down the street and i just knew that was in the case. I heard about the shooting at the high school and my daughter to elementary school. So i just had to figure out a hey to come and come and grab did you have any fears any thoughts running through your mind . Obviously your daughter. Shes so young. Hey, youre anxious. I mean you hear about this happening all the time. My new was a high school. So there was likely no issue with my daughter, but this is the closest its ever got home. So its a its a surreal feeling and you start to feel panic. Youre like i just want to get to my daughter streets are closed off park at the bottom of the hill walked up, you know, just got to do what you got to do to put your your eyes on your child and then go from there. I know obviously your daughter amara. She said shes just four years old. She might not really be cognizant of whats going on. How was she when you picked her up. Did she seem unless clueless fortunately clueless. She just happy to see her dad and not even curious as to sort of why we doing a different routine today. She hasnt hasnt connected yet which is which is good. Well probably just keep it that way and i know sir you say that this is something that happens. Unfortunately a lot not just here in the bay area, but around our country as a parent. Is it something that you worry about assisting now that has hit a little bit closer to home it is i have four other children that go to another school and last year. We started thinking through and talking to the school about whats your whats the whats the protocol when a school of shooting happens . And do they have policies in place wasnt quite as tight as wed like my daughter just started to go into this school local academy. Eks ago, so were not abreast of what the protocol is on a shooting seems like they handed it well today, but its now, you know top of mind. And guys one thing i want to pick up on there is what he said when he said, you know, this is just something i never thought would happen here. You hear about this all the time other places around the country even other places here in california, but we never thought this would happen at this school at my child school that something i have heard repeatedly from so many parents here. Were still just in a state of shock one mother telling me she goes i didnt know what i was gonna get when i came to pick up my son and im not a parent myself. I know many of us at abc 7 and many of our viewers certainly are i just i cant imagine the type of fear that that must just strike in the very core of your being saying one mother telling me, you know, i just had to hold my child and that those words just so powerful something. Ive heard just repeatedly out here. We are waiting for more information from the Oakland Police department sometime in the next half hour. So we are gonna stay out here and wait for that. She has spoken to both parents grandparents Community Organizers andlso council from so many people many of whom have almost a new sense of resolve to do Something Different to stop this from happening again. Absolutely, dan, but i want to clarify before that. There are actually four schools on that campus. But yes as you mentioned technically there are three because that fourth one is an independent study program. So no students were on site, but the students from the other three schools were brought here at this church saint or outside saint cuthberts Episcopal Church just to be reunited with their parents at a lot of them were here. In the parking lot area and it was a sight to see it was very powerful very emotional to see there the parents are hugging their kids and just being there for him in that sense of relief right when they showed up but you know, and then you had the teachers right the teachers the principles the staff all in the you know, myth myth of amid this confusion. Im might add, you know, just trying to make sense of all of this one of the people who showed up here was a Community Leader here nina carter and you know what i got from her was that sense of frustration anger about all these shootings happening in oakland and nothing seems to change listen to what she had to say. What what are the calling you obviously that they scared and they not safe and education is not important. They life is not value. So they telling us all kind of stuff but nobody is listening to the kids. And so you know, what stood out again for me here spending several hours with all these people here with the students, you know, was that sense of also being very afraid, you know. It seems like that school may or may not open tomorrow, you know, one of the Council Members said that it wasnt going to open tomorrow. Well see but you know, you practically see an empty lot right now and thats because the teachers and staff were have been allowed to return to the school and this happened just about five minutes ago because a lot of them had left their personal belongings remember they were quickly evacuated what many of them wanted to again get their stuff get their cars out of there and they have just been within the last five minutes. I might say were allowed to go back to the school to retrieve their stuff right now at the moment. We also saw a chaplain from the Oakland Police department, and i asked them, you know father. What are you doing here . What what are you telling people . And he said im just approaching people and to ask them how theyre feelingre and im here to help. So again, just a lot of frustration from this Community Anger understandably so about what has been happening here and that sense of like what can we do . What can we do to solve this issue . Its and and the consensus here. It has to stop and it has to stop. Now back to you guys a lot of frustration as well as a fear and anxiety there because we keep seeing this happening again and again, before you go though, i would like to see if you can give us a sense for what they say, right . They say its got to stop but what are the solutions as they see it because weve been reporting on oakland chief Laurel Armstrong saying youll be adding officers right and more Senior Officers more in the criminal investigations unit. But is that the path they see as being what will help these kids. I think a lot of people said to me today we need to put more resources into the schools into our children. I said, well, what does that mean . Well more programs. They didnt necessarily meet say lets bring more Police Officers. Remember, you know the history here. Is that oakland . Which for the a very long time had a police their own Police Department here within the Oakland Unified School district that has been gone that the community wanted that god and the Police Academy is also there was there was talk about reducing the academies. So were not yet. Theyre hearing parents say or teachers say, you know, we want more police what i did hear was we need more more sense of security. Within the schools programs support and we need it now where you know, it could be from the state. It could be from the federal government, but oakland, they say clearly is in need of help. Okay. Leanne thank you very much. Lets go down to abc 7 News Reporter ryan curry live at Highland Hospital. What have you learned ryan . Hey, dan. Hey, kristen, were expecting really in any moment now an update from hospital officials regarding the condition of the members who are being treated inside Highland Hospital. They say there are three people currently in Critical Condition here at Highland Hospital that were involved in that shooting earlier this afternoon. We do know that there were six victims total and three of them are being treated here. We got here around the afternoon time in some members of the Alameda County Sheriffs Office and the local Police Departments wall the difference between being treated inside and what were waiting on right now from hospital officials is really just an update from those inside. They mentioned they were in Critical Condition, but we need to know if that condition has changed in any sort of fast if possible if they are now in any more of a stable condition or if they are still in Critical Condition, that is what were waiting on right now, they kept pushing that information back further and further throughout the afternoon what they mentioned us right now is that they dont want people to congregate here at the hospital due to privacy reasons they want able to respect the privacy of the families of the victims were being treated right now, but when we got that update earlier this afternoon, there wasnt a whole lot to share and heres what hospital officials said during that first update early this afternoon. Received three patients from the east oakland School Shooting. Were asking everybody who has any concerns or questions to please not come congregate here at the hospital. Now you mentioned there being the potential possibility of victims being students now, we dont know that for sure. Were waiting to confirm that right now. We do know that the victims are adults and three of them are being treated here at hyla hostel. They are in Critical Condition. We dont know the extent of what their wounds are or what type of injuries they did suffer as results of that shooting, but we do know that they are being treated here and were waiting and update hopefully the next few minutes and once we get that update, we will provide that to you once it happens. So, but we did hear briefly from the Oakland Police Department Just a short time ago and heres what they had to say. Just want to give a quick update on the incident that occurred up here today. So a little bit after 12 45 officers responded to shots being fired or possible shots being fired in the area of 8200 fontaine street upon arrival our officers located six victims with a parent gunshot wounds. All those victims were transported to local hospitals where theyre conditions right now are currently unknown. We are asking all the public to please avoid the area as this is still an act of crime scene if anyone does have video or may have witnesses. Were please ask them to contact the Police Department for all the parents who are trying to pick up children. Were asking them to please meet their children at the church located at fountain in church. And thats all for now. Thats all for now, but more coming. Dan and kristen, good afternoon. Were told that three of the victims were brought to eat a Medical Center here in castro valley. I was told one was treated and may have been released. The other two are said to be instable condition now behind me you can see the Emergency Vehicle exit that we have seen Oakland Police cars come and go through here. The hospital is not allowing any media on the premises. We were at the hospital earlier, but then escorted off the premises by security. Were still awaiting an update from the hospital with what they have to say about the patients that are still here as we the r victims. Were taking to highland and oakland where theyre said to be in Critical Condition Oakland Police also saying the majority of these victims are adults. So again, were still awaiting an update from the hospital and we hope to have that soon. Were also hearing some of the first radio traffic from First Responders just after the shooting happened this from oakland fire and the chp listen to what was being said at the time. There are six shots outside an inside the school. The chancery two or three colors so kitty about it and all of the College Thing they heard the shot. And youre yelling in the background and crying inside of the school . We have eyes. I got another rp on the line. This thing is three victims one with heavy bleeding the other two are not serious bleeding. Here were taking them out to the front. Well thousands of people have fallen victim to gun violence whether you have lost a loved one or have been a victim of gun violence yourself. We have found ways to help visit abc 7 and right now were taking a live look from sky 7 over the scene at the sojourno truth independent study school, which is part of this king estate complex that has other schools as well dan. Yeah, it apparently has the Sojourner Truth independent. No students there. Its theyre working remotely Bay Tech Charter School Rudsdale Newcomer High School and red steel continuation high school. So its a complex of schools on this so called king estate campus on fontaine street in east oakland where this occurred. About three hours ago or so. Yeah employees are still on the scene keller avenue on ramp offramp still closed there off of 580 and students and for the most part been reunited with their families and have left the scene. We dont have details about the gunman how many whether any of them were actually shot themselves or theyve all gotten away or fled and we also dont have an idea as to the motivation as well one of the Council Members mentioned the word retaliation, but again, nothing from police about that and earlier a Police Lieutenant who had said possibly targeted is actually now saying maybe thats not the case. Its evolving very quickly obviously information changing quickly. So a lot of lack of clarity. Yeah a lot of lack of clarity, of course, you would expect that in a situation like this that happened so quickly and creates such frantic emotion. There are also reports out there that it was there some sort of altercation beforehand. So there are a lot of possible scenarios that would lead to some Something Like this, but the bottom line is someone or several people pulled guns started shooting.
