Glacier National Park in montana. Glacier become america 10th National Park in 1910 and borders the canadian provinces of British Columbia and alberta. The National Park covers some of the most pristine habitat found anywhere on earth. On average about two Million People per year visit glacier National Park, but only a small percentage leave their cars to explore their Emerald Green lakes, alpine hillsides, and see glaciers incredible wild life up close. Today were going to show you why this is so much more than a drie through park, by showing you some hikes that anyone could do even if you only have a little time and with a little extra effort you can see a side of this wilderness most pass right on by. The closest city and airport to glacier National Park is in kalispell montana. The Rocky Mountains that shape the park rise majestically just east of kalispell. After a short 30 minute drive we hit the gate to glacier National Park near lake mcdonald. This is the start to the famous going to the sun road that crosses through the park and make sible. Of. As the road climbs up impossible roads and cliff mountains the grandeur of glacier National Park began to unfold before us. Now popping out on the side of the road which they give you a lot of little turn outs, you can see that the little guard rails arent super substantial and you might want them to be because they kind of do that, and it seems to me like the perfect height wall to trip. Its a good tripping wall. Definitely watch the little ones and yourself at these pull outs. The sun road climbs to the roof of the Continental Divide and there are plenty of places for stupid things to happen if youre not using your noodle. After dropping down into the east side of the park along the shores of saint mary lake, we arrive at the Swift Current motor in. This part is a hub to some of the best backcountry hiking, lakes and wild life. Grizzly bear activity and a few recent attacks on hikers had people a little jumpy when we arrived and many trails were closed to keep the bears and pak visitors apart. As night fell excitement set in before a big day of exploring glacier National Parks back country. As money sun warmed the east slope of the Rocky Mountains we decided to walk out of our hotel rooms to take a trail right from the parking lot. The Swift Current trail is popular with day hikers and the main route to west side trails. Our plan was the 8 mile round trip hike to bullhead lake. Its an easy hike with mild elevation gain but huge payoff winding through some of the best landscapes glacier park has to offer. Finally were headed out on Swift Current pass trail right now. Several of the trails we were looking at are closed due to bear attacks. And you know that always makes it pretty exciting to go out on what would be otherwise a stroll in the park and now your life is in your hands. So thats exciting. A person was killed, another person was chewed on pretty badly and so they did close some of the trails. Right now the huckleberries are doing their things and bears love huckleberries and they grow right on the trail. So yes, you can see right here ive got my pepper spray, ready to go. That does prove to be pretty effective. Again 710 feet away effective. So you really hope not to ever use pepper spray because youd be seven to ten feet away from a bear, that sounds scary to me. Bear attacks on hikers are extremely rare in north america. But when two happen in a month and the National Media covers it, people get nervous. The fact is grizzlies like this are more interested in avoiding you than eating you. Most happen by solo hikers and when a mother is surprised by your presence. Both of which are easy circumstances to avoid. Hiking in small groups and making noise in small groups is best in bear country and to keep yourself safe. The park service does an excellent job of monitoring bear activity and will close down trails to keep people and bears safe. While having a healthy respect for bears is good, try not to let fear keep you from hiking in this amazing place. Glacier National Park is known for the best network of trails n the entire park system. So even though its heavily used National Park there are so many trails going to so many different locations and you can find you peace and quiet and a little bit of solitude. Access to off trail is here too so if you want to get above tree line and let you views open up you know be humble to your experience and surroundings, any time you think about going off trail. And you know youre dealing with snow in late season, some pretty steep loose terrain and wildlife so know what youre getting into before you get in too much. If taking a short hike away from the car isnt something you usually do a swift walk on this trail can show you how simple and fun day hiking can do. As we got further from the pass and trial head the number of people really thinned out. When this starts to happen be aware because fewer people means a greater chance youll run into wild life. We just ran into a couple hikers who saw a bear, it was a black bear on the trail eating some huckleberries. I think that bear skedaddled, again youre making noise and wanting to stay in a group and after a while not seeing a bear youre going to really want to see one. I think if you go through your entire glacier nation park experience and not see a bear you might be disappointed. I want to get a shot of one. Not too close. Not inspect its uvula or anything but just see one. About halfway through the hike we pass Red Rock Lake and the beautiful fallsll s that spill into its Crystal Clear waters. On a walk like this its always good to stop and take breaks. Not only will you feel better at the end of the day the whole point is to experience it not just look at it as you walk down the trail. After walking through the lush scenery on the trail we arrive at our destination for this hike. Bullhead lake. The shimmering waters sit below a 3000 foot wall and Swift Current above. These are the kinds of scenes you can only see getting out of the car and past parking lots and Visitor Centers. We saw families with small children and even seniors enjoying parts of this hike. Giving everyone a deeper appreciation for glacier National Park you can only get by trekking into places like this. Up next we find another short hike on the parks east side that was well worth the climb. Then we head back up to busy logan pass where some of the locals are extra friendly. Then we find solitude in picture perfect montana, when motion returns. I just served my motherinlaw your chicken noodle soup but she loved it so much. I told her it was homemade. Everyone tells a little white lie now and then. But now she wants my recipe [ clears his throat ] [ softly ] shes right behind me isnt she . [ male announcer ] progresso. You gotta taste this soup. [ male announcer ] you say tomato. Old el paso says diced tomato stand n stuff chicken tacos. You say whats for dinner . Old el paso says start somewhere fresh. Weve traveled to one of the most spectacular destinations in america. Glacier is known for big views, alpine lakes and some of the best mountain scenery youll find e on earth. Of the two Million People that visit most never leave the car and limit their experience to the drive of the going over the sun road. Even though this is one of the coolest drives weve ever taken you cant get close the glacier National Park unless you put some of this scenery under your feet. We got our first look by hiking the popular Swift Current pass trail. Glacier National Park is known for its amazing wildlife and grizzly bears get a lot of attention. If you play it safe, avoid hiking alone, make a little noise when on the trail and carry bear spray most of the time youll only see these animals from a distance. For our second day we decided to check out a trail off lake sherborn on applecurney falls. Day two in glacier National Park we have a beautiful blue bird day. Starting out a pretty easy hike. Try several shorter hikes today and try to spot wildlife. Today going to applekuney falls a mile up to a waterfall. It does have a 700 will elevation gain so that will put some blood in the legs. But try to spot shorter hikes instead of committing to one big hike for the day like yesterday if youre not planning a long multiday backpack trip in glacier National Park, its a place to get high quality day hikes from the car. After a gradual climb from the parking area the applecuney falls trail didnt waste time in that 700 foot elevation gain as we moved into the forest. After a good huff and puff on the trail i notice a place for a short place. Its a little windy up here. A couple little spur trails off the main. I always recommend taking them. Sometimes for a bathroom break but in this case, this. Popes out over the creek in these amazing glacier National Park scenes. Oh my gosh. This place is absolutely magical. Summer and fall are the best times to visit glacier National Park in montana. We were here in late august and enjoyed clear skies and day time temps in the 70s. The mosquitoes werent too bad and always come prepared in layers because whether can turn quick. As the trail moved out of the woods and onto the more exposed rocky slopes a little extra care was needed in navigating this part. There are a couple places you can view the falls from. You can see the ground is getting a little weak, find some rocks and well do it now. Not a big deal but yeah. Maybe dont do it with a camera in your hand, unless youre properly trained. Im into some lose sort of slatey kind of stuff, pretty slick. Wow. Very cool. The falls were like so many of the short hikes we do off the main road or highway. Largely overlooked but with tons of scenic payoff. Glacier National Park is big, just over a million acres, but most visitors only see it from paved highways and parking lots. By far the most heavily visited area in the park is the Visitor Center in logan pass, the high point of the road. In summer this lot is packed, by packed i mean tter chance of getting struck in the head by a lightening bold then you will finding a parking place here. One thing you will spot when you come here is wildlife. Logans pass is a great place to view sheep as well as bear and mountain goat. The most popular trail in glacier National Park leaves from the Visitor Center, the heavily used trail leaves from the foot path to hidden lake. We wanted to see as much of the park as we could so we braved the crowds and a little snow left on the trail to have a little look. Okay well right now im just above the logan pass parking lot. Logan pass is one of the busiest parking lots ive ever seen in my life, and you may be discouraged by that but dont be. Be patient, find a place to park and get out here and enjoy this beautiful setting. This is one of the most beautiful alpine places ive ever been and im not more than a 20 minute hike from the parking lot. The further you go the more the crowds will thin out obviously. You can see this is just a magical environment. The trail to hidden lake overlook is only a couple of miles and elevation gain isnt too bad. If there is still snow footing can be tricky so take your time as you climb near the Continental Divide. The sweeping alpine views of the trail will stop you in your tracks. Wide open stretches of grass and wild flowers are framed by majestic snow covered peaks. It just doesnt get any better than this. At the crest of the hike we spotted another one of glaciers familiar faces. The mountain goat. These curious residents are not afraid to come right up and say hi. Never the less they are wild animals and should we treated with respect. Even though it was crowded the views and access it gives you like this makes it a motion must do. On the way back to the car i spotted a family large snow field with a nice slope to it. E one of my favorite things to do when there is snow on the ground is called blisading. Blisading is another way to take a route by skiing down on patches of snow. In addition to shedding a lot of time off the trail its a fun way to play in one of the most gorgeous places ive ever seen. Up next we get on the water to float through more of montanas outdoors. Then its right in the middle of the action and a great place to stay in glacier National Parks remote beauty, when motion returns. Glacier National Park is a place that truly celebrates some of the best outdoor designations and landscapes in north america. Weve showed you how easy and good it is to get out of the car and deeper into glaciers back country beauty. Just outside the park near the town of bab montana we found a slow moving water looked perfect for a float and since i never leave home without my pack raft it was time to get on the water. So we had some great hikes today and we thought we would switch it up a little bit, so we actually left the park and found this great little piece of water right on the side of the road so i thought were going to break out one of the favorite pieces of great the pack raft. A two mile section and now im going to go float it. No floating down any stretch of river unfamiliar can be dangerous. We found a two mile section of the Swift Current river that a highway followed so we could scout it from the road before launching the raft. These alpaca rafts were built for water just like this, and a float through the wilds was a great way to end a full day of exploring glacier National Park. Woooo, yah. How was it . Oh my god. You guys got to go music delicious, but say i press a few out flat, add some beef, sloppy joe sauce and cheese, fold it all up and boom delicious unsloppy joes perfect for a school night. And glacier National Park is an example of how lucky we are to have places like this to experience. While glacier is easy accessible by driving over the going over the sun road its real beauty is in the trails and alpine lakes off the beaten path. These places are relatively easy and safe to explore, giving visitors a deeper connection to the magic found beneath these peaks. We stayed at the Swift Current motor in on the parks east side. This historic inn was a site of a camp ground of the railway in 1911 and became a starting point for people to explore the National Parks beauty. A coffee shop and general store make the swift motor inn a easy place to extend back country trips or short day hikes on one of the areas excellent trails. We had a great time exploring here in glacier National Park in montana. This is truly a hikers paradise and one of the most beautiful places in the world.
