KGO Good Morning America March 29, 2014

Morning menu and how mickey d. s is fighting back. Hey, good morning, everybody. Lots going on this morning including news in the hunt for flight 370. What the chinese say one of their planes spotted off the coast of australia overnight and the really surprising comments from a malaysian official seeming to offer fresh hope to the families of the passengers and also seeming to contradict some of their earlier statements. Oh, and you mention the families. What they have been going through the past 3 1 2 weeks is just harrowing. Also ahead on gma, youll be interested in this story, the red hot Political Drama house of cards in the middle of a reallife drama this morning with uncle sam. Why the show is threatening to leave maryland where it is filmed and how state lawmakers are firing back to try to make them stay. Yeah, theyre pulling a real Frank Underwood move in maryland this morning. Yes, they are. Well tell you about that coming up. But were going to start here with the breaking news out of california. The 5. 1 magnitude earthquake centered in northern Orange County with more than 20 aftershocks. It may have been relatively moderate, but this quake is of particular concern to seismologists, and abcs ryan owens is in brea, california, with more. Ryan, good morning to you. Reporter good morning to you, dan. Were about an hour east of los angeles, not far from the e epicenter of this quake. Im on a road that right now is closed. Take a look behind me and you can see why. There was a rock slide here. You see that car overturned. Just some of the damage here. The quake did more than rattle nerves. It sent bottles flying off store shelves, mirrors crashing to the ground. When i felt it, i felt like the world was going to end. Reporter it wasnt the big one, but it was big enough, magnitude, 5. 1. Its epicenter south of los angeles in Orange County, the oc near the city of la habra. The shaker wasnt Strong Enough to cause major structural damage or serious injuries, but it did trigger a small rock slide that overturned this car. The driver is okay. A few water main breaks were also blamed on the quake. The ground shook just after 9 00 friday night in the sixth inning of the dodgers game. We might be experimenting or experiment, i experience, i should say, an earthquake here. Everyone just sat still. Is it happening . Is that an earthquake . Reporter this came comes less than two weeks after news anchors ducked for cover during the socalled st. Patricks day shaker. Earthquake. Were having an earthquake. Reporter so no wonder Southern Californians are on edge. Still, this is l. A. So plenty of people tweeted about their earthquake experience, and, yes, some even took some notsosteady selfies as the ground was shaking. Seismologists arent quite sure yet but worry this is the real wakening of a fault line they havent heard from in decades. This may well be the same fault that caused the whittier quake back in the 1980s that killed eight people and caused more than 350 million in damages. One reason, bianna, they certainly dont want to reawaken that fault, it runs right through downtown los angeles. Yeah, the second largest city in the country. Ryan, our thanks to you. Well, were going to turn now to the latest on the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight. Chinese planes spotting three objects in the new search area overnight raising hopes that they could be from flight 370. Abcs david wright is in perth, australia, with the latest. Good morning, david. Reporter good morning, bianna. Thats the latest of several objects spotted in the past 24 hours, promising signs, but were still waiting for confirmation whether they are, indeed, debris from flight 370. Australian maritime authorities have had very little to say today, clearly not wanting to raise peoples hopes. Today a chinese search plane reported spotting three brightly colored objects. The colors, red, white and orange. Out on the open water, cautious optimism among the searchers because of objects like this one spotted by some of the planes. Very busy night. I would say the number of objects that we saw out there are certainly unusual. Reporter the spotters on board of the search planes have seen objects before but never have they managed to get clear pictures or have another plane find those same objects again. Finally, the details seem to be lining up. Ultimately we dont know if these are associated with the aircraft yet. We could be on to something here. Reporter in order to determine conclusively if any of this debris is from flight 370, a ship will have to retrieve it from the water. Chinas Largest Research vessel has been in the search area all day. Five more ships should be arriving on the scene about now. The first one to spot anything significant friday, this new zealand p3 orion. On friday, half the planes over the search grid spotted debris of some sort, the most promising day yet. Astonishingly, nearly three weeks after the crash, malaysian authorities said today they have not ruled out the possibility of finding survivors. No matter how remote, hope against hope that we will continue to find survivors. The search area now focused on a previously unsearched stretch of sea the size of virginia nearly 700 miles away from the location of those Satellite Photos they chased for most of the week. Is it out there . We may know soon, but getting it back wont be easy. Its in a very rough part of the ocean. The sea state will always be very rough. Reporter it would truly be a miracle if they found survivors here. Even once they confirm debris on the water may come from flight 370, theres still the job of finding the heavy wreckage lying on the ocean floor 12,000 feet down. It could be weeks or months before we retrieve those black boxes and finally get answers, dan. If ever. So much work left to be done. David wright, thank you. Lets bring in abc news aviation consultant colonel Steve Ganyard in washington. Steve, good morning. I just cant get over the comments from the malaysian Government Official overnight about how theyre continuing to search for survivors. He also said, miracles do happen. Is this a responsible message to be sending given that theyve already said that the plane is gone . Dan, i dont think it is. I think its an unfortunate comment. I think its somebody who is thinking with their heart and not with their head, and its just not fair to these families to continue to say that theres reason to hold out hope. We really know nothing more than we did in just days after the mishap. In essence, were at day one on this search, but this is where people their emotions get the better of them. Really the only thing they can do now is continue to search, put the emotions at bay and continue to use the scientific methods that they have and do their best to find something that will give us some answers about this mishap. Steve ganyard, we appreciate your analysis once again this morning and throughout this coverage. We do appreciate it. Thank you. We will continue to cover flight 370 on our website all day long on abcnews. Com. You can get the latest there any time. But there have been a lot of other stories developing overnight, and for that, as always, we turn to Ron Claiborne. Good morning, sir. Hi there, dan and bianna. Good morning, everyone. We begin with in des moines, iowa, where there was a massive overnight blaze that destroyed a centuryold iconic building. Huge flames ripped through the former yonkers building, which is currently undergoing a 36 million renovation. Part of the building collapsed, and smoke could be seen for miles. Nearly the entire force of the Des Moines Fire Department was called to battle this blaze. No one was injured in the fire. Investigators still trying to figure out the cause of that fire. And in washington state, searchers are still going through the massive debris from that horrific mudslide, but any hope of finding survivors is all but lost. The death toll is only expected to climb in coming days. As of now, the remains of 17 people have been identified. 90 others, though, are still missing. Officials say some of the victims may never be found. The hillside collapsed without warning exactly a week ago unleashing a wall of mud about 55 miles northeast of seattle. And russian president Vladimir Putin made a surprise phone call to president obama proposing Diplomatic Solutions to the crisis in ukraine. During a call late friday, both leaders agreed to have secretary of state john kerry and his russian counterpart meet and discuss proposals to defuse that situation. President obama urged putin to pull Russian Troops away from ukraines eastern border. Mr. Obama took the call from a hotel in riyadh, saudi arabia, after wrapping up dinner with the ailing King Abdullah where the two leaders discussed iran, syria and other security concerns. And take a look at this. Looks like the earth just opened up in downtown detroit on the west side of that city creating a giant sinkhole. Thats a pretty large sinkhole. A contractor was doing routine maintenance when he noticed some erosion, and thats when the road slowly started opening up. The sinkhole is 30 feet wide and 16 feet deep. Crews are checking for any possible gas leaks around that hole. And in brazil, some frightening moments as an Avianca Airlines passenger jet makes an Emergency Landing friday. None of the 49 passengers and crew members on board that flight, domestic flight were injured. Local Officials Say the front landing gear did not lower as the jet made the approach for landing at the airport in brazils capital. And finally, quite a rescue near tampa, florida. A bull, yes, that is a bull, that somehow got stuck in a pond, so a local deputy had to jump in the water and hold its head above the water while her partner kept a lookout for alligators. Local fire crews arrived. They placed a harness around the animal and pulled it out safely. Doesnt look too well there, but it was only exhaustion it was suffering and is expected to make a full recovery at the bull hospital near tampa. Oh, there is one . There is one. In florida . Theres everything in florida. Theres a hospital for everything in florida. Bull. Thanks, ron. Oh, when ron invents the news, nothing is better. Even better than real animals. He keeps us on our toes. Thanks, ron. Okay. Were going to turn now to new trouble for gm. Its adding nearly 1 million small cars to its ignition switch recall, which has been linked to at least a dozen deaths. And adding to the headache, the auto giant has suddenly stopped selling certain chevy cruze compact cars for no given reason at this point. Abcs Rebecca Jarvis has more on this developing story include ing why it took more than ten years to implement the recall. Reporter this morning General Motors expanding its ignition switch recall to an additional 971,000 cars from newer model years including 2008 to 2011 because the same faulty switches in older cars may have found their way into newer cars during repairs. Gm telling abc news there are no known deaths linked to this recall of newer vehicles, but theyre not taking chances. We have work to do to improve our process, and we are dedicated to doing that. Reporter the expanded recall coming just days after ceo mary barra, who took over at gm in january, issued this apology to customers pledging to conduct her own investigation into why gm took more than a decade to recall 1. 6 million cars linked to at least 12 deaths. And i can commit to you we will put all those processes and learnings in place to make sure this never happens again. Reporter separately, gm this morning also ordering its dealers to stop all sales of 2013 and 2014 chevy cruzes with 1. 4 turbo engines but declining to say why only telling abc news, its not an ignition issue. Now congress and the federal government has launched investigations into gms handling of the ignition recall and class action lawsuits are mounting. As gm faces claims it misled some grieving family members about the potentially deadly flaw. They only told us that they found nothing. Reporter even though they are routine, clearly this stopped sale of chevy cruzes comes at a bad time for General Motors, although some experts say its a sign gm has learned to deal with its problems faster. Dan, bianna. Its fair to say this new ceos honeymoon period is over with the company. Yes, absolutely. A tough one for gm and our thanks to Rebecca Jarvis this morning. Now though to life imitating art. Reallife politicians are playing hardball with the fictional politicians on the hit show house of cards. This all started when the producers threatened to stop filming there in maryland if they didnt get millions of dollars in tax breaks. Now theyre fighting back and one of our ace political reporters, abcs jeff zeleny, is on the story. Good morning. Reporter good morning, guys. It is actually hard to tell if life is imitating art or art is imitating life, but in this drama real politicians are using tactics ripped right from the shows headlines. There is but one rule, hunt or be hunted. Reporter threats. Am i really the sort of enemy you want to make . Reporter blackmail. Maybe there was foul play. Reporter and murder all playing out on the hit netflix show, house of cards. But now another plot is unfolding. The show looks Like Washington but its actually filmed in neighboring maryland. To attract house of cards, the state handed out 26 million in tax breaks for the first two seasons. A trial is a lot like real estate. Its all about location, location, location. Reporter but now the show says it wants even more and is holding up production of season three. We just gave them a great gift. Reporter now house of cards is getting a dose of political reality. Show executives threatening to pull out telling governor Martin Omalley we will have to break down our stage, sets and offices and set up in another state. Maryland lawmakers are doing what Kevin Spaceys character Frank Underwood might do, playing hardball. Certainly the idea of being threatened by Frank Underwood seemed to prompt seemed to us to invite a Frank Underwoodstyle response. I may have pushed him too far, which is worrisome. Friends make the worst enemies. Reporter they passed an amendment threatening to seize Certain Property of certain Film Production entities if they leave the state. In other words, if house of cards wants to leave maryland, the state wants to make it hurt. There are two kinds of pain, the sort of pain that makes you strong or useless pain. Reporter politicians are on the edge of their seats. Come on in. Reporter and all those addicted house of cards fans wondering whether it will delay next season. Now, a fight over tax breaks might not make the cut in the real show, but the question to all followers of house of cards including president obama who says its his favorite, will season three be in jeopardy . Thats the real question. Which side is going to blink first . Do we know . Is this going to be a significant delay . Spoiler alert, i cant tell you, but hollywood sources say they believe it will be filmed regardless of where it is, and it will look Like Washington. All right. Good press for the show either way. Indeed. Thank you, jeff. Appreciate it. Thank you, jeff. Well, tonights the night when the philadelphia 76ers can make dubious history. Another loss for the team will give them the longest losing streak in the nba ever, but its got some people wondering whether theres a method to their madness. Could it all be part of a clever strategy . Abcs Ron Claiborne is here to explain. Not quite sure if im going to buy this but ill listen. Bianna, that is what a lot of people are wondering trying to make sense of the sixers now epic losing streak. Could the woebegotten sixers win in the long run by continuing to lose . And the sixers reporter the spotlight is on the philadelphia 76ers for all the wrong reasons. Carterwilliams missing the three. Pau missing the dunk and and now missing the bunny. Reporter the sixers now tied with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the most consecutive losses in one season losing 26 games in a row. Since they last claimed a win, the Seattle Seahawks took the super bowl, derek jeter announced his retirement, even the Winter Olympics have come and gone. On average theyve lost by more than 17 points a game, one of the worst losing margins in nba history. If thats not bad enough, their shoes literally blow up on their feet. What happened there . He lost his sneaker. Reporter their disappointing run so amazing, even sparking conspiracy theories. Theres no question that the 76ers are losing on purpose. They cant even deny that. Reporter the players and coaches say, not true. You know, were itching to have that feeling of, you know, being a winner. We fight every night, and were going to continue to do that. Reporter there is a potential silver lining. The nba team in last place gets a better shot at the first draft pick. Weve been very transparent from day one that were trying to grow something and rebuild something. It may be small followup to the sixers, but even if they lose every game left this season, they wont come close to the worst season record of all time. Their 15 wins are still better than the three that hold the record for fewest wins in one season, which is 8 and then they have a long way to go before they match caltech whose Basketball Team lost 228 games in a row. Whoa by the way, 5 to you for using the term woebegotten. Ah, yes. You caught that one. Right. Four syllables. Thats like three more than i usually see. Incredible video of the shoe. Yeah, it was. Part of their misfortune. Cant even keep their shoes on. Yes. Thanks, ron. We have an extreme
