You see the waters, so choppy. The keel of the ship is sticking up out of the water right now. Its so hard to go through this rescue operation. And the families are waiting in anguish today. Huddled under blankets. Looking for any sign that rescuers have found the 287 people still missing. And the ships captain, he in the gray hoody. You see him there. Hes saying hes really sorry and deeply ashamed. He was one of the first to escape. Were learning an Evacuation Order was not giving until 30 minutes after the ship started sinking. And according to one report, only 1 of 46 life boats was deployed. Abcs gloria riviera, has the latest. Reporter good morning, robin. We are getting troubling details, the coast guard telling us the ferrys captain was one of the first to escape abandoning ship just 32 minutes after the distress call. Hes now under investigation as a criminal. This morning, a chilling look inside the doomed ships hull. The girl says, the water is rising. Do you see us . And on the deck, as passengers fought to survive, some using the listing vessels balance con nice like lad ders. Others, frantic, as helicopters moved in, fighting a ticking clock. The announcement told us we should stay still. But the ship was already sinking. Reporter and this morning, a disturbing claim from survivors. They say the 475 passengers on board, mostly High School Students, were told to stay put by the ships crew, rather than to evacuate on to life boats. This morning we learned, only 1 of 46 lifeboats were deployed. Translator i screamed for 30 to 40 minutes in the ferry. Things were falling. And people were sliding down the ship. Reporter some passengers, seen here left waiting. Some sending texts to loved ones, not knowing if they would ever see them again. Mom, i might not be able to tell you in person, i love you. And from a daughter, dad, i cant walk out. The corridor is full of kids. And its too tilted. Soon, the ships electronic doors and gates would stop working. With nearly 300 passengers still missing this morning, many of them are believed to be trapped inside. Overnight, as the ferrys captain surfaced in shame, saying, i dont know what to say. Officials pumped oxygen into the ship to give possible survivors a lifeline. Then, the search and rescue effort, suddenly postponed due to weather. Another Devastating Development for families. But amidst the grief, stories of heroism and hope emerging, too. A 58yearold man pulling nearly two dozen students to safety by and this, the rescue of a brave 6yearold girl, capturing the heart of a grieving nation. That little girl giving so much hope to many who need it so desperately. The weather here, overnight. Hoping the cranes could lift the vessel but that could take up to two months. After clashes between the government and prorussian militants. Secretary of state kerry is in highstakes talks with his russian counterpart this morning, the latest attempt to walk back from war. And abcs chief Global Affairs correspondent, martha raddatz, is tracking all of the latest developments. Good morning, martha. Reporter good morning, george. Just a short time ago in geneva, secretary kerry wrapped up a meeting with his russian counterpart. They did shake hands this morning. But it does not appear that russia has agreed to call off its supporters or units in ukraine. But frightening and escalating tensions in ukraine itself this morning. Three prorussian militants killed by ukrainian troops. The first death as ukraine tries to take control. The russian militants were part of a group of 300 men, armed with stun grenades, bats and molotov cocktails, trying to seize a Ukrainian Military base, george. Vladimir putin speaking out, this morning as well, defiant as ever. Reporter yes. An annual tradition. A marathon callin session on russian tv. But it was more of a cheering session when putin told the audience that it was nonsense that Russian Forces are in ukraine right now, although he did confirm that the socalled little green men in crimea were russians. Those were those wellarmed troops with no insignia, saying they are helping to protect ethnic russians there, george. And so many troops on the border, as well. Now, to the man accused of that bomb scare on the Boston Marathons finish line. This morning were learning more about the suspect who is in custody. Abcs ryan smith is live in boston and has all of the details for us. Good morning, ryan. Reporter good morning, robin. Kevin edson was seen walking in the area you see behind me. Just feet away from the finish line, where tens of thousands will cross on the Boston Marathon on monday. While he sits facing multiple charges, his mom, claiming he had Mental Illness and speaking out on his behalf. Facing a judge wednesday morning, 25yearold kevin ed e d edison, stood silently, a far cry from the scene he made the night before. Edson, seen here wearing all black, and a veil, following a ceremony at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Police say he told them he had a rice cooker in his backpack. As a precaution, the bag was blown up. On the oneyear anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing. Reporter edson, covered in paint in his mug shot, is now facing six separate charges, including threatening battery, and possession of a hoax explosive device. He has pleaded not guilty. The judge setting eddsons bail at 100,000 and ordering him under undergo. A psychiatric evaluation. Prosecutors say he told police, the whole thing was performance art. Allegedly saying, quote, i knew what i was doing, the performance got the best of me. His defense, arguing he had a history of psychiatric disorders and was off his medication. He does need some assistance to stabilize himself mentally. Reporter edsons mother telling abc news, her son, quote, has been battling mental issues for several years. And, quote, to have this happen on the oneyear anniversary of such a horrific crime, is unfathomable. Edsons brother also telling us, quote, my brother is a different kind of sick. What he did at the finish line is absurd and shameful. She went on to say, quote, i have two sons who struggle with Mental Illness. And ive had to constantly fight for 12 years to get them the help they need. She said she has run the marathon herself, six times. And had this message for those running next week. Quote, run strong and enjoy the wonderful feeling as you cross that finish line. Meanwhile, marathon organizers say they are stepping up security for mondays event. Police will number in the thousands. And speaking of tighter security. You know those socalled bandit runners that typically run in racers like the Boston Marathon . Theyre people that run without numbers. Well those people will not be allowed to run in the Boston Marathon. And if they do they may be removed from the course. Good morning, robin. We begin with a horrifying scene near los angeles. Two fire trucks racing to a burning house. Each with their sirens blaring, crashed into one another. The impact sending one of the rigs plowing into a restaurant. Abcs nick watt is there. Reporter terror and panic in an l. A. Afternoon, captured on a cell phone camera, screams fill the air. A man is trapped by a fire truck that smashed into a popular dumpling house in suburban los angeles. Customers and employees trying desperately to free him. All of the employees in the back, it feel like earthquake. Reporter two fire trucks both responding to a nearby fire, collided at an intersection, sending one careening into the corner restaurant. 15 people were hospitalized, including customers, passersby and firefighters. One person is said to be in critical condition. But remarkably, there are no fatalities. Almost nothing is left of lus dumpling house but rubble. The only stroke of luck, this happened at midafternoon when there were only a handful of customers in the restaurant. Late last night, the fire truck was pulled from the wreckage. Police in kansas city are investigating yet another possible highway shooting. This time, a vans window was blown out. Theyve connected at least 12 other shootings in the area in recent weeks, keeping drivers there on edge, and police on alert. A 10,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to an arrest. A massive explosion blew a hole through this ammunition plant in tennessee, killing one man and injuring three others. The blast knocked down two walls and ignited a fire that spread to nearby brush. No word on the cause. Encouraging news in the battle against diabetes. Doctors are reporting huge progress in fighting complications from that disease. A new study finds heart attacks and deaths from high Blood Pressure have dropped 60 in just the past 20 years. Experts call that figure impressive and much credit goes to better educated patients taking better care of themselves. Authorities in oregon are draining that reservoir used for drinking water. All because surveillance cameras caught a man, using the reservoir as a urinal. 38 million gallons of water for that city of portland, are going to waste. The Public Health risk is minimal. But the officials say, and i agree with this, perception is everything. And they got plenty of backup water. So, they can afford to do this. Shame on that guy. Finally, you can be sure one cat in florida no longer has all of its nine lives. A fire broke out in an Apartment Building near orlando. But watch the third floor. A cat leaps, you see that, off the window sill, and it survived the jump. Running away across the parking lot, unharmed. This is my favorite part. Firefighters found the cat nearby purring. No one was injured in the fire. And the cat and its owner has since been reunited. Wow. Thats a brave cat. And a happy cat. No grumpy cat there. Strong, too. Now, to the latest on the hunt for flight 370. And news that the oil slick found near the search area is not from an airplane. The submersible about to be sent down deeper. In the same area searchers have locked in on. Abcs david kerley is live in washington, has the latest for us. Good morning, david. Reporter good morning. News this morning, i learned that searchers saw something in yesterdays dive. Theyre going back to that area right now with the bluefin21. Were taking you down to the bottom of the ocean where they are looking with that submersible. Mapping the ocean floor. Its deep. 15,000 feet. And theyve now adjusted the bluefin so it can go deeper than its maximum, which is 15,000 feet. As you can see, this drops off and some of the areas are much deeper. They have this area of interest now. And they think it will be safe to send the bluefin back there and take a look, robin. A full 16hour day. How much of the area, the bottom, has it been able to map . A lot, actually. They were going to concentrate on a 15squaremile area. But already, the bluefin has mapped 35 square miles. It goes back and forth, sort of like a lawn mower. It was on one of the runs yesterday, that something of interest was seen. Thats the concentration for today. The bluefin down there as we speak. Hopefully well learn something new. All right, david. Thank you. Could be big news. Were going to turn to a kidnapping hoax, sparking outrage in washington state. Cousins staged a fake abduction in a local play ground. It was all caught on camera as bye standers looked on in horror. Abcs Neal Karlinsky has more on this stunt gone wrong. Reporter watch closely. This man is about to snatch a little boy from a park in broad daylight. He gets him into the van, and they quickly drive off. Its over in just seconds. But what panicked moms and kids back at the park didnt realize, it was all staged. Part of a hoax. The fake kidnappers came back, revealing that the little boy is a relative. They should have not gave you permission to do that. My daughters still terrified. Shell tell you right now. Shes like, what if they take me. Reporter now, police are investigating whether cousins jason and jesse holden should be charged with a crime. This morning, in a gma exclusive, the two hoaxsters admit, they made a huge mistake. We just want to start by making an apology to everybody that was there, especially everyone with their kids there and everything. We really didnt we didnt picture it having that kind of an impact. Well take it. Now, to some happy news. Relief, joy and elation. Thats what a dallas mother says she is feeling today, thanks to her conjoined twins separated. And now, well enough to leave the hospital for the first time. Abcs ryan owens has the story of these precious overcomers. Reporter its the moment doctors said might never happen. To be there for the first time in fresh air, ever. In nine months. Reporter the moment these two baby boys see sunlight for the first time. They couldnt open their little eyes because the sun was so bright. Reporter the once conjoined twins, owen and emmitt, left a dallas hospital wednesday, and this morning, are at a rehabilitation center, well on the road to recovery. I dont see all of the tubes and the traches or the machines. Theyre my babies. And theyre beautiful. Reporter the boys, now 9 months told, were born joined from the bottom of their breastbone to the hipbone. The little guys shared a liver and intestines. Medical experts didnt think they would make it. But in august, when they were just 6 weeks old, doctors at dallas medical city Childrens Hospital were able to separate them in a marathon ninehour surgery. These days, its easy to tell them apart. Take it from dad. Emmet is really easygoing. Laid back. Owen, a little more irritable. A little agitated at times. Reporter owen and emmet could go home in a matter of weeks. Certainly in time for their first birthday. The doctors are cautious. Theyre not going to come out and say these two boys are perfectly normal little boys, healthy little boys. Well say it for them. The selfie craze has hit the white house again. We remember big papi snapping that photo with the president. This time, its official. Vice President Joe Biden set up an Instagram Account overnight. Sending out his first picture. It went viral immediately. Gio is in social square with the latest. Hey, george, robin. That power selfie is the first photo biden posted of himself on his new Instagram Account saying, he found a first selfie. And he signs his pictures with v. P. And biden is already burning up instagram. The picture has more than 23,000 likes. The white house tweeting out that selfie of the, quote, pals, as well. But, obama and biden arent the only one getting in on the craze. Take a look at this. Prince william and kate stopping to snap some selfies with a number of lucky wellwishers while they were on their royal tour there in australia. And kate wasnt always so ready for that selfie. We can understand that, right . This has to be a sure sign, ill go out on a limb, and the selfie craze has jumped the shark. Thats true. Now, the kids are like we dont want to do it anymore.
