Ok Why would Jodi says I remember I'm young enough to have had him in color and his jeans were indeed green. Yeah me too I remember the green but I love I went and looked it up let me tell you it quickly Nate McMillan's our producer Ryan McConaughey is doing all things technical is Gabby with us today it's the right Ok Tricia McMillan is her consulting producer. Our friend Mr Green Jeans was born in 1900 Sandwich Illinois to a Methodist minister it says he attended Maine Township High School in suburban Chicago or where he played the sousaphone in the school's marching black band went to the University of Redlands became interested in jazz and after graduating in 1901 he played bass in various bands Now here's the interesting thing he enlisted in the Marine Corps Mr Green Jeans was in the Marine Corps and joined a Marine Band and then after that went to with Fred Waring in the Pennsylvania ends and he had a regular radio show where Mr Green Jeans Hugh Branom met Bob Keeshan who was also a Marine. And it was that the of the news conversation that they had there of where Bob was an employee of the t.v. Station it was that meeting that got him hired to become Mr Green Jeans and kangaroo before you did know this but before he was Mr Green Jeans Hugh hosted a t.v. Show on w. A.b.c. T.v. In New York in 1951 he was the host of Uncle lumpiness cabin. At Sochi I guess soon he was Uncle lumpy so he became a local m.p. And then Mr Green Jeans and the rest is history that means France has time for a farmer Friday broadcast. And. More rights to siphon off work since November with a broken ankle I hadn't realized how much I missed your radio show I'm a rural mail carrier I listen the radio all day I always enjoyed catching your show especially on Fridays I need that side and your farmer Fridays always made me smile I wonder what I've missed these last few months how is Andrea how are the children and are the chickens still there I'm so ready to get back to work if only to catch up on my favorite radio shows Olara Thank you I hope your ankles feel better by the way and sorry to hear of the mishap and I don't know how it happened but I hope everything has gone Ok for you now Andrea is doing well thank you the children well it take too long to give a report on each of them individually but I I think you'd be proud of them lar as much as as much as I am if you knew them the chickens now that's another story we love those circles we love them but the coyotes seem to love them more than we did and so when we were. When we were down to our last with Merrill was her name we decided to forgo chicken farming until we could take offense building class at the community college. Either that or become members of the n.r.a. Again. It was either the fence or. A shotgun but tell you what Laura Andrea decided to go out of the chicken business into the wild bird feeding business and while we don't get eggs for our trouble we do have a lot a lot of fun watching them and we haven't lost any quail or dove or cardinals to the coyote's So that's the update for Laura that's my special answer to Laura who wrote us on Facebook on Tuesday of this week on our Toxic Talk Tuesday segment we featured an organic farmer from Oregon who farms a couple 1000 acres and the reason we had the farm Ron was because of an interesting development with the weed board which I didn't even know existed anywhere let alone in Oregon and I think of Oregon I don't 1st think Well the there's a state that's hostile to organic farmers I think of Oregon as an area of the country where the authorities in general population would be cut kind to the people who say oh you know like organic non g.m.o. Blah blah blah but we found out that the Wheat Board had received a complaint and that there were noxious weeds moving from the organic farmers field onto adjacent property and the upshot was if if you don't spray it we will and you'll pay for so that caused a number of people to be over at the farm and then others who of buy products from them around the country to be a little upset and we featured the farmer on Tuesday and we got on Wednesday we got this update tonight we had a very productive meeting with the county commission and we'd board officials in Morrow Sherman County Oregon. 1st we would like to thank our low loyal supporters for helping spread the word and for voicing your concern about the threat we faced Sherman County reportedly received more than $40000.00 e-mails about the matter now that we didn't ask you to e-mail we were just telling you about it I think this came from there you know the e-mails as they say there are the updates that they sent out on their on their website you helped to open up a whole new level of debate about organic farming and about the benefits of clean healthy food thank you the county commission has now agreed to work with us on a proper weed plan protocol that does not include the use of toxic chemicals and we would like to thank them for their level headed approach to working together with the farm there's still a couple of meetings we have to have to go to in the officials but we're optimistic so the the basically news from the farm in Oregon is cooler heads prevailed they're working together and they're going to settle this without a whole lot of conflagration it sounds like so that's the update from Oregon Now full disclosure that conversation did not go exactly as I thought it would in fact I got a few e-mails from farmers who heard it and who were disappointed and I hate to disappoint people and most of the farmers who reached out said I was really interested in the topic because I don't want authorities dictating to me and my farm or any other farm any more than the you know the government has to but some of the things that the organic farmers said my traditional farming friends had sounded not. Sounded more like kind of an attack and as I processed that I saw their point. And my hope on Tuesday was that we could present this full orbed situation in Oregon Here's some of the back story of why do you you know it's harder to Farm Organic than it is the traditional why why why do you go to all this trouble what's behind that wanted to hear his heart and then we'll hear about the weed board and I thought it would bring us all together and the nap and his I went back and forth with my Farber friends on email I realized a good analogy and I'll I'll give you that analogy when we come back and then I want to take your calls traditional organic somewhere in between full time part not part time backyard it's a farmer Friday I want to hear about your experience it one of my favorite questions is to ask what he had grown What are you grown What do you do and how you get your hands dirty on the farm today and if you're just a backyard farmer that's Ok I'd love to hear from you today you can hear the phone number right here this is Chris they re live on Moody radio called Chris may be live now at 877 live 675 that's 877548 precinct 70. We are bringing farmers together one field at a time at the radio barbed wire fence today this is Chris baby live on Moody radio 877-548-3675 let's talk about the joys and the hardships of farming Let's talk about what you're planting down or maybe there's somebody harvesting something already no different parts of the country you harvest all year long Let's talk about life experiences let's talk about you holding that freshly grown tomatoes up and cutting it and smelling the wonders of that tomato or that cucumber there is nothing there is nothing like the smell of a freshly sliced cucumber is there or a musk melon 187-754-8367 extension 5 if you know what a barrow or a guilt is then give me a call and tell and explain what a barrow or or a guild is before I give the analogy we're going to Central Florida to talk with Jason hey Jason how are you. Chris area bill while you're on the farm today what's going on oh yeah you know when you're when you're out for a day for operation on her in Florida paying or not I did it's funny you mention that about my guitars I spent 10 years on a spider for. I don't even know how tonight or tomorrow is any more my hammer I did not that's an interesting you know if people who live near the water is like I don't go to the beach anymore so you lived for 10 years with tomatoes and you kid do you even eat catch a penny more. I don't I'm not sure the old loves it he needs it on everything so that's how enticing the eat stuff as we put ketchup. Even the breakfast cereal so you heard me talk about the weeds did you hear a story about the weeds the other day yeah I did in you know it's funny because my wife's family never ask and they have a problem with must this allowed Larry and I don't know anything about it I just know it's pretty bad but down here in Florida you know we we have a lot of acreage of this citrus and a lot of people may be under aware that we're under attack with a bacterial disease called greening image for a little bug called a so it's no bigger than I really and he's really just a flying have hypodermic needle So if you're not taking care of your growth it's just a quarter mile down the road right at your breeding facility and they are flying over to my grove with the wind and they're spread the disease in my grove now and it's an expensive battle to fight this situation we're seeing that play out here in Florida where people are getting upset with their neighbors for not tending to their growth so maybe you know they they decide to get out of it and they leave the land has ias for development Well you need to clean that up because you're doing your prison disease non or stand there point it's very expensive to clean that up and they probably just went bust and don't have the money they claim about but it doesn't make it any better for me but I also don't want to see the state come in and start telling them what you must do on your own land either yes so I think we've we've all just got to have a level headed approach and realize some of us are still on a stick with it and maybe the state can step in and then provide some kind of assistance you know. To helping these people clean up line I happen now there you're talking about they they finally backed off and said hey will help you. Clean up this mess. Yeah we'll work with you on her do it by work together there's there's got to be some common ground we're all in saying and history we just forget for sure it's exactly and you know and you know the thing that the underlying for our program you know people could say so what are you talking about of weeds on our Christian program well the real the underlying question is how do I love my neighbor how do I love my let's say you've got a your backyard and I don't want to put anything on there I got kids run around and I don't know what's in the you know whatever it is that they're spraying on the thing I want to keep that natural Ok fine go ahead mode and you know as long as you're mowed it's fine right well wait a minute what if you Sargon dandelions in there and them dandelions grow up well that you have Dan lines on your yard is fine you keep them right there right. With dandelions don't stay where they are they blow everywhere and they get on other people's yards so how do I love my neighbor as a farmer who was committed to doing it this way and yet I know and flip it around that say you're a traditional farmer and you use whatever the spray is or you use that for what happens with the runoff from your property to their property and how are you going of how you can love them well knowing that they're committed to doing things this way or the wind as Jason just talked about it's it's not an easy question but I think it's a really good question because it's not just about farming it's about life it's about being a neighbor right adjacent great start to our program thanks for calling this going to Wisconsin Preston is on the line hey Preston How are you and Greg Chris are you doing now I got an e-mail from you I know I recognize your name didn't didn't you e-mail me earlier yes I did one thank you finding in taking my call you made it all right now you have how many cows on that dairy farm we mouth about 40 k. . I was and we like to say that we have the happiest cows in the county. With our 40 cows. On waterbeds and they have access to pass your all throughout the summer they have a climate control cooling system and they give about 10 gallons per day each so really we really pamper our cows and then decide that we name them all they all each have their own names and we like to do calves have the same starting letter as their mother so like we have an account name and a cap name Ashley and another cat named Alberta we just have a lot of fun with it and we like I was going to bring value got to you don't tell me my sil was your favorite cow of all time. All time Ok well I got to say here in southwestern Wisconsin where big Chicago Cubs fans and last summer not last former but a few summers ago we had a captain we named or that's their fall or after the Chicago Cubs center failed or . We've got a crowd named Dexter Fowler That's mostly in Iran with our very fine so I think probably 'd my favorite is that is good that you know we do and we've done programs like this about what you've named your pets what you've named your animals I've never heard of a cow named Dexter found was Ok you're going to say something else go ahead. Why is this going to say we're conventional Just by choice and you know we we just feel that with extra tools that we've been given by going conventional instead of organic that that God has given us an opportunity to better treat our animals and that's not to say anything you know against organic farming or anything like that but that's just that's just our conviction and I like what you said about the last the last caller about how do you how do you deal with the different types of farming and I think it just comes down to respect you know whether you're conventional organic just respect in your neighbor and and just there are different viewpoints on things yes now use totally agree and you. You mentioned a waterbed when you 1st called in and I want to know are you are you kidding me or is are you really serious that they sleep on a waterbed I'm 100 percent serious that we have freestyle bar and that has $42.00 waterbed stalls and they're divided into sections so that when the cow steps on it she gets firm footing so she's confident to stand up but then when she lays her whole body on it she just kind of floats there and. Actually really really neat and I got to say when we were told the bottom the guy that was what our barn did you go up water bed more like water what they make both for cows and a lot of fun. Yeah I wonder what Dexter Fowler sleep number is. Good question. Preston I love what you're saying here and when Preston Road earlier is like a read is so well laid out is it lives like he's a lawyer he laid out his you know what this is what I heard and here's what I say it's like I don't agree with everything you're saying here suppressed and thanks for being on today. Is in Holmes County Ohio high Duane How are you high current student very
