And enjoy the big game. paul joncich Jeremy Aguero from applied analysis joins us to explain what this weekend means to local sportsbooks and the state of nevada. Jeremy Aguero the super bowl is the single biggest day for Sports Betting sportsbooks will be jam packed with bettors who will wager on almost everything imaginable in sundays matchup between Denver Broncos and carolina panthers. Last year, nearly 116 million was bet on the super bowl in nevada, which is still the only state in america with legalized Sports Betting. That was the secondbest super bowl ever, just behind the 119 million bet the year before. While we expect a new record to be set this weekend, the more than 120 million that will be wagered legally in nevada is a drop in the bucket compared to the 4. 1 billion that the American Gaming Association estimates will be wagered illegally on the super bowl this year. As impressive as those numbers are, the super bowl is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Sports Betting in nevada. Last year, a record 4. 5 billion was wagered at race and sportsbooks, with the nfl and College Football accounting for basketball, which has gained ground in recent years thanks to the popularity of march madness, finished the year second with 1. 3 billion in reported wagers. Sports betting grows more popular every year, and that means rising gaming revenue for sportsbooks. Since 2011, sportsbook revenue has grown by 41 percent. That is 10 times the growth rate reported for overall gaming revenue, which continues to struggle to recover from losses during the great recession. But before you get too excited, Sports Betting generates only about 3 percent of total gaming revenue, so it wont make or break a casinos bottom line. That is probably a good thing since a last minute touchdown or fluke fumble can trigger a multimillion dollar swing for sportsbooks. With millions of dollars on the line this weekend, im betting there will be an equal number of cheers and groans filling sportbooks in every corner of the state.
