It happened at the campus near buffalo and Summerlin Parkway where some parents have since reunited with their children and thats where we find 8 news now reporter karen castro. Karen . karen castro its been a long afternoon students have been allowed to go home for the day, but the school was on lockdown for most of the afternoon. First responders were called out to the Johnson Middle School at around 1130 this morning for reports of a Hazardous Substance on campus. Las vegas fire and rescue received reports that a student brought what they describe as a small amount of mercury to school. We students who were at the gym have been exposed but no one had to be taken to the hospital. There were concerns of the mercury possibly spreading through out the campus. In fact, the Environmental Protection agency found the substance in the principals shoes. The epa is doing a sweep of the school and checking out all students. Meanwhile, parents anxiously when it happened so you dont know if theyve been exposed. I mean, theyre not telling us anything. Karen Castro Las Vegas fire and school outside the campus. But many of them were frustrated because the school was not allowing them to take their kids home. Johnson middle school was on a softlockdown until the end of the school day. Parents were notified through a mass voicemail sent by the Clark County School district. The parents of the students who were exposed to the mercury were called directly. karen castro again, at least five students here at Johnson Middle School were exposed to mercury earlier today but no one was injured. open as usual tomorrow. Brittany edney joins us live with more from North Las Vegas police department. What led up to the escape. Christianne Klein hendersons apparentmurder suicide has been identified. Coroners have identified the man as michael yonke. Police say on monday, yonke shot his wife before turning the gun on himself in anthem. Officers say the woman was in the process of moving out and returned to pick up some of her occurred. The couple had a 9 year old daughter. And the woman had a 14 year old daughter from a previous relationship. The girls were not at home at the time of the shooting and are now being cared for by relatives. paul about 20 people were forced out of their apartments by a fire last night. It happened near las vegas boulevard south and west serene at the paradise spa apartments. When firefighters showed up. Smoke was pouring out of several apartments. The red cross is helping those affected. Catching fire. This is the fourth one there in the last four years. They also dealt with an hoa treasurer who was convicted of embezzling millions of dollars from the hoa. Christianne Klein jury selection has started for the bundy brothers in Portland Oregon today. Bunkerville ranchers ammon and ryan bundy face several charges for the standoff at a wildlife refuge near burns oregon earlier this year. Five others involved in the standoff also go on trial today. Jury selection is expected to last through friday with opening Opening Statements for tuesday. The brothers are the sons of cliven bundy. The problem happened back on august 8th and affected the computers needed to book passengers and fly the jets. The airline eventually canceled about onethousand flights that day. And grounded an additional onethousand flights over the following two days. Delta also agreed to give affected customers refunds and vouchers for future travel. paul joncich American Airlines is the second us airline to launch commercial flights to cuba. Its ft departed from Miami International airport today. The flight kicked off the Airlines First two of six destinations to the island. American will offer flights to five different cities in cuba all starting at varying dates this month. And later this year. The airline will offer service to havana. The government says wait times at security lanes are averaging 15 minutes or less. Its mostly smooth sailing at airport checkpoints these days. A far cry from what was happening just a few months ago. As you can see the airport was packed. In may it looked like it was going to be a long summer. People were waiting in line for hours at some of the nations busiest airports, causing thousands to miss their flights. The tsa blamed an increase in Airline Travel and a shortage of security officers. The skies are not friendly anym. By hiring 13 hundred new officers and converting another 18hundred part time workers to full time.
