Projects Hillary Clinton scores what again will be a significant victory in florida. In North Carolina, nbc news projects Hillary Clinton is the winner there. Still no calls yet on the gop side in North Carolina, and no calls yet on either side in ohio, illinois, or missouri. Let us begin with that breaking news from miami. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez is with the rubio campaign. I imagine its a very tough scene there tonight, gabe. Reporter lester, good evening. A very disappointing scene here in miami. Marco rubio calling it an american political tsunami and saying that he was disappointed that his campaign couldnt make it through, but he announced that he was suspending his Campaign Just moments ago. Take a listen. While it is not gods plan that i be president in 2016 or maybe ever, and while today my campaign is suspended no the fact that ive even come this far is evidence of how special america truly is. And all the reason more why we must do all we can to ensure that this nation remains a special place. Reporter rubio got into this race 11 months ago with very high hopes. A sitting senator from florida coming home this week with a lot hanging over his head. He was losing momentum in the last couple of contests. In the end, he could not win many states. Just a win in minnesota, puerto rico, and d. C. In the end here in florida, jeb bush could not pull out a victory, and neither could marco rubio. His campaign has said that it was moving on towards utah, and was to campaign in all 50 states. But in the end, could not pull it out. His campaign attributing this loss to the rise of donald trump and the anger in the american political system. The crowd in miami is dispersing. Obviously a very crushing defeat for the florida sitting senator. Those are always uncomfortable scenes to witness. Gabe gutierrez, thank you. Katy tur is in palm beach. She is with the Trump Campaign. Obviously this key to what they hope will be a number of wins tonight to put them on a path for a quick nomination. Katy. Reporter thats right, lester. A big win but not an unexpected win. Donald trump has said he wants a twoman race with ted cruz, and hes one step closer to getting that tonight. I just spoke with the Trump Campaign a few minutes ago. They said they are feeling good. They were obviously confident about florida and correctly confident about florida. So confident that donald trump in fact spent the day on the golf course today. He is coming away from this state with all of its 99 delegates. Now, hes been relentless in his attacks against marco rubio, calling him sweaty, calling him little marco, saying he couldnt win a contest for dog catcher if he tried in his state. Also going after his record, saying his Senate Voting record wasnt good, that he supported immigration. Also that he was not good with his finances. 10 million was spent by the socalled establishment in this state to try and stop trump. That obviously did not work. The question now, whats going to happen in ohio . John kasich is putting up a fight in that state. He is a popular governor. If donald trump does not win ohio, that means he needs to win 59 of the delegates Going Forward, and that is a tough slog in order to ensure that this does not go into a contested convention. They have been worried about ohio. Thats why we saw the campaign change course last night, hold a rally there instead of in florida. He gave out a jobs message, a trade message, trying to paint himself as a better dealmaker, and somebody who will bring back jobs to ohio in contrast with the governor, john kasich. Back to you, lester. Ohio looms large. Peter alexander with the Kasich Campaign there in ohio. You spoke with the governor a short time ago. What did he say . Reporter lester, this campaign has been extraordinarily confident all day, and just moments ago we were given exclusive access into his viewing room where governor kasich was alongside his wife, his twin daughters and his family and friends watching the returns come in today. This is significant because a win tonight would be his first win in more than two dozen tries, all 66 delegates going into his pocket. In his eyes, this would effectively punch his ticket to the Republican Convention right back here in cleveland just about four months away from right now. He said hes been offended and disturbed by the things hes seen donald trump do in the course of this campaign, but said it wont change what he does. Take a listen to part of our conversation. In terms of changing a strategy, im going to be who i am. Im not going to sit around and say how can we get more votes . Im just going to keep doing what im doing because i think people really do appreciate the positive message. Reporter so we expect to hear from john kasich only a short time from now, extending what would be an undefeated streak in this state. He has never lost an election here before. His popularity with Ohio Republicans nearly 80 . Hell have a lot of them to thank tonight if this goes the way he thinks it will. Peter, thanks. A lot of drama on the democratic side tonight. Hillary clinton as we noted is the projected winner in North Carolina and florida. Andrea mitchell is with the Clinton Campaign in west palm beach. Obviously important states but more important are those looming results in the midwest. Whats the feeling there tonight, an dreey . Reporter well, its very upbeat here because shes expected out soon, and this was a significant victory. According to exit polls, she won florida so big that its going to be a very big delegate haul for her. She won broadly with africanamericans, with women, everyone but white men, and very strong support among hispanics as well. So this is going to be a very big victory here for her, and shees at least going to say that shell be ahead in delegates no matter what happens in those midwestern states as well as of course winning North Carolina. And then shes going on to arizona with an ad on the air already in spanish in arz. Lester. Andrea mitchell. Lets go to kasie hunt. Shes with the Sanders Campaign in phoenix. Whats the feeling there as they watch and await these other states . Reporter lester, Bernie Sanders himself on his way to this Election Night celebration in phoenix, arizona. That, of course, coming up later. Aides tell me he, himself, is cautiously optimistic. Hes looking over some of that data thats coming in late from places like illinois and ohio. Really the two states that this is hinging on for them. They wanted North Carolina to be a little bit of a later call. They were hoping that that was going to be something that they maybe could turn late. But of course the question here, that allimportant delegate lead. At this foint, these contests are so close, its not looking like hes going to be able to significantly eat into that support. That said, if he is able to pull out a surprise win in one of these big midwestern states or potentially both of them, ohio or illinois, it could energize these thousands of young supporters who have shown up. Many of them have been here for they will have been for four hours by the time Bernie Sanders shows up. To a certain extent it has a little bit of a Music Festival type feeling. People onstage singing. Many of these are the people that he will be relying on to fund his campaign. No sign that hes going to drop out. Hell be here in arizona and then later this week in idaho. Lester. Kasie, thank you. Lets bring in our political director, the moderator of meet the press. It seems like everything that has played out so far has happened pretty much as expected. Well, i would say on the democratic side, i think Hillary Clinton is having a better night frankly than the campaign expected. We already know shes going to win the night on delegates, and the trend lines look good in ohio. So shes going to win a majority of the five states. Shes on path. We dont know that yet, but shes on track to do that. Donald trump, we dont know yet. Yes, hes got the big win in florida and the big delegate number. The question is does he win two states, three states, four states tonight . Four states, hes on a glide path. Three states and then i think were headed to a convention. But let me show you. Hes got a lot of work to do to unite this republican party. Among all primary voters in three of the swing states, remember ohio, North Carolina, and florida are going to be battleground states in november. Look at these numbers. We asked republican primary voters, trump versus clinton. Would you consider a third party . 42 in ohio said it. 39 in North Carolina said it. These are all republican voters, lester, that are saying theyd consider a Third Party Candidate over the choice of trump versus clinton. Meanwhile, the democrats are ready to unite around clinton. In all five states, we asked who is a better candidate to face trump. More than two to one in favor of clinton. Even a third of sanders voters believed that. So i think what you have, lester, is a Democratic Party feeling comfortable with clinton as their standard bearer. Were not there yet on the republican side even as donald trump continues to show strength. Give me the take on marco rubio. He has suspended his campaign. What happens to his support . How does that affect things Going Forward . Look, i think youre going to see more consolidation around ted cruz. Even if john kasich does win ohio, youre already seeing a lot of rubio supporters are telling me behind the scenes theyre ready to jump on cruz and see if he can be the vehicle to stop trump. As for marco rubio, i have to say, a great concession speech, and it makes you wonder where was that message during the campaign itself . Its amazing how candidates figure out the electorate after they drop out than when theyre actually running. Chuck todd, thanks. Lets turn now to disasters still unfolding in the south where floodwaters continue to rise even after the torrential rain has stopped. Emergency levees are holding for now in louisiana where some 5,000 homes were damaged. But in one texas town where we find our miguel almaguer, its too late to save a community thats lost everything. Reporter this is now the road into deweyville. Highway 12 under water. This home along that roadway, one of many overcome by the flood. The damage has gone from serious to catastrophic. 1,200 ordered to evacuate. These families racing away from rising floodwaters. Brandon barry refuses to leave. I figured if something was going to get here and take my home out, i wanted to see it. Im not scared of the water. Im scared for my belongings. Reporter this disaster fueled by the swollen sabine river. The Community Health clinic swamped under five feet of water. This church will have to be gutted to be rebuilt. Schools, even the police station, hit hard by the day luge. The rising water today hasnt spared any homes. Just yesterday in this neighborhood, some of these properties were dry. Today, thats no longer the case. This whole community is devastated. Theyve lost everything theyve worked their whole lives for. Reporter from the air, we could see the damage spared nothing. Even the cemetery hit hard. All thats visible, the very top of tombstones. The water is set to crest tonight, but the damage here is already done. Lives forever changed. The water isnt expected to recede from this neighborhood for several days, if not a week. Thats when neighbors will be able to return home or at least whats left of them. Lester. Miguel, an entire town. Thank you. Reporter and years of reports kwedsing football safety, now for the first time publicly, the nfl admitted on capitol hill a link between football and the degenerative brain disorder cte. Mr. Miller, do you think there is a link between football and degenerative Brain Disorders like cte . Certainly dr. Mchughs Research Shows that a number of retired nfl players are diagnosed with cte. Strong opiates with names like vicodin, percocet, hydrocodone, oxycontin. Now the cdc is urging doctors to reconsider whether the opiates they prescribe are really necessary. These painkillers are very addictive. They are opioid medications, and it has the same Chemical Properties in it as heroin. Reporter in jacksonville, sarah wilson, a mother of four, was taking up to 35 hydrocodone pills a day. I was taking painkillers to get out of bed in the morning, to be able to function on any level. Reporter it started when her doctor prescribed the opiates after she suffered serious injuries in a car accident. For years, opiates were the drug of choice for treating serious pain, especially after surgery or injury. Now the cdc says they should no longer be the first choice. Telling doctors to use ice, tylenol, or ibuprofen first. Avoid opiates if a patient is already on certain antianxiety meds. If prescribing opiates, start with a low dose. Three days should be enough for most patients. Its terrible. Its you know, people are dying. Were losing 76 people a day to opioids, and i think 46 of them are prescription opioid overdoses. Reporter desperate for help, sarah wilson joined a clinical trial. An implanted drug in her arm stops her opiate craving. I dont think i would be alive if it wasnt for medication.
