Good day on this busy news day. Were back on the air with news coming from john boehner, the speaker of the house. He reported earlier today that he is resigning from congress, and he is about to meet the press, go in front of the cameras on capitol hill. Thats where our Kelly Odonnell is standing by. Put this in perspective for us, kelly. Why now . Lester, this is a stunning and abrupt end to the speaker john boehner. I will take my seat as the speaker enters the room. Listen, my Mission Every day is to fight for a smaller and more accountable government. Over the last five years our majority has vast conservative reform that is will help our children and their children. Were now on track to cut Government Spending by 2. 1 trillion over the next ten years. We have made the first real entitlement reform in nearly two decades, and weve protected 99 of the American People from an increase in our taxes. Weve done all this with a democrat in the white house. Im proud of what weve accomplished, but more than anything, my first job as speaker is to protect the institution. A lot of you know that my plan was to step down at the end of last year. I decided in november of 2010 that when i was elected speaker that serving two terms would have been plenty, but in june of last year it became clear that the swrort leader lost his election, i frankly didnt believe it was right for me to leave at the end of last year. So my goal was to leave at the end of this year, so i planned actually on my birthday, november 17th, to announce that i was leaving at the end of the year. Its become clear to me that this prolonged leadership turmoil would do irrepairable harm to the institution, so this morning i informed my colleagues that i would resign from the speakership and resign from congress at the end of october. Now, as you often heard me say, this isnt about me. Its about the people. Its about the institution. Just yesterday we witnessed the awesome sight of pope francis addressing the greatest legislative body in the world, and i hope that we will all heed his call to live by the golden rules. Last night i started thinking about this, and this morning i woke up, and i said my prayers as i always do, and i decided, you know, today is the day im going to do this. As simple as that. Thats the code ive always lived by. If you do the right things for the right reasons, the right things will happen. And i know good things lie ahead for this house in this country, and im proud of what weve accomplished. Especially proud of my team. You know, ive been here, my 25th year here, and i have succeeded in large part because i put a staff together and a team together, many of which have been with me for a long time. Without a great staff you cant abe great member, and you certainly cant be a great speaker. Im going to thank my family for putting up with this all these years. My poor girls who are now 37 and 35. Their First Campaign photo was in july of 1981, and so theyve had to endure all this. Its one thing for me to have to endure it. I have thick skin. But, you know, the girls and my wife, theyve had to put up with a lot over the years. Let me express my gratitude to my constituents who have sent me here 13 times over the last 25 years. You cant get here without getting votes. I said this often. People ask me, whats the greatest thing about being speaker or about being an elected official . I said its the people you get to meet. You know, ive met tens of thousands of people in my own Congressional District that i would have never have met other than the fact that i decided to run for congress. Over the years as i traveled on behalf of my colleagues and the party, ive met tens of thousands of additional people all over the country. You meet rich people. You meet poor people. You meet interesting people. Probably a few boring ones along the way. I can tell you that 99. 9 of the people i meet on the road anywhere could not be nicer than theyve been. Its been really its been wonderful. Its been an honor to serve in this institution. With that, all right, junior, go ahead. Really . What a surprise. Im curious if you reached this decision last night if the grace of pope francis led you to this decision . No, no. Yesterday was a wonderful day. It really was. Was i emotional yesterday . I think i was. I was really emotional in a moment that really no one saw. As the pope and i were getting ready to exit the building, we found ourselves alone, and the pope grabbed my left arm and said some very kind words to me about my commitment to kids and education. He puts his arm around me and kind of pulls me to him and says please pray for me. Well, who am i to pray for the pope, but i did. Listen, its never about the vote. There wasnt any doubt about whether i could survive a vote. I dont want my members to have to go through this, and i certainly dont want the institution to go through this. Especially when, you know, i knew i was thinking about walking out the door anyway. Its the right time to do it and, frankly, i am entirely comfortable doing it. Who doesnt have anybody following him, is this the guy taking the walk. I have plenty of people following me, but this turmoil has been churning now for a couple of months. Its not fwood for the members, and its not good for the institution. If i wasnt planning on leaving here soon, i can tell you, i would not have done it. If i may, just to continue, there are people who are on the right in your caucus and even outside of this institution who have been wanting to you step down for some time who feel that they have a victory today. Do you feel that you were pushed out . No. The members im glad i made this announcement at the conference with all my Republican Congress because it was a very good moment to help kind of rebuild the team. Listen, i feel good about what i have done. I know that every day ive tried to do the right thing for the right reasons and tried to do the right thing for the country. How can this not be a moment of turmoil . You said you thought about staying two years, but at the time you said it would have left the house in turmoil. You have to keep the government open in a couple of days, debt ceiling. Theres going to be one the barn burner of a leadership. Ill be here for another five weeks, and im not going to leave not going to sit around here and do nothing for the next 30 days. Theres a lot of work that needs to be done, and i plan on getting as much of it done as i can before i exit. As a result, though, does that make it easier in some ways to make some tougher decisions, maybe rely on the democrats to keep the government open next week . Im going to make the same decision i would have made regardless of this. Mr. Speaker, some members of your far right and outside groups could use words like knuckleheads and some other words we probably cant use. Probably. Had you just had enough, and how will anything be different for the next let me tell you, i would not describe it as having had enough. Thats not it at all. When you are the speaker of the house, your number one responsibility is to the institution, and having a vote like this in the institution i dont think is very healthy, and so ive done everything i can over my term as speaker to strengthen the institute and, frankly, my move today is another step in that effort to strengthen the institution. Wont the next speaker face the same thing . Hopefully not. Thats my question too, mr. Speaker. How will washington be different because you leave this institution . What should people watching this expect the house and congress to do Going Forward if youre not here . If the Congress Stays focused on the American Peoples priorities, there will be no problem at all. Wheel we have differences between democrats and republicans, the goal here as one of the leaders is to find the Common Ground. Listen, i talked to president bush and president obama this morning. Ive talked to all my legislative leaders who i have a very Good Relationship with all of them. At the end of the day the leaders have to be able to work with each other, trust each other to find the Common Ground to get things done, and so the Congress Stays focused on what is important to the American People, theyll get along just fine. Speaker john boehner, 13 terms in Congress Announcing that he is stepping down at the end of the month, accelerating his plan to step down at the end of the year. Under pressure from the far right of his party for not being aggressive enough, taking a bigger stand against the funding of planned parenthood, and so deciding that at the end of the month he will resign congress. Lets bring in nbcs chuck todd, host of meet the press. Chuck, he says he wasnt pushed, but sure looks like it. Sure, he was pushed in this respect. He didnt want to shut down the government, and he put his party before himself. By doing this, he guarantees the government is not going to get shut down. Theyll extend this another three months. It will be a new speaker that has to make this decision, whether to have this fight. Let me explain the big picture here, lester. What we saw today where you basically had some grassroots conservative that is happened to be elected members of the house have enough sway to push boehner out, this is the same dynamic were watching in the president ial primary. When you are trying to explain what is powering trump, ben carson, carly fiorina, all these outsiders and how harsh they have been, ted cruz today celebrating john boehner being pushed out. The same dynamic that is creating this wedge inside the republican president ial establishment versus the outsiders where the outsiders look like they have the upper hand, thats what drove john boehner out. This is a larger issue inside this Republican Party that were going to see continue to play out on the trail. A larger issue. Well talk about that later on nightly news. President obama was before the cameras on another matter today greeting the chinese president. He brought up that he heard about swron waner and said he had been taken by surprise. He placed a call to Speaker Boehner. He called him a good man. Heres what else he said. We have obviously had a lot of disagreements and politically were at different ends of the spectrum, but i will tell you he has always conducted himself with courtesy and civility with me. He has kept his word when he made a commitment. He is somebody who has been gracious, and i think maybe most importantly, he is somebody who understands that in government in governance you dont get 100 of what you want. President obama reacting to news that Speaker Boehner would be resigning again at the end of the month. Were covering that story. Of course, the pope continues his journey in new york. A remarkable speech before the u. N. And emotional visit to ground zero. Well have a wrapup of his day and all the stories of the day when we see you coming up for nbc nightly news.
