A lot of this music that I play for you on Saturday mornings takes me back to my childhood at the North Richmond Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend c.w. Newsome our church. And I didn't appreciate it in till I was much older but growing up north Richmond exposed me to all of these multiple genres of gospel music because we sang them all of them every Sunday morning we did an anthem we did spirituals we did hymns every Sunday we did traditional gospel and moved on into contemporary gospel but this particular song that I'm going to play for you a metered him is something that is near and dear to my heart and I hope you will enjoy. If not for. Just the richness of the culture in which the song came from but for its unique art form. Oh God thanks to. The Globe. I. Was. Dad who was reverent pearly Brown with 99 and a half won't do from his cd untitled you're going to need that pure religion. Some of the liner notes in this particular cd. From Perlita Reverend pearly Brown. He was born out in the country not far from Macon Georgia on August 18th 1915. He said that his mother died when he was quite small and his father had left her and white people raised him and sent him to a school for the Blind in Macon he said my grandmother taught me slavery songs and spirituals and when I was small I was all well I always said when I got to be a big boy I want to get off my people and work for myself so I learned how to pick guitar listening to the radio and records I've been preachin ever since I was 15 years old play mostly in Georgia Macon Waycross Albany America's 2 or 3 times in Alabama and Florida. Pearly Brown performs in 2 basic styles the modern hillbilly religious tradition as exemplified by Roy a curve and the Arnold and antique one much like that of Blind Willie Johnson. Pearly could be heard on the streets let's see here since 1922. So there was a little bit about the Reverend The late to Reverend pearly Brown. Next up I have coming for you the late great Mahela Jackson. Well I had a bit of technical difficulty there is sorry about that but that was none other than Sister Rosetta Tharpe. And Rosetta Tharpe was born March 20th 1915 and passed away October than 1973 she was a songwriter guitarist and recording artist that attained popularity in the 1930 s. And forty's with her gospel recordings characterized by a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics and rhythmic a company event that was a precursor to rock n roll. She was the 1st great recording star of gospel music among the 1st gospel musicians to appeal to the r. And b. Audiences and she was later referred to as the original soul sister and the godmother of rock n roll she influenced early rock n roll musicians including Little Richard Johnny Cash Carl Perkins Chuck Berry Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis she was a pioneer in her guitar technique and was among the 1st popular recording artists to use heavy distortion on her electric guitar pre saging the rise of electric blues. That was a little about Sister Rosetta Tharpe before that you heard the Haley and Jackson. Born October the 261911 passed away January 27th 1972 she. Of course was a gospel singer control to 0 and was referred to as the queen of gospel she became one of the most influential gospel singers in the world and was heralded internationally as a singer and civil rights activist she was described by Harry Belafonte as the single most powerful black woman in the United States she recorded about 30 albums mostly for Columbia Records during her career and her 40 five's you know there was 453370 eight's Well her 40 five's included a dozen gold 1000000 sellers so that was a little about Sister Mahalia Jackson Next up I'm going to bring for you sorry yeah Mahalia Jackson Next up I'm going to bring. A protege of Sister Rosetta Tharpe for you let's see if you know who this is. Well that was the protege of Rosetta Tharpe and his name is Richard Wayne Penniman. Otherwise known as Little Richard he was born December the 5th 1932 he's currently 86 years old. He was influenced by Sister Rosetta Tharpe and his dynamic music and charismatic showmanship laid the foundation for rock and roll. Penniman influence numerous singers and musicians across musical genres from rock to hip hop and his music helped shape the r. And b. For generations to come he has been honored by many institutions and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As part of its 1st group of inductees in 1986 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame he is the recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy and a lifetime achievement award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. Little Richard's Tutti Frutti recorded in 1955 was included in the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2010 and it stated that his unique vocalizing over the irresistible beat announced a new era in music so that was a little bit about Little Richard or Richard Wayne Penniman. Recording Volume 4 I stood on the banks of Jordan so I'm going to play this for Ovide here is the Reverend James Cleveland with I sit on the banks of the Jordan on the vinyl on the Savoy label. For. That was the late great Gene Viale And for those of you who knew Reverend Cleveland You probably also knew and saw Minister Jean. Jean told he has a has a book out called I Remember gospel and. I had the opportunity to. Speak with Gene he had come to sing at our church and. He was just a warm engaging gentle person and he talked about how when he 1st started singing with Reverend Cleveland and they would be traveling through the south and Jim Crow was in full effect and how they would send him to the cafes and the eating places to get food for them because he was mistaken for Caucasian he actually was Puerto Rican but in the south he was clearly not a black person and they accepted him inside the cafes in the restaurants so he would be the person who would go to get purchase the food for them as they traveled through the segregated South.
