We're made up of some of the top bay area musicians here and. It was a you know the band was a concept that I had a long time ago probably 10 years ago the we formulated around 6 years ago we have the great Marco Dia's keyboard we have so little Sierra on bass our vibraphonist is Charlie. And then our lead singer we smile as he's minimum number of Bay Area bands pop fiction and the great of on say of course led by Karl that also and. Our percussionist on that song was Julio that as and also question that being and myself. Now Jake you know let's focus on you for a minute because you put the band together but we known each other for quite a long time and I remember you as the dance instructor and. The fine dance instructors out there are may add in the Bay Area and we were working side by side a cafe Kokomo many of the many in need me but how did this come about going from being a dance instructor to actually playing music because you're the bomb will settle for the bad as well as the leader right yes I am. You know. This kind of music. Is very it's very popular with the dancers this genre having the vibraphone and it's sort of related to my roots to my father was a great piano player and his brother was a great xylophone player and we used to have a set of vibes in our in our house too that belonged to my my uncle and I always wanted to perform that sound when I was teaching dance you know I was at Kokomo for 16 years actually teaching dance and that was kind of like getting a sort of a minor ph d. And the music by observing the band and watching the bands and then eventually I started studying the music and begging them to let me play a song here there and maybe it was a novelty but did you always have the Basham to become. While you were you know how did this passion come about because you have to be passionate to do what you do it was kind of I mean it was a challenge for sure I studied classical piano and in college so I have had a musical background but. You know I became more interested in that music because I was dancing to it and I wanted to understand it better and I wanted to dance better to it and and it really paid off. So anyway so how did you come together you said you had this idea for 10 years and searched. Years ago you put it together how did it all come together for you. Well I simply called these guys some of the best guys. I think I have a reputation for being responsible and honest and you know running things well and so I just asked them and they said yes and I'm sure they were very skeptical and it was a big learning curve for me I suffered a lot of humiliation but it was all worth it when we got on stage and you know now I'm arranging composing and arranging music with them and and we did this cd it was and yet again another huge learning experience and and also very fulfilling the how do you also work with a very good friend of mine who we had on the air just a little while ago and I'm talking about produce a great land and wonder what the glory bring to the table that help you put this recording together well Greg you know Greg brings about 30 years of experience in the music business and you know he has worked with all of the guys in the band and so he certainly brought a lot of credibility to the project they respect him and I respect him and. So it was a it was a good mix and he he likes the band he you know when we were in the studio. We started recording goes this sounds like a band that plays regularly. And any you know he was impressed with us we were impressed with him and it was a good marriage now tell us a bit about these cd release parties that are coming up and our audience know when are they going to be taking place and put to expect. Well the 1st one is on a Tuesday night that seems like kind of an odd night to have a party but we've actually been playing at a really cool venue in San Francisco called Bar Fluxus for almost 3 years now at an event. That I promote called Latin vibe Tuesdays and that's kind of our 2nd home you know that's one of the reasons we're we're a tight band we play there every week and it's a really nice venue but it's small it's small and intimate which is sort of like the clubs that you know where this is John our music came from you know really came from like New York and in the sixty's and there are small clubs like this so we of course decided we love the owner Ludo and we wanted to have one of our parties there so we're having that one on the 17th this coming Tuesday. And you know the event begins at 9 and the band starts at 945 and that event and also the other party that we're having is on the following Saturday the 21st dance Saturdays the venues called Space $550.00 and both of those events are also going to have some guest musicians including do see clips a great. Latin acts rapper and he he composed an original rap for us on one of the songs I think we're going to hear tonight so he will be there's a special guest Benny Martinez is going to show up he's been singing with us now and then and. Also lesson by yours truly and also about the lesson by Evan Margot and so you can also learn to dance and hear the band and have a good time on this song Englishman in New York as it is a cover by by our friends doing and. You know when I heard this song. It's really he actually wrote it about a friend of his called his name is Quentin Crisp a very flamboyant gay man that was living an English man who was living in New York and feeling homesick but aside from his homesickness for tea and toast. You know the song brought to mind. The turmoil that we have in this country at the border you know because the chorus is I'm a legal alien but it sounds kind of like I'm illegal alien so I arranged this song and we we had this original rap composed by to see clips that's in the song and it's just kind of our Latin take an Englishman in New York well you know what we want to remind you one more time we are on the cd you. Would You're listening to for $30.00 pledged to be a fan and we are also offering the tickets for the c.b. Release party next Saturday December 21st. So you're really looking for you sound like you're jazzed up for this coming week to see the release party the recording is out there well plans you have for the future Well looking at producing more music of course and. Where we're looking at doing some new arrangements some existing tunes and maybe a remakes of one of the tunes on the cd and. I have. Have a an agreement with one of the actually one of the artists on the cd is another vibraphonist name a young guy named Dan Neville and he's going to arrange a tune for us he's going to be moving to Cali to set up a recording studio for his friend there in January. So we want to do some more more recording for sure and then of course play locally as we are so you're extending the vibe sound and that sound is so catchy and popular from Bad been in the joke but they and then the whole tradition of you know bands that came from there let's see it that both then you know bad it's like that. Fired up on a badge of nation and it's great to see that locally. Do you see that you're fulfilling a need and that's one question and the 2nd. How do you play to the dancers if I may may ask. I think that's pretty it's a pretty easy thing. In the sense that. You know our songs are tempos that are really comfortable for the dancers and. Enough a very simple thing to do is just to keep the song length reasonable so they aren't stuck with the same partner for a very long time. So you know the dancers appreciate things like that but of course you and I know that it's it's not so much tempo or it's more about the swing in the music the thing that's kind of driving people to dance and I think that's where they experience in the band you know we have about a 140 years' experience in the band we have some tremendous players too you know you've got some great players in this band so I'll talk about swing you have it you know there's no doubt about it and I think that people want to take advantage of you know this package that we're offering but you know only to themselves to get the sound that you are putting out there and some nice catchy tunes and tools a bit about this too lonely is the night. Well this is a tune that was written by my father many many decades ago actually in 1953 Believe it or not and my sister found it in a piano bench along with some other music that he had written that we didn't really know about and she sent it out to me and it was written as a as a ballot or a bolero And actually one of the bonus tracks on the cd we play it as the original Bolero and that has Chris Del Durande on there singing along with Luis It's a really beautiful to mind singer she is she's an amazing talent but we also took the bones of the music and arranged it for a song Marco Dia's did that and I and I participated in that arrangement and so what we're going to hear is the salsa version of it the 1st part of the song is the original versus original melodies and then it's kind of breaks off into more of a salsa arrangement. You know I want to thank you for sharing your Saturday night with cedar and bringing us the very fine music of. Let people know one more time about both the parties that you're celebrating this week and where people can find more information about your band share.
