Its more than just a monsoon storm. Hurricane newton already causing flooding problems and packing powerful winds down in mexico. Newton has its sights set right here on arizona. This is where it could do the most damage. Both sides of the border are in danger tonight from flooding and tonight crews are preparing for newton but the biggest threat to people is in arizona wont come from above but from right under their feet. Were going to have more on that in a moment. Lets send it to paul horton. You have been talking about newton for the past 48 hours. It is still a category 1 moving over california warmr look at the rain showers starting to move into southern arizona. Thats where we see the book of that moisture. The National Weather service issuing that Flash Flood Watch from douglas to show low. Notice across the greater phoenix area. They have canceled the Flash Flood Watch because take a look. A lot of models are indicating this track moving further toward the east. A lot of rainfall. Red shaded areas from areas of tucson toward the safford area. That is 2. 5 to 4 inches of rainfall. Flooding issues expected there. How long will rain stick real concerns tonight that flooding from this hurricane could have a drastic effect on the u. S. Port of entry. Investigative reporter megan low tells us the ms. Of tunnels beneath the port are at risk of collapsing. Reporter the city of novalis sits in a valley and wind storm clouds form, streets turn into raging rivers. This was july, 2014 when 2 inches of rain dropped on the city. All of the floodwater eventually went underground into the tunnels that flow from mexico into arizona. People reporter in the spring of this year, a Border Patrol agent took us down a flight of stairs. That is a pretty stout door. Reporter to one of the underground rivers that runs border with mexico. How much water gets in here when it is really raining . Wall to wall, floor to ceiling. Reporter the Structural Integrity of another nearby tunnel has caught the attention of arizonas u. S. Senators. They wrote a letter in july warning that the tunnel is in jeopardy of collapsing and that the monsoon season would place the tunnel at further risk. That tunnel runs right beneath the port of entry with the tunnel collapses, it could shut the port and put travelers and customs and Border Protection officers lives at risk. Back in mexico, a storm drain and headed toward the river that flows beneath the port of entry. You can hear water flowing up ahead. The tunnel is pitch black, walls concrete with cracks and gaps, debris littering the ground and water pours down tomorrow, this could be a raging torrent as the remnants of hurricane newton bear down on this city, turning the streets into rivers and filling the failing tunnels to capacity. You were physically there your self. You are down in the tunnels. How bad is it . They dont look very sound but the u. S. General Services Administration is studying the tunnels to see what, if anything can or should be done or going to require the cooperation of the u. S. A 40 Minute Police chase from the west valley Phoenix Police say this started out as a bank robbery call in avondale where three suspects reportedly held before shooting at police and taking off. During the pursuit, two suspects bailed but were later caught. The driver refusing to give up. Witnesses were glad officers stopped them when they did. Its dangerous with kids in the car. They knew how to take care of it. The police did. He has endangered the public for a halfhour as he drives recklessly. It is important to stop him.
