Reporter captain taughten had a hard time saying those words, but he knew the day was coming. I have a great bunch of guys i work with. Reporter firefighters spent the morning packing up. The east contra costa Fire Protection district closed the station and one in brent permanently. That means there are only 27 firefighters to protect 100,000 people over a huge area. 250 square miles. They are placed in a tough decision. They are being asked to do twice as much work now with half the amount of guys and very little support from the public or the community out here. Reporter voters said no to a special parcel tax that would have generated 4. 2 million a year for five years and kept these stations open. Its going to mean a longer response time. Bigger face. People not getting the medical help that they need in a timely manner. Thats because the district gets about 9,000 calls a year. Now there are only three fire stations to respond to those calls. In my opinion, east county fire today is at a dangerous level. Its a scary time for everybody. Reporter these firefighters are already the lowest paid in the county. Now some are going to be demoted or possibly laid off. Sad for us. The sad for the public. I mean, were here to help them, but with the resources we have we are going to be limited on what we can actually do. Reporter over the last year 14 firefighters saw the writing on the wall and left the east contra costa fire district. Now on thursday the fire chief and the board of directors will discuss laying off four firefighters. Nyssen, lease a chan lisa chan. How a bicyclist got stuck under a semi truck this morning in a fatal accident. It happened at 8 30 this morning. South fremont boulevard near 880. Semi truck was full of gravel when it passed the female bicyclist riding on the shoulder. As the truck passes her, the truck the trailer gets close to her. She gets scared. She starts to wobble a little bit. She veers into the curb. Hits the curb and bounces back underneath the trailer. Well, the truck driver didnt know he had run over the woman. A witness this to flag him down and let him know what happened. He is cooperating with the police. Trouble early this morning in santa rosa. A man who tried to stop a couple of car thieves was stabbed and badly injured. It happened on the 900 block of borden villa drive. A couple blocks away from finley park. The man thought the suspects were involved in illegal dumping, but instead police say the two men had broken into at least five cars. The men will be okay. New at noon a scary landing at lax this morning. The landing gear on a sky west commuter jet failed and the left wing touched the ground as the plane skidded to a halt on the runway. Firefighters were immediately on scene helping people evacuate. Luckily, there was no fire and everyone did get out safely. Passengers say the pilot prepared them for the rough arrival. They were just very calm and cool and they told us exactly what we should do, how we should put our heads down, how we would brace. And then the pilot just brought us right in really smoothly. The Sky West Airlines flight took off from monterey this morning. Mechanics are inspecting airplane to figure out what happened. The san mateo bridge was shut down as crews repaved a key section. Six lanes of a one mile section of the san mateo bridge done with caltrans special polymer concrete. We use polyester, basically plastic as a part of the concrete. Its lighter and much more durable. Reporter caltrans says that polyester concrete blend makes for a quieter, smoother ride. You know what . I think its working. Crews shut down the bridge starting friday night and the work went on for nearly 55 hours straight. Workers applied a special coating it to parts of the bridge and did some maintenance work. Drivers were detoured. Time lapse video shows massive delays at the bay bridge toll plaza all weekend long. The work on the san mateo bridge was long overdue. It was original from 1967. So its 48 years old. It was getting very, very ratdy and a lot of alligator cracking and people were noticing it. It was definitely time after 48 years. Reporter you can hear a lot of little rocks hitting the windshield. Looks like caltrans crews have been doing prep work grinding this asphalt down. They are getting to shut the bridge down yet again memorial day weekend for more repaving work. In san mateo, kiet do, kpix 5. The bridge will be closed one more time during the upcoming memorial day weekend. Cal trains riders get a little extra room. As of today most trains are operating with an extra car. The sixth car will add 150 seats and more standing room curing peak times in the morning and evening. Caltrain bought six used cars earlier this year because ridership is booming. When a dog owner looks into a dogs eyes and pets the dog, the own are will release oxytocin. Love hormone. When one pets a dog, interacts with a dog, ones cortisol goes down. The stress hormone. Reporter connie and her husband welcomed sophie into their home five years ago after connies parents died just a few months apart. She says sophie helped her heal. It just brought me out of that sadness. It as a lot of happiness to our house and home. We couldnt imagine life without her here. Reporter and its a healthier life. Connie and sophie have each dropped 30 pounds. Dr. Marshall, cbs news boston. She says if you are not active and thinking about getting a dog, its best to go slowly. Walk ten minutes a day a few times a week to start and build up to more walking time and then get your dog. No words of english. That never stopped her. I read my first book in english, it was the most amazing feeling ever. At this point we use the unicircle. Reporter she started out in beginning english classes at san rafael high. Fast forward two years. Now she is in advanced placement. The speed with which gabby acquired english language is stunning. She is one of the smartest students that i have. Reporter its been a long journey. This is gabby as a child in guatemala as a child. Their father abandoned them. Then when she was 11 her mother was murdered. It was losing everything. Gabby has been through more than any other i think probably any other student i have encountered. Reporter without mom she was alone. It was her grandmother, seen here with gabby as a toddler, who came to the rescue. When i really have nothing, she was there. She was like my tiny light at the end of the tunnel. Reporter her grandmother used her savings to bring gabby here to live with her. She put off retirement and cleans houses to support gabby. Very tiring. She house cleans and that is very hard for her age. Reporter money is short. Gabby can get some food free at the food bank at school. She wishes she could do more. But knows that doing well in school will ultimately pay off, and to do well. Gabby had to move past the anger she felt after her mothers murder. You learn how to turn the anger to determination. If you leave it anger, it will eat you alive. I dont know that gabby knows how to give up or how to not be persistent. You know, she is thats who she is. Gabby wants to be an attorney. A voice for the poor and victims of violence. There is people who suffer that need that voice. And i know by going to college i am going to help them.
