The suspected shooter then made his way to the second floor, shot one victim, then went to the third floor, where he dropped his rifle and backpack. The suspect crossed fields and ran west, along with others who were fleeing, and tried to mix in with the group that were running away, fearing for their lives. Reporter cruz turned up at a walmart and bought a drink at a

Is i discovered an individual walking on the sidewalk that was wearing the clothing description that had been given over the radio. He complied with my commands and was taken into custody without any issues. There needs to be justice. My friends are gone. A reporter student tyra hemans said she knew cruz was troubled, but did not believe he was capable of killing her friend, joaquin, and assistant football coach feis. He wasnt happy and he had to take it out on people who were just so beautiful. Reporter sheriff israel once again repeated the call for anyone who sees or hears something suspicious to report it. Someone comes forward with information about the suspect, what could you have done if he legally owned a gun . If he legally owned a gun, we couldnt have done anything out arresting him, but we could certainly have followed g. We certainly could have visited him, whether he owned a gun or not. Reporter the a. T. F. Says cruz purchased that ar15 rifle one year ago. Flff, 2,000 people have been interviewed about this investigation. Glor i know the sheriff was animated what more could have been now or in the future if they know more information. Reporter thats right. Glor manny, thank you very much. I did sit down today with a group of
Stoneman Douglas
h udents who felt compelled, they said, to talk to us on behalf of the friends they lost. From left to right on your screen now, they are sierra, ariana, kelce, and jack. They told us that just minutes before the dismissal bell yesterday, the fire alarms went off. Fere had been a fire drill earlier in the day. They thought this might be another one. Edey quickly learned it was not. St so we went downstairs, and they were screaming, code red code red just keep on going. Go back up. It was a very scary moment, but it was hard to believe that someone, an individual, would have this type of power. We didnt know what was happening until our parents, who we didnt tell anything to, ngarted texting us, asking if we were okay, where we are. Then we realized there was an active shooter. Glor you were just 100 i was about 100 feet away from the shooter while he was firing. Glor what did you see . I saw confusion and panic in the faces of people i went to school with, played rec sports with and saw every single day of my life the last four years. The shooter was very active. He was actually walking down my hallway. He had shot and killed my teacher, and my door was wide open. And i was hiding in an open room that the shooter could have easily walked into and killed me. Glor what is it that you want people to know about your teacher . He was just an amazing thrson. Mr. Beigel, his name. And he will forever be in my heart and forever be my hero because he basically saved my life. Wa if it wasnt for him, i might not be here today. T i didnt get to say goodbye to one of my best friends, and i got to find out this morning that he didnt make it. But, i have to think about what im going to wear to his funeral now. Fe i lost quite a few friends yesterday, one that i had class with, who was very close to me. And knowing that theyre gone, and i i would argue with them, and now that person is gone, and i can never say, im sorry. There were a lot of people that we lost, and they were wonderful people with great families. Noose families do not deserve what happened to them. My moms best friend was waiting, was waiting all night because she couldnt find her son, and then now. Hes no longer with us. Uld i think that this could have been prevented. He should have never been able to get a gun. Glor jack, when shootings like this happen, a lot of adults have a lot of conversations about what they think should happen. What do you think should happen . We shouldnt sensationalize
School Shootings
because that would downplay the severity of what this means to the
Parkland Community
and the students and family of douglas. And the best way to go about iscovering from this is by aoviding support, love, and attention to those who need it. And then go about addressing a political agenda, instead of hocause within about an hour and ohalf of hearing that one of my best friends got shot, i turned on the news livestream to see that people using this as an argument against gun control. Glor you heard jack talk about guns. Yesterday was way too early to

about it. I dont i dont think that anybody should be using this for their political agenda. But i do also think, at the same time, this kid should never have been allowed to get his hands on a gun if he was mentally insane. Never. If theres anything that needs to be said right now, its that when you shut this tv off, you have to go home and tell every
Single Person
you know you love them because you never know when your last time is going to be. Glor i know how important that is for you, that message. Were going to go through fais as a family. Stoneman douglas is going to go through this as a family. Parkland is going to go through this as a family. Cod together as a country, we are going to go together through this as a family. Glor do you think you will feel safe when you go back . Through this whole ordeal, we will be brave and fight. Were eagles. Were not puppies. Glor i dont know that ive ever seen a more remarkable, mposed, and

Were going to move just a short fy away from here now and talk to jericka duncan, who has more on the students students talk rnout these warning signs that may have been missed. She has more on that part of the story. Reporter thats right, jeff. Here, you can see that the street is blocked off. This is the area where cruz was sst staying for the last three months with another family. Investigators and people who say they know cruz, asking the question tonight, what more could have been done to stop him . 19yearold nikolas cruz didnt ndpear to have many friends. Former classmate
Vanessa Burton
says he was a loner, but she hung out with him a few times. He liked just hurting things. Ke reporter burton says as a kid, cruz jumped in front of a moving car, and he liked to hurt animals. She said he was kicked out of at least two schools before being expelled from the
Marjory Stoneman

Broward County
sheriff called today for tougher laws to anep guns out of the hands of people with

issues, including forcing them to be examined by
Mental Health

I want to speak now directly to americas children, especially those who feel lost, alone, confused, or even scared. I want you to know that you are never alone, and you never will be. You have people who care about you, who love you, and who will do anything at all to protect you. Glor so the question is, what is being done to protect those children and others . Chip reid is at the white house tonight with more on this part of the story. Hip. Ep reporter well, jeff, the president didnt have a lot to say today about what he actually plans to do about
School Shootings
. One thing he did say he wants to do is work with state and local leaders to help secure our schools and tackle the difficult issue of
Mental Health
. But just last year, the president signed legislation reversing an obamaera regulation that would have made it more difficult for some wople with
Mental Illness
to buy guns. Now, jeff, as you mentioned, the president did not even mention gun control today, and the truth is, as long as republicans are ha charge of both houses of congress, there is little chance of doing anything on that front. E e one thing the president did say today that he definitely wants to do in the coming days is to go to parkland, florida, and visit with families and local officials. Jeff.
