KPIX CBS Evening News With Jeff Glor May 10, 2018

Those notices that are going out tomorrow are going to cause e,ople to lose sleep. Its unfortunate, but theyre required by law. Glor and Steve Hartman, with an update on the caped crusader and boy wonder rolled into one. Reporter how did you get so famous . They like what im doing. This is the cbs evening news with jeff glor. Glor this is our western edition. Were going to begin with the release of three americans held by north korea. A goodwill gesture before the planned summit between President Trump and kim jongun. Mr. Trump welcomed them home in the very early hours of thursday morning, when they arrived at joint base andrews in maryland with secretary of state mike pompeo. Kim dong chul, kim hak song, and tony kim, all held a year or more, but apparently they are in good health. They boarded a u. S. Government plane in pyongyang and made a stop at the Yokota Air Base in japan. Their release came as secretary pompeo visited the north korean capital for the second time in six weeks. He met with kim for about 90 minutes this time, to finalize plans for the summit. Everything can be scuttled. Everything can be scuttled. Pelot of things can happen. Tlot of good things can happen. A lot of bad things can happen. But i think we have a really good chance to make a great deal for the world. Glor the president said the time and place of the meeting has been set. He did not reveal them. But cbs news has confirm the likely location is singapore. Margaret brennan joins us from the brandnew set of face the nation. What does the release of the americans mean for these talks . Reporter well, secretary of sate pompeo said its a gsitive gesture by kim jongun, who is trying to set some good conditions for that upcoming summit with President Trump. But in many ways, this was the easiest part of the diplomacy, because kims real leverage is how advanced his nuclear and Ballistic Missile program now is. Stional security adviser john bolton said yesterday that the white house wants kim to take steps far beyond the halt to weapons testing and ultimately agree to stop enriching and reprocessing all nuclear fuel. So the trumpkim summit will start those talks. Glor all right, margaret. Of course, the president is talking to north korea about its nuclear program. Margas just pulled out of the Nuclear Agreement with iran. What message is he sending to mes and others by pulling out of this agreement by negotiating now with north korea . Reporter well, the white house argues that breaking the deal with iran shows to north korea that they have set Higher Standards for any future deal, but north koreas program is far tre advanced than irans ever was, so this message is kind of muddled. The white house says it now wants a new, broader deal with iran, but after breaking u. S. Commitments, there is very little sign that tehran will sit down to bargain. Glor margaret brennan, thank you very much. We can also report that youll have an interview with Vice President mike pence tomorrow on cbs this morning. Well see you then. In iran, demonstrators took to the streets of the capital to protest the american withdrawal iom the nuclear deal today. And Elizabeth Palmer is in tehran. Reporter the hardliners didnt waste any time. By late afternoon, they had arranged a noisy demonstration. Were in front of the old gaerican embassy right now. A crowd has gathered. This is all highly organized. They started shouting, death to america, and any moment they ice going to set fire to the american flag. Enese students are cheerleaders for irans revolutionary guards, who dont want iran opening up to the world. They never liked the Nuclear Agreement, or j. C. P. O. A. , that shut down Irans Nuclear program, and in fact, theyd like to see it up and running again. But from a distance, you can see this is a pretty small group staging whats really a media circus. As we spoke to the students, an older man came up to tell us he wasnt part of it. What they do, i am not agree with them. Reporter he told us what millions of ordinary iranians re saying, that the nuclear deal hasnt yet, as promised, improved their lives. And now that President Trump pulled out, theyre facing even more hardships under renewed sanctions. Re i have a good job. I am very worried about my future and my family. Reporter are you prepared for hard times . I think its very harder than today. Reporter and then, clearly concerned about regime spies eavesdropping on him, he added ive got fear when im talking with you in this country. Reporter the fact is iranians feel like hostages, not osly to their own corrupt, repressive government, but also to an inexplicably hostile white house. Jeff . Glor liz palmer in tehran. Liz, thanks. The president s nominee for c. I. A. Director defended the enencys enhanced interrogation of terrorism suspects after 9 11, but said she would not bring it back. T na haspel has worked in the c. I. A. For 33 years. She will be the first woman to head the agency, and has led worldwide spying operations. For a time, she oversaw a prison where suspects were tortured. Suff pegues reports, questions about that dominated her Senate Confirmation hearing. Fo reporter even before the Opening Statements shes a torturer f reporter it was clear gina haspel would face a tough hearing. Tr dont reward torture reporter haspel tried to keep the focus on her three decade career at the c. I. A. , some of it spent undercover. I excelled in finding and acquiring secret information that i obtained in brush passes, dead drops, or in meetings in dusty alleys of thirdworld capitals. Reporter but it was her role in the post9 11 enhanced Interrogation Program that has her nomination in question. The very important thing to know about c. I. A. Is, we follow the law. We followed the law then, and we follow the law now. Reporter haspel served at a socalled c. I. A. Black site where toplevel alqaeda prisoners were subjected to harsh interrogation techniques, like waterboarding, which ngmulates drowning. Those methods are now banned, but during the president ial campaign, candidate trump pvocated for their use. Torture works, okay, folks. Usu know, i have these guys, torture doesnt work. Itlieve me, it works, okay. If this president asks you to do something that you find nrally objectionable, will you carry that out, that option that order, or not . Senator, my moral compass is strong. I would not allow the c. I. A. To undertake activity that i thought was immoral, even if it was technically legal. Reporter haspel was also questioned about a memo she helped author that ordered the destruction of 92 video acordings of the interrogations. She said it was her boss who gave the final order. No, i never watched the npes, but i understood that our officers faces were on them, and that was very dangerous at a time when there were unauthorized disclosures that were exposing the program. Glor jeff pegues is on capitol hill. Noff, after today, how likely is it that her nomination, gina haspels nomination, goes through . Reporter well, despite being grilled by some democrats, she did pick up the support of west virginias joe manchin, who said that he will vote to confirm her. Also late today, susan collins, republican of maine, said that she is a yes vote. And it looks like she has the support of much of the c. I. A. One former employee told me that the rankandfile believes that an insider is Better Running things rather than an outsider with less experience. Jeff. Ga glor jeff pegues, thanks. In michigan, investigators are searching a wooded area for victims of a suspected serial killer. Authorities say the suspect, serving a life sentence for the murder of a 13yearold, recently bragged to fellow inmates about killing as many as seven girls decades ago. More on this from nikki battiste. Reporter a tireless search on the ground and from above has authorities confident they are close to solving a nearly 40yearold cold case. We do have, as you know, probable cause to believe that this is a gravesite. Reporter police say they started searching here after convicted killer arthur ream boasted to fellow inmates that he killed several girls. They also say he failed a recent polygraph test related to the crimes. One of the missing girls, kimberly king, disappeared in 1979 when she was 12 years old. Her best friend, annie dunaca, was the last person to see her alive. It would be nice to just start the healing process instead of the anxiety of, where is she, is she okay . Reporter in 2008, arthur ream led investigators to the remains of another missing girl buried in the area, 13yearold cindy zarzycki. I know what i did was wrong. Reporter in this undercover video from detroit station wdiv, ream described where and how he buried cindys body. Reporter Authorities Say they have little doubt arthur ream is responsible for the murders of up to seven girls. According to this court document, ream admitted to having a fetish for 13 and 14 year old girls. Today, cindys father ed zarzycki returned to the site where his daughter was found ten years ago. What would justice be for your daughter . I dont know if there is ever justice. Reporter kimberly kings family say they believe a midcast about the missing girls that ran in the fall prompted authorities to reopen this cold case. Investigators say they expect to continue the search here for the next two to five days. Dff. Glor nikki battiste, thank you. Cbs news has confirmed, President Trumps personal attorney got millions of dollars from Companies Seeking access to the president in the months ncter the election. That includes hundreds of ssousands from a company tied to a russian oligarch. Paula reid has more on this. Reporter the money was paid to essential consultants l. L. C. , the same Company Michael cohen used to pay adult film star heormy daniels not to speak about her alleged affair with President Trump. The transactions were first revealed in a document posted by daniels attorney, michael avenatti. They show payments of approximately 500,000 from Columbus Nova, the American Investment firm tied to russian billionaire viktor vekselberg, who has close ties to vladimir putin. In a statement, a lawyer for Columbus Nova described the money as a consulting fee, and said that vekselberg was not involved in the decision to hire hihen. I think that receiving the payments, by the personal attorney to the president , Michael Cohen, its highly suspicious. It may, in fact, show criminal honduct. Reporter avenatti says those crimes could include bank and wire fraud, or money laundering. Cohen is under federal anvestigation, and last month, f. B. I. Agents raided his home and offices in new york. At t, novartis, and Korea Aerospace have all confirmed they too paid cohen for consulting services. A source at novartis tells cbs news, cohen approached the company 18 months ago, promising that he could advise how to get access to the new administration. Thus far, our investigation ntows that there is substantial evidence that Michael Cohen was engaged in soliciting clients and selling access to the highest office in the land. Reporter just moments ago, mr. Cohen asked a federal judge not to allow mr. Avenatti to. Ave anything to do with his ongoing case. He points to the fact that mr. Avenatti has published mr. Cohens bank records and made several inaccurate statements about him. Mr. Cohen told the judge, he believes this is all part of an efort to prejudice his case. Glor paula reid, reporting on this case. Paula, thank you. There was a big explosion today from the erupting volcano in hawaiis big island, and a warning of more to come. O nce kilauea started erupting last week, at least 36 homes have been destroyed, more than 115 acres burned. Carter evans reports tonight on rnew threat a dangerous fog. This is the newest fissure that opened up. Reporter for days, the community of Leilani Estates has been terrorized by spontaneous eruptions, with lava spewing into the air and large cracks randomly opening up in the streets. And now, the impact is growing. What youre hearing is that gas just come out of the ground. Reporter the fumes emanating from the lava flow form a vog, or volcanic fog. Its toxic and can drift far from the eruption. We followed the National Guard uack to the lava zone. Hes taking readings right now, checking the levels of sulfur dioxide in the air to make sure its safe for us to be here. The warning for residents to stay indoors with their windows closed, because high levels of sulphuric acid in the air can cause headaches, irritate the lungs, and even induce asthma attacks. Weve never seen it drop like this before. Reporter dan kelley has asthma and lives downwind from the lava flow. Ive hit my pump, like, three eames this morning. Last night, i had to leave. I was choking. Reporter Scientists Say the lower lava levels in the crater feeding the flows has actually raised the potential for more eruptions in the coming days. An influx of ground water could cause steamdriven explosions. Michael hale lives right in the path of the lava. S i see the wall of lava, and its the size of a house. Reporter his home and car were swallowed by lava. E at was it like to see that and know that its likely your home . It was pretty surreal. I mean, honestly, like a nightmare that you dont wake up from. Reporter this is a mixture of steam and toxic gas that is venting from one of the newest fissures. When you get close, all this sulfur in the air smells like rotten eggs. But were safe, as long as the wind is blowing away from us. Weff. Glor still an unreal scene. Carter evans in hawaii. How long do you think well keep oooooohhh you stopped youre gonna leave me back here at year 9 . How did this happen . It turned out, a lot of people fell short, of even the average length of retirement. We have to think about not when we expect to live to, but when we could live to. Lets plan for income that lasts all our years in retirement. Prudential. Bring your challenges. Can be a big bad problem that you could spread to. Family members, including your grandchildren babies too young to be vaccinated against whooping cough are the most at risk for severe illness. But you can help prevent this. Talk to your doctor today about getting vaccinated against whooping cough. Because dangers dont just exist in fairytales. Glor in louisiana, tens of thousands of elderly and disabled could soon lose their ofdicaid benefits because of a state budget shortfall of more than half a billion dollars. Eviction notices are going out to thousands in Nursing Homes and group homes. David begnaud is in baton rouge. This is what i did in my spare time. Reporter betty waller is 89. A polio survivor, her home is this nursing home in baton rouge. Her life savings pays for part of her care, but medicaid pays for the rest. I know i wont be living under a bridge somewhere, but thill, its a scary thing. E reporter she was told today she may be evicted by july 1, one of about 37,000 people in the state who will lose their Medicaid Eligibility if the state doesnt balance its budget. No one knows where theyre going. Reporter jim tucker oversees 12 Nursing Homes in alabama. 800 of his patients could be told to leave. This has the potential to scare the hell out of a lot of people. It has the potential to kill people. Im not scaring anybody by design. This is not a tactic. Reporter thats the governor, john bel edwards. The cuts are so catastrophic, we shouldnt contemplate them, but as we sit here, the legislature has failed to act in a fiscal session last year, and in a special session this year. Reporter republican jay Cameron Henry is head of the Appropriations Committee in the louisiana house. I think what the g. O. P. Wants nmom the government is a budget that is sustainable longterm, to not have to come back every year with scare tactics. Reporter henry told us, republicans may be willing to pass a tax the governor wants, but it would be another bandaid on the states longterm financial wound. D tender what you would tell the governor and the legislators who are debating whether or not to make these cuts . It was something i never thought would be ever taken away. I thought it was here forever. Or reporter louisiana has never before sent out a warning notice like this, but its required to do it by law if its going to cut the medicaid program. But heres the catch, the federal government needs to approve these cuts to medicaid at the state level. So, if the feds say no, then louisianas got to find another option. Jeff . Glor imagine having your parents or grandparents in that situation. David begnaud in louisiana, thank you. Still ahead here tonight, a shortage of lifesaving epipens. Thank you.
