Were going to go now to the bahamas, because tonight the island chain is bracing for more orvere weather just weeks after being devastated by Hurricane Dorian. Tropical storm warnings are up on grand bahama and the abaco anlands. That is for tonight and for tomorrow. And the storm could skirt the florida coast tomorrow and sunday. Well, today, the official bahamas death toll from dorian rose to 52. But there are still 1300 still sssing. Errol barnett is in nassau. Reporter bahamians still staggering after the destruction of Hurricane Dorian are bracing for another hit. Protective tarps are going up as fast as possible. Theres some rain on the way. There are in more winds on the way. How frightening is that . F reporter under threatening louds, we ventured on a supply mission to sweetings cay, a tiny lowlying island off grand bahama, coordinated by retired navy seals and the Conservation Group the sea shepherd, this vessel is loaded with four tons of essentials food, water, generators destined for remote islands. With few boats still intact, locals here are shuttling aid to the few dozen people who remain. That right there. Reporter this is where you rode it out. While dorian churned for almost cree days, nolan cooper and two others took cover in his two story home. The only thing we had was a door protecting us from the rain really coming down. But it was three days straight. Reporter so this is your landing strip. Yes. Reporter on nearby moores island, some are feeling forgotten. To be honest with you, we havent seen the government. Reporter really . Really. Reporter were a week and a half since the storm. We havent seen the government. Reporter now, the government is pushing back on that, insisting it is coordinating this gargantuan relief effort from here in the countrys capital and that private aid organizations are just more visible in the remote areas of this country. But i can tell you that this current Tropical Storm warning in effect is such unwelcome news for the more than 2,000 people in shelters, and, norah, the countless others who are still trying to rebuild their homes. Odonnell it seems terribly unfair. Errol, thank you so much. We want to bring you up to date an some breaking medical news dnight. An f. D. A. Panel is recommending. Pproval of the first drug to treat lifethreatening peanut allergies. They affect about 1. 2 million children, and that is one in every 50 kids. As dr. Jon lapook reports, the new treatment is already offering hope. When i was younger, my mom always had to make everything from scratch. Reporter Danielle Tryon has had multiple food allergies, including to peanuts, since she was a toddler. From early on, she learned the fine art of avoiding exposure. Even just being in rooms, any time that i smelled Peanut Butter i would be hyperalert, but its something that can kill you. Reporter shes had to be given adrenaline four times to counter lifethreatening reactions. Her mother nancy tryon it was hard. It was really hard. Reporter in 2016 danielle enrolled in a trial for a new treatment. Patients swallow a trace amount of peanut protein and gradually scale up. You slowly make your body get used to it over time. Reporter dr. Jonathan spergel at Childrens Hospital in philadelphia is one of the trials investigators. In patients ages 417, two thirds taking the drug were able to tolerate the equivalent of two peanuts. But nearly 12 withdrew because of allergic reactions or side effects, like stomach problems. It means crosscontamination is not such a big issue. T e ha a Peanut Butter sandwich, but you should be able to walk out with less fear. Reporter the treatment has already given danielle, now 17, a taste of her new freedom, like getting a sundae at an ice cream shop for the first time. We gave it to her and watched her eat, we were taking pictures. People probably thought we were ridiculous. Reporter and imagining life in a college dorm. And i could not even just believe that thats right down the line now. Ri shes got her wings. She might as well go off and fly. Odonnell always good to have an ice cream sundae. Reporter good prescription. Odonnell i understand the goal of the drug is not to cure the allergy, right . Reporter thats right, its about accidental exposure to a small amount of peanut protein. Think of the child who is afraid to go to school, a birthday party, go to a restaurant because they may accidentally run into some peanuts, have a lifethreatening reaction. Geyre still not going to be abe to have a Peanut Butter ice cream cone, but they may be able to have a more normal life. Odonnell all right, dr. Jon lapook, thank you. New developments tonight in those mysterious lung illnesses linked to ecigarettes. The c. D. C. Now says there are 380 confirmed cases across 36 states and the u. S. Virgin islands. Six people have died, and tonight Janet Shamlian reports on new laboratory clues that show why vaping is so dangerous. Reporter a study at Yale University tonight is looking at the impact of flavored ecigarettes on young people, and how it leads them to nicotine addiction. As far as why they like the flavorings, they like the fact that the flavorings make the product more palatable. Reporter the researchers found even the ads for flavored products are activating the reward centers of teenagers brains, compelling them to try it. Theres a possibility that the flavorings also make the nicotine easier to use, and therefore, that, then, can lead ef addiction. Reporter in another study at Houston Baylor College of medicine, research on vapings impact on lab mice, found the solvents used to make the product vapable damaged the lungs and were just as harmful as nicotine itself. Vaping can cause quite a havoc in the lung. It is completely different than what cigarette smoke does. Ad reporter dr. Farrah abnormal buildup of fat in the lungs from reaction to the solvents. The exposure lasted four months, comparable to years of smoking s, vaping in humans. What does this say to you about the safety of vaping . That vaping is not safe. Chronic vaping is even worse. And that flavorings, i wouldnt be surprised if it adds to this problem. Reporter the f. D. A. Has been riiticized for being slow to investigate the Health Effects of vaping ecigarettes. The researchers we talked to aid their independent studies will help Public Health officials draw up guidelines for the use of flavorings and solvents in those products. Norah. Odonnell were learning a lot about it. Thank you, janet. Now the road to 2020. There are sharp differences, emerging among the democrats about how to fix Americas Health care issue. The issue dominated last nights president ial debate, and ed okeefe explains what theyre eeguing over. W reporter former Vice President joe biden today doubled down on his concerns about governmentrun Health Care Plans being touted by liberal democrats. You may like the plan you have. You may not want to go into another plan. Reporter last nights debate exposed a rift in the party over whether to expand obamacare, with its mix of private and public insurance, or push for a plan where the government covers everyones health care, known as cadicare for all. Under my medicare for all proposal, when you dont pay out of pocket and you dont pay premiums, maybe you have run into people who love their premiums i havent. Reporter according to sanders plan, the government would cover all Necessary Health care costs, including prescription drugs, and patients could see virtually any doctor they wanted without a copay. But the option for private insurance would go away. And then theres the cost. Estimated at up to 32 trillion over 10 years. How do we pay for it . We pay for it, those at the very top, the richest individuals and the biggest corporations are going to pay more. And middleclass families are going to pay less. Reporter more than half of democrats in early primary states like the idea of medicare for all, but they believe the program would work better if it competed with instead of eliminated private health insurance. Oo do moderate democrats. Nobodys yet said how much its going to cost the taxpayer. It doesnt trust the american people. I trust you to choose what makes the most sense for you. Reporter rather than replace private insurance, biden would offer the option to purchase governmentrun health care. But remember, none of this becomes law unless democrats win the white house and total control of congress or find a way to work with republicans. Norah. Odonnell thats an expensive plan, ed, thank you. And we learned today a u. S. Air strike killed a major isis recruiter in eastern afghanistan. The mission then and now to destroy osama bin Ladens Al Qaeda network. 18 years on, that terrorist group is still here, along with the newest jihadi kid on the block. As for the taliban promise to tover again harbor americas enemies, National Security adviser Hamdullah Mohib calls that a nonstarter. In their ranks today, there are all kinds of terrorist fighting from all around the world. They have chechens, uzbeks, arabs, pakistanis you name it.
