Reporter scott, you can see how strong the winds still are at this hour, and the tornado that came through last night literally tore the front off of the house behind me. And its not just here. This is the kind of damage we saw driving a 20mile radius all around us. The tornados path of destruction was clear homes flattened, wood splintered and piled like matchsticks as far as the eye could see in the tiny farming town of fairdale. This tractor trailer was toppled like a toy. The twister struck around dinner time no sirens, little warning. Wow, you were right here. The tv was sitting there and we were watching the news. Reporter Earl Hagemeyer says he and his wife had to run for their lives after looking out a window and seeing the tornado bearing down on their house. So we made a dive for the basement. We got in the basement and it came through. Reporter you ran down theto basement, you barely made it down and the storm comes and took the roof off. I was in about three minutes of having it happen. It wasnt long. This is the worst day of my life. Reporter by daylight, rescue crews went house to house looking for possible victims. In the nearby town of rochelle firefighters were called in to dig people out of rubble that used to be a restaurant. Customers and employees were eating and had to make a dash to a cellar just before the tornado ripped the building apart. Raymond kramer was among them. When it hit, definitely, we knew it hit. We didnt know how bad. Reporter Melissa Jaime worked there. When i got out, and the first thing i saw was there was a semi that was flipped over, over here, and the buildings pretty much gone. Reporter now, authorities have been using cadaver dogs to search for any remaining victims, but at this point, they do believe that everyone is accounted for. But, scott, residents have still not been able to get into town to see whats left of their homes and they wont before tomorrow. Pelley so many lucky people, though. Anna, thank you very much. Pelley a kansas man could face life in prison if convicted. The f. B. I. Arrested him today as he tried to detonate what he thought was a bomb. Reporter what former reporter what former rotc cadet john booker thought was an explosive was actually fake. According to Court Documents booker, otherwise known as Mohammed Abdullah hassan, had been planning the attack on fort riley in kansas for months. Prosecutors also say booker, who was recruited by the u. S. Army has wanted to hit military targets over a year. Shortly before reporting for basic training last spring booker allegedly wrote on facebook, getting ready to be killed in jihad is a huge adrenaline rush. When the f. B. I. Questioned him investigators say booker admitted that he wanted to commit an insider attack against american soldiers, like major nidal hassan who is on death row for killing 13 soldiers at fort hood in 2009. Last year, congress redefined the meaning of an attack by a Foreign Terrorist Organization to include the fort hood shooting.
