Some places got five to eight inches of rain. Today, there were piles of wood where the homes stood. One person was killed, more than 65 hurt, and more severe storms are racing through the region tonight. Adriana diaz is in bridge creek, oklahoma. Reporter scott, as you can see the rain is starting to pick up again. Now, this overturned chair, this sink, all of this insulation around me didnt come from the building right behind me. It came from a trailer home across the street more than 70 yards away, giving you a sense of the power of this storm. The view from this drone camera brings the path of destruction into focus. This Oklahoma City motel reduced to rubble. Jimmie oquinn was a motel guest. Kept coming, it kept coming. We lost everything. Got nothing. Reporter just half a football field away, the scene wasnt any better. Mobile homes tossed aside. Fire chief keith bryant helped get people to safety. You know, r. V. S and mobile homes dont fare too well in these types of storms. Reporter when you first arrived at the scene, what was your thought . A lot of debris, access issues so all that kind of added to the difficulty that we face. Tornado is on i44 at the moment and getting stronger. Reporter flash flooding made it worse. The one death a 42yearold woman found drowned in her storm shelter. Oh, man. There it is. Reporter the massive storm started to roll through the southwest plains wednesday and throughout the night. The National Weather service says at least 50 tornadoes were reported, spread across more than 460 miles from oklahoma to nebraska. Bridge creek, oklahoma was one of the hardest hit towns. More than 1,500 homes and farms damaged or destroyed. Mark crick lost his trailer home and his welding shop, but he hasnt lost hope. You just got to remember, its just stuff. And, you know, it can all be replaced, and as long as nobody gets hurt and familys all together, were good. Reporter scott, all day, residents have been busy trying to cover up what they can, whats left of their homes. Theyre determined to prepare for this next round of storms. Pelley and more violent weather is on the forecast for friday and saturday. Adriana, thank you very much. There was an emergency in the air late today when smoke billowed into the cabin of a delta jet flying from ft. Lauderdale to new york. Correspondent kris van cleave picks up the story. Reporter this is video from onboard delta flight 2028 as smoke filled the cabin of the md88 jet. The f. A. A. Says more than an hour after taking off, the crew reported smoke in the cockpit and a problem with one of the jets two engines. 60 minutes producer Katherine Davis was on board and shot this video. She says the captain announced he had shut down one of the engines. We could hear the beeping of the smoke alarm, and it was it was pretty quickly the cabin of filling up with smoke pretty quickly. So so, yeah, it was a little nerveracking. They told all of us to put our head heads down in our laps because the the air would be fresher. Reporter another of the 89 passengers on board tweeted this picture of the smokey cabin, calling the experience the scariest flight ever. The pilots landed safely in charleston, south carolina, and tonight delta repair crews are inspecting that engine. Scott, the md80 aircraft is an aging workforce of the delta fleet. Pelley transportation correspondent kris van cleave. Kris, thanks very much. Tonight, tom brady is speaking at a previously scheduled event in massachusetts one day after an investigation found probable cheating in the a. F. C. Championship. Bradys agent attacked the investigator today attorney ted wells, who found equipment handlers probably deflated game balls to make them easier to grip and the quarterback likely knew it. Elaine quijano has more on this. Reporter the star quarterback arrived on a helicopter two hours ahead of his scheduled appearance where hes expected to make his first public remarks since the damaging wells report. I dont have any reaction or comment on it and its only been 30 hours so i havent had much time to digest it fully. Bradys agent blasted the report calling it a significant and terrible disappointment. We spoke to him by phone. He says brady is innocent. The resulting report does not contain a significant amount of toms testimony which provides much context to the conclusions that were reached by the wells Team Investigators reporter but the report contains at least 10 references to bradys testimony, including the quarterbacks response to the charges. Brady denied any knowledge of or involvement in any efforts to deflate game balls after the pregame inspection by the game officials, the report said. According to investigators, the quarterback declined to provide his emails and texts. Scott zolak is a former patriots quarterback and now a radio host for cbs boston station wbz. Do you think brady knew . He handles the balls. I dont think he ordered the code red and say, hey, you know how to do that. But you guys know how i like the balls prepped on a weekly basis. Make sure when the game kicks off thats the way they are. Reporter zolak says the report may look bad to the public but players push boundaries. This is all to do about nothing. Reporter everybody cheats in sports a little . Youre using the term cheat. I think theres a fine line between cheating and games manship. Reporter tickets for tom bradys appearance here at Salem State University are sold out. Scott reporter scott, the nfl has not said when it will announce its decision on a possible punishment for brady. Pelley elaine, thanks very much. Today, the director of the f. B. I. Said the bureau was on to one of the men who attacked an antiislamic event in garland, texas on sunday, and sent a warning to the police there. Jeff pegues is following this. Reporter just before the attack on sunday, Elton Simpson tweeted his allegiance to isis with the hashtag texas attack. That same day at about 4 00 p. M. , the f. B. I. Says it sent a photograph of simpson to garland, texas, where a contest on drawings of the Prophet Muhammad was held. The bureau believed the 31year old might be interested in the controversial event, but the f. B. I. Did not know simpson and his accomplice, nadir soofi, were en route from phoenix armed with ak47s. At around 7 00 p. M. , two men opened fire on police before being killed by a traffic officer. Simpson had apparently received guidance and inspiration online from this american jihadist, mujahid miski, fighting in somalia. Today in an offcamera session with reporters, f. B. I. Director james comey described isis siren song. He said the terrorist Group Reaches out through social media sites like twitter, identifies followers and sends them to encrypted web sites that are difficult to track. Comey says the message is, go kill people, sometimes supplying them with hit lists, sometimes suggesting particular targets. Today a spokesperson for the Garland Police Department Said it had no information at all that simpson and soofi were headed its way. Scott, the f. B. I. Had reopened an investigation into simpson in march but he was not being watched around the clock. Pelley jeff pegues in the washington newsroom tonight, jeff, thank you. Today, a federal Appeals Court said that a controversial Government Surveillance Program is illegal. It is the formerly top secret program that gathers massive amounts of data on phone calls. Not the conversations themselves, but the information on whos calling whom. Jan crawford is our chief Legal Correspondent and joins us tonight. Jan, what does this decision mean . Reporter well, i mean, as a legal matter, i think its largely symbolic. The Appeals Court said the telephone Data Collections program was not authorized by congress under the patriot act but that law is going to expire in three weeks anyway. I mean, the court did not decide the bigger questions of whether the program violated the fourth amendment, and it said it could continue for the next few weeks. So what this decision does is put the responsibility for continuing the program in the future on congress. And already, scott, we have seen senators today from both sides of the aisle saying theyre not willing to do that. Pelley jan crawford, thank you very much. Tonight, we have learned of a wideranging federal investigation into a problem that we uncovered here this week. Correspondent jim axelrod has been telling us that american troops and veterans are being prescribed dubious pain medications that are expected to cost taxpayers up to 2 billion this year. Jims back tonight with todays developments. Jim. Reporter and, scott, we can report tonight there are now multiple federal investigations under way into 90 compounding pharmacies and doctors for suspicious practices. Last night we reported on a doctor named paul bolger in davenport, iowa, who wrote me a prescription for pain creams even though wed never met or even spoken. Dr. Bolger told us he was one of hundreds of doctors doing this part of an explosion in billing for compounding creams thats costing the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars a month. The pentagon tells us today they have suspended payments on all prescriptions signed by dr. Bolger as well as three other physicians. Payments to four compounding pharmacies, scott, have also been suspended. Pelley jim axelrod with our original investigation. Jim, thanks. In another cbs news investigation, 60 minutes reported that Lumber Liquidators was selling laminate flooring made in china that contained high levels of a chemical that causes cancer. Since then, sales plummeted, and the stock price sank. Today, Lumber Liquidators said it will stop selling the flooring. Heres carter evans. Reporter just a few days after Dennis Winkler installed this flooring in his california home, he says he began to have problems. I started getting very, very bad headaches and nausea. Reporter you noticed pretty much right away. Yeah, right away, right away, there was something wrong. Even my dog was lethargic. Reporter when he saw the 60 minutes report on chinesemade laminate flooring from Lumber Liquidators in early march, he decided to rip most of it out. I dont know if it was the floors, but the minute i took it out, everything stopped. Reporter 60 minutes sent undercover investigators to three chinese factories that produce laminate flooring for Lumber Liquidators. They found box after box with labels indicating the floor boards met strict standards set by the California Air resources board, also known as carb. But factory employees told a different story. Reporter in tests commissioned by 60 minutes, 30 of 31 boxes of the product emit as much as 13 times the amount of formaldehyde allowed by carb, but Lumber Liquidators founder tom sullivan defended the flooring. Were never going to sell something unsafe. Reporter the company sent air quality test kits to concerned customers and says of those analyzed so far, 97 came back with formaldehyde levels that met World Health Organization guidelines. But in a federal lawsuit filed today, California Attorney general Alex Robertson accused the company of misrepresenting the test results to customers. I think that theyve been lied to. I think that theyve been tricked and deceived into believing that their results are safe. Reporter now, Dennis Winkler is storing most of whats left of his floor because he is now party to one of more than 100 class action lawsuits. Scott, the company says even though the flooring in question is still being tested, taking it off the market is the right thing to do. Pelley carter evans reporting for us tonight carter, thanks. The ash is waste from burning coal to generate electricity. Over 90 of the wells tested failed to meet health standards. Heres mark strassmann. Reporter from her house, Deborah Graham can see duke energys buck steam station plant. The utility sent inspectors last may to test her well water. They told her miss graham we didnt find anything wrong with your water. Reporter but she began using bottled water last month when the state told her family to stop drinking or cooking with their well water. North carolinas department of energy and natural resources, or d. E. N. R. , said testing showed high levels of vanadium, a heavy metal found in coal ash that may cause cancer. What is that doing to me . You know, have i slowly been poisoning myself is what i thought. Reporter after the dan rivers massive coal ash spill in 2014, d. E. N. R began testing wells within 1,000 feet of coal ash ponds. T while 152 wells have tested positive for toxins above state Health Department standards, duke energy told residents in a letter, we have no indication that our Plant Operations have influenced your well water. In a statement to us, the utility said, elements such as vanadium are common in North Carolina wells and typically caused by the rocks and soil in the area. John suttles is a lawyer for southern environment law center. It has sued duke energy to force the cleanup of the utilitys 32 coal ash ponds. The coal ash contains these metals at concentrations that are hundreds of thousands to millions of times higher than the concentration in the original coal, and theyre dumping in enormous quantities. Reporter if d. E. N. R. Can prove the contamination came from coal ash, it will require the utility to provide a permanent alternate water supply. Mark strassmann, salisbury North Carolina.
