Announcer this mornings eye opener is presented by toyota. Lets go places. Welcome to cbs this morning. It is great to be back. I love summer. I had a great vacation, but its great to see you. Great to see you, too. Glad to get back to work. Lets begin with the news. President obama is banking on support of nato allies in two world conflicts, flying to estonia for minge ing meetings with two leaders. The president will also meet with allies to discuss controlling the terror group isis in iraq and syria. Bill plante is at the white house, where the administration is under pressure to take stronger action. Bill, good morning. Reporter good morning. Good morning to our viewers in the west. The president is taking quite a beating over his Statement Last week that theres no strategy or military operations against Islamic Militants against syria, reinforcement for perception that he is disengaged. Between that and the situation in ukraine, the stakes are really high for his trip to estonia and nato meeting in wales. The president will focus on reaffirming support, advancing down nato troops in afghanistan and the growing threat of the Islamic Militant group isis. The president will meet with british Prime MinisterDavid Cameron who announced monday 500 british, 700 french and 400 germans have gone to syria and iraq to fight. In order to safeguard travel cameron says he wants police in the uk to have the authority to confiscate passports of people they believe have been radicalized, trying to return after fighting in the region. We will in the end, defeat extremism and secure our way of life for generations to come. Reporter camerons announcement comes as isis released the third issue of its english online magazine dabiq. In it, it shows mass executions the latest socalled conquests and execution on journalist james foley. Foleys blood, they claim, is on obamas hands. But at home critics say the president is not doing enough. The problem all summer long is the president has been reacting, reacting reacting. The National Security expert at the heritage foundation, james carafano. This cannot go on. The administration will have to step up to the plate and if anything theyll come back from nato feeling even more pressure to step up to the plate. The u. S. Also wants its nato backers to step up to the plate by placing sanctions on russia. The white house official says thats to send a message to russia which, in his words, says dont even think about messing around in estonia or any of the balkan states the way you have in ukraine. Thank you so much. Russian president Vladimir Putin has tough words of his own, boasting that russia could take over the ukrainian capital of kiev in just two weeks. A kremlin aide said this morning those words were taken out of context in a private phone call. To end the monthlong violence they meet again friday. The u. S. Has the power to quote, talk sense into ukraine to stop the fight. The latest cbs news poll shows just 36 of americans approve of president obamas Foreign Policy. Political director John Dickerson joins us in studio 57. Good morning. Good morning, charlie. Labor day begins the official campaign for the mid term elections. We saw a lot of talk about Foreign Policy. What issue do you care about the most . Its still domestic issues they pick he they say whats driving their vote. But whats motivating republicans in this election is disappointment with the president. The president s Approval Ratings are about 40 . If you ask republicans, more of them strongly disapprove of the job he is doing than in 2010. You may remember 2010 was a terrible year for democrats. So republicans are very motivated. While democrats are depressed. International issues create that depression among democrats and also rile up republicans more. To the extent that were all talking about Foreign Policy it deprives oxygen from democrat opponents who want to talk about their local issues. Steals a bit of the spotlight from them. Talking about labor day, minimum wage increase and minimum wage equal pay. Those issues. Is the president a help or hinderance in these issues . Not isis. Not these Foreign Policy items. He can raise money and he can rally debate. His Approval Rating is lower in the states than it is nationally, while republicans said if he has a cold nationally, he has pneumonia in these key battleground states. One of the key questions in the end, are democrats so depressed that they dont turn out . Will they be so lackluster that the president has to be brought out to roust them . November is a long time away but what does it look in terms of control of the senate . Seven republican senators who faced a Tea Party Challenger in the last two senate elections. Those challenges some nominees for the party werent ready for prime time. Those republican senators incumbents, made it through their primaries. It looks like republican also get get three of the six seats they need. That means republicans can get three need three more seats from about eight battleground races and things are looking good for republicans right now. Thank you. Good to see you. Our chief White House Correspondent major garret is traveling to the nato summit. His reports begin tonight where charlie will be sitting in.
