Is real but what about the stories of flying saucers and space aliens . That and much more this morning on cbs this morning saturday, august 17th, 2013. Captioning funded by cbs good saturday morning, everyone. Vinita, good morning. Good morning. Nice to have you. Glad i could be here. We have some great guest this morning including a veteran rock group from buffalo that made it big. Yeah, the goo goo dolls. Thats johnny theyre going to be performing in the second half. And the dish awardwinning chef afternoon inson. Supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi are promising to defy a state of emergency once again so they can march against the military. A crackdown this week has already left 600 dead. Protesters took to the streets on friday in what the Muslim Brotherhood called day of rage. More than 08 people were kill and there was a tense standoff overnight at a mosque in cairo. Charlie dagata is in egypts capitol. Good morning charlie. Reporter good morning to you, vinita and jeff. Were getting late word this morning that Security Forces have begun to allow people to leave that mosque where theyve been trapped overnight. They sought shelter there from the fighting. They found themselves there after curfew. Many were afraid they would be shot at after they left and after what we witnessed yesterday, theres plenty of reason to be worried. The Muslim Brotherhood said more than a thousand supporters have been trapped in this many offing overnight. Now its a standoff. They barricaded themselves inside. The mosque became a clinic to the injured and a morgue to the victims of yesterdays violence. There are still bodies inside. Theyd begun the cleanup at ramseys scare. Demonstrators by the thousands defied a state of emergency to take part in day of rage in retaliation for the brutal crackdown in cairo earlier this week. Egypt chan Security Forces warn police would use deadly force against demonstrators if they came under attack and they did. At a clinic near one of the marches, we watched as motorcycles evacuated the severely wounded from the front lines of the protests. Most have the same kinds of injuries gunshot woulds to the head, neck and chest. There were no ambulances. Drivers would drop off victims and head straight back. Demonstrators said it was clear the police were shooting to kill. Criminals. Theyre not egyptians. Reporter and even though they could hear the crackle of gunfire up ahead, even though they know they were marching straight into the line of fire demonstrators kept pushing forward. They are determined to take over, a new area for a staged sitin to support the ousted president Mohamed Morsi. The government is determined to stop them by whatever means is necessary. The Muslim Brotherhood has vowed yesterday was just the beginning. Theyre planning a whole week of protests against the government, not just here in cairo, but throughout the country. Lets learn more about the situation in egypt now from thomas pickering. Hes a former undersecretary of state, former u. S. Ambassador to United Nations and former ambassador to both jordan and israel. He joins us from washington. Good morning to you. We watch this schism from egypt and we watch it get worse. Is civil war a possibility here. Vinita it may be too, i think, precipitous to make that kind of prediction but the confrontation as it depose along is certainly tearing egypt to parts through the middle if i can put it that way, with a little sense that reconciliation or any move to stop the bloodshed is in the cards in the early days. And one wants to see that happen. This is an egyptian conflict not one heavily influenced by foreigners. So in many ways those of us sitting and watching on television are riding the roller coaster. Ambassador the time says the attacks on protesters in cairo were calculated to provoke. Does the military want this violence to happen . I dont think it does but i think the military has a very clear idea that they want violence stopped, they want protests stopped, they want things to come back to law and order. Whether that can actually happen under these circumstances since in my view a problematic judgment particularly in quicktime. How can we say the military wants violence stopped when we see whats happening . Well, i think there is obviously serious armed violent confrontation according to the reports that i read this morning on both sides. Thats not to excuse anybody. The military certainly took action on wednesday to try to stop it. I think, in fact they see this as ongoing and perhaps uncontrollable if they dont. That seems to be their judgment and that seems to have motivated their actions. The military are also using the police. The police are out front here. The Egyptian Police are not known as notably adept, well trained, or very good at crowd control, and we see some of that happening as well. Not only that the Muslim Brotherhood is deeply dug in, and theyre showing, in fact all the elements of its own inflexibility in seeing whether through these kinds of demonstrations it can push the military and the new temporary civilian government in the direction of in fact recognizing them their claimed right to rule as a result of the election, and restoring them to power. None of this in my view, is likely to happen. Confrontation seems to be the order of the day. We can take only a little gratification that the death toll seems to be slightly lower than it was the day before but i dont think this is anything we should rejoice in. Thomas weve talked about both sides but i want to talk about the u. S. Right now it seems like were a frustrated bystander. What about this 1. 3 billion in aid . Could that help change course at this point . Well, i think the 1. 5 1. 5 billion, large share of which goes to the egyptian military, if carefully used represents an opportunity for us to have some influence with them. However limited that maybe, cutting it off in my hum billion view seems to be a sure set of circumstances of having no influence. Some think the cutoff is going to drop from the tree like a right pear if they can, in fact induce enough pain on the egyptian side. The truth is that the arab countries are providing multiple amounts of assistance beyond what we are, and our role in the future ought to be to mobilize those outside who have obvious influence in egypt to a common pattern that ought to really direct itself at stopping the violence on both sides. And obviously then moving toward reconciliation. As uncertain and as difficult that is there is no reconciliation process that seems to be worth anything. Theres no leader stepping forward who can make that happen. Those are the things that we should work on however limited. And i believe they are very limited, our resources are to make that happen. Thomas pickering, thank you. Thank you very much. We have more followup this morning from 60 minutes. Usa today is reporting one of those players, ryan braun is set to come clean about his use of p. E. D. S. It might distance braun from rodriguez who has done daily reports and is standing by his story. Reporter red sox fans never need a reason to boo Alex Rodriguez, but last night there was a little extra gusto in their greeting when the highest paid player in baseball took the field. The scandal surrounding arod continues to grow. 60 minutes reports that People Associated with rodriguez in february leaked the names of other players who were under investigation for performanceenhancing drug use, including former mvp ryan braun and his own teammate. He told 60 minutes the purpose of the leak wasnt only to show that arod used drugs. He field some questions before the game. What was your reaction when you saw this . Well i mean its just obviously a very tough situation, but not surprising. Are you saying its not true . Its not true. I spoke to cervelli this morning. We had a positive conversation. He understands that its not true and were on the third base. Reporter the yankee third baseman is allowed to play while his appeal is pending. Major League Baseball says arods suspension is not only for drug use but also for his attempts to obstruct the investigation and sources close to the investigation say the leagues documents is one of the major reasons for the severity in his punishment. I think we can expect a bumpy road. Reporter players are guaranteed confidentality while under investigation for drug use. The league would violate that rule. For cbs this morning saturday, don dahler, new york. Joining us now is jon heyman from cbs sports. Good morning. Good morning. Youve done a lot on this issue. More seems to come out every day. Alex seems to keep taking the field. I was shocked as much as anyone. It seemed unlikely that he would leak other players with biogenesis. Not only is it against them but its an unwritten code. Players do not do this. Ry ebb in 2009 when he gave a conference. He mentioned his cousin. Now was he absent mindedly mentioning judy or intentionally diverting attention from himself. Interesting with the teammates. What are they doing inside the clubhouse . I this tink yankee players are keeping their distance. He certainly has been playing well but it doesnt look like the players are particularly close to him at this point. I know he was popular at the clubhouse with a lot of guys going into this, but its shocking. Cervelli, i would mention him as one of the close players to arod. Braun, he was not close to. Alex, the big star homegrown hero from miami. Ryan braun university of miami product. I know they were not close. So that part of it isnt shocking. But the fact that Francisco Cervelli was mentioned, that is shocking. So this could it backfire . Could this affect the arbitration process as they move forward saying other people did it but now its going to backfire on him . Well its certainly backfired right now publicly. This is not something you do. Nobody looks at this fairably. So in terms of the Public Perception of this it clearly has backfired on Alex Rodriguez. In terms of the hearings that will be coming up im not sure its going to be a major apartment of the hearing. We know that mlb believes there were major violations transgressions by Alex Rodriguez in 2010 2011 2012. Thats the bulk of the case. They also believe he impeded part of the investigation. That could be part no question about it. As far as what percentage of the 211 games he got, i couldnt tell you that. You think he doesnt get the full 211 in the end . Hes going to get close to 211 or 211 in the end. The claim seems to be hes just one of the group, which seems to mean maybe he should get 50, 65 Something Like that. But i wouldnt be stunned if it came out something less than 211 but i think it will be pretty close. These are major transgressions and the fact that they believe he impeded the investigation. That doesnt help much either. Jon heyman thank you very much. Thank you. One of the most challenged fires is near sun valley, idaho. Dry winds are fuelling that fire. 6,000 have had to flee to safety. Another day of heavy rain for the already saturated southeast. And the National Weather service is keeping an eye on the storm thats surfaced. And lets get more from cbs meteorologist craig setzer. Good morning, craig. Good morning. Were watching the western gulf a rather complex system down here. Clearly you can see the swirl here, but this is actually an upperlevel low, not a tropical system. So that is actually limiting the system. Were tracking the low along the southern gulch. As lop as thiess two features stay close to each other it probably wont occur. Well have to wait for the systems to move together or fall apart. That may not matter in the end because a tremendous amount is heading toward the north. We have a stalled frontal boundary there. In fact rainfall forecast shows anywhere from one to three inches. The bad news in this situation is the fronts not moving. The moisture is going to stay in place, so flooding is possible erlg next week. Jeff and vinita. We move to politics now and the National Republicans committee to ban cnn and nbc from holding primary debates. Jeff pegues is in washington with the latest on this story. Good morning. Good morning, jeff and vinita. They released a statement calling it premature. Theres only a script. But the rsvp has made a ban to keep cnn and nbc from hosting the debate. It was more or less a strategy session and pep rally for the republican bus a large dose of the talk was about a democrat. The vote was unanimous. We said to the media with a united voice that a network who spends millions of dollars to spotlight Hillary Clinton is a network with an obvious bias and thats a network that wont be hosting a single republican primary debate. And the announcement through a standing ovation. Ryan priebus bans them if the networks go forward. Theyre not going to get a real debate about substance if its run by a network who wants to help out Hillary Clinton. Were done putting up with this nonsense. Reporter cnn has a document in the works. They say it would extend to clinton commercials. Cnn says we encouraged all interesting parties to wait until the program premieres before judgments are made about it. Unfortunately they were not able to do that. Nbc says the mini series which has nothing to do with the News Division says its in the early stages. The former first lady, secretary of state has not announced whether shes running for president. Rnc says it oohs statement shouldnt be encouraging without giving the republican candidates equal time. In the last president ial election cycle there were more than 20 gop debates. According to the rnc chairman allows gop candidates to be and these are his words, sliced and diced. Jeff and vinita .
