The accused gunman in the Fort Lauderdale airport attack faces federal murder charges tonight. 26yearold Esteban Santiago is in custody, accused of killing five people and wounding six others yesterday in a baggage claim area. Dozens more who were not shot also needed treatment. Well have the victims stories in a moment, but we begin with the latest on the investigation. Santiago served in iraq. His family said he came home with mental issues, hearing voices in his head. He was not on a nofly list. David begnaud has more. Reporter this is the mug shot of 26yearold Esteban Santiago. According to the f. B. I. , he is cooperating. He was interrogated for several hours overnight. F. B. I. Agent george piro we are continuing to look at the terrorism angle in regards to the potential motivation behind this attack. Reporter piro says at this point, the evidence indicates ndntiago acted alone and flew to Fort Lauderdale from alaska with the sole purpose of committing a mass shooting at the airport. Authorities say santiago, who had just gotten off of a delta flight, grabbed his only checked bag at the baggage claim friday afternoon. Inside, he had a. 9millimeter semiautomatic handgun and ammunition. ,e allegedly went into the bathroom, loaded the gun, then walked out and started shooting. Yerk lea was an eyewitness. People were running trying to get away from him as he was walking in that area. I mean, he did not say a single word. He was emotionless. Reporter santiago surrendered by laying on the ground as a sheriffs deputy approached him. Scott israel is the Broward County sheriff. Tom the moment the first shot was fired, how long did it take your deputy who ended up encountering the gunman to get there . It was approximately 7080 seconds. Reporter back in november, santiago walked into an f. B. I. Field office in anchorage, alaska, complaining the c. I. A. Was forcing him to watch isis terror videos. A Law Enforcement source told cbs news he was carrying a gun, which he checked at the front desk. Ie f. B. I. Called local police, which had him committed for a mental evaluation. Theriagos brother, bryan, in puerto rico, says the former National Guardsman got his gun gck once he was released from the hospital. The problem here is not that they committed him but that they tly left him there for four days, says bryan, and then give him his weapon back . So one of the Big Questions now was that weapon the same gun that was used in the mass shooting here at the airport . Fort Lauderdale International opened early this morning. Ionareds of flights were canceled, but for these people who were waiting in line and have been for hours, they appear to be luck i enough tow get out tonight. Rina, the airport says it has 20,000 bags and other personal items it still has to return to stranded passengers who are just waiting to get out of town. Ninan i imagine it will take some time. Get down. And then we all dropped to the floor. Reporter Steve Frappier had just arrived from atlanta when the suspected gunman started his rampage. Frappier dropped to the floor and watched from a few feet away as Esteban Santiago calmly walked through the baggage claim and shot travelers ducking for cover. The shooter, the entire time for the ordeal, never said a nngle word, and he never and he was cool as a cucumber the entire time. Thats when i knew this guy this guys trained. Im on the ground and watching people 10 to 15 feet in front of inget hit in the head. Reporter Olga Wolterling was one of the five people killed. The marrieta, georgia, resident was a greatgrandmother and celebrating her husbands 90th birthday. Her family released a statement saying 62yearold terry andres was also killed. A 12year volunteer with the Virginia Beach fire department, his colleagues said frappier is lucky to be alive. Ncring the chaos, he felt a small pinch on the square of his back under his backpack but didnt think anything of it. When he checked his bag, he found that a bullet had pierced his Apple Computer and was rolling around in his backpack. It was the laptop, the plastic casing, and the type of backpack that i had. The Fort Lauderdale shootings could reopen the debate on flying with firearms. Tony dokoupil has more on this reory. Reporter flying with firearms is legal and routine in therica. But this may be the first time an attacker checked his weapon before flying and then used it is shoot people at his destination when he landed. The Transportation Security Agency allows firearms and emmunition in checked luggage only and strictly prohibits them in carryon bags. Federal agents confiscated a Record Number of guns at airport checkpoints in 2016, more than 3,300, most of them loaded. What we decided to protect in america is the flight itself.
