You were guess before because you were a. Youth Leadership Awards nominee this year and you mind if I tell people how old you are. At 16 year old like I said our youngest co-host ever on the show congratulate. Brokenly the the age glass ceiling around here. Also we will be bringing them on shortly online one of our guests tonight is the journalist journalist back we're going to tap his brain on a couple of things we're going to go over some serious stuff that has gone on in the news plus some other key events that are coming up and some other news stories that we have that are pertinent and relevant but 1st of all so how do you how are you I'm good at how good. You got we were talking before you got a lot of good ideas and I can't wait for you to share them with everybody so that when that is exciting. One of the upcoming things that we want to highlight and make sure that everybody has on their calendar is in the local area this month pride a vent of note is going to be the heart of value pride and if you want more information on it you can find it at Valley pride dot org. The event will take place August 18th at the y. W. C. . Which is located at $340.00. 8 in Watson. That event will take place from 11 am to 4 pm on again August 18th the theme of it this year is remembering 50 years of stone wall. 50 years of Stonewall trailblazers power to the youth. Cody that's meant to incorporate your generation what what have you heard of Stonewall. Sort of talked about it a little bit. On American. Acknowledgment. Yeah it was you know the story of what happened and I believe it happened the night . Was a bar called the Stonewall Inn which is still there and has been I think it's been 8 and a national monument. And in those days when people gathered in bars people gather in bars. It was oftentimes illegal and police would raid it and of course most of the people in the bar were in the closet and terrified that they would be outed and people would know they were gay and so it was and this was not just happening in New York was happening all over the country and the one night in the Stonewall Inn and the police raided and it started to get testy and some of the patrons. From last I heard because they're different people have different accounts of it it was a lesbian who started fighting back and a lot of the people who today we would term as transgender because they were pretty much out the most out and they fought back and really. Started what turned into a several day riot in that area in New York which caught the attention of the national news everybody heard about it and it brought the idea of l g b t Q Right to the national consciousness as something that existed because most Americans at that point didn't even know we existed at all so it was. Probably talking about them as health like the darkie just you. When you think about it it really wasn't that long I mean 50 years in the grand scheme of things is really just a short period of time. And a lot of people. And you're bringing together a great point because that's one thing about the whole Q movement is of civil rights endeavors in probably in the history of man this one has moved incredibly fast I mean we've made huge gains which is why some of the retro calling out of people is a little bit difficult because. Society had that's where society was only 5 years ago only 10 years ago and that consciousness is very quickly moving and hopefully people your age are the benefactors of that happening yes hopefully So another thing that is happening quite frequently in your lifetime and that is these national things we are just now I mean we're not recovering we just had one here at the garlic trust all locally that our community is feeling the shock of we're only a few years out from the post shooting which a lot of. People felt took very personally because it was that again or a. Night Club and today another Paso. Tell you what I think about what what are your thoughts about all these. Very similar to how lots of other mass shootings I feel that it is just completely unnecessary violence and. To incite fear in. The people around the national community and. That. Cowering away from. Not really moving on and maybe giving our hopes and prayers to the victims and their families I think that we should stand together as a national community and just fight back through. Background checks and just make America a more secure place to be. How have you been aware that these have been happening. I've been aware. Very frequently in my house. But. I like started hearing about these mass shootings I think the 1st. That I really started paying attention to was that. Really struck me personally because even before I realized I was gay I was. Adamant about how I thought that everyone should be treated the same their gender identity. Because before. Sandy Hook I mean there were a couple that. Sandy Hook were you aware of that I mean it may have been. For your folks not address. So I heard about the Sandy Hook shooting but I never really looked into it because I was still really young and so it was something that we sort of heard about and like talked about a little bit like since I was in elementary school. Time myself we never really like brought. Attention to it because it's kind of frightening to think that people would attack 1st graders It's absolutely terrifying and I totally see why that would have been brought to your attention because for exactly the reason you just described as a parent it was absolutely wrenching for me that that ever happened because I it was probably the worst fear a parent could have you send your kids off and you trust that the institutions they're in school they're in they're safe and to find out that something like that occurred. Is unthinkable but the reason was bring that up is for those of us who are older we remember a time when we knew nothing of these kind of events they didn't happen at all and you know it's like I don't know if this happens in your school but today they have active shooter drills Yeah I think it's like every 3 months we practice. An active shooter which is. That's almost shocking to me not shocking because it's a real threat so it's responsible but it hurts that that's a reality that you kids are having to deal with it and deal with practicing it and I kind of want to make an appeal on this to everybody listening because when these things happen it gets very political and people get in their camps and put up walls and the what happens online is people start debating what the aspects of it are that are legitimate to go after and it goes into well this is a mental health issue Well this is a gun control issue Well this is a society issue my appeal is let's drop our labels our labeling of each other the lefties and the righties let's drop that is nonsense there are not 2 types of people thinking all the same things whenever anybody talks about that that isn't a truism because people are diverse and people have a variety of spectrums within them we need to come together and sit down and put everything on the table we need to problem solve this like we've never problem solved anything before in our lives because this is to put this in perspective in since 2013 there have been 2128 mass shootings not deaths mass shootings in that time period and a mass shooting is defined in this is from the gun violence archive and they define a mass shooting as being a shooting in which. Are shot so you put that number into. Affective easily the amount of people killed is equal to the people who died in 911. And and 911 when we got attacked by 911. We started 2 that are still going on today those words are going on your entire life. I can't we do something about this problem. I think that a large reason why. Being passed. Because the n.r.a. Is lobbying so much money into Congress into. Many. In which the n.r.a. Essentially has a say in which way the government is in a sense right that there is definitely that protection protectionism and I would still invite people who are very adamant about holding their guns and everything else come to the table and help us figure this out you know it's like we don't you know it's not this this doesn't have to be amended from one area or the other we have to deal with guns are the most especially these assault rifles are the most efficient killing weapons in somebodies hands they will kill the most people in the shortest amount of time that's not a question it's a fact it's how they were designed exactly rifles were designed by governments and militaries even back to when. Africa in which they were thinking how can I take down the largest amount of people with the least amount of. Whatever reason you have to hold on to one for collection for whatever because you're law abiding that's fine let's come to the table but we can't make these available to everybody we have to deal with mental health we have to deal with it at the same time it's not either Exactly and we have to deal with society because there are areas of society where we have normalised I don't know but you my sons are one year older than you and they have played these video games that normalize they empower people behind. Guns like this and make people feel powerful when they use the line in. We need to challenge that we need to challenge that experience so that in the wrong hands in the wrong mindset that that isn't empowering people to step forward on this but I am begging everyone listening to us we have to find a solution to this and looking at a 6 year old I do know that this to be your legacy for the rest of your life and I want this to be solved and with that we need to go to a break we have much more after this you're listening to out in Santa Cruz. After the break. 35 years. It may change your life but it is absolutely indispensable for improving the appearance of. It helps improve the condition of psoriatic. In addition to getting vitamin a from food supplements this important nutrient can provide benefits when applied in creams and lotions as well topical vitamin a helps organize the growth of skin cells in other words you can put vitamin a on top of your skin and you can literally change the way grow and develop there are many. Make that claim this is why products that contain vitamin a in its active form are considered drugs the definition of a drug as defined by the f.d.a. The color of music in cannabis August and at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. Brings together. An amount want to. Get your tickets now an hour longer done. Coast to Coast we keep our friends close by and George Norry from coast to coast am coming to a universe near you with this Ok to see always one of my favorite stations all the . Way for our next program right here on coast to coast. It's the. Talk radio and remember to leave. Yeah. You are. In. M. And 18. We are Rob and Cody at the the helm of the mikes and we were just talking about the El Paso shooting which some people listening to our show may be thinking Ok this is an e.q. Oriented show why are they talking about a shooting in Texas at Wal-Mart and the answer is we should all care we should not be identity uniting with these tragedies I mean. The morning that happened I got a a text and call at 7 am that we were having a vigil where it happened just that night across the country and we were already as an Elizabethan community here locally planning to go out and have a vigil for the victims of that shooting and we've had commemorative vigils since then and those are right and appropriate to to mourn and be conscious of that but we need to not not do that for other ones that are not specifically identified as our group or our Try these are Americans these are our people that are being gunned down these are children children. Died in each one of these. We need to step up today so I'm asking people to lead the way since we can relate to something that came so close to home for us to be the leaders in having these conversations and again these conversations cannot vilify each side they need to come together with creativity and brainstorming to find a solution that deals with all aspects of this problem from the d. Develop delivery of these killing machines that fall into the wrong hands whether they're legally bought illegally by whatever the mental state of different people whether it's inspired by rhetoric of politicians are not and by the culture which is is making violence. Something that we put on in some areas up on a pedestal those are the factors we need to come together and do something about it so I'm going to get off my soapbox right now about it maybe only temporarily but I'll step down for a 2nd and welcome to the show our friend Brody go back good evening Brody. And Brody So you being our journalist at hand what are some of the facts around the shooting today that you know about. 21 year old white male from North Texas north of Dallas surrendered to help out so its order is. A shooting or to well mark near the Sierra Vista mall help out surtax troops at this time there are 20 confirmed point 6 people at the moment after the attack the. Field Office of the up they are are in Dallas as indicated earlier saying in the investigations. The bureau is also looking to see if this wasn't. A hate crime about a half hour ago much interest presidents on but I also know a lot as a bottle of the trademark nationals were also killed in the shooting on Saturday morning the president of the United States did respond on Twitter. Basically the president said you know about such Texas but birds are very many killed in a state or local authorities of on 1st month your governor to pledge for support of federal government to be with you all. Abbott himself. Out of cleared about 2 hours ago too. Texas Department of Public Safety of the system. And that is to bring this tragedy. Struck the safest possible on and he goes on to thank 1st responders. Really. Sorry ones I don't know the 21 you were shooting which are all across my great tank . Allan. Miles east of the West or worse territory when your 5 year olds. It created a tremendous amount of chaos and fear as is the case of police pastured. You know rapidly of our current match hearings. Now of course everybody is taking off. At the circumstances. Our one year old was one that impacts. Crime it's very early less to gauge than that. It's a well marked super center which means there's a lot of real estate under the law and according to long course many factors. Take them some time. This large of a crime saying. I'm going to come a question for you when. In the initial reports it sounds like there was more than one shooter have they determined that that is not the case that this was a some gunman. And we're being told that that's the sole gunman Ok And there was a manifesto that is attributed to him online that is a pledged to be his that day did not determine that that is the case is that correct but. Like a. Field Office of the f.b.i. And Dallas. That's right in your. Apartment and so this investigation so. They will make that determination as to whether or not this was a. So you you are really incredibly competent obviously but. Thorough in as each one of these events has happened. You know over the past few years including ones that are international like terrorist or instead Stamboul. You report out on it and people react are you detecting. Complacence across social media around the latest events. You know I had an opportunity to follow. Or I don't watch Twitter Brennan and you know I was a poll survivor and he also assisted. Moderate stuff and he's been a guest on our show yeah yeah we've got him on here to. Have been basically is I think echoing what most people are echoing added. It's problematic at best in 2000 and. 6 As soon as the same governor now Greg Abbott tweeted out you know. This is the governor I'm embarrassed Texas number 2 nation for new gun purchases I'm California let's pick up with a spec Sims and already. Well you know now Terry's point but I mean it at the at the end of the. You know I've covered every masher to your country. Since Columbine I was on the ground all the way through to Paul so I arrived of course after the fact. I did not cover part one and I have determined that I'm not going to cover anymore there was a shooting and 1000 Oaks out of my club I actually used to frequent when I look in California. That kind of hit pretty close to home for me. The Gilroy girl expressed a lot for you. And to Cody's point you know there's a child who's growing up not knowing anything but these things an active shooter drills but focus can his classmates know back at their guy. You know the problem is that you've got way too many people talking past each other and at the end of the day. You know I can tell you as a journalist I can tell you as as story and I can tell you as someone who does research gun control works there saw weapons ban work I have been in combat situations with American Canadian and British troops I can't tell you what an assault why pull data storage human body and really quite tricky tell if you like me through No Thank You are absolutely no possible way that anybody needs outside of the military and I'm going to exclude law enforcement because I don't think they need that damn things either Let's military hardware needs to calm off the streets. Yeah you know it's the we need we need the conversations we need we need action and yeah and to me it's we have to deal with the fact that these are killing machines and the intention of it and even talking the 2nd Amendment we've got to think this out because if you if you follow the 2nd Amendment even through to its logical conclusion a well armed militia meaning that each state needs to be equipped so that it can defend its
