Today, were dealing with the effects of the winter storm that hit siouxland yesterday and overnight. As the morning snow hit, roads and sidewalks began to freeze over. Sioux city was a white out earlier yesterday, with less than half a mile visibility. And the icy sidewalks and streets were making it more difficult for travel. Earlier in the morning, crews were out clearing the streets and spreading sand, but it was slow going. The Winter Weather conditions did cause some problems for drivers. Ktivs tommie clark shows us the tricky travel on sioux city roads yesterday. Snow. This morning after about 9 30 they just started to deteriate quickly. We really saw that significant change. Weve had troopers staggered. Some came out at 4am, 6am, and then i came out at 7 and then well all extend our shifts throughout the day, said i state trooper, john farley. Trooper john farley says with the limited visibility, its important to take extra precautions. We encourage people, turn your headlights on. Leave them on low beams. We always say see and be seen, said iowa state trooper, john farley. And, thats not the only tip for siouxlanders that do have to go out on those snowcovered roads. Theres still a thin layer of ice thats built up with road traffic and blowing snow. So theres some important tips to keep in mind. Slow down. Always expect the unexpected. Take care when youre passing or approaching your snow plows. Dont overestimate their speed. You might be coming up on them pretty quick. Not only watching what theyre doing, but watch all around you, said iowa state trooper, john farley. Farley says driving is a 360degree process and its not just whats in front of if you do swerve into a median or ditch and youre stranded, trooper farley says to get out your phone and call 911. Make sure some Emergency Personnel know where you are and they will locate you as quickly as possible. And never leave your vehicle, let the Emergency Personnel come to you. First of all plan your route. We know we are experiencing bad wheather here but we always encourage people make sure they check where their destination, what its like. Make sure you know where youre at on the roadway. If youre traveling down i29 towards the omaha area make sure you know your mile markers. Though the weather outside is frightful, that didnt stop siouxlanders from getting outside and enjoying the fresh snow. Sledders climbed the hills at Grandview Park in sioux city, yesterday afternoon, on a day where classes would have likely been canceled had students not already had the day off for winter break. With another week of winter break for most students, kids are doing what they can to keep themselves occupied until they have to head back to school. This is my first time sledding this year, said sledder, vishakha kanwar. My goal was to go sledding every single day, so thats what im going to try to do. With several more inches in the forecast for most of siouxland today, it should opportunity for sledders to hit the hills. Many people spent their monday digging out from under the snow. Sioux City Residents took to the cold to dig out their cars, sidewalks, parking lots and drive ways. Some had to use more than a shovel to push around all the snow. And while many dont look forward to these big snowfalls, for others, the snow provides work and a paycheck. Most of the time, we dont stop until 8, 9, 10 o clock in the morning. We go all through the night, take shifts. Theres four on our crew, but somebody will take a break and warm up for a little bit, will stop and grab a coffee or whatnot, and we get right back out there. Said ashley kellen, contracted employee. Kellen is part of a crew that clears snow off the properties of a local contractor. She said when these big snowstorms hit, its usually an all day job getting everything cleared off. Residents in texas are picking the pieces after deadly tornados turned homes into rubble. The National Weather service tornado with winds of up to 180 Miles Per Hour tore through the city of garland. The tornadoes were part of a storm system being blamed for 24 deaths in three states. Cnns Alina Machado reports. Barnes and her family rode out the storm inside a bathroom. The familys two cats are still missing. The wintry mix that followed the tornado left little hope of salvaging much of what was left behind. But ruiz says hes glad they have insurance, grateful they have support of family and friends and most of all, thankful his wife and two children survived. david ruiz survivor thankfully a lot of family has sent a lot of money that we can recover and were able to eat and stay somewhere warm with a friend. In illinois and missouri more than a dozen people died after driving onto flooded roads. The victims include four foreign soldiers who were temporarily stationed at Fort Leonard Wood now people in both states are bracing for what could be record flooding in the coming days. Thousands of flights have been canceled or delayed across the us because of bad weather. More than 700 flights were canceled at Dallasfort Worth International Airport alone because of the tornadoes. Ohare International Airport officials reported more than 400 flights were canceled yesterday. And, that also impacted the sioux gateway airport. Officials say a typical travel y sees about 150 cancelations and four thousand delays.
