A debate last night sparked a bloody skirmish outside city hall. [yelling] video posted on youtube showed police pinning down and handcuffing a protester outside counsel chambers. The mans face was cut during that arrest causing him to plead on the floor. The man was part of a group that tried to force its way inside city hall chambers. He had been banking on a table and had refused to stop. Shortly afterwards he was arrested. City staffer was reportedly injured during this ordeal and all of this was happening right outside the Council Chambers when the council was set to vote on a twomonth moratorium on rent increases and evictions. According to witnesses at that meeting, the landlords who opposed that moratorium arrived early and filled the Council Chambers so there was no more space for members of that Tenants Group to go inside and voice their concerns. And after 25 landlords spoke and only four renters, people began chanting in the hallways. They finally said, im not being in a cattle car alone without being any without being able to say anything. They came out and they were chanting. The meeting continued after recess and things calmed down inside the Council Chambers. The council ultimately approved a resolution to approve a 65 day moratorium on rent increases of 8 or more. So overall, a pretty raucous evening outside city hall and alameda yesterday.
