KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 7am June 2, 2016

Nearby. They fired flash bangs and tear gas as we have been showing you live on mornings on 2. The house itself now is on fire. Ktvus janine de la vega live at the scene to get us up to date. Janine. Reporter yeah, it has changed dramatically in the last hour because this house now looks like a raging inferno. I mean, you can see the black smoke is just billowing up into the air and its just orange flames everywhere. Completely engulfed. In the last impact five, ten minutes ago Freemont Fire Department has started dousing water on this. Today flared up before and they contained it. Now we are not sure what caused it to completely sort of explode into flames like this. They want to make sure it doesnt spread to the other homes. Now, the suspect is still believed to be inside. It seems sort of crazy to think how could somebody actually survive there . We just dont know. That is a question we asked a Freemont Police officer that was here in the last few minutes, and he says he doesnt know. Oakland police is the main agency that is handling the tactical part of this. They have the s. W. A. T. Team here. The s. W. A. T. Team has surrounded this house at roberts and washington for the last couple of hours. They relieved the Alameda County Sheriffs Department earlier. They had tried shooting flash bangs, nonelitele flash bangs into the house. They also threw tear gas into the house and thats believed to have started this fire to erupt in the first place. So far this suspect, you know, has not come out at all this morning. They tried to bring out the suspects parents to coax him out. Nothing has worked. At this point we are waiting to hear back from either Oakland Police or Freemont Police to find out whats the result here. Is the suspect inside . Is he dead . Did he somehow escape . We know that there is a perimeter still set up in the freemont and washington area. There has been a shelter in place here in effect. But just sort of a crazy situation out here as we watch this fire just completely burn away and destroy this home that is not believed to be the suspects. This is a house that police say that he broke into because there was signs of forced entry. I dont know if in the live pictures you can see freemont firefighters are actively just shooting water onto that house making sure that it does not spread. Back to you. Janine, are you getting a sense of whether or not officers had any contact with the suspect believed to be inside either through telephone or other means . Reporter the last time that the lets see. It was the Alameda County Sheriffs Department. They were the last agency that gave us an update, and they told us that they spoke to him at about 3 30. They were on the phone with him. The phone went dead. They dont know if he hung up on them or if the phone battery died and thats the last that we heard. So we know they had been negotiating up to that point. Oakland police then took over and they have not told us yet if they ever had any communication since that 3 30 a. M. Conversation that died on the phone. And just to clarify, janine, Oakland Police took over this investigation because Alameda County sheriffs were on the scene for several hours, is that correct . Reporter yes. Yes. You know, it was many, many, many hours for them. So they wanted to relieve the Alameda County Sheriffs Department. They had their s. W. A. T. Team out here. Union city and Newark Police were also helping Alameda County sheriffs. They said lets bring in a fresh team here. We will have Oakland Police, you know, head up this thing now. So they have been out here for the last couple of hours. In the last couple of hours we did hear them and see them shoot flash bangs into the house, and now this latest development is that the house is just, you know, completely exploded in the flames, whereas before it was burning and the firefighters were watching it but it never looked like this. Clearly, janine, you havent had a chance to talk to officers since this fire flared up in the past several minutes. The latest you got from them is they did believe the suspect was still inside . Reporter he honestly said i dont know. We think so. He had just arrived here on scene and he was going to check in with Oakland Police to see if he could get an update for us. But it is very much a possibility that he is inside. He could be dead. We just really dont know. But the s. W. A. T. Team is there watching to see, is anybody gonna, you know, come out . But it seems unlikely just looking at that house and how dangerous that would be. Janine de la vega, the story is unfolding live here as you bring it to us. We will let you go to get some more information and we will bring you back as the standoff continues. Thank you. Well, People Living in the area have been evacuated as a precaution, as we mentioned. About a dozen people are staying at a relief shelter nearby. Now, the red cross has been providing aid to evacuees. Several neighbors say they are in limbo in terms of an update on the situation. So it squashes that fog bank. It will burn off sooner. Travis was roaring earlier. Its coming down. Some yesterday dropped 15 degrees. Low 50s for some. Its a cool pattern for some. Others are in the low 60s. Just depends. 52 lafayette. 52 concord. Consistent there. 59 pleasanton. Logs of fog. That burns off inland but its going to stick and stay on most of the coast. So morning fog, cool, to mild, to warm, to hot. That fog will lift about nine or ten. 50s, 60s on the coast. 60s, 70s around the bay. 80s and 90s through the interior for the usual suspects will be the hottest spots. I mean, we have gone from extreme like overnight. So, i mean, depending on your location. But if you get the fog, its not that bad. If you dont, it will probably be toasty. Looks warmer for everybody friday. Should be cooler sunday, monday. One thing that hasnt changed is that 100 over friday. Thank you. 7 22. When it comes to vitamins, there are so many choices. Experts say you need the core four. We will break down what those vitamins are. There is information about a murdersuicide that led to a lockdown at ucla. What we are learning about the professor killed and a possible motive in the case. Welcome back. Time is 7 25. New this morning the l. A. Police department has identified the shooter in yesterdays murdersuicide at ucla. He has been identified as minak sakar, a former doctoral student who accused the professor he shot and killed of stealing his computer code and giving it to somebody else. The professor is william klug who is a father of two. Police say he was shot and killed in an office near his classroom yesterday morning. They also say the body of the shooter was also nearby along with a gun in what appears to be a suicide note. Initially, this was treated as an active shooter situation so the campus immediately went on lockdown while a Tactical Team went from building to building evacuating students. Our doors dont lock. Its a relatively old building. It was a huge issue. We felt very unsafe. We all got in the farthest corner of the room and turned the lights off and stopped talking. Police say the shooter had been posting complaints about the professor on social media for months saying the professor cannot be trusted. The l. A. Times quotes sources who say the shooters accusations against the professor are untrue. Muni drivers say the union emailed workers criticizing a rise in the cell phone operators, especially in cases where passengers spit on drivers. The union told drivers if they are assaulted they should stop the bus or railcar and, quote, take it out of service. See right now drivers are required to finish their route and then report the incident. Muni says reported assaults went from 18 in 2013 to 58 last year. 7 27. We continue to follow breaking news. A fiery standoff in freemont. Reporter investigators still on the scene here as this fire appears to be put out. The big question, was the suspect inside that burning building . Good morning. We are looking at a commute where traffic is going to be slow in some areas. 24 is bad. Not as bad as yesterday, but a lot of delays here in lafayette. Time is 7 30. Take a look at your screen and you will see how that breaking news situation we have been following for hours for you in fremont has changed dramatically. First off, we see a firefighter on top of a truck putting water on a home that previously was going up in flames. You saw it here through mornings on 2. A home, which is obstructed by trees on the lefthand side of the picture, was going up in flames. First after officers say they fired tear gas into the home as they were trying to get a man believed to have attacked two Police Officers out. There is a definite change in tone here as the scene is described as a little bit calmer as it was just 15 minutes ago when we showed you the house engulfed in flames. We have a number of crews at the scene here. Again we are also focusing on the two Police Officers who were injured, one of whom is in Critical Condition at this hour. The entire ordeal started yesterday afternoon. Here we are 7 30 the next morning, and the key question, brian, is what happened to the suspect . Is he still inside . If so, what condition could he be in . We will stay on top of that story through the morning. Welcome back to mornings on 2. I am gasia mikaelian. Good morning everybody. I am brian flores in for dave clark. After hours of negotiations as we talked about, authorities kind of in this Holding Pattern right now as they watch that home burn earlier. It appears that fire crews have gotten a better handle on the fire that was burning heavily minutes ago. Janine de la vega reported from the scene moments ago. We have a number of crews continuing our Team Coverage. We will bring in christian kafton, also there. You just talked with witnesses in the area who watched the home go up in flames . Reporter yeah. Obviously, its transfixed, the whole neighborhood here, gasia. If you take a look up here you can see that ladder shot that you were talking about earlier. You can see the firefighter on top spraying water down on the scene. This is about a block away from our other vantage point. We are just trying to shoot it from both sides so we can capture the entire scene here for you. What a difference from the last half hour to now. Earlier, there was thick, heavy, dense black smoke. Then steam. Now we are seeing nothing. Presumably, firefighters have the upper hand on this fire. This fire may have been started by officers firing tear gas grenades into the home. We had video earlier where it appeared officers were firing something towards that home. Now, at this point it is unclear exactly what was being fired into that home, but we do know that at around 2 00 this morning we did see some flames starting at that home. This believed to be the home where the suspect involved in the two officers being shot yesterday has holed up there for hours. We understand that officers were in communication with that suspect for several hours, and then at some point in time that conversation, that communication broke down. So it is unclear exactly where the suspect was inside that home, if in fact he was inside that home. Presumably, thats what we will see now. Seems they have the upper hand on the fire that officers and firefighters may be able to get into that home and see whats actually left there. As for the neighborhood, as you can imagine, officers trying to secure the scene. That meant that a lot of residents in the area have been out of their homes for the night. You can see a line of vehicles here that are on roberts street. This again where a lot of residents have been waiting to try to return home. They have been kept away for hours out of necessity by police. David jensen one of those residents here. When is the last time that you were in your home . 2 00 yesterday afternoon. Reporter what have you been hearing from police . Have they been communicating to you . The last time i talked to them was at six, and they were saying a few hours. Reporter and you were out here with us this morning and you could see the flames and that smoke. What do you make of all of that . Well, figured that they are going to let it burn and see if he comes out. Thats about all i could think of, you know. I wasnt thinking they were going to let it burn all the way down. But it looks like they did. Reporter absolutely. And were you out here at the time of the shooting, or did you come home after that. After. I got back in freemont at 11 00 last night. Reporter all right. David jensen, we hope you get home soon. So david trying to give us some perspective on what happened yesterday. He says he, again, has been out of his home for hours now. So the big question on everyones mind still at this hour, was that suspect still inside that burning home . Did he make it out alive . Did he escape . Those are questions we are hoping to pose to Freemont Police and Oakland Police, which took over tactical duties here overnight. Alameda county started with the tactical detail and later on this morning Oakland Police took over. These are questions that we have for them to find out whether that suspect was, in fact, still inside that home, whether he made it out alive, what the status of that suspect is at this hour. Christien, have you been able to get a sense who owns that house the suspect broke into and stayed inside for all these hours . Reporter at this point that one of the major questions that i have been asking the people who are out here on the streets, whether that is their home or whether they know who lives there. A lot of the people say they dont know who lives there. They say they have walked past that area. I think there is some question in peoples mind which of these homes was involved. So to give you a sense, roberts makes a Straight Line like this and then there is another roberts avenue that kind of kicks off to the side. There are a small group of homes in that area. So it could be one of any number of homes. Three or four homes. So i think thats one of the reasons why there is some confusion as to which home this suspect was occupying. Okay. All right. Christian kafton live on the scene for us. Thank you. We will bring you back through mornings on 2. Police officers from agencies across the bay area, as you can imagine, have gathered at san joses Regional Medical center. A live look at whats happening outside that hospital. We are told the first officer who was shot underwent emergency surgery and is in surgical condition. He has been with the Police Department for one year. The second officer is a ten year veteran. He is in stable condition. Sal is keeping an eye on the traffic this morning. Looked busy on the san mateo bridge, sal . Yeah, they were clearing an accident involving a motorcyclist, and the traffic is still pretty busy on that bridge. I still wouldnt recommend it. Lets look at some of these pictures. I want to show you, first of all, the maps getting to the san mateo bridge. In fact, i am going to move it in closer to the bridge. But not only the bridge, but also the area around it. Westbound 92 is slow all the way back to 880. Then traffic slows from 238. A lot of people bypassed the san mateo bridge and go to the dumbarton bridge. Now, the san mateo bridge is still recovering after an earlier accident right near the middle of that cause way section. They cleared it out, but traffic is still recovering, as i mentioned. Bay bridge toll plaza you will see the traffic is backed up all the way out to the macarthur maze and the metering lights are on. So a lot of slow traffic there. Todays weather is foggy. Lets go to steve. Thank you, sal. A lot of areas of fog. Some locations dont get in on the fog this time of year and they will be in the 90s. For others a huge cooloff yesterday. 10, 15 degrees for some. Looks like a rebound today. Pretty foggy from northern sonoma county, napa county to Salinas Valley and also on much of the coast. Cheesy says, good morning, sir. Sir . Who came in . I was trying to see what your guess was for the nascar weekend on 6 26 so i can buy some tickets in the shade. I can see to the 16th or 17th. The third week of june looks cooler. So my advice is buy tickets in the shade just to be safe. A lot of fog on the coast. A lot inland. That inland is going to burn off sooner today. An oak delta breeze. It has been decreasing. Thats usually a good indicator its going to warm up. A lot of 50s. Chilly. 24 hour temperature change minus two, four, three, minus two in san jose. Plus one, two, three, four due to the fog for some, novato, petaluma, santa rosa. If you have the fog, your lows are up. If you dont, way down. The fog gives way back to the coast. Looks like the next few days are going to be hot. This low should help on sunday and monday as it inches towards us. Morning fog, cool to mild to warm to hot. Thick pockets of fog will burn off. Hazy skies. 90s for some. 60s though closer to the coast. Back to gasia and brian. Thank you so much. Hayward police are providing a description of a hitandrun driver who injured a union city motorcycle officer. Investigators say the officer pulled over a driver on tuesday. The San Francisco Police Commission approved a policy requiring officers to begin wearing body cameras. Last night the commission signed off on a set of rules proposed by the Police Officers union. Those rules require officers to provide a brief initial statement about an incident before reviewing footage from the body cameras and then they will give a full statement. It was a compromise, but some critics think officers might adjust their reports depending whats captured by the cameras. Officers say they want to wear the cameras. The body cameras are going to be a powerful tool for us in terms of the investigatory process. They will provide an instant and impartial account of events. They are very important in terms of transparency and accountability. San francisco Police Officers could be wearing the body cameras as early as august 1st. Three of the five most expensive cities for renters in the entire country are right here in the bay area. Welcome back everybody. Time is 7 44. An exercise in maintaining a healthy diet. We know thats important. What about vitamins . Pam cook to talk about the core four in todays health check. Yes. There are so many choices when it comes to vitamins and dietary supplements, but is your daily vitamin giving you what you need . Well, doctors are weighing in as they learn more about Preventative Care and nutrients that can fight off serious illnesses and diseases. One cardiologist says if you have to break it down, consider what he calls the core four. Magnesium, which helps lower blood pressure, blood sugar, stress and headaches. A probiotic. It balances bacteria in the body and supports digestion. Vitamin d makes strong bones and useful for arteries. He says toqu10 is a powerful antioxidant. Normally, we make enough of it. We get older, we take medicines that beat it down. I find my patients feel better with extra coq10. He says it supports the production of energy. Its particularly important for people over the age of 40 and for those who take statins or cholesterollowering medications. More doctors are discussing vitamins and supplements, and they say most of us are low in vitamin d. A lot of those things are things that we can take. It doesnt hurt us to take more of it. They have a lot of benefits. But coq10 i hadnt heard of. Not on my radar. I am not alone. A lot of people hadnt heard through this. So check your daily vitamin and see if you are getting enough of all of those. If its only 20 , you want 100 . And also vitamin d you get from the sun. You need a little bit of time without your sunscreen to get the vitamin d and we typically cant get enough in our diet. All right. Thanks, pam. 7 47. A sixyearold boy in massachusetts i think might have a future as a Police Officer. Listen. My daddy went past the red light. He has a black truck. He was in a brand new car. Just stopped short of making a citizens arrest on his daddy. His 911 call to the quincy Police Department on wednesday after rob which richardson called the police on his dad for running a red light. Robbies father says he didnt run the red light. He took a right turn on red. He tells me, dad, you went through a red light. I said, no, you can go through that one as long as you stop and there is nobody coming, you can go. Interesting listen to him tell me the story about how his father ran the light in his mothers new car. Then i wanted to check on the father to make sure that father was okay because he ran the light in his mothers new car. Robbie has a good start on making his dream of being a Police Officer a reality one day. He was happy to enforce the law, even if it meant getting his dad if trouble. His dad said he didnt run the red light. Sal, how many times have you seen people do that . Is it the california slow roll . Whats the term where you tap the brakes and keep going . California stop is what they call it. You know, young kid, he may not know the different. I give the benefit of the doubt to the father. As a father yourself. Yes. I am sticking with him. Good morning, everyone. Lets take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza right now. It is going to be backed up. Its backed up for a 20minute delay there. No major problems on the bridge, but you will see the normal commute there. 880 north and southbound in front of the Oakland Colliseum and oracle arena you can see traffic is moving well in both directions. The finals game is tonight and that will bring a lot of people to the arena. Just make plans trafficwise. This is 880 farther south. It does slow just after 238 all the way down to the freemont. San mateo bridge recovering from earlier problems. Now at 7 49 lets go to steve. We should mention even though the sharks are down 20, they hit the stinking post five times last night. I was hoping that that wouldnt be the story of todays you know, because i knew it. When they the puck kept hitting the post, thinking, oh. I think hurdle three or four times. All right. A couple of reports. If you are on Mount Davidson in San Francisco, its so foggy. How foggy is it . I cant see the cars on landsdale avenue. Yes, the fog is super thick. Thick as thieves out there. Pea soup. For some you are like, what fog . For others its really socked in. If thats the case, thats warm air aloft. High pressure squashing it. I do my temps very early in the morning. Yesterday was a brutal forecast. Some areas dropped 15 degrees and not far away it was 10 degrees difference. I mean, really tough yesterday. Today should be a little more uniform. There is a definite breeze, but not as strong out to the delta. Yesterday west to 18. That makes a huge difference. Today its coming down. Palo alto, Mountain View low 60s in there. Some locations very cool this morning. A few upper 40s around calistoga hills. 47 degrees. Thank you gary converse for that. If you dont have the fog its 2, 4, 9 degrees cooler. Napa airport 3 degrees cooler. Other locations 2 to 4 degrees warmer compared to 24 hours ago. San jose minesis 2. 34 truckee. 55 in ukiah. A foggy pattern in the monterey peninsula. A lot of low clouds and fog. Whats inland will burn off leaving hazy skies and warmer temps. This little low this time of year you need something to bump it. Another low here. It does look like it wants to drift towards us sunday, monday. That should open the door to a cooler pattern. But today it will be from here to here on the temps depending on your proximity to the coast or bay. If you are inland, 90s to 100 degrees. By the coast 60s. This time its fog. Sometimes its a low deck. Cool to hot. Thick pockets of fog gives way to 90s inland. 50s and 60s by the beaches. Water temps 5155. Not much change there yet. Inland temps 90s. For others, i mean, what was interesting was, brian, you can relate to this, concord dropped 2 degrees. Vallejo dropped 15. It was a huge difference for some. It was cold and foggy in parts of oakland and berkeley and emeryville for a while. 90s. Morgan hill has fog but they will hit 91 degrees. An interesting pattern we are going through here. It looks warmer for all friday, saturday. It did feel cooler. At least there was a westerly breeze. Yes, there was. Out there in mordor. Thank you. Well, more Sexual Harassment allegations coming out of uc berkeley. In minutes details about the lawsuit against a cal berkeley professor. And we continue to stay on top of that breaking news situation in fremont. Hasnt this picture changed dramatically . We will have an update in just minutes. Hotel. Thats why we have public transportation. To buy a new gym bag. Friends decided to honor her life by wearing orange. The color hunters wear while in the woods. Pendleton would have turned 19 years old today. 7 55. This week many people in San Francisco were alarmed to see water gushing into the street while work crews just stood by. This may look like a huge waste of water, but looks could be deceiving. San Francisco Public Utilities Commission suspended the pipe flushing program for the past three years, but now there is enough stored watt and snowpack to allow them to flush out the pipes that carry water to homes, schools and businesses. The water for flushing is a tiny fraction of the total annual consumption. Its a small price to pay for the benefits received, and it maintains that great tasting water for our customers at every tap. Engineers point out another benefit of pipe flushing is that the quality of the water improves immediately because sediment can make the water taste bad . Donald trump says he has a shot to win california in november. His campaign tonight in the south bay. Plus. And these are live pictures this morning from a situation in freemont where the fire that was burning a while ago is now out. A suspect believed to be inside. We will get an update from the scene coming up. We are looking at a morning commute that has been mostly very typical. Slow traffic on highway 4 getting over the hill to concord. Some sun for a few. Thick fog for others. It looks like a warmer pattern for most. We will have the numbers. A home where a shooting suspect was last seen holding up exploding in flames. You can see an hour ago there were massive flames. The man inside was the suspect, the target really of a massive manhunt. Police say he shot two fremont Police Officers both of whom needed emergency surgery, then broke into a house and stayed there for hours. Now lets go right now in freemont. These are live pictures. Police still not sure if that suspect is still inside or whether he is alive. The top of the home was engulfed in flames. The scene much different than it was through the Early Morning hours as you were watching it live on mornings on 2. No more orange flames. Just the mood seems to be a bit calmer. We know that police and fire crews are standing by. Firefighters still putting water on that house. There has been a series of events leading up to this mornings fire. There. The whole incident began at 1 30 yesterday afternoon with a traffic stop in the area of freemont boulevard and washington boulevard. At that point there was an exchange of gunfire. One Police Officer was shot. Police then chased down the suspect moments later which led to a second officer getting shot. S. W. A. T. Teams have been doing door to door hood, or they were, looking for the suspect. At 11 30 Police Tracked him to a home nearby. They fired flash bangs and tear gas. We dont know the exact reason the house caught fire. Ktvus janine de la vega has been on the scene for hours. She has an update. The big question, janine, do we know whether the suspect was inside and perhaps if he is still alive . Reporter no, we have not gotten the answer to that question. I mean, they do believe that he was inside, but we still havent gotten any sort of confirmation that he is dead. As you mentioned, things are much calmer here at the scene. The shelter in place has been lifted. Police officers have opened up washington boulevard, though its blocked off at roberts. You can see there in the distance no flames. The fire is out. And right now firefighters are just sort of standing by. We have seen the s. W. A. T. Team there in the parking lot. They are debriefing. We are just waiting for confirmation on if the suspect is dead. I want you to take a look at these pictures. This video of this home. The video was taken just before seven this morning when the home was just a raging inferno. The suspect who shot the two Freemont Police officers had barricaded himself in that home located near roberts and washington. Officers had tracked him there at 11 30 last night. They had been negotiating with him. They even brought his family to coax him out. They threw tear gas into the home and thats whats believed to have started the fire. Now, you just heard those were popping sounds, what sounded like flash bangs. The s. W. A. T. Team had been surrounding the home all morning long. Authorities said that this is not his house. It appears that he broke into someones house. The last time they had contact with that suspect was about 3 30 this morning. They were on the phone with him and then the phone went dead. Now they dont know is it possible that he escaped . We dont know the answer to that. But right now its hard to imagine, if he was still inside, how really somebody could survive that fire. We hope to find out soon. Again the shelter in place has been lifted. It seems like things here are very relaxed. We are waiting for a spokesperson from either the Oakland Police department, who is heading up the s. W. A. T team, or somebody from the Freemont Police department to come out here to the media that is lined up here to really get an update on is the suspect dead. Is he inside that home. They may actually have to wait to see if that structure is safe to actually enter to see if nothing flares back up. Again we are in a Holding Pattern out here. We should keep in mind this was not the suspects home. This was another persons home. The suspect broke into the home after the apparent shooting with police. It looks like its a lot calmer out there, janine. Would you agree . Reporter absolutely. Absolutely. You know, before, you know, you could tell it was a very tense situation, and now, you know, it seems like the s. W. A. T team, you know, they are leisurely strolling around, just sort of walking around. Let me see. I see an officer might no, i thought maybe an officer was coming over to talk to the media. We are hoping maybe in the next hour we can hopefully get some more clarification out here. Janine de la vega reporting live this morning. Thank you. We want to continue our Team Coverage as well. We have a news crew at san joses Regional Medical center. Thats where the two wounded officers underwent emergency surgery yesterday. These are live pictures out there. You see a couple of Police Officers, police cars there. No terms of the officers, they are still hospitalized this morning. The first officer who was shot has been with the department for about a year. He is listed in Critical Condition. The second officer who was wounded is a detective who has been with the department for a decade. He is in stable condition. Stay tuned through the morning. We will have updates on the standoff, the neighborhood it also caused, and the conditions of those injured officers. Good morning everybody. Lets get a check on your weather and traffic. Weather going to be changing in the next day or two, steve . Starting for some today, gasia and brian. Very foggy for some. Others not so much. Its beginning to warm up for a few. Jamie nelson says where did it go . Mount tam is a gray mystery above Sleepy Hollow this morning. Cool picture. Very foggy conditions. Frederick in the sunset district. Fog is so thick i can barely see across the street. Yes, many locations saying i cant see anything out here. Thats going to lift and burn off and head back to the coast. Westsouthwest 13 at travis. San jose, palo alto and Mountain View with some 60s. Cool for some. Low 50s. Kelseyville 64. It will be hot in lake county. The fog heads back to the coast where it keeps those locations cool. Inland a little warmer. Thick fog. Pockets will give way to hazy sunshine. 60s to 90s. San mateo bridge, sal . Where do you want to start . Actually, we are looking at the east bay, steve. I will touch on the san mateo bridge. Thats improving, actually. But we do have some other traffic to talk of. Lets look at what we have with the east bay commute because that by far has been the easiest sorry, the slowest. Did i say the easiest . Thats what i was hoping. It is the slowest commute as you drive through the area. As a matter of fact if you look at 880 southbound traffic is slow down the freemont. We had an earlier motorcycle accident on that span. I also want to mention getting into oakland westbound 580 is slow out of san leandro and northbound 880 slows out of san mateo as well up to downtown oakland. Some live pictures now. You will see that 880 that i spoke of is still slow past the coliseum driving north, which is on the right. At the bay bridge we have the typical backup. This is a 20minute delay. I do see some improvement. That ramp on 880, if you look at this closely, is Getting Better. That usually improves before we have wholesale improvement at the toll plaza. 8 07. Back to the desk. Sal, thank you. A recent uc berkeley graduate is reportedly the latest to accuse a campus professor of Sexual Harassment. If you are in between, well, be glad because there is no extreme all over. Its just one or the other. I mean, either its cool and foggy or warm and hot. Tomorrow is warm. Cooler sunday, and monday. We have a Major Development in the breaking news we have been following through the morning. Freemont Police Confirmed to the ktvu crews the manholed up inside this home where we saw a raging fire in the early hours of the morning is dead. Police tell us his body was found inside the home. The home itself is near roberts avenue and washington boulevard in an area just west of interstate 680. As we give you a closer look at the house, you can see the charred remains of that building and smoke continuing to rise. Remember when you joined us just about two hours ago it was an inferno and many people suspected, perhaps even assumed, if the gunman, the suspected gunman was still inside, there is no way he could have survived. Now we have confirmation of that from the Police Department. Again the newest information just into the newsroom in the past minute or two Freemont Police say the man who had holed himself up inside that house after he was believed to have shot two Freemont Police officers is dead. The investigation of course is ongoing. Our crews are staying at the scene not only here where the standoff stretched for hours and forced so many people from their own homes, but also at a hospital where the two officers are being treated. In Freemont Police tweeting out they are beginning to reopen some of washington boulevard, we should mention, some of the surrounding areas. A lot of people, a lot of residents in this area were outside of their homes away from their homes for nine, ten, even 11 hours because. Situation. Taking a live look now again in freemont where you see some of the Freemont Fire Department officials there, freemont fire crews there perhaps taking a break from this fire, from this home that was burning roughly an hour and a half ago. The camera is panning around now. This is looks like a shopping area. You see s. W. A. T. Crews also there involved. Thats from union city police. Oakland police also involved as well. But again the news that were hearing, the suspect accused of shooting two Freemont Police officers yesterday afternoon roughly at about 1 30 is dead. We will bring you more through the morning. Want to return to the breaking news we have been monitoring all through the morning. We reported ten minutes ago Authorities Say the suspect accused of shooting two Freemont Police officers is dead. Investigators say they found his body inside a home that caught fire a couple of hours ago. Christian kafton is live at the scene where were expecting a News Conference to start in just minutes. Christien. Reporter yeah, new developments in just the last couple of minutes. Geneva bosque is here from Freemont Police. As we understand, it appears that the suspect is deceased and was found inside the home. What can you tell us . We can confirm we have a deceased subject in the home. We believe it is our suspect. Obviously, it will take some time confirm his identity. That is what we believe we have this morning. So a long night. A lot of activity out here. As everyone has seen and reported, we had a fire at the residence. That is also under investigation. And as for the two officers, they both remain hospitalized in the same condition we last reported yesterday evening. One officer remains in Critical Condition, and the second remains in stable condition. Reporter and we understand that you were in communication with that suspect through the evening. Can you tell us the nature of that conversation back and forth between the officers and the suspect barricaded in that home . What i can say is that hostage negotiators from the Newark Police department and union city were on scene. They were in contact with the suspect during the evening for a period of time. I cant go into a lot of detail about everything that was involved in that, but they were in communication with him. We do believe that is who was in the residence based on that communication. We hope to have more information to provide later on today. Reporter okay. And what can you tell us about the nature of that fire . How did that fire begin . Do you believe that suspect was killed in that fire, or do you think he died as a result of injuries sustained yesterday . We heard reports he may have been shot by one of the officers. Yeah, we have reason to believe he was injured yesterday. Again we will have more information about that later today. There was a fire. The fire is under investigation. Its possible that it was ignited due to gas that was deployed by the Tactical Team. We are still collecting a lot of that information, the facts, and we should have, again, more specific information, more details that we can provide to everyone later on today. But that is what we believe as of now. That is a strong likelihood of what occurred in the Early Morning hours of the residence. Reporter so he died because of the fire and not because of anything from the officers . His death will be under investigation. Alameda county Coroners Office will assume custody of the body to identify and confirm that is our suspect and try to determine the cause of death. Its again very possible that he was injured during the gun battle that occurred in our city yesterday. Its also very possible that he, you know, died during the fire. We dont know if he was already deceased prior to the fire igniting at the home. Initially, the fire was located, you know, on the front porch and the attic. We did attempt to try to put that fire out through the night. It kept flaring up. And so later this morning we were finally able to get it out, go in and confirm that there was indeed a deceased individual in there who we believe is the suspect. Reporter could you talk more about the suspect now that he is deceased . We are not going to put out information right now about the suspect. We hope to share more of that information later today. Reporter could you talk about the officers who were injured yesterday . What more could you tell us about the officers who were injured yesterday . We heard critical and stable condition. Can you tell us more about the officers . We are not going to talk about the specific injuries this morning. One was shot once. He remains in Critical Condition. He has a little bit more than a year of service on with the Freemont Police department. The second officer was struck twice and he is in stable condition. We will not be released their names this morning and possibly not at all. Reporter do you think you gave the suspect enough time to get out of the house . I believe that they were in negotiations for several hours. Gas was deployed. It was then stopped once we were in communication with the subject. He was given many opportunities to come out during that negotiation. Refused to do so. And again from that point on i dont have a lot of other detail regarding the negotiation that took place. Reporter where was in the house . Bathroom or living room . Where was his body found . I believe in a closet. Reporter hiding in a closet . Yeah. He was in a closet when they found him this morning. Reporter can people go back to their homes now . Yeah, the streets have been reopen. The lockdown has been lifted. Washington boulevard, freemont boulevard have reopened. Some of the residences right around the target home were evacuated last night. They will all eventually be allowed to come back into their homes. And we really want to thank our community for being patient with us. This was a long ordeal and something that a lot of people dont ever have to experience. So we really appreciate the patience of the residents living in this neighborhood and all of the concern and support for our department has really been overwhelming. Its been a big ordeal for us. This is not something we go through on a regular basis. We are trained for this. We train for this type of situation regularly. But, you know, again were just very thankful for all of the support that has come in for our officers. Reporter can i ask two quick questions . Were you able to locate a weapon . And what about outstanding suspects . We heard there may be other people involved in the initial shooting incident. Sure. There is some information that during the initial car stop that the shooting suspect was with one or two associates. We are still trying to work up the information on that to confirm it. If we have better information about that, we will definitely provide that later on today. So again i cant confirm it at this point. Reporter was a weapon recovered . Toy not know if a weapon was recovered. Reporter was it the smoke or heat or flames that got him . We dont know the exact cause of death. Reporter what do you say to the homeowner . I know you didnt mean for it to happen. But earlier this morning they said it was the tear gas that probably started the fire . We were in constant communication with the homeowner last night. We were able to make contact with them. They were in direct communication with the Tactical Teams teams that were out there. You know, its hard to say how they are feeling this morning. I am sure that they have a lot of emotional feelings behind this and were really sorry that this occurred. Reporter was he hiding in the house all the time during the search . Its likely he was in the house during this incident. The house that he is in is right at the same location of or in the same vicinity of where the second shooting occurred yesterday. Reporter and he has no ties to that home, as we understand . Yeah, no ties to that home. Reporter i am sorry. Did you say that the fire was likely started by the tear gas canister . We believe that there is a strong likelihood that that was the cause. It is under investigation. And so we cant say for certain. But based on the activity and what was going on with the Tactical Team, there is likelihood that is what happened. Reporter was there anybody in the residence . No. The home was empty and we were able to confirm that all. People that live there were not in the home last night. Reporter and we understand that part of your tactic was to try to bring family members of the suspect out. Were you able to bring the family members out to talk him out of that home . I dont know the exact level of detail regarding the negotiation that took place. Again that was being handled by newark and union city. We were not on the same radio channel the entire time. So the information i had at the command post wasnt quite as fluent as, you know, what was going on out here. Reporter can you give me a name and title . Geneva bosque. I am the Public Information officer. Reporter Geneva Bosque from Freemont Police explaining that that suspect appears to be dead inside that home. Alameda county coroner on their way over here. At this point a lot of questions about whether the suspect died from injuries sustained yesterday in the firefight with officers or whether he died as a result of the smoke or flames from that home that he was in overnight where he barricaded himself in. A lot of questions also about how exactly that fire ignited. It appears that fire was ignited by possibly the gas or methods were using to try to get that man out of the home. A lot of new details. The largest piece of information that suspect does appear to be dead. We expect an update later on this morning on whether there are more suspects possibly outstanding and we expect to learn more about the suspect who appears to have died in the fire at this home. And again the lockdown situation has been lift the. People can return to their homes. Thats a great relief, im sure. Reporter certainly a relief for a lot of the people we spoke this with morning who had been out of their houses for upwards of 12 hours now. We have heard of a lot of people who have not been allowed to return home. Good news they are able to return home. Freemont police in communication with the homeowner where the suspect barricaded himself in. That suspect had no connection to that home. So Freemont Police say that they were in contact with that homeowner presumably giving them intel about that home. Christien, i heard miss bosque use the word sorry when asked about the person who owns the home and the situation that unfolded. The clearly, the home is a total loss. Are you able to ask her or perhaps do you know, when it comes to responsibility for replacing the home and everything inside, is that a Homeowners Insurance thing . Does that fall to the Police Department . Is there another way thats going to happen . Reporter lets see if we can find that out for you. She is still speaking with other reporters. So we will try to get that information for you as quickly as possible. At this point you heard that she said that it does appear that this fire may have been started as a result of efforts trying to get the suspect out of the home. We are waiting for a time to see if we can ask her if the city is going to be on the hook, so to speak, for the loss of that home. Christien, is she is busy, we are bringing you back for the 9. Maybe we can have an answer by then. Reporter thats certainly something we can look to do for you. Thank you. Police from all across the bay area are gathering at san joses Regional Medical center this morning. Thats where the two wounded Police Officers underwent emergency surgery yesterday and they remain today. Live pictures here of the scene thanks to one of our crews there outside the hospital. You can see a number of Police Vehicles. The one right in front is from the Freemont Police department itself. The two officers are still inside. We just heard from the Police Department spokeswoman. We know the first officer who was shot remains in Critical Condition. The second officer who was wounded is a detective who was han about the department for a decade. He is in stable condition. A lot of people want to know the identity of the officers. We will not be getting those in these coming hours at least. Want to go now to a live shot from sky fox this morning above this home in freemont where this took place. Again youre taking a live look now. The home on roberts avenue in freemont where a suspect who had been holed up for several hours stemming from an incident that happened yesterday, as we talked about, two officers had been shot. Heavy damage there on the roof and really looks like the whole house is pretty much destroyed. Uninhabitable. Boy, looks like a lot of damage to the home, as you can see. The body of this suspect still inside. The Coroners Office, has christien had been talking about, making their way to the scene as we speak. But again this suspect accused in the shooting of the two freemont officers is dead. And one thing i am learning from looking at this live picture is these homes are fairly close together. This is not a situation where there is, you know, acreage around a home. I know fire and police crews said they did their very best and they do appear to have contained the fire just to that one home where the suspect was inside. So again so many neighbors were forced out of their homes and have been out for hours now. You can understand their concern because the homes are fairly close together. Again the major breaking news here, the continuation of our reports is that the suspect is dead. The lockdown situation has been lifted. Police at this point have yet to tell us whether or not the suspect died of perhaps a self inflicted gunshot wound, perhaps injuries he received in the initial incident yesterday afternoon, or from the fire itself. We are staying on top of this story. We will bring christien back on the 9. Yes. Coming up, the argument that we waste lots of food has made its way to capitol hill. Out to the maps we go. A new crash northbound 680 stone ridge. Thats putting an unusual backup on 680. I didnt expect this. You see some slow traffic there. There is slow traffic at other way as well, but that is more typical. Some live pictures, i want to show you the bay bridge is cleared out just as we suspected it would when we saw the 880 ramps. Speaking of 880, its slow in the northbound direction. Remember the finals game at oracle is tonight.
