Transcripts For KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am 20151111

The most important thing to do is take precautions before the cold settles . Not everybody a fan of the cold. But i enjoy a good 30s every now and then. Its long overdue. If it wasnt for the fog we would have been even colder this morning. A few 20sand a lot of 30s. It will be sunny and nice, sal. Thank you. 60s on the temps. But another cold night tonight and tomorrow. And the tulle fog will be with us. Nice days, cold nights. It feels great at 2 00 p. M. Yeah. Versus 3 a. M. Use the sweatshirts. Absolutely. Starting this weekend you will have several options when it comes to hitting the slopes. Three more tahoe slopes will be opening on saturday. Kirk wood, heavenly and north star. This weekends openings will be the earliest for the resort since 2012. Alpine meadows opens tomorrow and squaw valley on saturday. For the fourth time the republican candidates for president took the stage and debated their positions. This time there were just eight candidates object the main stage. Some are calling it a debate that finally addressed some of the major issues. With us this morning is do noty fowler. Thanks for joining us. But we are also joined live from milwaukee ross palombo the only local tv reporter who was there at the debate. And ross, lets start with you. See what happens when you have a smaller stage . See what happens when you just have eight candidates there . We hit on good issues from immigration to the u. S. Military, even u. S. Banks. What were your thoughts about the debate, ross . Reporter well, good morning from milwaukee. As you say, debate number four is in the history books. The small stage behind me now that they are tearing it down we can start to think about what happened up there. Here in the audience, there were 3,000 people watching the 8 candidates talking about the financial industry, jobs, the economy. They even talked a little bit national security. It was mostly substantive last night. Not a lot of attacks going on. But there were a few big moments mainly over immigration and over national security. Take a listen. We will have a wall. The wall will be built. The wall will be successful. But for the 11 Million People come on, folks. We know you cant pick them up and ship them back across the border. Its a silly argument. What we need to do is allow people to earn legal status where they pay a fine and work, where they dont commit crimes. Where they learn english. Over an extended period of time they earn legal status. That is the proper path. How is it conservative how is it conservative to add a trillion dollars in military expenses. You cant promote programs that youre not going to pay for and be a conservative. We cant even have an economy if were not safe. There are radical jihaddists in the middle east beheading people. Iran trying to get a nuclear weapon. The chinese taking over the south china seas. Yes, i believe the world is a safer i dont believe. I know the world is a safer and better place when america is the Strongest Military power in the world. Reporter well, those were some of the biggest moments. We were expecting another big moment involving ben carson and those allegations that he was exaggerating his past stories. The stories about him going after his mother with a hammer, about him apparently trying to stab a friend. The story about him apparently getting a scholarship to west point. There was actually only one question about all of that and none of the candidates chimed in about that. Listen to what we heard in the spin room right after the debate. Well, you know, he believes that it will grant him an advantage. And we will see over the course of time whether it is helpful or hurtful to him. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a very well handled debate. Do you think the moderators let ben carson off the hook with not pursuing the questions about his background. No. I think this is a business debate. This is a business debate. And the moderators i thought they did a fantastic job. I really thought it was an elegant evening. Reporter an unusual choice of words there. Donald trump calling the debate elegant. Guys, thats what everyone in the spin room had to say. Everybody thought the debate was fair. Everyone enjoyed the moderators. And everyone enjoyed having more time last night to speak. They had a minute and 30 to answer each question ask then a minute on rebuttal. Ross, we were watching on tv what you saw in person. It seemed to me that the crowd appeared to like what marco rubio had to say. He got the most cheers at least what we could see on television. Was that truly the case watching it live . Reporter no. I think you are spot on with that. It schemed that marco rubio got the most applause on introduction. It seemed like the crowd was with him. And something that you did not see on tv, you know, during the commercial breaks, when the candidates are standing back here on stage, they dont freeze during the break. When you are not watching, here in the theater, everyone gets to see how they interact. And donald trump for example went over and spoke with marco rubio. That was somewhat interesting because he had been attacking rubio over his finances earlier in the week. The only one that didnt move around was Carly Fiorina. That was really interesting for us and for the audience to see. That even though the candidates attack each other, they do seem to respect each other at least in person when theyre on stage. Okay. Ross palombo live in milwaukee for us. Thank for joining us on the 9. Get home safe. Lets bring in do noty fowler. He was talking about marco rubio. Solid performance . He and senator ted cruz from texas are arguing the long game. They both did excellent. They both did very well. Rubio especially stood out. He is articulate and he is he has a way of taking complicated issues and simplifying it in 10 or 15 seconds. Donald trumps handlers may have told him to tone it down a little bit. They served it up on a tee and he could have walked in and attacked somebody. Yet he stood back. He called the night a very elegant neat. Do you think his handlers have said you have to appear more president ial. Yeah. Weve seen the donald trump crazy man to little less crazy to almost normal. You wonder if he and dr. Carson took sleep aides before they got on the stage. Why do you keep interrupting everybody. Tiger cant change his stripes. He cant help himself all the time. I bring up Carly Fiorina to. My question to you is what does she do with it now . She can never grasp that momentum and run with it. She is powerful in articulating her message. She hasnt been able to Say Something that is different than the other candidates in terms of her record in terms of what she wants to do if she becomes president. So we know that she went from a secretary to a ceo at Hewlett Packard out here. But what else, carly . What else. And she doesnt have that background that the senators and governors do. We had eight people on the main stage last night. As the field gets smaller. Many people say john case i can crumbled last night. Do you suspect he will be in the next debate. He will probably be one of the last on stage with chris christie. Kasik is speaking from the moderate side of the Republican Party on sides of immigration. That is not the people that will vote in the nominating elections in iowa, new hampshire. So you have one message gearing yourself towards the pry mar hes. You have another message for the general election. Yeah. If you think about the democratic and republican nominating elections, the people that really turn out are the most committed political activityists in the party. For the republican thats the most conservative people. The most at stake in the election and the people that care the most about who is running. It doesnt leave a lot of room, there isnt as much interest in the middle among moderates. Kasik as a moderate is having trouble. How about bush. 100million. He didnt crumble but did he do it well enough to back off his critics. A man who was the son of a president , the brother of a president and a twoterm governor debates are not his best place to tell his story. He has a very good story to tell, bush does, about himself. Not just about his family. But these debates have not been the place for him. Where does he go from here . He like ted cruz and rubio are playing a long strategy. When we say who is up and down, not a single vote has been cast yet. No one has voted. Three months to the first votes. Bush is saying the debates are part of it. But so is my record and so is my money the bank account and my organization on the ground. The grass roots organization. Trumps desire to remove 11 million undocumented immigrants. That particular issue is that going to hurt donald trump. Everyone seemed to jump on him. Its not possible. You cant grab 11 Million People and throw them out of the country. The last two debates have been substantive. They havent left room for the talking points and the line thats get applause. A lot of the cute lines from last night didnt get as much applause as the substantive discussion on immigration, taxes, spending, and military spending. Thank you, do noty for joining us this morning on the 9. Come up, helping veterans in our own backyard on this veterans day. Were live with the people with the local charities and how you can help. Two people shot on a busy friday in the east bay. Why police do not believe it was a random shooting. You see trading dipping into the red. Not too Much Movement so far today. Today is veterans day. The razu foundation is hosting hashtag day for the brave. The 24hour giving event that encourages donations to help veterans and their families. One of the nonprofits benefits is the sierra club. Thank you for coming in. Thank you for coming in. Sam, i want to start with you on the end. Where did this come from and how do folks at home get involved here . Sure. We love veterans day. We love honoring our veterans and we look at today as a day where we honor our veteran thats have given back to much to us. We want to give back to them. We want to honor them with gifts and the charity thats are helping our veterans all over the country. Folks can get involved at day for the brave. Org where you can find a coalition of 200 plus nonprofits that are supporting veterans in this country and across the world. One is sierra club outdoors. How important is it to have the confidence, the ability to be outdoors, to get outdoors . Its something that a lot of men and women dont have have. Right. I think the outdoors play a crucial role in military and veteran Service Members whether returning from deployment or getting out of the military and trying to integrate back into society. It offers a space for veterans to come together and reignite that sense of camaraderie that i think a lot of veterans miss once they get out of the service. How about veterans families. Right. So our Program Services Service Members, veterans and their families. Got it. We do have family events and some are not so family friendly. Sam, i want to ask you, have veterans come up and thanked you for doing this . You know, this is something that obviously is helping them. Do you get a lot of thanks from these guys and ladies . Sure. We absolutely do. We were combing the internet over the last couple days and there have been comments and shoutouts all over the country, all over the world. People have found the campaigns that the amazing charities are doing. Veterans are seeing this and jumping on board and spreading the word amongst themselves too. The minimum donation is 10. A lot of people say what can my 10 do. You add it up and you can make a real change. We want 1 million. 10 from lots of folks can make that happen. Depending on the charity, it can be an event with the sierra club. It can be a kit for a homeless veteran. And those causes vary from local Community Charities to national reaching charities. But 10 in and of itself goes a long way. Robert, what would you say is the most difficult thing for veterans today when they come home from overseas that they face approximate here in america . I think the most difficult thing they face is justability grating back into society or into society. I think we often say reintegration. But a lot of veterans they leave high school ask they go straight into the military. They have never really integrated into civil society. So i think they get out of the military at 25. Theyre cut loose and left to figure it out on their own. So what would you say needs to be done more for those individuals to integrate bet. There needs to be more programs and services that offer guidance and leadership building, confidence building programs for veterans once they get out of the service. Yep. Sam, what made you think of doing this . Was there an inspiration . Did you notice that veterans werent getting what they needed. This is actually the First Ever National online giving day for veterans. It was a void that we want today fill. Our veterans have given so much. And this was the day to do it. The internet is such a powerful tool. Crowd funding is such a powerful tool to bring people together with amazing stories, little gifts, little donations. And this is this is the movement that can, you know, really make that happen and give back to our veterans in a huge, huge way. All right. Fantastic idea. Sam lundquist with razu. Thank you for coming in. And robert with sierra club outdoors. Thank you, robert. We have the day for the brave under web links at the top of the home page on ktvu. Com. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9. Cameras caught him doing wheelies at 100 miles per hour. The same driver faces charges in a deadly accident. It was motivated by a missing jet last year. Now he is facing felony charges for a high speed crash on the same stretch of freeway. The family of the young man who died in the crash are slowly watching the court proceedings. He sat down with henry le for the First Time Since the crash. Henry says the family isnt sure that the driver has learned his lesson. 24. The red bike. It was this chp video that got everyones attention. Thats corey mcdunna doing wheelies here. He was speeding on 580 in oakland last spring. Another wheelie and he is standing up. Chp officers on the ground nabbed him. He showed little remorse. We asked if he had learned anything. Riding the fog. He also told me that the bike is my [censor] i make it do what i want it to do. Its the last image that they remember of him. Now more than a year later a completely different attitude heading into court on felony charges. Do you have anything to say for yourself. Just three months after the motorcycle stunt, mcdunna crashed his prized corvette while allegedly driving drunk on that same freeway. He flipped and crash. He was injured but his passenger and friend, nicholas was killed. Last month, prosecutors charged him with three felonies, vehicular manslaughter and two counts of dui. Court documents show he had a blood alcohol level of. 12 over the legal limit. He also had marijuana in his system. He is now in jail. He cant make bail. I want him to have a tiny fraction of the pain every day that we have. Reporter but nicholas mother says losing his freedom is little solis after she lost her son. Im trying to forgive but because i have had no contact with him or his family in 15 noes, he has not apologized. Im not in the dark. I dont know if he is remorseful and has learned his lesson. With all of the attention on mcdunna, they dont want nick to be forgotten. Its a harsh reality every day that we wake up. His room is still there. Were not ready to change that part of our life. The pain is still fresh. Nicks room has hardly been touched. The beloved 67 el camino that he was working on still sits in front of the house. What do you think that justice is in this case. No amount of jail or prison time will make a difference. Hopefully he will learn something from it. But his attorney insists he is a changed man. This has been a life changing event for him. This is a tragedy. One of his best friends died when he was driving the car. Very much regrets the incident. He had 100 plus eastbound. The chp says it may have come too late. In this case it wasnt a citation, it was an arrest. Its a sad story. Now their stories and future have been forever changed. You get one day at a time with your family members and the people you love. You get one day at a time. Make sure you use that day. I look back and i hope i did. Henry lee joins us onset. What a tragic story. We do all remember the first time we saw corey mcdunna in that video. He was so unapologetic when we interviewed him. He was flippant. next time ill get a faster bike and ill ride in the fog. He didnt learn his lesson. Do you think the courts will hold him responsible for those tricks on the motorcycle, not just what happened that took nicholas life. Ktvu legal analyst michael cordoned abelieves at the prelim the prosecutors are going to try to get the video in. Its powerful evidence. Nicks family is saying no jail time, no prison time could bring him back. Surely they will be there throughout the proceedings. Did they say how far they want this to go in regards to conviction and jail time. Yeah. Thats not for them to say. They dont noxa specific amount. What they do want is for him to show some remorse and maybe talk to teenagers if he is able to do that and share his story. There has been no conversation between him and the family. Is that a legal thing . Wouldnt an apology be some sort of admission of guilt, no matter how clear the story is . Are there legal things barring him reaching out and saying im sorry. Anything that you say can be used against you. We heard just yesterday that the suspect, the defendant who is in jail, will sit down with an interview with us. He might have changed his tune. The attorney will be there. So he might be limited to what he can say. But he will talk about what he is feeling. What kind of jail time or prison time is he facing . What could he get. For vehicular manslaughter its two or three years. This might be a wobbler. It could be pled down to a misdemeanor. We will see what happens as far as the ultimate justice that he gets. When you sit down with the motorcyclist in that story, we would love to have it here on the 9. Tragic story. Thank you. Coming up, a bloomingdales ad sparking controversy this morning. Why some say this sends the wrong message about date rape and how the company i
