Despite an invitation of a group of campus, Milo Yiannopoulos was prevented from speaking last night. Reporter good morning, a lot of students disappointed by the way things played out last night. School Officials Say its their belief this was a group of outsiders who caused the problems here last night. Were out said the Student Union building here. This was the focus of the demonstration. Windows are smashed out and others boarded up after the protests and everywhere you look, especially here on the plaza, theres damage and clean up going on after an out of control protests here last night. 0 when things started to take an ugly turn, about 6 00 last night. Some in the crowd began setting off fireworks and others set fair to a large portable light stand and generator that had been used to illuminate the plaza. Others were using medal barricades. A demonstration of 1500 people who were voicing opposition to the Milo Yiannopoulos event here that was organized by the College Republicans group. It was a small group of 150 people who caused trouble according to school officials. Officers were forced to fire pepper balls inta the crowd trying to disperse the group. The Uc Berkeley Police chief says they had a lot of extra officers on hand for this event. They anticipated issues and had officers from nine other campuses come in here to help out and when things got out of hand the School Called for help from the Oakland Police department and the Alameda County sheriffs office. The student body president told me hes disheartened by the way the demonstration played out. Its disappointing to see a powerful peaceful demonstration organized by students was coopted by individuals with no relation to the campus, that they would have the audacity to come on the campus home of free speech. We live here, democrats and republicans and anarchists we all live here. Why not make it a better place to live instead of tearing it down . After the violence here, later in the even a group of protestors made their way to Downtown Berkeley where a number of businesses were vandalized and windows smashed out and a starbucks store and the Wells Fargo Bank was damaged. So was a chase branch as well. Back out here to a live picture, still a lot of damage to clean up here. Its being picked up out here now. A lot of paint has been cleaned up on the sidewalks and buildings as well. We see students taking part in the clean up effort. You can tell despite the chaotic scene last night its business as usual. Classes going on as scheduled at uc berkeley. Milo yiannopoulos posted a message criticizing the protestors saying hes disappointed his speech was cancelled. I was evacuated by my security detail and police tonight from uc berkeley. Of course theyre the home of the Free Speech Movement which is ironic and sad this campus appears to be no friend to free speech anymore. When i walked into the event area i noticed security concerns that were not addressed and we probably recommend solving those and next time hopefully they can continue. He had to abruptly leave. His Security Team combrabed him. The fire alarm went off. They were trying to burn us alive or something. The Security Team grabbed him and he was on his way. Anger and upset and high emotion, thats all fine, just breaking windows and setting things on fire is the problem.
