Spectacle. I think that madonna puts on quite a show. If was everything that i wanted it to be. Just like eli manning. Who watches the game. Dont bring me down. Madonna is a fantastic performer. Springsteen. Michael jackson. Michael jackson. Right. Did the stones ever do it. The stones did it. Did they. Madonna i remember that one. We will keep talking about the super bowl as we are just days away. Here in the bay area, if it is raining on sunday afternoon, thats cool. Stay inside and sit on the couch and get your snacks. Rosemary, it is tv watching weather on sunday. Yes. We have soggy weather in store for the weekend. It wont be a complete washout. And i will show you this coming up in the next half hour or so. Lets talk about what is happening for today. Giving you a sweeping view there over san rafael where we are looking at plenty of overcast sky and the showers are still falling. Nothing like what we saw rip through here early this morning. For the rest of your day, just periods of off and on rain. The light stuff with an outside chance of even a thunderstorm. I know steve was talking about that just in the last half hour and all morning long. Here is a look at Storm Tracker 2. Lets take a look where were seeing scattered showers. Over the Santa Cruz Mountains and along highway one 101 between san jose and morgan hill. That stretch is a wet one. Around the central bay, a little bit of scattered shower activity in areas of fremont and 880. Along the east bay shoreline. It looks like right over the bay bridge again san francisco, emryville and oakland, light rain falling. To the east, over the east bay hills. Farther north, we have areas from santa rosa through petaluma, and san rafael. All with just the on and off light stuff. Over the last 24 hours, anywhere from a quarter inch in dublin to an inch and a half reported in santa rosa. Depending where youre at, you have a little bit or quite a bit. We still have snow in the sierra. This is going to continue for the afternoon and evening hours. A look there. Snow level is right about 5,000 feet at this point. There is a winter storm warning still in place here. It goes all the way until tomorrow morning. You can see it expires 4 00 a. M. Saturday. If youre driving up, be very careful. It will be treacherous out there. Meanwhile at home, a cloudy day and soggy. Ill have the futurecast model for you and look at what you can expect for the rest of today and the weekend coming up. Thank you, rosemary. President trump is speak out on social media about the protests across the nation. It appears that uc berkeley against the administration and conservative politics. He tweeted professional thugs and paid protesters are proving the point of the millions of people who voted to make America Great again. In the meantime uc berkeley administrators are defending themselves against criticism that they did not do enough to prevent the demonstration from getting out of hand. Ktvus reporter alex savidge is live in berkeley with the preliminary price tag for the cleanup at the school. Alex. Reporter yeah. Good morning to you guys. Still a lot of debate about the Police Response to the out of control demonstration and a lot of cleanup to do on the campus. You can see that there are windows boarded up at the Student Union building. They were smashed out by protesters. School officials estimate there was 100,000 in damage that was done during wednesday nights protest. This was the scene. A large crowd had gathered to voice opposition to a planned speech by right ringer Milo Yiannopoulos. There was a group of 150 so called protesters that hijacked the protest. The event that was put on by the becky College Republicans was eventually canceled because of the protest. Extra officers from various other uc campuses across the state were called in beforehand. They took a handsoff approach. In the end six people were hurt during the unrest that stretched into the night and across the city of berkeley. But there was just one arrest. Reporter and now there are stories of heroism emerging from the chaotic night. Talked with jake shields a well known mma fighter. He happened to be near the campus on wednesday night getting dinner with his girlfriend. Shields saw a group of about 15 people all Wearing Masks who were hitting a man with sticks in the middle of the street. So he says he stepped in and tried to fight them off. I see some guy running getting chased by a mob of people hitting him with sticks. He was covered in blood. I ran over and started fighting the people off. I hit a few of them. They kind of started standing down. Reporter now, shields says he pulled that victim into a nearby deli and tried to get help from Police Officers who were nearby. But he claims the officers refused to go near the crowd of protesters. Now, we asked for a response from the Berkeley Police department. The officer that we spoke with said he wasnt aware of that particular situation. But he said that in general officers would step in if they witnessed a violent attack. In general, though, police were clearly focused on protecting life over property. In downtown berkeley, quite a few businesses were vandalized including a starbucks and a number of bank thats had their windows shattered. A lot of damage left behind across the silty of berkeley. Cleanup we have been seeing going on the campus here as classes go on. The university and the Berkeley Police department defending overall their response to that demonstration. They say they had extra officers on hand. They were prepared for a protest but not prepared for the outside element that they say hijacked that demonstration on wednesday night. Alex savidge live from berkeley. Thank you. Joining us this morning in studio is the mayor of berkeley. Thanks for coming in. We appreciate. You told us during the report that night you were at city hall. Yes. You were in communication with the chief of police. Yes. Do you think you could have done more to limit the destruction. The decision to deploy the police is the decision of the chief of police. I think our police did an incredible job to minimize harm to people in the crowd. Why do you say incredible job . 100,000 in damage. Fires lit. Atms being broken. I dont see why that was incredible. The destruction of property is completely unacceptable. And but i am i am happy that more people werent hurt. And things could have escalate today a level as we have seen in berkeley and in oakland where more people could have been hurt, more property could have been damaged and its a tough decision that our police have to make. I think they made the right decision to really minimize things really escalating and becoming even more dangerous for people. Mr. Mayor, what can be done about people who come into cities and are Wearing Masks . This has happened in oakland. Yes. This happens here in berkeley. Thats where things change. In the past, you could have people taking pictures of people doing destruction and fine them and charge them. These people were Wearing Masks. Has any thought been given as to okay here they come. You can tell there they are. To isolate them or do something about them . Those are the people wrecking stuff. It is hard to know. I mean, you know, these people literally, you know, take advantage of large protests to come in, insert themselves into large crowds, to commit acts of destruction and violence. And, you know, there is security footage to my understanding. Some of the businesses that were impacted, police will be looking at the footage. If im sitting here watching this, why are they not arrested. That was on the uc berkeley campus. A lot of what happened was on the uc berkeley campus. To begin with and then it moved to the city streets. There was smashing of windows in the citys jurisdiction. Right. But a lot of the activity was actually contained on the uc berkeley campus. I want to remind people that we do not as a city make the decision about inviting the speaker. We did not make the decision to cancel the speaker. This was a decision of the university. We had to respond when the speaker was scheduled. You were against Milo Yiannopoulos coming to the city of berkeley on the campus. I think once the University Made the decision, they want to respect his free speech rights. We have seen what has happened in other communities where he provoked a violence response. I was concerned about that. Can you understand why there are cal students and others online saying why didnt police move in sooner . You said they are there to protect life first and property second. Do you understand the sentiment of why arent they going in there. I can assure you they were there. Are they being told to gosh, so much has been made about Civil Liberties and police brutality. Do you feel that the police are hanging back more than they might have been in the past . I think theroux owe the way that we respond to large protests has changed over the years. I think the concern is not putting a large number of peoples lives at risk. And so its a very difficult call. How do you identify and arrest the people that are causing the damage and the violence while at the same time not risking the lives of it was largely a nonviolent crowd. Five people were assaulted. This is what people find frustrating. There were not that many arrests. There is one arrest from what were hearing. Yeah. We could all see that people were committing, you know, vandalism and violence. Couldnt the Police Department just grab a few of the people or is that too dangerous. My understanding is when there were assaults happening, the police went in and brought people out and did respond to those situations. You know, there still is a lot of discussion happening after the incident to find out what exactly happened. And we will be getting those findings. But what happened on on wednesday, the destruction of property is completely unacceptable. That does not reflect berkeley. Berkeley is not a violent, you know, community. We are a community where people of all perspectives of all beliefs have a right to speak and protest. And just a few mass protesters coming into the community causing destruction does not reflect the community. Do you feel that Milo Yiannopoulos should have had the right to speak based on our constitution . He has a right to speak. He does. What about you personally . Do you agree that do you feel he should have spoken on wednesday night . Were you disappointed i guess you could say. I was very alarmed and upset with the riots. I was very concerned when the university announced he would be speaking. I think in seattle there was a person who was shot at a rally because he had come to speak. I knew that this was i think a lost us were concerned that this may insight a large crowd. And once we i was reading an article. Is it true that you called him a white nationist. Yes. You later apologized. Why the apology. Clearly because i do think he is a white nationist. In fact he is actually then why apologize . Because, you know, i think we probably shouldnt be using labels. But he actually i think announced that he is going to be funding a scholarship for white men and has said a lot of hateful thing about women and about minorities and muslims. I think his speech is hate speech personally. Uhhuh. But he does have a constitutional right to be heard. Its not the views that i believe in. Its not the views that the people of berkeley believe in. As the leader of the city, would you open the doors to him again. No. You would not. I would not. Clearly because the response was violent and was was aggressive. And we need to balance Going Forward i think we need to balance the right of free speech with the need to preserve public safety. Thats a discussion that we will have to have with the university Going Forward. I know you went to cal. Yes. Youre relatively new in your post as mayor. Second month. There you go. Welcome to berkeley. Thank you. We should mention that as well. Thank you for joining us on the 9. Coming up on mornings on 2, just days away from the super bowl. A live report from houston, texas. No. No. All right. Were sounding like old men here. Even though the warriors did not have three of the big men last night, they beat the clippers on the road. No problem. As always steph curry, kevin durant and Klay Thompson picked up the slack. They combined for 76 points including eight threepointers. The warriors have beat the clippers nine straight times. And the warriors are teaming up with the San Jose Sharks again. You will recall the sharks have given away warriors bobble heads including a steph curry bobble head in 2015. Tomorrow night the sharks will take on the coyotes. All fans will take home a sharkswarriors mashup hockey jersey. It has the warriors colors along with the sharks logo on the front. Sal is holding an example. Im a demonstration model. A little higher. This looks good. There you go. Thats your jersey. Go down to sap center and hopefully the sharks will beat the coyotes. Coming up on mornings on 2, a tv classic rushes with a brandnew cast and brandnew plot lines. We will check in with the stars of 24 legacy that premieres right after the super bowl. Supercross roars into oakland this weekend. Up next, we will be talking live with one of the bigtime riders. [music] welcome back, everybody, to the 9 here. We were talking about the super bowl and that kind of prompted the question of the day. Why do you watch the super bowl . Are you into the game itself or are you into the commercials like john reynoldsed. He said commercials. Karen says watch out for deflated footballs. Oh. I see. Cant let it go. No. Jim no, mike. Jim says for the game and the many pools im in. Oh. A financial investment. Lindsey writes as for me the super bowl i hope is a big distracts with how political and dark our beautiful nation is right now. A lot of people said lady gaga. Im all about the halftime show and the commercials and planning a menu with our family. Im about the football. Thank you for answering the question of the day. Sunday will be wet here. It might be okay, rosemary, when it comes to super bowl weather in houston. Houston weather can be tricky. Yes. Yes, yes. We will be watching that for you on weekends on 2. Also watching your bay area local forecast where we are looking at a bit of wet weather. I dont think it will impact the entire weekend. Let me show you what is going on outside right now. We will swoop in and take a look at the south bay where we continue to see scattered showers at this time over the Santa Cruz Mountains and along highway 101 through san jose and morgan hill. Its wet on the roadways there. For the central bay, light rain falling along the peninsula. In and around right there by san mateo, maybe the san mateo bridge. If i shift my eyes farther south, just there on the west side of milpitas. We have over the bay bridge. We have some over the Richmond San Rafael bridge. Scattered showers over novato and san rafael and san francisco. Seeing some of this as l. One shift farther north where we have on and off light periods of rain over areas of santa rosa along petaluma and novato. This is what we will see as we roll through friday. Cloudy skies and periods of light rain. An outside chance that we may see a thunderstorm in the afternoon. Here is a look at the sierra where it just continues to come down here. As we talked about in the last half hour, at the top of the hour, a winter storm warning here. That means for drivers. It goes all the way until the overnight hours. Going to be a rough ride if youre heading up. Here is a look at the futurecast model. First your friday. Here we are into the afternoon. You can see popup showers in the forecast. Here we are into the evening drive. Or maybe you have dinner plans tonight. Expect the light rain to continue. All the way into friday. Even saturday morning. We wake up with scattered showers. The first part of saturday will be a little wet. I think the back end of saturday and into sunday, were going to leave in cloudy skies. Widely scattered showers. Meaning youre going to get out and you will be fine, but dont dont be surprised if a few light showers fall overhead on and off throughout the weekend. By sunday night, that is the next storm moving in. So our weekend will be wrapped up by then. But, again, mostly cloudy skies. Just a little soggy. But not too bad for saturday and sunday afternoon. Here is a look at the numbers right now. 57 in oakland. 56 in novato. Relatively mild out there. For the afternoon today, a lot of 60s expected. Low 60s around the region. Temperatures will be on the cool side for the afternoon. Saturday and sunday. Again, the bigger storm coming in again sunday and into monday. Perhaps on tuesday. Back to you. Rosemary, thank you. If youre watching the super bowl this sunday here on ktvu are you watching for the commercials in what makes a commercial a hit or a miss for viewers . We welcome back consumer psychologist kit. Thanks for joining us, kit. My pleasure. So are the super bowl commercials designed to change my behavior and buy something new or are they trying to make me fall even more in love with a product that i already use . Yeah. Its a little bit of both. Different companies have Different Things that theyre hoping to accomplish. The biggest mistake that advertisers make is they do a terrific job of entertaining us but no connection to the product. The goal is to come one an ad that captures our attention and is entertaining and is memorable but links to the product so the 5 million spent on the has an effect on consumer behavior. What if a commercial bombs and fails and no one likes it how much of a role does it play for the product or whatever theyre promoting there . I mean, does it have an effect . Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Just in the same way that a great ad can especially on the super bowl, which is so watched and people actually really Pay Attention to those ads. A bomb ad can have the exact same effect just in a negative direction. Fortunately a lot of the poor advertisers, i should say fortunately, a lot of the bomb ads arent actually associated with a particular product. People may have hated the ad but they dont remember the product. Is there a formula that you would recommend to an advertiser . You said, you know, make sure that your product is in there. That sounds like one step of a formula. Make sure that your product is part of the ad. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. It is tied to the ad. A lot of times you will get a funny ad or a cool ad, but it doesnt seem like the ad itself has anything to do with the benefits of using the product, number one, make it relatable. Number two these days is a sense of authenticity that the ad feels fresh and original and genuine and not staged. Keeping in mind when people watch super bowl ads theyre usually in groups. Oftentimes theres alcohol being consumed or other things. People are usually in, you know, a little more happy mood than usual. To break through to that, you have to match that tone. And the most effective ways these days tends to be through short dramatic films almost or through humor or through controversy. So those are the ways that advertisers try to break through and capture your attention. We have shown half a dozen super bowl ads. The suspense isnt there anymore. I feel like i have seen so many of the hot ads. Im not so excited about the commercials on sunday. Yeah. And that also showed in that i think that advertisers feel that way too. Theyre wondering about that price tag and wondering whether it still has the same effect there. Are really awesome ads this year, though. Skittles has a total winner. Kentucky Fried Chicken has a good one. Avocados from mexico. Mercedes. I think there will be some, you know, fantastic ad thats are fun for everybody to watch and hits for the companies as well. Anything about budweiser . For some reason i connected with the emotional one about the lost dog. I think it was last year. And the clydesdale. I think it was a 60second spot. I like the more emotional one than the comedic one. That had a lasting effect on me. Im talking about it today. Its so funny because the one two years ago with the with the dog that kept going over to the horses house, that is one of the top ten greatest ads of all time. That is a total winner because of that very thing. It captured emotion. Mixed reviews on last years. Some people thought they were milking the dog thing. This year theyre going with an old one. And then also, you know, try something new. It just remains to be seen. They always seem to hit it out of the park. And, you know, for a company that is struggling to stay relevant, super bowl seems to be really important to their reputation. Kit, thanks for joining us via skype. We will be watching on sunday. Thanks, kit. This weekend supercross is taking over the oakland coliseum. This will be the first time that the cross is in oakland. One of those people tearing around the tracks is cole sealy. Currently standing in third place in the standings. He joins us live in the studio. Third place. Well done. Not bad. Is this the best season youve had . Early season, yes. This is the best that i have set myself up to win a championship. Were trying hard. Hopefully the rain holds up. The track workers do an awesome job even if theres a little rain beforehand. Is it more fun in the mud. No, not for me. Can you tell the different soils from city to city. Yeah. I hate the soil in this city. Yeah. Thats the biggest difference for all of us. Oakland typically has softer soil. We were in phoenix last weekend. It is hard packed. So thats the biggest difference. Obstacles are, you know, different. The tracks are always different. But the biggest difference is always the soil. What would you say is the hardest part of your sport . If you had someone who has never done this, most of us have never done this, what do you think is the hardest part that you do . For a beginner, the handling. Its very physical. To go 20 minutes is very, very physical. And very tiring. Thats probably the hardest part as youre watching the footage. This is me last year. Wow. What about the start . Yeah. I dont know your sport that well. But i watch horse racing. The start is exciting. How critical is the start for you guys. It is huge. To winning the race. It is big. Some people say it is 50 of the race. That is done in five seconds. Thats big. Were all lined up, 22 of us side by side. Its the reaction time and technique thing. So that definitely kind of sets the tone for your race. Other than training on the bike, what kind of training do you do away from the bikes. Innout burger. I n out. Yeah. Special diet. And a lot of weight training and cycling. Most of us are like amateur cyclists. Yeah. Because we have to do it so much. A lot of cardio for sure. How old were you when you first got on the bike. I cant even remember. I think it was three or four. Can you tell me about injuries . Have you been through a couple scrapes. Yeah. Ive been lucky knock on wood. Our sport is were safety is a big thing for us. Especially nowadays. We have a lot of technology in helmets and gear, the boots, the bike. The organization is trying to make it safer. Safety is a big issue for us. They do a good job of watching out for us. Talking about burgers. Do you have to watch your diet or are you allowed to eat whatever you can. Im naturally skinny. I was cruising your twitter feed. Press conferences are for squares. Is that your view. I happen to agree. It is up tight. You cant crack jokes. I wasnt invited to the press conference this year. I was like maybe they will overlook me. How are you feeling. Yeah. Thanks so much. Congratulations. Third place so far in the standings. Have a great run here in oakland. Thank you.
