KTVU The Ten OClock News On KTVU Fox 2 July 8, 2016

Deadly gunfire that erupted just about three hours ago. As the crowd of several hundred people marched from lamar and main street in Downtown Dallas. Dozens of rounds were unleashed. Tonight the Dallas Police chief says four officers are dead. Three more are in critical condition. 11 officers in all were hit. By snipers who were apparently positioned above the crowd. Perhaps in a parking garage structure. In the past 30 Minutes Police announced that one person is in custody after a shootout with police and a second man described as a person of interest has now turned himself in. A person of interest who witnesses at the scene say was involved in this shooting in some way. So this is a person of interest as you can see, in camouflage and they have a rifle strapped, slung with a rifle, but sticking up. And we know that rifles were used to injure and kill dallas officers and adot officer. Again, we have just learned that the person of interest scene here who was apparently among the protesters has now turned himself in. Swat teams are fanned out Downtown Dallas on lockdown as police are going building by building, block by block. One witness was streaming the protest live on facebook when the snipers opened fire. [ sirens ] spot i was walking with other people and then i thought shots were coming from inside of the garage, but they were coming from down the street. I walked in front of the line of fire and then i made it across the street into the parking lot and thats when i saw a downed officer. Now, we are also just learned that the suspect made some kind of bomb threat. And that a Police Bomb Squad has located a suspicious package and is working right now to secure it. We will continue to follow these fastmoving developments on a very chaotic, sad and deadly night there in dallas. Now to breaking news from oakland where protesters have shut down interstate 80 880 in the downtown area, hundreds of protesters marched up the broadway offramp about 8 30 tonight. The freeway has been shut down for about an hour and half and needless to say that is creating a huge backup. Ktvus amber lee went up on the freeway after the crowd of protesters shut it down, she is live there now on 880, amber, what can you tell us about the situation at this moment . Reporter heather, we are, like you said on interstate nate interstate 880 near the offramp. There are a lot of protesters spanning the width of this interstate blocking traffic in both directions. You can see that theres several rows deep, traffic at a standstill. We can see the lights in the distance. We can see protesters on top of big rigs and other vehicles. In fact the big rig to your screen left, was trying to get through, honking horns, people blocked him, so he is stuck there. And we were there overhead as you said earlier, when the protesters first made their way onto this interstate, around 8 30. I should point out that there are other protests going on in the city at Franco Gallo Plaza, at Oakland Police headquarters, and this night of demonstration started around 630 tonight. [ chanting ] reporter more than 1000 people marched tonight on the streets of oakland. Primarily moving back and forth from Franco Gallo Plaza to Oakland Police headquarters. They include college students, activists and families. Hard not to be frustrated. But it hurts. Reporter this man marched with his family, he said its a chance to be positive and part of the fight for change. I have a son, i have a daughter. And they are both going to be okay in the world the same way that i am. Concerned for the future. Took six years since the forward part Police Officer was found guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter for killing oscar grant in oakland. Incident caught on cell phone video. Now grants uncle says its painful to see two other africanamerican men killed by police and again, incidents captured on video. Its really heartbreaking. My condolences go out to the family. I understand the pain they are going through for witnessing this. Reporter there have been important changes since grants killing. More people have become aware of this heinous act by the Police Officers across the country. Thats a good thing because it brings more people into the streets, which gives us an opportunity to really bring systemic change. Reporter protesters gathered at Franco Gallo Plaza to strategize and call for restoring dignity and selfworth to young people of color. I am here today for the next generation, for the generation of kids who will be coming up and they have nothing to live for because look at what weve done. Look at what we shun them they are worth no one sees values in us anymore. Come back here live, looking at the many protesters on interstate 880 right now, most of them are just standing around, some of them a lot of them are on bicycles, skateboards, not doing much of anything except blocking traffic and i need to point out that we have not seen any Law Enforcement up here the entire time weve been here. I do see some red lights a bit further down. Im told theres Law Enforcement turning around traffic, but i did speak to a driver that got out of his car and told me hes very frustrated because he was thinking that Highway Patrol or Oakland Police would be up here. So amber, right now, do police appear to be giving them a lot of space . Reporter absolutely. Weve been up here a while and we have not seen them. In fact when we first started covering the beginning of the protest at Franco Gallo Plaza, there wasnt a Strong Police presence there either which frankly was surprising to us. Amber, what about the drivers who have been cut there . That can be pretty frightening when you are surrounded by a bunch of protesters and you dont know what theyre planning on doing. We did see some of the protesters who have climbed up onto that big rig, but for some of the other drivers who were stuck there, did the protesters engage them at all or did they essentially leave the drivers alone . Reporter you know, we saw them talk to the big rig driver, couldnt hear what was being said. But in the end he couldnt move. He honked his horn, he slowly moved his big rig. At one point, he couldnt get through. Because he would have hit somebody if he did. I have another driver coming up and telling me hes frustrated. He has an elderly mom and he doesnt know what to do. Hes going to go down to city hall tomorrow to complain to city leaders. Amber lee reporting for is live there on 880, where protesters have taken over a section of the freeway. Essentially shutting down traffic in that area. As you heard amber say, some drivers sympathetic to the cause but obviously frustrated. Again right there at the broadway onramp and offramp right by downtown oakland shut in both directions. All of this turmoil comes 24 hours after a Deadly Police shooting in minnesota. I never thought i was going to see her again. Reporter she signaled coworkers to listen in and try and reach her family. Them and ordered her to leave and go to a bank and get money. She frantically wrote notes to the bank teller explaining what was happening but what made it worse she says is the she hurt her daughters voice on the line. Then he goes, you want to believe us . I will let you talk to her for a minute. She goes mommy, mommy, please. Do at this mans has. Reporter meantime Union City Police had been notified and were talking with her other daughter who had located her sister in a neighborhood park. She was sitting on the curb crying. She was scared. Reporter the sister ran away from police and family and hid in a bush. Turns out the man had called the girl first and told her they kidnapped her mother. It appears the men had recorded the girls voice and told her they would kill the mom if the girl didnt cooperate. They also played a recording of her mothers voice to convince her it was real. Police finally united the family in time to stop the money transfer. We hugged and we cried. Im still shaking. Im still shaking. I dont want this for nobody. Reporter police had this advice. Slow it down and they were moving very fast, try and keep you on the line. Repeat what they are saying to you in the meantime you are trying to figure out if you can get a hold of this family, what they are trying to do. Reporter turns out they say three weeks ago, there was another similar call to a mother who was shopping at the Union Landing Shopping Center at a walmart there that also turned out to be a scam and they were able to stop it. They say there have been results of these a scam showing up in fremont and the fbi has posted an alert nationwide to say these scams are proliferating around the country. Back here live we understand as far as those men who called, they were asking for the money to be transferred to mexico, turns out the number they called from was a fake. Jana, this is just frightening. Oftentimes you can tell when something is a scam, but this, it was so intricate. Reporter absolutely, frank. The fact that they were separated, they didnt know how to reach each other and they were being told on the phone these very graphic, very violent threats and there was no way to confirm that. The mother actually had the presence of mind to try and alert her coworkers, alert the bank teller who told police.
