Will grow. Good evening. I am ken wayne. I am heather holmes. Allowing the fire to grow. Broke out yesterday evening at 6 00 p. M. Off highway 29 and exploded this afternoon. Forcing the community of lower lake to evacuate. We have Team Coverage of the fire including how crews have a battle to gain control with hot temperatures on the way. We begin with ktvus Leigh Martinez live on main street and lower lake where the fire burned into the heart of town. What is the latest . Reporter it is devastating. These are peoples businesses, homes, this is their livelihood and this is what is left. Off of lake street. Off of the main street here in downtown. I do not know what the structure once was but this is what is left of it. The fire is still burning but the fire crews left, they muned on to tackle moved on to tackle bigger fires. You can see what is left of a garage that collapsed. We are seeing embers smoldering, hot spots, fire burning. You come out and take a look at main street we have over 100 fire crews out here trying to battle the fire. I lost count of how many trucks are out here on main street. This is a devastating fire that caught a lot of people by surprised. Started yesterday evening. Started burning straight from clayton, came to lower lake. It started was burning till 3 00 a. M. After 3 00 a. M. That is when fire crews said that things started to slow down. But they they could get on top of it. And at that point they had bulldozers out, doing their fire lines, they had crews on the ground, they felt they had a handle on the fire and then by Late Afternoon fire crews said the winds changed on them. The fire ended up jumping over Morgan Valley road and that is when things got out of control. Homeowners thought their homes would be saved, we were told 4 homes were lost. We are seeing several structures have burned. Especially downtown. We met a man who was from another town, he came over to help fire crews, he said he wanted to be on the grounds helping fire crews out and at this point fire crews he said let him. I was critical of the Fire Department after the valley fire. I saw a lot of houses burn down there and so being here today and working with these guys i have a different feeling for the Fire Department and i have got a real heart felt sorrow for all the people losing their houses and their businesses. Nothing that could be done. Reporter back out here live. It is still burning out here. The smoke isnt as heavy but there is still a strong presence of fire driving back up here from lower portion of the lake, we saw the fire was in the hills. Still burning. Downtown, again, just absolutely devastated. We are seeing a lot of structures being burned. We are seeing tons of fire crews out here trying to get a handle on this. We dont know the exact count of how many structures have been lost but from what fire crews told us, witnesses told us, it is hard to get a handle on some of the structures that are burning. They will burn their backs at one fire and it starts up again, they thought they had it controlled, it flairs up again. Very difficult to get a handle on the hot spots. I could see the flames burning behind you. It is dark now. The drops stopped. What are you seeing, though, on the ground, are more firefighters firefighters saturating the area where you are now . Reporter we are seeing a lot of firefighters, flames down, we are seeing a rural area, looks like a field to us. We are trying to stay out of their way. They have a very important job so we are staying in areas where we know we are safe, we are seeing still a large presence of fire crews out here right now. We can see where we are moving and structures that look sound that they are not in danger of collapsing but we see just fire trucks up up and down main street. We have seen fire trucks on the highway. Several locations we are seeing fire crews trying to tackle different fires all over lake county right now. One more question, if i can, you are there on main street downtown, just really quickly, when you look around, how many structures have been loss within the block where you are . Reporter i am almost uncomfortable saying that because i dont know if the people who own these businesses if they know yet and this is how they find out. We have seen at least four on this side of the street on main street. There are other structures that appear to be okay from the outside. We dont know what the smoke damage might be, if the integrity of the structures have been damaged. Fire crews cant tell us at this point. We are just seeing with our eyes at least four or six businesses that look like they are devastated and no longer standing. That is a sad part of this. Leigh martinez reporting there on in lower lake. We will check in with you later on in this newscast to get more information. Thank you. People in lake county living and leaving in fear as the wind blows the fire in different directions. Todd and carry thought they were safe but when the fire changed directions today they put their dogs and their belongings in the car. They tried to stay as long as they could but within minutes their home was surrounded by fire. And a neighbor up the road was on the road when he saw flames coming his way and ended that dual evacuate. Call to evacuate. We have fire coming in to our backyard. We have to go. Now i think we will leave. [ laughter ] they said as difficult as it was waiting to evacuate it was worse driving away not knowing if they will ever see their home again. Joining us to talk more is the sheriff lieutenant working as Public Information officer on the fire scene. We saw live report from the town of lower lake that looks like it is deserted except for emergency crews. 4,000 people have been evacuated. What can you tell us about that . Yeah. We completed a full evacuation of the community once we realized the fire behavior was going to take off on us. A firestorm doesnt talk about what we saw today in lower lake. There are 5 to 6,000 people that have been displaced as a result of the fire this afternoon but there have been changed. The winds changed direction and changed direction and died down quite a bit. This is giving firefighters an opportunity fight the fire. Earlier today it was like trying to catch a fire that was running away from you. Just nearly impossible to do. However i must say the firefighters put on an incredible effort in trying to suppress the fire today. That was something i was going to ask. You described it as a firestorm in the lower lake area. Is the fire i know you mentioned it has slowed down a bit but is the fire focused there in the lower lake area or into other parts now . Well, no, there is still quite a bit of fire. Your reporters can see it down on main street there in lower lake. The fire was like a wave of water today and continued in the easterly direction. At one point we had severe concerns about what impacts we would have if it continued east towards clear lake. Due to the winds dying down this is giving us an opportunity fight the battle right there in the lower lake area. You noticed we have 83, 8600 people who are without power right now. This is as a result of a safety measure more than anything else as your reporter was talking about. There are a number of structures, how many we lost, we cant tell. When this took off this afternoon our primary mission was making sure it was life and property. That was our focus. Tonight and tomorrow we will get a better picture of what took place today. Having worked the fire last year, basically i would say that this fire we witnessed today was similar to what we saw last year when the town faced its own firestorm. The only difference today was the fire took place during the day light versus the night time hours. Still so much smoke and flame it went from day light to darkness in minutes. You understand the Law Enforcement side of this, i respected to ask you about that part of the i wanted to ask you about that part of the investigation. Other sheriffs departments and Police Agencies were sending officers to help patrol the area. What can you tell us about that, especially for residents that had to evacuate . It is too early to tell when we will allow residents return. At some point we will escort people to their homes to try determine what damage, if any, there might have been and collect valuables but yes, the sheriff of lake county took steps in regards to reaching out to other Law Enforcement agencies in the bay area, northern california, to support their efforts. Now as you recall last year as a result of the valley fire it was a number of weeks that Law Enforcement officers from outside of lake county came to provide assistance to the sheriffs office. The officers need to know are becoming exhausted. Officers started their day yesterday and they are just now finding the chance to take a break. A very tiring job. And other Law Enforcement agencies in the bay area, we are all willing to step up and help. Thank you very much for your time and i know that you describe this earlier as devastation, but i guess if there is any good news tonight it is that perhaps the fire is slowing down a bit, is that a good assessment . Well, you know, i will be honest with you, this morning i thought this fire was done and the firefighters had basically almost all but put the fire out but the winds kicked up today and it put us backane situation where we are back in a situation where we are back in the curve. Right now we are seizing every opportunity get a hand on the fire. Thank you very much for your time tonight. You are welcome. Thank you.
