Wilkins survived, her baby girl did not. Today closing arguments in the case. Reporter court is back in reposes and were hoping to hear about a verdict soon. Now lane is facing six felony counts including first degree murder and unlawful termination of a pregnancy. Its been a troubling couple of weeks as evidence has come to light in this case. During closing arguments the prosecution tried to hammer home dynel lanes intent to kill Michelle Wilkins and cut a baby out of her womb. Intent is needed and without it the jury could convict lane of manslaughter instead. Attorneys explained to the jury that lane had been trying for months to prove to her family that she was pregnant and became desperate to do. So they recalled photos of lane hosting a baby shower despite not actually being pregnant and reminding the jury lane had printed out an ultrasound she found online and passed it off on her own. They walked the jury through the attack recalling the precision with which she cut lanes attorney said lane did not plan or prepare this attack. If her intent was that im going to kill this woman to cut her baby out, why wouldnt she have one weapon on her . Any way . Why would she do this in her daughters bedroom using accessible things . Why . Because it was a hasty, impulsive and wreckless act. There never was any intention. Reporter so Michelle Wilkins was also in court today for closing arguments. Were now just waiting for that verdict. Apparently this jury has had a few questions about what was presented throughout the past couple of days in this trial. Its worth noting as you did already that charges are only related to the attack on Michelle Wilkins, no charges related to the death of the baby. Reporter thats right. Considered a person under colorado law, so its only against michelle. Thank you so much, ryan haarer reporting from boulder county. We are waiting to learn more about a man found dead inside a home in unincorporated Arapahoe County today. The home is off east hampden avenue near himalaya street. The standoff started last night and lasted 11 hours. Authorities say before the man died he fired a single shot at a sheriffs deputy. The deputy was not injured. Police originally attempted to contact the man in response to a welfare call. Authorities are still investigating this case. The kids were mauled by a pack of great dannys in El Paso County great danes in El Paso County saturday. A woman brought her boss kids to a small town in rush and heard screams coming from the barn where she found three the advice seems obvious, but a dog training expert said you need to be extra cautious when your pets are around kids. A big factor in triggering aggression is how children approach dogs. What i wouldnt do is come at her straight away and hover over her, right . What youd want to do is come at her either at an angle here or you can actually align so that your body is parallel with the dog. The owner of the Breeding Company rare danes was cited for unlawfully owning a dangerous dog. The humane set to said the danes will most likely be euthanized. The surgical tech accused of stealing fentanyl from Swedish Medical Center prompting a hepatitis and hiv scare here in colorado has prompted alerts in two other states. Today a hospital in california became the third to send out an alert to patients. Rocky allen worked as a surgical tech in seattle, san diego, glendale, arizona and phoenix after getting out of he was fired from swedish and after that nearly 3,000 patients in colorado were alerted that they needed to be tested for hiv, hepatitis b and c. A hospital in phoenix announced that 97 patients may have been exposed there. Today scripps hospital in san diego announced that allens recent incident in denver has prompted them to take similar actions. Mr. Allen had worked here back in 2013 and we believe that the risk to any of our patients is extremely low. A four month long 9wants to know investigation has found that some colorado schools are not fully prepared if a shooter wanted to harm their students or your kids. We learned some schools do not teach students how to react, where to hide or what to do. Theyve not conducted any drills and only started doing some of them this year. Our crime and justice reporter Anastasiya Bolton sent all 178 School Districts in colorado open record requests asking what they are doing when it comes to preparing for an open shooter. I have to say with all thats gone on many parents are probably more than just a little surprised by this. Honestly weve gotten so much feedback, probably more on this particular story than on any other story on 9news i have so when you talk about the fact we asked all 178 districts questions in a letter, we called them and emailed them to follow up and clarify their appearances. We wanted to make sure every school had an opportunity to respond. Some School Districts refused to tell us anything, even declining yes or no answers. Why . Because these Public Institutions paid for by your dollars told us they didnt have to answer our questions. With the help of those who did cooperate we now have a better picture of how prepared colorado schools are for an active shooter. We visited schools across the state and we found theyre training differently in terms of how long they practice, how often and what the drills look like. Jefferson county, for instance, does two lockdown drills for all student every year. The county also does many other drills during the year and has dedicated security personnel. Some smaller School Districts treat the threat very differently. Some admit they have never done a drill of this kind. People like david benke, a teacher who saved students in a colorado shooting, say this training is critical. Love toker that about your backup love to hear about your backup plan, what if it really does happen and youre not trained for it . Because you dont train for your best day. You train for your worst day, all right . And then the second thing is arent we supposed to be preparing the kids for life . Dont these things happen other places other than schools now . The findings of the Colorado Department of education where they oversee everything from food to testing, but other than asking the district to check a box on a questionnaire, no one is actually checking if the schools are doing even the small things theyre required to by law. Tonight on 9news at 9 00 and 10 00 we find out why some schools arent training and see we also worked with experts to make sure that we tell and show you and not compromise things to the techniques that would put students and teachers in danger. So we are only showing what we are supposed to, not to give any tips to any folks. Right. Thats a good path. I know watching your story as i have, a lot of little kids watching this happen with very young people in the room. I mean just watching their faces you can tell theyre very concerned about it, but theyre also soaking it up i think and helping to devise a plan of action. Reporter action. We went to two trainings, an Elementary School and high school in jefferson county. For a high school they have been in this, they have been in the district for a while. This is second nature. They hear lock, lights, out of sight and drop their things and hide. Theres not even a conversation day investigation. The little ones, i got to tell you, they are precious. Theyre cute, right . They go hide and the teacher talks to them and kind of walks through what if a bad guy walks in . What do we have to do . We have to be super, super quiet and super, super still. Thats difficult for someone who is little for 40 minutes. No question. But they still do it. The importantening is were hearing from experiments important thing is were hearing from experts is we have to practice. We look forward to your stories at 9 00 and 10 00. Democrats were in nevada and republicans were in South Carolina and this week its the opposite. The republicans caucus tomorrow in nevada after jeb bush announced he suspended his campaign over the weekend. The focus has now turned to donald trump, ted cruz and marco rubio. Rubio hasnt won a state yet and cruzs core group of evangelicals voted for trump this past weekend in South Carolina. On the democratic side analysts think this will be a moment for hillary clinton. Right now cdot is preparing to once again guide vehicles on i70 through glenwood canyon. A pilot car is guiding the cars one direction at a time in both directions through one lane of that stretch of interstate from today until 9 a. M. Tomorrow. That is because cdot workers say they are still working to make the highway safe that rockslide last week. Rocks and boulders the size of small cars damaged both the eastbound and westbound lanes of i70 and it could be several weeks before its all completely repaired. Once were able to determine that it is safe for travel, then well get out of that 1 lane configuration and anticipate that well have one lane each direction of traffic because there is damage to the roadway that need to be repaired. Thats why its probably going to be at least a couple weeks at the very men before we can open it up to two lane minimum before we can open it up to two lanes each direct. Cdot says there are several more areas for potential rock slides that well show you tonight on 9news at 5 00. Starbucks customers got an e mail about changes to the heres a little piece of good news.
