There are some encouraging signs. This past january china crushed six tons of illegal ivory and hong kong has destroyed 28 tons over the next two years. In kenya has enacted tougher antipoaching laws. But the poaching continues and protecting elephants has become an arms race. Kenya spent tens of millions of dollars a year on 3,000 member Wildlife Ranger force. Hunting poachers in the field and detect ivory. Digital radio signals now connect rapingers with observation posts throughout the country. And gps collars can track family groups of elephants in realtime. Even wildlife underpasses beneath highways allowing elephants to travel safely through historic migration corridors. Just as getting locals invested in wildlife. Many areas dont just lead tours they run the preserve. Tourism profits help communities understand living elephants can be more valuable than dead ones. They are seeing better security seeing money being generated for tourism going to education. These benefits are clean and clear to the communities its working. Changing attitudes takes time and time is not on the elephants side. From a high of 1. Million African Elephants in the late 1970s coaching reduced populations to critical levels in the 1980s. The numbers are plummeting again, there are only about 500,000 elephants left. If poaching continues unchecked African Elephants could be functionally extinct in our lifetime. This is mountain bull. A six ton local legend who has been targeted by poachers for his massive tusks. Today, though, its a kenyan veterinarian armed with a tranquilizer dart who is on the hunt stalking the bull, waiting for an open shot. An extraordinary attempt to save the life of just one animal. He has already had lots of interaction with poachers. In one instance alone hes been shot eight times the slugs are still within his body. But he has survived. Now rangers are doing something dramatic, they are taking off part of his tusk in the hopes that it will make him less of a target. The operation was over quickly and eventually the noble giant wobbled to his feet head ed back to the bush to hopefully live out his days in peace. Sadly it was not to be. Recently the carcass of mountain bull was found near the foot of mount kenya attacked with poise son spears. The remnants of his tusks unceremoniously hacked off by poachers. But what we can do is, you know, basically mitigate that risk as best as we can. And our training is really, really important. Do you feel that somehow with your double and triple checks you kinda beat the odds . I think that we do. Weve been doing this well enough and weve gone past that initial point where your risk factors are much higher. And weve sort of come over the other side now. And so for the pembertons its a life of love trust and risk. And they wouldnt have it any other way. Its just literally to experience life and to live it to its fullest. Its a gift weve been given.
