Much of the city is destroyed. And most of the residents have fled. Some places gunmen are determined to fight to the end. Holly william has been giving us a rare look inside syria and filed this reporters notebook. Reporter we have been covering isis and the rise of its socalled caliphate or Islamic State for three years now. This was our first look inside raqqa, the extremist, self proclaimed capital. We walked into the city, and neighborhood emptied of civilians. Where american backed fighters, known as the Syrian Democratic forces, are clawing background from isis one block at a time. Isis is now surrounded in raqqa. And estimated 2,500 fighters are being pummelled by u. S. Air strikes. But as they did in mosul theyre choosing to wreak more deaths rather than surrendering. When part of our team went forward, they were spotted by in a isis sniper. Our producer, omar abdul kara had to run for cover. Well done. That was close. As americas syrian allies close in on isis from the north, theyre already planning for a future without the extremists. Appointing local councils to govern towns retaken from isis. Just north of raqqa we watched them releasing 81 men and boys accused of being isis fighters. They had been rehabilitated they told us after defecting or being captured. This was a public show of forgiveness in full view of the television cameras. With a handshake and a free cookie, the prisoners were reunited with their families. She told us her 15yearold son, hamri ran off to join isis four months ago. I advise every mother to stop their kids from joining isis. She said. I wasnt sure i would ever see him again. But even now, the Islamic State is rapidly losing territory, nobody here thinks that retaking raqqa will spell the end of isis. At this u. S. Military Logistics Hub in northern syria, they rolled out a dirt airstrip. Building for a long stay. There are officially around 500 u. S. Troops now in syria, though the real number its thought to be much higher. Lieutenant general Steven Townsend is commander of the u. S. Led coalition to fight isis. Troops will start leaving syria when isis is defeated. Isis will turn into insurgency when they lost all their territory . Off the coast of florida, a 300 mile long reef has lost half of its coral in the past ten years. But a group of underwater farmers is working to save the reef and regrow the coral. Manuel went to take a look. Reporter below the water lies a crucial habitat of coral, home to hundreds of species of marine plants and animals. Stephanie shottmeier, a marine biologist is working to save them. Over the past, 30 to 40 years we have seen drastic declines in coral and it has been due to Climate Change. Reporter we set out with shotmeier to see the res key of reef program in action. Scientists certified divers are replanting parts of the reef with the help of citizen scientists. Citizen scientists are members of the local community that are interested in participating and contributing to any type of science program. And in our case, its coral restoration. Reporter you have a waiting list . We have a waiting list. Reporter the first task is to collect recently grown coral from the socalled trees. The group install the just off key biscayne. Once they bring them up, the divers are taught how to secure the harvested coral on to the ocean floor. Pull the zip tie, tight as you can. Then time to find a spt to replant them. And doing that is like underwater gardening. Putting down stakes, and securing the new coral. All while trying not to drift into other replanted coral that is already growing. How many did you get planted . I think about six. This is jessica glens ninth dive. I live here. I am a floridian. I want to save it. Reporter natalie myrtles first. I have been wanting to do this over a year. Finally worked out today. Without ocean is no life. Rescue a reef is not the only program working to replant the reef. Stephanie shotmeier told us a network of scientists and divers who have replanted tens of thousands of corals every year. But there is still a long way to go. Still ahead, a new way to get the flu vaccine with no tears. Put up all the decorations. I thought i got everything. Almost everything you know, 1 in 10 houses could get hit by a septic disaster, and a bill of up to 13,000. But for only 7 a month, ridx is scientifically proven to break down waste, helping you avoid a septic disaster. Ridx. The 1 brand used by septic professionals in their own tanks. Many people avoid getting a flu shot because they hate needles. Researchers in atlanta have developed a vaccine patch that lets you avoid the needle. Dr. Jon lapook has the story. As georgia tech engineer watched his three children get flu shots. He asked himself a question. Why do we need a needle that is an inch long, to cross a barrier that is, incredibly thin. So the thought was lets make very small needles. Lets make micro needles that can cross the barrier. Traditional flu vaccine injections require a needle long enough to reach muscle. But at Emory University they tried something new. Delivering vaccine to just inside the skin. Using a small patch covered with microscopic needles that dissolve within minutes. The patch can be self administered. If you zoom in and look at each of the individual microneedles, the height of each of the needles is equal to about the width of a piece of paper. Their study of 100 volunteers found the patch was safe, causing mild itching and redness at application site and it was as good as traditional flu shot in stimulating an immune response measured by a blood test. The researchers still have to prove the vaccine actually protects people from getting the flu. The next step of course is to, study more people, and, and, make sure that, these initial findings are still correct in a larger population. 29yearold daisy barassa participated in the trial. I really foresee this is something that should be like amazon prime. You could get it at your doorstep. Then do it while you are watching tv. If all goes well, he says he hopes the patch will be commercially available in five years. The vaccine holds up without refrigeration up to a year. A huge plus in the developing world. Dr. Jon lapook, cbs news, new york. Still ahead, yellowstone grizzlies, put to work. Testing bear resistant coolers and garbage bins. If you have ever been camping, you know bears can be a dangerous nuisance. They may not want to eat you, but they do want your food. Well, near yellowstone, grizzlies have become product testers discovering what is bear resistant. Carter evans reports. Reporter this time of years bears are hungry foraging for food. Just about anywhere they can find it. And these particular bears are some of the best in the business. When it comes to getting the goods. Are some better product testers than others . Very much so. Randy gravette knows what a bear wants. We have some fish. It is his job to tempt bears to break into coolers and garbage cans at the nonprofit grizzlies and golf Discovery Center in Yellowstone National park so manufacturers can make them stronger and save bears lives. There is a saying out there, a fed bear is a dead bear. Once they get a taste for it. They will keep coming back. They will. Thats bad news for the bears. Because when they get too close to people. They are either euthanized or relocated. This its spirit. One of the eight resident grizzlies relocated. For 500. Companies can find out if their containers are truly bear resistant to the delight of park visitors like vicky sumner. Kept managing to move that around till he cracked it right open. Now you know which cooler you might bring with you, huh . Yeah, the white one. Reporter she and others watched as 600 pound bear, cora used tried and true cpr method to pop the top on this trash bin. Containers that survive a 60 minute mauling can be sold as bear resistant. But not all are successful. This doesnt look so good. No, no. You can see all the styrofoam. They were able to tear that apart. Even the steel trash locker was no match for the bears. Ripped the hinges right off. When you first started. 10 of the containers were passing the bear test. Now around 65. The manufacturers are getting it figured out. The goal its to benefit the bears in the wild. Saving bears one cooler at a time. Yeah carter evans, cbs news, yellowstone. Pretty tough testers. Thats the overnight news for this monday. For some of you the news continues. For others, check back with us a little later for the morning news and cbs this morning. Announcer this is the cbsover. Welcome to the overnight news. President trump is working the phones over the weekend trying to push the Health Care Bill over the finish line. The president took a break from calling lawmakers to send a provocative tweet in his war with the media. This time the concern is not about something he wrote. The president posted an edited wrestling video instead. Here is paula reid. President trump continued his attacks. Tweeting a video of him wrestling cnn, wwe style. With a hashtag, fraudnewscnn. But im president and theyre not. But last night, at an event honoring veterans, the president was focused on highlighting his accomplishments. I am delivering on trade, on the economy, on the supreme court, on the second amendment, on our military, for our veterans. And on our borders. Where we are doing record, record stoppage. But his promise to repeal and replace obamacare is proving difficult to fulfill. Senate majority leader, Mitch Mcconnell has the not been able to get enough support for the bill. Constituents are giving members an earful back i dont think we are getting anywhere with the bill we have. We are at an impasse. Senator rand paul is within of five republican whose refused to vote for the senate bill in its current form. I want repeal to work. What you do is you separate it into two bills. On face the nation, senator mike lee was asked if republicans cant agree on a replacement option now, how will they be able to agree on one in the future. I think it is easier, sometimes when you lump too maeng thimany things. You doom likely hufd success. Tonight the president will speak on the phone with the leaders of china and japan. Tomorrow he head back to washington, d. C. For the fourth of july holiday. He and his wife will be hosting a picnic for military families and say they plan to watch the fireworks from the white house. Elaine. Paula reid. Thank you. Earlier today we spoke with chief washington correspondent, and moderator of face the nation, john dickerson. A lot of the conversation in washington this week was centered around the president s rhetoric and specifically his tweets. Just this morning he tweeted out a video edited to show him wrestling and punching a cnn logo. I wonder do you think john, there is an actual political consequence as a result of this kind of social media behavior . Well, i think the political consequence is it rallies his supporters and that he is basically from the inauguration, onward been quite consistent with his Campaign Message basically he is going to run a presidencien a different way than, than we have seen from other president s which is basically to stick with the affections of those who supported him, keep those affections tight roiled up, no better way than to do that than in competition with the media. Because a lot of his supporters see the competition not based on whatever the merits of the moment may be, but a fight between somebody who is their champion, fighting for the things they want and press corps trying to get in his way. Back on health care, we know majority leader, Mitch Mcconnell was forced to delay the Health Care Vote because of republican holdouts. How might this play out when Congress Returns . There is more tinkering on what mcconnell has been trying to put together essentially buying off different factions. They are all things the socalled sort of moderates want. The more you give to moderates mort you lose conservatives and vice versa. This has been the bedevilment of Health Care Reform for republicans in the house and senate. Then there its the just repeal only plan, which, which, is unlikely to get very much traction. And then there its the mike lee and ted cruz plan which senator lee outlined on the
