This week an investigation found Cleveland Police routinely use Excessive Force against civilians. Now the controversy to a story in Rolling Stone magazine. The explosive article described a gang rape at the university of virginia and caused an uproar. This morning the story is falling apart. The magazine is apologizing, saying its trust in the main accuser was, quote, misplaced and it regrets the decision not to contact the alleged attackers to get their side of the story. Mark albert is live on campus in charlottesville, virginia. Mark, good morning. Reporter good morning. The allegations rocked this campus leading to a suspension of greek life a Police Investigation and soul searching from the university president. Now there are even more questions. The Rolling Stone article shined a harsh spotlight on the issue of Sexual Assault at the university of virginia. It told the story of a woman named jackie who said she was gang raped by seven men at a fraternity party. After several days of cracks in the story, large parts of it collapsed on friday. The fraternity issued a statement saying it had no party on the date reported. It had no members who fit the attackers description. In a statement on its website, the magazines managing editor admitted the reporter never contacted the alleged attackers for comment. And said it now regrets that decision. Quote, there now appear discrepancies in jackies account, the statement reads, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced. We are taking this seriously and apologize to anyone who was affected by the story. Shortly after the original story, uva president Teresa Sullivan asked Charlottesville Police to investigate and suspended all fraternity and sa roar sororities. I do believe there is a culture but i dont think its unique touchlt v achlt uva. And the Washington Post is reporting that jackie stands by her story. Last night the president of uva says the campus has a new focus on rape Sexual Assault on campus and that these new developments quote, must not alter this focus. Mark albert in charlottesville, virginia thank you. Lets get more on this story. David is a correspondent no National Public radio and has covered this extensively. He joins us this morning. Good morning david. Good morning. We heard a reporter say she is standing by the story but you had a chance to speak to the reporter before Rolling Stone issued the retraction. What did she say. Her name is sabrina erdely. The questions posed to her were really about her approach and methods and particularly about her decision not to approach the men, even under a pseudonym, that jackie accused of having been the ring leader of this gang rape. The reporter was trying to do a larger look at campus rape at the university of virginia. And didnt jackie say i dont want you to contact the man responsible . Wasnt that part of the reasoning behind the reporter . Erdely said that jackie was under great distress and they were very worried about her emotional state and they decided victims are so often blamed and so often mistrusted they wanted to take the extra step. What they failed to do is take the extra step on behalf of the readers and the facts. Facts of not good or bad to a story, facts are facts. You present what you know and you present what you dont know and they failed to do that. Rolling stone hasnt said specifically why theyre backing away from the story and why they have questions about it now. Obviously jackies story was only one of a number in this story, but it was by far the most prominent. Has the entire story been discredited now . Its very tough for this story to be the vehicle for asailing the university of virginias approach to Sexual Assault and rape. It is only about one of a dozen campuses thats under severe federal review of how it hands such matters and yet this story was not only the emotional core it was presented almost in a narrative form as if it were proven facts. On the record accounts of rape by women who graduate from the university of virginia were carefully attributed and the difference in tone meant that people who read that story came away wanting to run to the barricades. You touch upon that and i read the article again last night. When you read it she is the mouthpiece for a broader conversation. What happens to that conversation now . Because that fraternity was suspended. The University Said well take a hard look at what were doing when these assault allegations pop up. But what happens to the National Dialogue now that this has been proven potentially false. There are two questions. One is what happens at uva and the second is the National Dialogue. At the university of virginia this will blunt some of the criticism and at the same time the university of virginia appears to have real issues to confront. I retweeted a gentleman last night whos a law professor at uva, very active trying to raise consciousness about campus rape. At the same time he says ive been nervous about and had misgivings about this story from the beginning because of jackies account, but we must regroup and come back. They feel once they got the attention that they want to keep it there. Its a big story and certainly a big one to have to recant a portion of. Turning now to the economy, a pretty positive jobs report. The u. S. Labor Department Says employers added an impressive 321,000 jobs in november keeping the nationwide Unemployment Rate at 5. 8 . In fact this year is on course to be the best for job creation since 1999. For a closer look at the numbers and what they mean we turn to cbs News Business analyst jill schlesinger. Good morning. Good morning. Thats a pretty impressive number. Is it as good as it looks . Its very good and i love the job creation number. The rates good. There are some negatives inside of the report. Last month we know that wages did increase month over month, but still from a year ago, wages are only up 2. 1 . Thats just a little bit ahead of the pace of inflation. Thats why so Many Americans are saying its hard to keep up. You also had 6. 9 million americans who are working parttime because they cannot get fulltime work. Although the numbers have come down, we still have 2. 8 million americans who have been out of work for more than six months. So really good progress. Were not there yet. But where are we seeing the growth . This is some very good news. In the last few months growth has been spread out and really good across lots of different industries. We saw business and professional services growing by 86,000. Retailers adding 50,000. Health care workers almost 29,000. Food services we dont love those jobs theyre lowpaying jobs, but construction, 20,000 jobs. Those are usually very wellpaying jobs. Weve been talking about months, if not years, about when the economy would reach a Tipping Point in terms of job growth. Weve seen almost Everything Else improve except this. Are we finally at that do you think . I think were getting there. Its been a slow start. The First Quarter terrible weather nationwide, the economy contracted. Second and Third Quarter much better. Were coming into a part of the Recovery Period that looked closer to the longterm growth rate of 3. 3 . Again, its not there yet, but we are coming into this time where i think 2015 could be the year. We looked at the numbers yesterday. I mean royesterday was record highs. Is that what you anticipated after seeing the report . The headline came out and stock futures sold off actually. The reason is a lot of investors are concerned that the strength in the economy could prompt the Federal Reserve to actually perhaps raise Interest Rates sooner rather than later. I should also point out the rally was good yesterday, limited by oil. Oil dropped down again yesterday. We are down 30 , 35 from the summertime. Oil Companies Make up a big part of the stock market and that could limit gains before the end of the year. Back to the whole issue that you just raised, which is the question of wages which have been flat since before the recession if not down. When are wages going to start to come back . Thats the magic question. Economists that i speak to are telling me that it looks like next year there are some forces right now, some data inside of manufacturing and nonmanufacturing industries where a lot of companies are saying we will start to pay more next year. By the way, another possible limitation to stock market gains. If companies have to pay more to their employees, great for us but not so go
