Even if you have smoke alarms, even if you have an escape plan some firefighters say do one more thing before you turn off the light. In a house fire its not the flames but the smoke that kills. One breath is all it will take and it will kill you. How long would you say people have to to get out of their home in situation. Seconds. But there is a way to buy time. This house is being set on fire on purpose to prove a point. To survive an overnight fire sleep with your door closed. The fire starts in the living room. Nearby on the same floor are two bedrooms. Down the hall is the kids bedroom. Their door will stay open. On the other side is the master bedroom. That door will be closed. We watch along with deputy chief eric fleming of philadelphia fire. One minute into this fire smoke is gathering on the living room ceiling. It starts to trickle into the kids bedroom. Two minutes, thick black smoke is choking out the air in the living room and the kids bedroom with that open door. Now take look at the master bedroom. You can see the orange glow of the fire at the bott top of the door but so far no smoke. Smoke goes up to the ceiling and back down. If you have a door closed it cannot easily get through that door. At three minutes the entire living room is in flames. The air is black and fire is going down the hallway. Dough brie begins to fall from the ceiling and smoke consumes the kids room. But in that mastery bedroom even with that fire raging outside the door, theres barely a sign of smoke here. When you close the door, how much extra time would you say that gives you . You going to have at least, you know, five to sick minutes to actually initiate your escape plan. Okay, guys. At this point firefighters put out the blaze. Walking through the aftermath, you can see the difference. In the kids room, the ceiling is black from smoke. The temperatures that the sealing in this room would have been over a thousand degrees. But the master bedroom it looks almost untouch. The hal low core door which most reasonable houses have will hold fire and smoke out for between six and 20 minutes. Fire officials know not everyone one will sleep with a closed door. Im sure that theres a lot of kids who would rather the door be opened and maybe some parents, too. Thats when its even more important to have smoke detect detectors right by your bedroom even inside. Whatever you do, dont count on the smell of smoke to wake you up. A lot of times since most fires occur at night, a lot of people never wake up. The fire officials we talk to said have at least one Smoke Detector per floor and check those batteries twice a year. Also, look for a second exit in every bedroom maybe window. And practice your escape plan with your family so youre ready for the worst.
