In an Eyewitness News tv exclusive our walt hunter talk with the fire fighter who survived what was called the worst high rise fire in American History prior to 9 11. Reporter inside burning one meridian building, 28 floors above the street, as they searched for three missing Fire Fighters, suddenly then lieutenant mike yeager and his eight man rescue team found they too were trapped. We could not find our way out of that. We had no air lift. We had no idea what we were going to do. Reporter fortunately yeager and his crew were found flown to safety to the roof by a helicopter but final radio calls from the the three lost Fire Fighters found dead hours later on the 28th floor, never for gotten, by the heroes who tried so hard to save them. President captain had us out of there, we need help. Then there was nothing. Reporter yeager says lack of sprinklers, failed, power and the water supply system, made it impossible to contain the flames which gutted eight full floors. Everything was against us, and there was no, elevators, there was in lights, there was no pumps. Hour in time delay before they get a water source. It will be effective on the fire. Reporter thomas says over the past 25 years major improvements in high rise safety, most importantly sprinklers. They are mandatory in high rise buildings. Reporter now close Cooperation Among Fire Fighters, city officials and building owners to sure Fire Safety Systems meet new tougher standard. We hope never to have a tragedy of this level or this event ever again. Reporter however yeager says on that terrible night 25 years ago, one thing didnt fail, the courage of Fire Fighters, who risked their lives, over and over again, trying to save the three heroes who perished. I saw more heroics acts on that fire, pure human you cannot believe a guy could keep going the way they were going.
