MSNBC Alex Witt Reports July 7, 2024

Msnbc here in los angeles. New reaction today from the January 6th Committee after it subpoenaed for President Donald Trump both through documents and testimony. The vice chair told nbc news today that they will not let trump make a spectacle out of it. We are going to proceed in terms of the questioning of the former president under oath. It might take multiple days and it will be done with a level of rigor and discipline and seriousness that it deserves. We are not going to allow the former president hes not go to turn this into a circus. Earlier today how Speaker Nancy Pelosi had sharp words when asked if she thinks trump will cooperate with the committee. I dont think he is man enough to show up. I dont think his lawyers will want him to show up because he has to testify under oath. I dont think he will show up. I dont think hes man enough. We will see. We will see. First, Breaking News. A new nbc news poll just out today is giving us a look at where voters stand just 16 days until the midterms. Interest in this election is at an alltime high. 70 is higher than in 2018, which had the highest midterm turnout at that point in 100 years. When it comes to party, there appears to be a slight enthusiasm gap. 70 of republicans have a high interest in the midterms compared with 69 of democrats. Overall, the battle for congressional controls neck and neck. 47 prefer a democraticcontrolled congress. 46 republican. Earlier today on The Sunday Show both sides sent their messages to voters. We have a Democratic Congress right now which rubber stamps everything joe biden does. He wants more spending which resulted in inflation. The other side is working on their own power. They have a ploy to win back power. We have a plan to fix your problems. When voters have spoken, we have done well. Joining me now is hayes brown, Msnbc Daily Writer and editor. We have Michael Starr hopkins, president of Northern Star strategies and Senior Adviser to florida nominee charlie crist. We have susan del percio, republican strategist and msnbc Political Analyst and former Rubble Candelabrum florida david jolly. Hes also an msnbc Political Analyst. I said it was big. Lets get into this. Hayes, you first. As we showed, msnbcs new poll found 76 of all registered voters are highly interested in the upcoming election. Its either out a nine or a ten on a tenpoint scale. 57 of registered voters say this years midterms are more important as compared to past once. More than 5 Million People have already cast ballots in person or by mail with turnout surging so far in states like georgia and florida. To the signs suggest turnout on november 8th will be strong . If so, will it be good for democrats . On the first part, yes. Turnout will be strong on november 8th, it looks like. Based on everything we are seeing, people are going to turn out and go to the polls. This showed whether or not people believe this midterm is more important than others. Its really interesting when you consider the num of things that go into play. You have midterms in the middle of the democratic term when all three were congress and the white house that are controlled bydemocrats. You have where donald trump has been pushing his lies throughout this time. You have the chance to republicans could take back control. Theres a lot riding on the midterm both politically and in terms of policy. I think voters understand that. I think that is really coming through to them. Whether that will translate well for democrats, though, i really hesitate to say at this point. The numbers are so close. Given that we cant break it down fully by district, looking at gerrymandering and all these xfactors which will weigh into whether the number you showed, 46 to 47 , in terms of which party people want to control congress, there are so many things that the the wind can shift in so many ways between now and when the voter finished. Its hard to say which side will come out on top. Listen, the reason they say all politics are local. According to this poll, 47 of registered voters say they prefer democrats to control congress, 46 want a republican congress. When it comes to enthusiasm, the polls look at this number. 78 of republicans have a High Percentage of interest versus 60 69 of democrats. Here is one of the democrats [inaudible] oh, goodness. A little bit of a problem. Did it freeze . Okay. We have jim crow governors like ron desantis who are intentionally trying to divide African Americans of their right to vote. At the same time, we have donald trump using those same tactics to scare southern whites into voting against their own self interest. Its dangerous. It is why there is such an enthusiasm gap. When you use racism and antisemitism to stir up your base, that is something that democrats cant really and should not do. Of course not. This poll, susan, found that threat to democracy are the number one issue of voters for the Third Straight nbc news poll. Does that surprise you that it has stayed consistently above the economy . Could that be a disadvantage for republicans . It doesnt surprise me that it ranks so highly when you look at the messaging coming out, especially from the democrats. Lets not forget that when you take together jobs, the economy, and cost of living, your 35 , which says that the number one issue is really the economy. There may be different lenses, but people still see it as inflation or the price of gas or what they are making is just not covering the bills. That doesnt surprise me as much. One thing i would like to focus on in this poll is that they talk about persuadable voters breaking a republican. With the margins as tight as they are, it looks like that is what is starting to make the difference for things looking up for certain republicans. Not all of them, but there are some where this is going to make a big difference. Persuadable voters there. David, let me ask you about when it comes to independents and the control of congress. The poll finds that they are split at 46 for democrats and republicans. How critical is that independent vote going to be . Take you have any sense of an edge either way . The persuadable voters would that be baked in within the independents . A little bit. Frankly, in any election, there are people who can be persuadable. I think the big takeaway here susan is right. That will be a big demographic. Which way do they break . I think what the poll is affirming is what we have seen in the last few months, which is that this is settling into a Frankly Hyperpartisan Environment where voters ultimately are going to make a decision based on whether they think we are going in the right direction or the wrong direction. The Anti Biden Sentiment is currently a despite the good efforts of the president. For the democratic message, it says, look, if we go the republican stretch, youre going to lose your fundamental rights. If the issues are playing to a tie above voters, whether thats right or wrong, i think, are we going in the right direction or wrong direction . History would suggest its good for House Republicans and republicans at large. I would say this is not a good poll for Senate Republicans because of the Senate Republicans are burdened by four or five really bad candidates in states they have to win. We are not seeing the big pop for republicans into this poll. This might be good news for House Republicans today as a snapshot. I dont think its good for Senate Republicans and mitch mcconnell. Moving forward with that category, we have 71 of voters who say the country is heading in the wrong direction. Compare that with 20 who say its on the right track. What do you make of that . Whats at stake if republicans win both houses in the midterms . I actually have a problem with the premise of the question. I have for a while. I dont like the right direction, wrong track question. It makes it hard to see what voters are actually concerned about and why they think the countries on the wrong track. If you look at that, you assume that they are saying that we wish we had republicans in power instead of the democrats. You have to consider how many of those people in that statistic are democrats who are who want biden to be doing more, who Want Congress passing more liberal legislation. What is it about how republicans wish when there are so many different policies which could fit into what better looks like in the eyes of the voters. I just think that question is so vague that i wish that pollsters would stop asking it, to be completely honest with you. I get that. You want it to be more granular. I understand. On another granular point, michael, 81 of democrats think the republican partys agenda poses a threat which if not stopped will destroy america as we know it. That is a remarkable margin. What do you think is at stake if republicans win . The future of our democracy is at stake. We have donald trump in 2020. His allies are attempting to overthrow the government. There was a violent insurrection. Donald trump and his allies have once again said that they will attempt to make sure that they win at all costs and others is a dry run for 2024. What democrats really need to focus on is that republicans are not running on issues. They are running on lies. Democrats are talking about how if republicans come to power, theyre going to slash medicare. Theyre going to slash medicaid. Theyre going to privatized otoole security. Peoples lives are literally going to be worse. Well. Susan, when that same question was posed to republican voters, you had 79 say that the democratic partys agenda poses a threat that if not stopped will destroy america as we know it. As you see, both parties feel the same way about the other. Is there anything that could be a middle ground these days . Not these days. I think those days are sadly behind us at least for a few more election cycles to come. I think joe biden is trying to move us towards that direction because he has gotten bipartisan support on quite a few issues, whether its the chips or infrastructure. There are things that republicans and democrats agree on. Once we get into the election cycle, that is not permitted. You have to be hammering away. What adds to the rhetoric michael, weve gone back and forth a lot. I agree that there is an issue with democracy. It falls with the secretary of state. If republicans take over the house and even the senate, i dont think that is good for the country its. Not the end of democracy. Joe biden can veto things. He can show them the way. There is no way that that is going to actually happen in the first two years. 2024 might be a different story. Nothing will get done if republicans are elected. Its like you were reading my mind during the commercial break. I think it would predict gridlock for two years. Last question to you, david, about the polling here. Biden says about two thirds of reliable voters say that they would still support their partys political candidate even if that person had a moral failing which was not consistent with their own values. What does that tell you about the current Political Climate . Are we not holding our political leaders up to standards which we can all aspire to . Is that gone . That is gone. It seems our culture might be as well. What you will see in the closing two weeks here is the parties recognizing that. There is a theory called negative partisanship. Basically, the other side is worse than us. Whatever you think right, now the other side is dangerous and worse than us. Negative partisanship has been incredibly effective in the basketball of decades. In races as close as this as these key races become national questions on democrats or republicans, for negative partisanship to prevail in these last two weeks, its effective, unfortunately. Hayes and michael and susan and david, this was a great shot and a great conversation. Thank you so much for breaking down the numbers. We appreciate it. The new nbc news poll is also revealing how the country feels about president joe bidens job performance. 45 approve. Lets go to nbcs Josh Lederman who was once again following the welcome. What else in your mind stands out in terms of what it reveals from this poll . Well, alex will President Bidens Approval Rating is consistent former President Trump and former president obama were at the same point in the presidency. If they drill down on some of the specific groups which are so important to democrats in this election and the next election. President biden does even more poorly. If you look specifically at the swing state voters, independent voters as well as suburban women, his Approval Rating is down to 37 among independents who are so coveted in these elections. That is raising further questions for not only what they are about to face in these midterm elections, but also about President Biden s prospects in the 2024 election if he does run again. The brazilian has been saying that it is his intention to run again, although he has not been formally committed to taking that step. At this point, there have been these drumbeats of questions from republicans about whether he is still up to the job, given that he is getting older. Some of the questions they have raised about his mental state here is how biden in his interview with Jonathan Capehart addressed that question about his age. You dont need to be concerned about anyones age i think the best way to make the judgment is to watch me. And i slowing up . Do i not have the same pace . Everyone talks about the same [inaudible] i could get deceased tomorrow. President biden told Jonathan Capehart that he is still physically and mentally healthy and he encourage people to take a look at whether they see him as hes going about conducting the job as president , whether he still has the passion for the work hes doing. We have voters think that he does, great. If not, they can vote for someone else. Thats how President Biden is framing that choice if it does come to that in 2024, alex. Okay. Josh lederman, thank you. What a new bill from House Republicans proposes is drawing outrage. Some believe it offers a bleak preview of things to come if the gop prevails at the ballot box. Thats next. Prevails at the ballot box. Thats next. New details from the january Six Committee, today and how long it will go toe to toe with donald trump. Vice chair liz cheney says they will not let trump make a circus of his testimony if he complies with their new subpoena. Lets go to nbcs Allie Raffa On Capitol Hill for us. Liz cheney had a lot to tell trump todd. What happens next . Alex, liz cheney is among several Committee Members who have said they are considering all of their options, if and when the former president decides whether he will or wont comply with the subpoena. The Committee Voted Unanimously to issue trumps legal team, saying they are still reviewing it. But noticeably trump hasnt said what he plans to, do not in that 14page response to the committees about to issue. It nor his first public appearance since it was issued at this rally in texas last night. But there have been reports that trump would consider testifying if the committee would agree for him to do it live and in public. That is a possibility that Committee Vice chair congresswoman liz cheney poured cold water on on Meet The Press this, morning saying that if this testimony did happen, it would, quote, take a couple. Days and would be done with a level of, or disciplined seriousness it deserves. Adding that the committee will not allow trump to, quote, during this into a circus. However, if trump doesnt comply with the subpoena, they say a Contempt Of Congress referral to the Justice Department, similar to what we saw with former trump advisor steve bannon, is not the committees only option to be able to hold trump accountable. Listen to what she had to tell trump todd this morning. We have been very clear about a number of different criminal offenses that are likely to be issued here. If they Department Of Justice determines that they have the evidence that we believe is they are and they make a decision not to prosecute, i think that really calls into question whether not we are a nation of laws. Theyve got a lot of issues that they are dealing with. That may be criminal when it comes to the former president. Alex, whether the committee decides to use the remaining time until january to issue these criminal referrals to the Justice Department is still unclear. Several Committee Members have told us that would require another unanimous vote and they have admitted that it is technically not necessary. That the Justice Department is working independently on its own investigation to reach, im assuming, the same conclusion, alex. Aly rafael capitol hill, once again thanks for. Much joining me next is barbara lee member of the appropriation and budgeting house committees. Look at the calendar. On our about november 14th, donald trump is compelled to give testimony to the house select january Six Com
