Where it will take me. Waking up every day in different country, creatin projects, never really looking back, just being in the action action, action, action maybe that is why i hav always been documenting It T Keep A Trace of it the excuse of the art is the greatest pass ever i am actually kind of shy an can be afraid to talk to people, but when i do a project, i hav to explain, i have come here b myself, with my own money, t try to do this project her with you, in your community, i it makes sense to you. Then, of course, some people ask, yeah but what will this achieve . I always say, i dont know lets see. Its almost like if we do pack of the unknown, ok we wil do this, but i have no ide where it will take us. [noise] thank you can you show your i. D. [noise] here i am, a super ma prison, to meet some inmates that have been incarcerate when they were teenagers mainly because of the thre strike law this is for maximum security and so a lot of the most violent, damn, well, someone got stabbed. That was when that was two days ago hello, hello. Hey, how are you, i am jr. Hey, how are you i come from france i try to remember every name guys, but give me a minute how are you . Well, thank you for having me. What we are about to do here i to take photos of you guys and also photos of people that mad it out, and also families that have forgiven or people with families that are connecte here to try to connect all the dots to show how everyone is interlinked together we are not here to judge anything we are here to listen to the story and to portray you the way you want to be portrayed my feeling, just from bein from the outside, that is why really need to hear it from you, is that this is how i feel here, between walls, almost like everyone is trapped within the same hall. I want to make that as a visua so that when people see it they understand it i would love to hear from you, what you think, if you have an questions for me, or how can i help make things clearer any question, basically, i a open what is it that you are trying to accomplish with this that is my question . The thing is, i dont eve know that someone can be locke up for life from a kid in my country, i never heard that maybe in the u. S. People know, but people tend to forget. But not seeing each other, you tend to forget, everybody does their own thing, and then yo get forgotten. But when you see it, put a fac and story to someone, then you are like, wow, i cannot forget it anymore look, i dont make big promises im not a politician i am most very careful with my words, but i will give a example. It is interesting when you wor on walls, people are alway coming to me, oh, we should do this wall. When there is a wall, i keep hearing, okay, lets take th camera, Me And My Friend drove there. How you guys doing . Good, how are you we are just checking out th wall you check out the wall . We want to see it what wall [laughs] the fence, the fence, sorry yeah, thats been there a long time. Were you guys from . We are french i mean he is american, We Ar French You mean pull up . Yeah. Hi, hows it going . Good, how are you where are you guys headed we are just gonna tak pictures of the wall the wall . Oh, the fence okay, go ahead. Thanks. I want to find a place wher i could do an Installation Tha could play with the wall but not touch the wall i found a place where we can drive in front of the wall but on the u. S. Side, border patro everywhere, helicopters flying okay, this is not look like an easy place i look from The Other Side, an i see some houses close by the wall, actually not that far. So i go past the border, and then i go to the closest house from the wall because i am like, maybe i can paste something on the house. There was this woman, two ol people, a little baby, littl chickens and a dog, they wer like, oh, i follow you o social media i was like, thats insane, the first door i bang, that really weird you know me, i do this kind of stuff, so she takes me to that spot that is closest from th fence. But there are trees and stuff, okay, i see it is a bi complicated to do it there so look, thank you, let me continue driving alongside the wall i kept on going all the way to the ocean. I am like, crap, that kid, h doesnt know what a fence is he does not know that there ar two countries, two sides, he does not know the wall means i went back, and all i did was photographed him standing in his crib, looking around lik that and then i left. We look around down a little hill that goes up to the wall, there is nothing, just grass and garbage here and there i am like, okay, whose land is this so i ask every neighbor, excus me, sir, you know whos land i that i dont know, already doing it, thats all i need to hear. I go to the next neighbor, you know whos land this is . Some people are not even ope the door so what do you do . My only option was, lets rent a bulldozer. Anyone can rent a bulldozer, they deliver to any address. I started digging ground i said, all right, one of th risk of me as a french Perso Digging Ground next to the border in mexico im not digging a hole, just flattening it. Mexicans come first, they say, hey man, you cant do that, ar you crazy . I say, i am so sorry then we spent one day, two days, three days, for like 15 days no one says anything we level the ground. I could not believe it i was like, what the , who i in charge here then i go to a place to rent scaffolding. If you pay, we will build it we dont ask questions [speaking spanish [speaking spanish [laughs] [speaking spanish it is bigger than the wall, it is three times the size o the wall lets see if the Border Patrol stop us. I come with my team and we paste that little kid. There, i was like, maybe tha will be where i lose everythin because Border Patrol is gonna start saying, there is Something Big being built by the wall, we should do something about it [speaking spanish in one day, we pasted the entire structure i was like, okay, lets get ou of here. I passed back on The Other Side, i passed by the two Border Patrol looking at the kid. I just put on the internet, said, hey, whoever wants to go see that kid, heres the location that is all i said one of the great things ar does there is if you build a giant kid somewhere, they will say, that is a fun thing, will see it, lets take selfie in front of it. That is where my idea stopped, i hope people go and tak photos and see the wall, it the same land, just on the different side what happened is something i have not planned People Exchange their phones through the wall to take photo of each other, connecting, talking, saying, hey, how ar you . Border partol could be sayin they could be passing drugs, they could be passing weapons. After three weeks, no one go arrested how the heck do people not get arrested for Passing Stuff through the wall brent people love subaru just because it stands for much more than just a car. We decided to go and t organize a table that would go through the wall we built a table, 36 feet on each side. Yes, we will block the road little bit on the u. S. Side the table will end up on the road a few days later, we got a letter from the border patro saying that they strongl recommend keeping the table on the mexican side only. We continued, but we had t improvise another way of bringing the table on the u. S. Side we invited people to come for the last time. People on the mexican side all started sitting and we started making food, but there was nobody on The Other Side because we couldnt build table. Hello, how are you . Yeah, from germany wow, amazing cant go to The Other Side. As soon as people come take photos, if you could stay little bit longer. After an hour, an hour and a half, maybe 20, 30 people an we passed them and they would only have a couple of minutes, so lets go fast from the mexican side, it continues to the u. S. Side one music band taking tw sides. Now, im thinking, were gonna get it in five minutes lets pretend were eating lets take a photo everybody, gather around, were Gonna Take A Photo [speaking Foreign Language you . Ready single, what throw, chri [speaking Foreign Language we thought this would las two minutes. That we will put the top and take a photo, and thats it, w have to take everything off in five minutes 15, 20, 30, one hour, wer still eating if there was nice music. For a moment, we forgot ther was a war. This is the eye of a woman whos a dreamer. A dreamer is somebody who came to the in the states, when she was very little, with he parents but illegally. Her name is mayra. I told her not to come, becaus theres a big chance we will get arrested not only she came, she cam with her mother. We have very few months left, being able to be this brave an come to the border its only an hour and a hal later that a Border Patrol came everybody got scared i told them, send him over t me i was on the safe side, i wa in mexico anyway i was not even trying to justify myself i said, look, he said, i know. Turns out they were watching u the whole time, but had decide to let it happen thank you. Can you share tea with me . Thank you chinese tea at the Mexica Border [laughs] he went and talked with mayra. When she came that morning never thought should be talkin with an officer. He told her that he also has family on The Other Side they were talking. That made me realize, that art can go places. Beyond borders maybe because art is not par of any organization, its no part of the state. Its something that we own, We The People own thats why i go so far that little kid says, hey, im here i exist im not terrorist. A future, a Better Future [speaking Foreign Language look down, in front of you. Perfect. I like when you hold it there. Nice you certainly as a kid don think youre gonna do this life in prison, doing th things that youve done. You know, theres a lot of fences and walls in here t keep us in, but it does more than that. It destroys who we are, it destroys families. You were Graffiti Artis before, and i started in the lifestyle. Its hard to imagine there i violence on the job every day. How many guys are still bein stabbed here 11 years worth. I was raised here. I never imagined that one day, you get out, and do somethin you the you never believe. The more we think like that, the more were able to obtain that dream people want to be this great from way up there, you know mean we can see it. We want to be that big from wa up there and it doesnt take much just a little hope, a little effort and some paper. [laughs] thats cool pizza time so, im back in here oh my god, look at the shadows lets go this way. With kevin has it going . Good, you i put the portrait i ttok o you on social media, and peopl were like, i think people were touched by your photo becaus of the depth in your eyes an what you share conflicted because of your tattoo on her cheek. I understand that the symbols eyewear represent hate to many people, so peopl automatically have a conflic with that. When we come in here, we are forced to fight for our live against other races. Please a collective Group O Individuals coming together fo one purpose. Saying we got mexicans working with blacks and whites its rare in the Prison System before us to break that mold its big it just shows everybody is willing to put the hate an negativity behind us and wor together a common goal, you know i mean oh, its like a little plane this is the first time that weve ever seen a drone live like this. You see yeah congrats, everybody [applause] yo, yo, yo, what you doing . Im trying to keep my eye [laughs] i want to leave it there. I wanted to stay as im tearing it, it felt good it was freeing the process is what matters. I think thats what art is its a process it wasnt just drawing a picture, or singing the song its a process of us being together, doing something. It was beautiful thats all i learn from your art. The process is what matters it took me years to realiz that theyre just realizing it in a heartbeat. It stayed with me because that reassured me i was skipping the right par of that journey. Boom people always think graffiti just started, but look at this those are old graffiti, from 1980, 1846, 1923 theres tons of people who wan to exist and express, and be seen and be remembered i relate to that growing up in the project outside of paris, i was only doing graffiti writing my name wherever i can on the rooftops. Its not that i had to escap by the window. My parents were sleeping on th couch in the neighboring room. As a child of immigrants, come from a family that neve had a voice. I feel like im living no one else would care one day, i was at a trai station in paris, waiting fo my friend and he was late. At some point, i see a bag tha was there. After two, three trains, the bag was still there. So i opened it, and i see this camera i took it. I had that idea of i shoul document those adventures. I was documenting everything i was documenting climbing the roofs, i was documenting those night experiences. I loved it i would just make photocopie of it and give it to people photograph then i was like, i have Th Photocopies in hand, i could just paste one
