Everyone will be talking about. The key is with him. Want to my interview with the director of the jinx. All in starts right now. Good evening from new york im chris hayes and we have huge Economic News today. A blockbuster jobs report. The strongest run of good Economic News in over a decade. The Labor Department announced american employers added 257,000 jobs in january and the estimates for november and december revised significantly by a combined 147,000 bringing the number of jobs created in 2014 to 3. 1 million. That is the strongest since 1999. That is why were seeing exstatic headlines about todays report. Its raining jobs. Best jobs report in many years. And while the unemployment ticked up it happened mainly because people who gave up looking for work decided to enter the labor force and give it a shot. What does it mean for president obamas record on job creation and his legacy as president on economic recovery. Lets look at job totals in the fifth and six years of presidency. He is approaching clinton territory which is a big deal. He took an arguably pretty well deserved victory lap. All told in the past 59 months the private sector added about 11. 8 that is almost 12 million new jobs. That is the longest streak of private sector job growth in our history. Throughout Barack Obamas presidency, our economy has slowly but surely recovered from the financial crisis. There is refrain on the right about the quality and kind of jobs being created. It is a parttime economy. The truth about this economy is it is essentially a parttime economy. A parttime working economy rather than having good jobs. This is underscoring a parttime economy. This chart from 5 38 disproves that. They have been overwhelmingly fulltime jobs. While there is concern that working age consults looking for work remains low, as you see here the rate of employment among primeage workers is rising steadily. Probably the biggest problem with the recovery is how uneven it has been with the majority in fact by some measures all of the economic gains going to the wealthiest americans and middle class remains stagnant or declining. They are still below where they should be, but the trend continued through january with the best weigh growth in sixth years. A talk with former labor secretary for his take on todays jobs report. I would like to think that something really good is happening, krisz. Were in the upturn of an economic cycle, i cant say it is about the structural changes but were creating more jobs over over the past year. And the other thing i think about that is key to recognize here is there is a strong case to be made that this could have been happening in 2010 and 2011 had you not had this turn towards austerity broughtly brought on by a Tea Party Congress and the white house seething to their demands. As long as the obsession was deficit reduction, it was very hard to create new jobs. The other thing that is notable here is that republicans were saying for weres before the Affordable Care act was implenty implemented is that it would be a jobs killer and now it is implemented and we have seen even atmosphere jobs. Every attack on the obama economy, predictions about jobs being killed predictions about Regulatory Burden strangling Domestic Energy production if you had this record if mitt romney had this record right now, if he ran and won, can you imagine the victory laps they would be doing about what the mitt romney turn around of the economy. I dont even want to imagine it, but the fact of the matter is that had mitt romney been elected, there would have been austerity, more reductions more of a burden on the middle class, and at the same time probably no Affordable Care act. You probably would not get this much job creation but having said all of that let me and i dont want to rain on the parade, let me say that the jobs being created are not all that great. In fact, the jobs being created tend to pay less than the jobs we lost in the great recession. We are though and lets just talk about this. We had a recovery that was not helping average people. We saw stagnating wages. Were starting to see an upper lift in pages. Can you get to a place like what we had in the late 90s where the economic boom is really doing quite a bit at the bottom of the wage scale. That is a big question, can we get back to the late 1990s, and that was the only time when inequality started to decline because people were in such a demand people to fill the jobs were so scarce that employers started to pay more. Are we going to get there . It is possible but there are a lot of head winds that are going to slow the economy down. For example, the dollar is very high relative to other Car Insurance currencies. Gas prices are good but that is likely to be temporary. When things pick up again, gas prices are likely to go up. So we dont really know how solid this recovery is. This is a big question that will define american politics and a huge part of the obama legacy, do you continue to see this kind of growth . Can america be an island of robust growth amidst catastrophe and crisis around the world . That is a big open question. Even in the clinton administration, the best economy we have seen the longterm structural problems of widening inequality a slow down of middle class growth and wages, that was a business phenomenon not a structural phenomenon. People at the top have too much power, and until that stops, we will always have problems. Right off the bat, they opposed a stimulus plan. They blame him for the slow economic recovery. They have been attacking him remarkably from the left over inequality and wage stagnation. In detroit, likely 2016 candidate jeb bush sounded a pop populist tone. There was apparently only three acceptable responses to the news, number one, spin it. No mention of what it actually says about the rise in the Labor Force Participation right. Next senator dan coates says has president obama visits indiana today, unemployment is unacceptably high at 31. 5 . He reflects that 31. 5 is the share of the unemployed, not of the workforce that are longterm unemployed. Jone joining me now is josh barro. It is strieging toking the relative emphasis between Foreign Affairs and the economy as the economy has gotten better. Does it . It was a talking point that served them well because it was true. As it has improved what is left to say about it . Great job . Things look zood. Good. A lot of it is driven by gas prices. And where we are in the business cycle. I think the victory lap is oversold for that region. When youre coming out of a recession, youre supposed to have really big job growth. If you look at coming out of the 1982 recession, we were creating 400,000 jobs a month. Youre supposed to be able to have fast growth. It is great that were getting it now. It would have been better five years ago, so yes, enjoy this but bragging too much about it is a little much. I also think there is a kind of asymmetry in politics sometimes is that if it is bad, its the president s fault, and if it is good in both cases if is not attributable to the president , you get it on the downside, you might as well take it on the upside. Legacies are written by where president happened to be in the business cycle. Yeah i would take as much credit at possible for gas prices. Bill clinton really road it. We came out with really good growth. Driven in large part of as asset bubble that started to burst. So people have wonderful memories, and george bush gets a lot of blame for that even though it was his fault that was bubble was blown before he was elected president. And there are repredictive claims. Those are theoretical predictions, made by politicians, ascids ideological attacks on the president. The affects on the labor market were always very small. Pushing people into parttime work, there is a real phenomenon there. It causes employers to prefer parttime employees. The likely effect was on the order of one in every 1500 workers. Even if that effect is going on right now and i think it is small, it did k be swamped by other things like falling gas prices and makes the obama care effect look like a tiny bit of noise in the system. You see this a lot of times. The republicans now, one talking point is the end of extending Unemployment Benefits has driven the job growth of 2014. There is an economic working paper out there that is getting a fair amount of play on the right. Unemployment benefits have real incentives incentives. But now theyre swamped by other stuff happening. Why, why, are the crusades suddenly in the news . Put your best face forward. A face in need deserves puffs indeed. And try puffs softpack today. Theyre coming. What do i do . You need to catch the 4 10 huh . The Equipment Tracking system will get you to the loading dock. There should be a truck leaving now. I got it. Now jump off the bridge. Kayla muler, a humanitarian aide worker from arizona was taken hostage by isis in 2013 near alepo. She is believed to be the last american hostage help captive by the group. Today isis claimed she was killed in raqqa, buried in the rubble of a building hit by an air strike. But, as nbc news reporting, there was no u. S. Or jordanian combat missions near that city. The raids took place 140 miles away. U. S. Special forces attempted to rescue captives in july but they had been moved. The other hostages held with her were all beheaded. She has never been shown in front of a camera and her family has asked news organizations to not identify her by name. Mueller is and was, or is by all accounts a remarkable human being committed to helping victims of civil war as she posted in this video. Im in solidarity with the syrian people. I reject the brutality and killing that the syrian authorities are committing against the syrian people. She was a friend to the syrian people. She put her life on the line to aide them. Tonight muellers family and the rest of the world await news of her fate. [ female announcer ] we help make secure financial tomorrows a reality for over 19 million people. There is an annual event in washington dating back to 1953 calls the National Prayer breakfast collected by the ministry. Including this year the dal dalilama. Overall, the speech was a call for the faithful to be humble before god and reject the certainty of violent extremism. There was one passage that sent the conservative outrage machine into overdrive. People committed terrible deeds in the name of christ. In our home country, slavery and jim crowe all too often was justified in the name of christ. In response that that passage, Rick Santorum and bobby jindal released statements. And jim gilmore called the president s remarks the most offensive i have ever heard of a president in my lifetime. The president , 48 hours after we saw that jordanian man burned alive, thought it was important to remind the world about the evils that christians committed 1,000 years ago. Yeah it is inexplicable to me. He wanted to bring christianity into the fight. Who launched crusades . The Catholic Church. He is saying the Catholic Church was the al qaeda of its day. He is saying al qaeda is bad, but christians were just as bad a couple centuries ago. It seems like he is making excuses saying we started it. In fact the president was not doing any of that, calling christianity evil or defending isis which he called a brutal death cult. He said that religion has been used with beliefs in it is not a sin if you kill nonchristians nonchristians, nonbeliever es in our faith. He made a deal that if you go fight in the holy land you will be forgiven all your past sins. Now you would not know this if you just listened to the soundbyte on fox news. Here is what he said immediately after, the next sentence after that passage. Michelle and i rusheturned from india, a magnificent beautiful country, but all types of faith have been targeted by other peoples of faiths simply due to their heritage and beliefs. Joining me now is athena butler. I dont think i want to litigate the wisdom of the crusades i am seeing contraryian hot takes today about how great the crusades were. But the general principal that during the crusades and inquisition, people did horrible thick things in the name of their faith, that is 100 true correct . Yes, it is just history. It is mind boggling to me that people saying these things would make an f in any university classroom. You know the crusades get started because christians wanted to take back the holyland, everybody is fighting each other. Or the inquisition you do terrible things to people because you want them to say things about the catholic face or taking over the americas christians have done lots of terrible things in the name of religion. And you dont have to go back to the crusades. In the war in bosnia people did horrible things because they were on the wrong side of a religious divide. In northern ireland, people murdered each other very recently. This is not an uncommon thing, religiously motivated violence. No it is not, and i think it is disingenuous. It is lame for them to claim this is the worst thing that a president has ever said. It is a true thing, it is just history. But when you are as invested in rewriting christian history, you run into people with horrible ideas that are changing what happened in lots of religious traditions. You cant privilege christianity over islam. They all have violence in them and it happens because people believe in a deity or they have other means. And there is a thing about having to name them that the specialness and distinctness the point to me seemed to be that throughout history, different religions at different times have different propensities that are played to. And i think one of the things that people are missing here, is if you play into isis hands, its basically what they want you to do. They want you to declare a holy war. They want you to come after them. It will make them martyrs, and then this thing continues. I really think the rhetoric needs to be ratcheted down a bit. Thank you very much. In my opinion, the only problem with Guantanamo Bay is there are too many empty beds and cells there right now. We should be sending more terrorists there to keep this country safe. As far as im concerned, every last one of them can rot in hell. Until they do that they can roth in Guantanamo Bay. A senator laid out his case against closing Guantanamo Bay yesterday. How many were there in 2001 . Zero. How many were there in october 2000 . Zero. How about 1998 when they bombed our embassies. It was not built then. 1983 when hezbollah bombed our embassy in lebanon. The answer is zero. Correct. Isz lambic terrorists dont need an excuse to attack the united states. They attack us for who we are. It is not a security decision. It is a political decision based on a promise that the president made on his campaign. To say it is based on propaganda value is a pretext to justify a decision. He is a pretty smart guy. Well credentialed. His arguments seemed to lack fundamental logic. Saying that guantanamo should be brought down because its existence is creating terrorists. Second, his contention there are too many empty beds in guantanamo right now, of the 122 inmates still there, 54 have been cleared for release but are still stuck in prison. These are, among them people who have likely not done anything wrong. People cotton says we should keep locked away too spare us the risk that they might turn against us in the future. It is offensive at its roots to our constitution and our founders very conception of liberty. Finally, his final point that when it comes to terrorists every last one of them can rot in hell, a lot of them have tried to get out of guantanamo baby killing themselves so they can rot somewhere else. One attorney said his client is subjected to solitary confinement, feeding through a tube in his nose for his climate, guantanamo is hell. Behold the biscuit.
