One of the things thats notable about john mccains statement is its lengthy talking about his own familys military service saying he is not morally superior to donald trump. Trying to laying the Playing Field but at the same time is unwavering of what trump has said. And that is there should be no defamation of those who served the country. There should be respect in a sacred honor to those who served. I just received a statement from South Carolina governor who said as a member of a military family and governor of a proud military state that has been recognized as the most patriotic, theres a lot of military in South Carolina, my heart and thanks to the khan family for their enormous sacrifice for our country. As far as im concerned, they have the standing to say whatever they want in the political process and should not face criticism for it. So that points to the notion the khan parents being private citizens, and not public figures. Even though participated in the National Convention and spoke critically of donald trump that what they gave in terms of the loss of their sons life allows them to speak freely and what they have to say has a kind of power and merit that they should not be criticized for it. I think its probably too early to talk about that right now. I think we have we have been covering this campaign for almost a year now. This campaign and what we have seen again and again from donald trump are moments like this. Flash points like this where we all sit and talk and wonder will this be the point that republicans come out against him. We saw this a couple months ago. So i dont know you can say if this is going to be an impetus for republicans or people in leadership to withdraw their support. Privately in the conversations i have had with leaders and aids and strategists it is giving people pause, but the overwhelming thought seems to be we have seen this movie before. This has happened repeatedly back to last summer when he questioned john mccains status as war hero. All of them to a tee saying this is a a media narrative and not a real issue for donald trump. We are talking to foiks who said he wishes donald trump didnt say what he said, but there are bigger problems that trump is prepared to handle. In my situation, i happen to be of pakistani descent and a muslim marine. So this hits home in a different way that perhaps maybe some other veterans may not feel the same as i do. So when it comes to that, and i know about the organization that you have, do you think when it comes to being an American Service member we should have those descripters as we talk about our military whether they are a female Service Member or latino Service Member. Should it happen to be latino or Service Member bho happens to be muslim. Shouldnt it be about our American Service first and isnt that what most folks in the military take avow to . Mark halperin joins me right now. So which donald trump are folks supposed to believe . The one that sat down with me in 2013 or the one with george steover the weekend. He never described what the terms of the relationships was. So now hes trying to walk it back and say what the definition of relationship is. For any other politician, you could maybe understand that kind of bluster, but this is part of a pattern on an issue with putin where he likes to, at times, suggest an admiration with putin. This was a a period of time in 2013. We had Edward Snowden and the asylum issue. There was ukraine going on, syria in the news, Vladimir Putin had just been named the most powerful person in the world by forbes beating president obama. We know they were trying to get Vladimir Putin to attend the Miss Universe event that was never going to happen, but there were efforts to have that happen. When does hyperbole for a candidate go ftoo far . I think its already a problem. You combine that with whats going on with the khans. One of the main ways the democrats are trying to frame trump is this notion that hes not ready for prime time. Hes not steady enough to be commanderinchief and conduct american diplomacy. And youre not going to find too many even republicans who want to stand in his corner and say im pro putin and antikhan. So the language that he used to take on the primary challengers now crooked hillary. Does he worry that language is going to come back to tar him in a way that will diminish his standing. Im looking at these new polls after the Democratic Convention, 45 of adults say they were more likely to back clinton meanwhile 36 of adults are more likely to support trump out of the gops event. So as we countdown 99 days to go, is any of that language going to catch up to him or are those trump voters, they are locked in. Republicans, those in office are locked in. We know what the Clinton Campaign thinks their coalition is to get a majority in enough states. We know that demographic groups are going for. Its not clear to me what trump thinks hes doing to get a majority because hes behind now. S that a winnable race, but hes behind. Im not sure his use of language expands the number of voters interested in him. It certainly energizes the people in the republican nomination and a larger group than that. But does that get him to a majority, im not certain it does. Particularly when hes having all these other problems of whether hes up o to being commanderinchief. For republicans, whats the longterm game after november if donald trump doesnt win . How do they say that we stand for something and didnt unite behind someone who is an exaggerator or bigot. The party is going to have an identity reality check and maybe a crisis come november. But remember, the Republican Party right now is a Majority Party in congress. A lot of state legislators. Party is not in crisis except at the president ial level. If donald trump wins, some have argued the party is going to have more of a crisis than if he loses. Mark halperin, thank you. One side and they tend to hold a traditional view of marriage. Puts them at odds with some of the democratic, progressive voices. Were thinking about people who attend church who have lived here 20 years undocumented but they have had families here, run businesses here, not been in trouble with the law. So youre saying theres a chance Hillary Clinton could win over some parishioners. I dont think because her views are so progressive and liber liberal. But i think what happens is people may stay home. And that bothers me. That means Hillary Clinton wins colorado. We dont have the option not to vote. We have to vote our conviction. I dont think voters make decisions based on what operatives do, but its another bad headline for trump showing more disunity in the party. This suv just imagine how strong this water was rushing downhill and down the river. On top of the car, thats what authorities do to mark that they have checked the car for any humans. Two fatalities, both from folks trapped in cars. I have covered a lot of tornadoes. This reminds me of tornado aftermath. Just look at the trees being plowed down. Debris everywhere. It was a lot of water. The senator from maryland referred to as a wall of water. This looks like part of a car coming down the river. What they are trying to do is get all this e debris cleaned up so it doesnt end up down river past the dam. You dont often see this flash flood, but when storms dump that much water, it came down the hillsides on saturday. Cleanup is going to take awhile.
