Bowers is facing 29 federal counts including 11 counts of cruising a firearm to commit murder. After the judge asked if he understood the charges against him, bowers answered in a clear voice, yes, sir. Last hour Sarah Huckabee sanders announced the president and first lady will travel to pittsburgh to express support for the community. She went onto defend the president and his tone ahead of the midterms. Is he incapable of in words, toning it down and toning down the rhetoric . I think the president has had a number of moments of bringing the country together. Once again, ill remind you that the very first thing the president did was condemn the attacker. And the very first thing the media did was blame the president. More to that later. Lets start with the latest in the investigation. Joining me from pittsburgh is ron mott. Robert bowers appeared in court today. What do we know . Reporter it was a quick Court Appearance, ali. We had a lot of anticipation at the start of the day that he would not appear. He had several gunshot wounds. We believe we saw the caravan come in an hour before the scheduled part start of the initial appearance. We believe we may have seen the caravan leave after the appearance. He was handcuffed. The judge asked him to identify himself, and then asked if he understood the charges against him, and that was pretty much it. He was briefly had his handcuffs he leased so he could sign paperwork, confer with his Court Appointed attorney, and then left the courthouse and due back here on thursday. Having talked to people here since saturday afternoon, they want this focus, obviously, from the country on these 11 people, and their families. 11 people lost their lives on saturday morning. And to remember the 6 people who are still recovering tonight who were injured in that shootout, but there is going to be two words that are echoed here in pittsburgh and surrounding areas for a long, long time. Thats robert bowers. We spent the weekend outside of his apartment complex trying to get to know more about him, and he lived in this apartment complex for two years. We spoke to the neighbors who live right next door, and she says for two years he would say hello, wave every now and again, but he did not engage at all. Much more than that, and so she felt in any ways they didnt know who this person was living next to them for two years and essentially was a stranger who is alleged to have carried out a horrific attack on saturday at the tree of life synagogue. All day long people have questioned whats going on here . We point to the courthouse. They understand. But they clearly want the focus on the victims and their families. That is where well keep the focus. Ron, thank you in pittsburgh. Rod rosenstein pledged Law Enforcements commitment to prevent hate crimes announcing new initiatives following this massacre. During a Law Enforcement round table rosenstein revealed this startling statistic on the number of hate crimes reported to federal officials. According to the latest fbi uniform crime reports, 88 of agencies that report hate crime data to the fbi reported zero hate crimes in 2016. We are reviewing the accuracy of the reports. Simply not reporting hate crimes doesnt mean theyre not happening. We need your help. According to the Antidefamation League there were almost 2 2000 incidents motivated by antijewish bias last year. Thats a 57 increase from the year before. With with me now is Jennifer Reuben an msnbc contributor. Jennifer, theres so much to deal with here. More than half the hate crimes in america are anti semitic hate crimes. Both anti semitic hate crimes and total hate crimes have been on the rise since 2014. But there was an exchange with Sarah Huckabee sanders and Hallie Jackson where sayre are was saying the president condemned these things as soon as they happened. Why does the media carry on about this stuff . The issue of leadership, and im not necessarily just talking about donald trump. The issue of leadership around hate, hate crimes, and discourse that is uncivil in this country is not about condemning a crime. We can be on the right side of condemning a crime. Its the stuff that contributes to it. Right. Listen, no one despite what she is saying is saying that he instructed this killer to go do his crime. To one is saying that he wanted this to happen. The issue is whether his verbiage and his that of his followers which he refuses to condemn plays a part in motivating people to do things. You would have to be blind to history to think that words dont mean anything when theyre spoken to a leader. Now, does it mean this person wasnt deranged or unstable or not rational . Of course. It changes peoples voting patterns. It changes peoples beliefs, and for some percentage of the population, they do horrible things. The notion that we shouldnt condemn Public Officials for saying things which contribute not only to crime but to animosity and hatred and bigotry, its a unique position. Listen, do we think that George Wallace who is the governor of alabama in jim crow south committed the violence at a black church that killed four little girls . No, but he was a staunch segregationist who spoke in language of hate and White Supremacy. Those people have a moral responsibility for whats going on. The other thing i mention as an aside is that the petulance, the smallness of the president. They said something mean about me, so i get to say what i want. Weve never had a president who sounded like a twoyearold, frankly. Were in week two of what might be called a national tragedy. Right . No one died last week from the pipe bombings, but that was a terrorist attack. Now people actually did die because of a hate crime. In normal times both of these things separately would be things that leadership, Political Leadership and the president would be called upon. Now, again, it shouldnt be hard to condemn anti semitism. But in your column you write about all the parts of leadership in this country, including media and politicians who need to do Something Different to change the discourse that were having. Right. Listen, you have a competitor on cable news who airs the same conspiracy theories. Who invokes the name of a jewish billionaire at the drop of a hat. Something that somehow in the killers mind made the connection between jews and a caravan which is 1,000 miles away and decreasing in size. There are people in social media who have a much greater responsibility to take down anti semitic, racist images and speech from their platforms. Certainly they had the capability of doing that and yet, theyre terribly unresponsive and slow. Where is paul ryan, for example, denouncing and kicking out of the party someone like steve king who met recently with a neo nazi in austria touting that kind of White Supremacy language . Where were those people . No one says those people committed a crime, but theyre shirking their responsibilities as Public Officials. Its about time they started stepping up to the plate and doing their job. Youve written this very well. I recommend everybody read your columns from yesterday and today. Thank you very much. Shes an opinion writer at the washington post. While we struggle to make sense of why the hatefilled acts of violence took place in our country, we dont want to lose sight of those who were hurt. Dr. Jerry ra bun wits. Rose mallinger. She was described as a fixture of the congregation. Someone described her as roya y royalty. David and cecil rosenthal. They missed a saturday service. They both were there. Richard gottfried, friends repped h remembered him as a genuine nice guy. He had just celebrated his 38th wedding anniversary. Joyce feinberg, a mother of two sons. Native of toronto, a researcher at the university of pittsburgh. She was described as caring, generous, and a thoughtful human being. Melvin wax was 88. The first to arrive and the last to leave. He was leading the services when the shooting began. Those who knew him said there was always a smile on his face. Daniel stein spending his retirement traveling with his life. He made even the toughest tasks enjoyable. He was killed in the same room where his grandsons bris was held earlier this year. Ir vi irving younger. A former tree of life president said i wouldnt be surprise first down he saw the gunmen walk into the room and his first thought was can i help this stranger get settled . And finally ber niece and sylvan simon. They died in the same place they were married 60 years ago. They married in 1956 at the tree of life sin dog. She wore an ivory gown. A neighbor recalls them as a sweet, kind couple who were always holding hands. Joining me is shani whose friends was shot in the attack. Thank you for joining us. Give me your thoughts. Thank you. My thoughts . Honestly, im a bit numb and confused. A bit angry. Extremely sad. I heard you talking about all the victims, and i think if i wanted to say anything because j jewish scroll hill is a tight community. I think im not especially or unique in any way, but i represent what is very typical of a jewish Squirrel Hill kid in that i have some connection to at least half of the victims, not that i was really super close with any of them. Its actually a very close friend who is the cousin of the individual that was shot, and thank god survived. But her mother was Rose Mallinger that passed. She was also a holocaust survivor. I work with her son at the Jewish Community center. Cecil and his brother were at the jc every day. They always had a smile and they were like a greeter of the community. And at synagogue during services, he was is shusher. He made sure everyone was quiet when they needed to be. This is such a sweet guy, and a good soul. Danny stein, his son and daughter i grew up. I played basketball with joe since i was a kid. And i think you can talk to anybody and ask about that family, and they were just the nicest people. Joe and lee are two of the nicest people youll ever meet. So im very typical of a Squirrel Hill kid that grew up born and raised in this area that knows everybody. And Everybody Knows you. Its not uncommon to just take a walk, and for even a socially introverted kind of person, stop to say hi or be said hi to. Thats what i heard. It was normalcy. What do you make of the idea that you know live in a community that was targeted by somebody because of your faith . I mean, its disgusting. It fills me with anger. At the same time im quickly jarred out of that emotion, and i think about my children. I have two boys, 12 and 9, and i think about what i need to do as a father to be certain that not only are they aware of the fact that theyre jewish and have pride in it but also aware of what that means and how others might think of them for no other reason, but also aware that this is Squirrel Hill and we cant let it change, and we have to have their Squirrel Hill experience growing up here be the same that it was for me. My wife and i were living in michigan at the time that we found out we were pregnant with our first child, and we didnt even talk about it. We set the motions in place to come back to pittsburgh because it was unspoken. We knew for sure we were going to raise our kids here, and we got back here just a few months before my son was born, and they know nothing else. And theyve expressed some thoughts and concerns. Weve had some serious conversations with them, and were going to do everything we can to accomplish both things to make sure they understand that having pride in being jewish is important. Being aware of the threats is important. But continuing to walk up a street and going to the Jewish Community center and playing basketball and walking to colfax and saying hi to everybody. Absolutely. They cant change. We will support you in keeping Squirrel Hill the same place that it was. Thank you for that commitment. Thank you. Our hearts are with you. Thank you. Last hour the man suspected of sending multiple bombs in the mail last week was in the florida courtroom. Cesar sayoc made his Court Appearance hours before there was a possible 15th bomb found in atlanta addressed to cnn. It was intercepted at a mail facility. At this point investigators admit they dont know how many more bombs might show up. Theyre warning people say they sayoc may have done research on and possibly targeted. Kerry sanders is outside the courtroom where sayoc appeared. Good afternoon. Is sayoc cooperating . Reporter he is not cooperating. His attorney said hes invoked his right to silence. Hes said nothing to them. Now, at the hearing it was more or less a profungt ri gathering to say theyre going to have another hearing to discuss detention on friday. They didnt even get around to the idea of extradition back to new york where he faces the five charges including sending explosives through the mail and threatening former president s. While he was in court today, he sat in a row all alone with his hands handcuffed in front of him wearing an orange jump suit. His hair pulled back into a ponytail. When he came up, he didnt say much to the imagine gramagistra. Once it was over, it was curious, because it could have been not that the judge has necessarily a way to force the suspect here, but it was curious that he didnt ask him with those possibility of bombs out there are there other bombs . Is there anything else you want to say in but that was not asked. He was taken away on his way out he seemed to mouth to one of the people in the courtroom, a half sister, i love you, and then he left, and then when the attorneys came down knowing what had happened in atlanta today, that the post office was closed and this image which we can show you, an image from cnn of the package that was addressed to cnn and certainly appears to be similar to the other 14 that have been picked up in the mail stream, more or less, just about every juncture, one being delivered by the authorities, but stopped when asked the attorneys about well, if there are more in the mail stream, and your client knows how many more, isnt there an obligation to share that information and this is what attorney Jamie Benjamin had to say. Maybe that bomb was mailed after he was arrested on friday morning and thats an exculpatory thing that shows somebody else out there is sending bombs. How do we know that . This rush to judgment that everybody is doing is not fair to a criminal a person accused of a criminal offense. Hes at this point not convicted of anything. Hes accused. And that doesnt mean he did it. 300 people were exonerated by the Innocence Project that were on death row. This particular person has been accused of something. And its up to the government to prove it. Right now they have no proof. And theres no indication that there are bombs out there that are dangerous that have anything to do with mr. Sayoc. So that is the vigorous defense you would expect from any defense attorney. Clearly prosecutors, the fbi, and the investigation here by the department of justice suggests otherwise. This will move forward, but at this point with sayoc, not saying anything to investigators. There really is no way to know if there are more that have been mailed and if there are more package bombs that are out there, and that, of course, would perhaps be the most immediate concern right now. For the people who thought they put this behind them last week, there are still investigators and security people looking out for more of the packages. Kerry, thank you. A shooting that resulted in the deaths twof black people at a kentucky krogers store is being investigated as a hate crime. Reports say the suspect who is white entered the store last wednesday afternoon and shot and killed the first victim, 69yearold maurice stallard. Then he shot his second victim, vickie lee jones.
