Matter what. Have a good one. Maybe with a baby. All right. I will close the border, looks like the president isnt shutting down the southern border this week. This hour, the president s going to arrive at calexico at a patrol station to tout the completion of a, quote, new wall thats actually not a new wall, its an upgrade to an existing fence that started under the Obama Administration. Nevertheless, the president is intensifying his message about a crisis at the border despite retreating from his earlier threats to completely shutting down the border, claiming that mexico is making some changes. Because mexico has been absolutely terrific for the last four days. Theyre apprehending everybody. Yesterday, they apprehended 1,400 people. The day before, it was 1,000. And if they apprehend people at their southern border where they dont have to walk through, thats a big home run. We can handle it from there. Interesting, except heres the thing. Mexico isnt doing anything new and associate policy analyst with the Migration Policy Institute tells msnbc mexico is doing the same enforcement they did under previous administrations. Nbc has reporters on the ground to show you what is actually going on. Lets start with nbc news hans my cools at the calexico Border Patrol station where the president is participating in a round table on immigration and Border Patrol. Hans . Reporter the president will be arriving here to receive that briefing but the overall goal here is to draw attention to what a lot of white house officials think is an argument that is shifting in their behavior. Now, you see a little bit of activity here behind me, the entrance, a lot of folks here ready to show their support for the president. They clearly believe that his approach on the border is the right one. Then the president s going to leave here and go down about a mile and a half and actually visit those steel slats, fencing barrier, whatever you want to call it. One thing you cant say is that President Donald Trump was behind the building of the new fencing there. That actually happened under the previous administration. Now, they do have requests in through the pentagon, through dhs, to have more Pentagon Spending for an Additional Border about 218 miles of pedestrian fencing. Well see if there are any concrete announcements on that, specifically from the army corps of engineers that actually needs to send out those contracts. Hans, thank you very much. Traveling with the president in calexico, california. Also in calexico is gatty schwartz. Whats happening where you are . Reporter yeah, were just about a mile down from where hans is and its a very bizarre scene. This is an outlet mall here, youve got people gathering. Up here on the roof you can barely make out their heads but those are cbp officers with long guns and youve got all kinds of people here, that is the border wall all the way along here. I think youve got cbp officers who are standing here watching protesters have a dance party in the middle of the day. They believe that President Trump is going to be passing by here. Theyve been Holding Signs and theyve been floating that big antitrump balloon, but what the president is expected to see is a little bit further down. Its basically that bollard style fencing that stretches for about two and a half miles here. This is a type of fencing that people in calexico say theyre used to by now. Many of them say that it is unnecessary. They still see people coming over the fence but there are still some in this crowd that say they support President Trump. Back to you. Calexico, california. The president s threat to close off the border might be wavering but like anything in this administration, nothings certain and the reality is that these threats are creating real concern for many businesses. The reality is mexico is currently our Third Largest trading partner, slightly behind canada and china. The latest numbers show that u. S. Trade with mexico totaled an estimated 615. 9 billion in 2017. Exports at 276. 2 billion that year, imports, 339. 8 billion. Of those exports, beef products alone brought in a total of 1 billion to the united states. Nbcs mariana is in santa teresa, new mexico, talking to cattle drivers on what this threat means for the cattle industry. Mariana . Reporter they tell me it could already be impacting their industry. Im at the largest Cattle Crossing port of entry along the entire southern border. You see this fence behind me . This is the border fence, ali, and theres a gate that opens once a day to let the cattle in from mexico. 3,500 cattle cross through here every day. That cattle is processed in the united states, it may end up on your dinner table, ali, or mine, or the u. S. Might export it back to mexico and all week long, weve been talking to cattle traders here who tell us they are nervous about the president s threats. Lets hear it. Were trying to draw up upfront contracts and these guys dont want to commit because probably they theyll probably think theyre not going to receive these cattle, you know . So, its creating a little different dynamic of how we do business. Now we have to trade on a daily basis. Reporter already, as you heard, the president s rhetoric is changing how they do their business, their ability to draw up these five, sixmonth contracts. The cows, on the other hand, their going about their business as usual. There was a bit of a delay on the line. Mariana, thank you for your continued excellent reporting by the mexico border, santa teresa, new mexico. Before he left for his trip to the border, President Trump said the march jobs report showed that the u. S. Economy is doing very well. The Labor Department reported today that employers added 196,000 net new jobs in march and the Unemployment Rate stayed at 3. 8 . Both of those numbers are good. The Labor Department also revised februarys job gains up from 20,000 to 33,000. Thats not a good number but it appears to be an outlier. The Labor Force Participation rate fell slightly from 63. 2 in february to 63 in march. Average hourly earnings, this is whats interesting to people, for nonfarm employees, because thats what this survey measures, rose 4 cents last month to 27. 70. Year over year, thats an increase of 3. 2 . That is better than inflation. Its actually not bad. A lot of people will tweet me and say, how come my wages arent up. Thats because a lot of the wages are gained at the lower end of the range. People earning minimum wage have seen increases to that. Most of that is good news but it doesnt seem to be enough for President Trump. Literally seconds after touting this economy as the best ever, he called on the Federal Reserve, which has been raising Interest Rates in recent years, to reverse course. I personally think the fed should drop rates. I think they really slowed us down. Theres no inflation. I would say in terms of quantitative tightening, it should actually now be quantitative easing. Very little, if any, inflation, and i think they should drop rates and they should get rid of quantitative tightening. You would see a rocket ship. Despite that, were doing very well. So, my boss, in case shes listening, says that i like to talk about quantitative easing but i dont tell people what et means so im hoping that my boss is listening right now. This ones for you. Lets take a closer look at what the president is actually talking about here. Quantitative easing was the huge stimulus that the Federal Reserve deployed after the financial crisis of 2008. In all, the Federal Reserve inserted 4. 5 trillion into the Financial System to prop up americas economy. And they did that by purchasing bonds from banks for years. The fed was able to keep Interest Rates at historic lows and stimulate an economic recovery as rates are low, people are likely to borrow more, companies are likely to borrow to expand. Now, the feds moves also helped the stock market reach new heights because when Interest Rates are so low, the only place that investors can put their money tends to be in the stock market. Sometimes in real estate as well. But the stock market tends to be the net recipient of low Interest Rates. Now since 2017, the fed has been unwinding all those bonds that it piled on to its Balance Sheet and rates have been inching back up. These are this is this the the s p 500 but as you can see, this stock market continues to go up. The fed chair, then chair janet yellen, announced at the end of quantitative easing, saying the basic message here is that u. S. Economic performance is good and even though many analysts think were overdue for another recession, americas economy continues to show signs of resilience. Thanks, in part, to the quantitative easing that the fed undertook all those years ago. Joining me to take a closer look at this is cnbc editor at large, john harwood. Its funny to hear those two things in the same sentence. Best, strongest economy ever and we should get into quantitative easing. Quantitative easing is important in moments where you require serious stimulus to an economy. It doesnt make any sense as an economic matter, almost any economist you talk to would say, and in fact, almost every economist did during the Obama Administration while quantitative easing was going on, at least on the republican side, economists said, oh, they ought to raise rates back up, they ought to normalize. Donald trump said that. Many republicans said that. The janet yellen started that process, its continued under jay powell, but this is a reflection of the president s focus on moment to moment activities, things that affect him personally, and if he is seized with the idea that slightly faster Economic Growth would be better for him, hes going to call for things that he thinks would do that. Whether or not it makes sense as an economic strategy, you know, as you indicated, ali, you do this when you need it. You dont do it when you dont need it. Thats how you overheat an economy. Heres the issue. If you look at the economy, if you look at the dow and i dont know if weve got the dow we can put up there but if you look at the dow as a proxy for the economy, as this president tends to do, then to him, you lower Interest Rates, and that means stocks will perform better, which is how he tends to always measure how good he is about the economy. Right. He wants these immediate report cards, the movement of the stock market from moment to moment. He wants to get shortterm Economic Growth, and you know, we did have a an uptick in growth in 2018 after that 2017 tax cut, but now that is now fading. You know, this is a recovery thats ten years old. The job growth that we have for the tenth year of recovery is very strong. Averaging 180,000 a month when you smooth out january, february, and march so far, so thats positive. But what you dont want to do is get all political with the Federal Reserve. Weve seen him in the last few days indicate that he wants to put steve moore, who is not an economist, but hes somebody who has been a an economic political actor on the republican side, and herman cain, who was an executive, who was chair of the regional fed in kansas city but doesnt really have any Monetary Policy expertise, because the president s looking for political juice on the fed so that they will give him some political juice in the economy as he runs for relegislatielect. You said it but i just want to remind everybody and its not atypical but when donald trump was not president , he was complaining that the Federal Reserve kept Interest Rates too low and it is typical for president s to not like fed chairs increasing Interest Rates on their watch but this is different. This is a 180degree turn from what President Trump said during the election and its very unusual to put this kind of public pressure on a Federal Reserve chief, who, by the way, replaced somebody who was doing a perfectly good job justice because trump wanted his own person there. Its not just President Trump. You may recall that when rick perry, then the governor of texas, was running for the republican nomination in 2012, he said that ben bernanke, the republican fed chair appointed by president bush, that if he came to texas, he wouldnt be welcome in texas because he was seen to be, you know, debasing the currency and goosing the economy to try to help president obama. So, President Trump and herman cain, people like that were saying, they ought to raise Interest Rates. Well, now theyre doing it and theyre doing it at an appropriate time to do it, although theyve paused it now, and he doesnt like it as much. He doesnt like the idea that this economy is slowing down, fed says 2. 1 this year, lower in his reelection year and hes trying to see what he can do about it now. John, good to see you as always. Up next, 2020 Democratic Candidates make their pitches to black voters at the National Action Network Convention opening up on a variety of issues, but perhaps no one was more open than senator Bernie Sanders who held nothing back when talking about President Trump. It gives me no pleasure to tell you that we have a president today who is a racist. Who is a sexist. Who is a homophobe, who is a xenophobe and who is a religious bigot. I wish i did not have to say that. But that is the damn truth and we got to say it. [woman] with sharks duo clean, i dont just clean, i deep clean carpets and floors, so i got this. Yep, this too, and this, please. Even long hair and pet hair are no problem, but the one thing i wont have to clean is this because the sharks selfcleaning brush roll removes the hair wrap while i clean. [announcer] shark, the vacuum that deep cleans now cleans itself. Might mean a trip back to the Doctors Office just for a shot. But why go back there when you can stay home with Neulasta Onpro . Strong chemo can put you at risk of serious infection. In a key study neulasta reduced the risk of infection from 17 to 1 , a 94 decrease. Neulasta onpro is designed to deliver neulasta the day after chemo and is used by most patients today. Neulasta is for certain Cancer Patients receiving strong chemotherapy. All right, put down your foepz, close your laptops, according to a new nbc news wall street journal poll, 57 of americans say social media sites do more to divide the country than to bring it together. 61 think social media spreads unfair attacks and rumors against public figures and corporations. Consider this when some of the highest spending advertisers on facebook are president ial candidates, including four out of the top five last week alone. 60 of americans say they dont even trust facebook to protect their personal information. And a staggering 82 of americans say social media is a waste of time. 7 in 10 americans say they use social media at least once a day. Theres a lot of conflicting stuff in there and speaking of that distrust in facebook a new report shows it might be for a good reason. Researchers at a tech company are accusing the social media platform of being home base to hundreds of thousands of potential criminals after they uncovered more than 70 facebook groups selling your credit card information and passwords in plain sight. Nbc News Technology correspondent jacob ward explains. Reporter millions log in every day, but now researchers are shining a bright light on a very dark corner of the largest social media network. In a new report titled hiding in plain sight facebooks criminal marketplaces researchers from the Technology Company cisco discovered facebook groups openly selling stolen credit card numbers, passwords, and hacking tools. We found 74 different groups with over 385,000 members which is really a large number. I mean, thats the population of tampa. You know, basically openly conducting criminal activity. We found 74 different groups with over 385,000 members which is really a large number. I mean, thats the population of tampa. You know, basically openly conducting criminal activity. Reporter that is Craig Williams from the Cybersecurity Team that uncovered these potentially criminal groups. During our investigation, the groups that we found were public. Anyone could find them if they searched for the right thing or even if their friends were members of the groups or had accidentally joined the group, it could recommend it for you which was really one of the more concerning parts of it is people could see these groups without even intentionally finding them. Reporter the hacker groups offer a menu of stolen data. A premium verified by Visa Credit Card with a copy of a drivers license goes for 15. The Research Team warns that the fact facebook was automatically suggesting users join these groups makes this case even more dangerous. Unfortunately, instead of connecting people with, you know, positive hobbies, its connecting people with criminal means. Reporter this is not the first Time Facebook has been accused of hosting fraudulent activity on its platform. Nbc news has previously reported fake profile accounts on the platform. At the time, facebook said they have deleted over 1. 3 billion fake accounts and have over 30,000 employees focused on security. In a statement to nbc news, Facebook Says these groups violated our policies against spam and financial fraud and we removed them. We know we need to be more vigilant and were investing heavily to fight this type of activity. The goal of all social Media Companies is to get people on to the platform quickly with as few barriers as possible but that also becomes a vulnerability for the platforms over time. If you want to do criminal activity or other conspiracies, its very easy to do them because you can get there and upload it faster than the company can really police your activity. Reporter criminal activity usually limited to the dark web is now moving into the light on a social network near you. Jacob joins me now. Thanks, jacob. Facebooks response is basically some sort of, we know, were investing heavily to fight this type of thing. Do these responses mean anything . You know, its really an amazing piece of spin. It basically says, we acknowledge the existence of the problem, we are concerned about it and we also have an entirely openended deadline for dealing with it so at this point, no, i dont think that carries any water. Its just showing that there is an avalanche of these kind of things coming at the company and its just reaction after reaction but no real solutions. So, recently, Mark Zuckerberg made an announcement about encrypting things. I think it was mostly messaging. This is a different situation. This is criminals posting stuff in plain sight. Is this a facebook managing i mean, in other words, can facebook fix this problem or is it some other problem . Its really a great thing to ask, because theres the perception from zuckerberg in what he writes in opeds and what he suggests when he talks about this new plan with encrypting the various platforms that theres some sort of grand plan for fixing this but what that stuff really does, if they really encrypt the way that you and i communicate and the way that people who, in this case, are selling illegal stuff communicate, all that really does is inoculate the company against blame. It basically puts them in a position where they can say were a neutral platform, no ones going to we dont know what youre doing on the platform. We just provide it for you. And so it just deepens this problem in which stuff like this, the creation of a flea market for criminals is sort of a feature rather than a bug of the platform. Thats what you and i have been talking about so much. We worry about facebook selling, trading, or leaking information that we give to them. This is different. This is a yeah, a flea market. All right, jacob, thank you. And im sorry. Go ahead. Thank you. I was just going to say the thing thats so irritating about it is using the features of facebook thats our common interests and it actually recommends people these groups, its not as if you had to go really hard to find them. The system will recommend the group to you and that really shows that theres just something out of control here. Jacob, thanks for your great reporting as always. Jacob ward in san francisco. Up next, we are live at the National Action Network Convention where 2020 Democratic Candidates are making their appeals to black voters. Were going to hear what some of them had to say about it next. Rf them had to say about it next. Webut some of us turn outhose dreams. Into action. The bookers. The doers. The hit that confirmation button and lets go ers because bookers know that the Perfect Place to stay. Is right there for the booking. Be a booker at booking. Com the worlds 1 choice for booking accommodations. 2020s top democratic contenders are making their pitches to black voters and todays annual National Action Network Convention hosted by reverend al sharpton, the focus was on the countrys ongoing issue with inequality. In america, justice has not been applied equally for all. Lets speak truth, that in the last two years, we have seen hate crimes on the rise, but what has this administration done . Investigated 60 fewer civil rights cases, slashed programs for fighting violent White Nationalist extremists, and shut down the domestic terrorism intelligence unit. That is not justice. That is injustice. Slavery is the nagging, unrelenting shame of america. It continues to deny the true promise of this country to too many of its citizens. We must own our past and acknowledge the shame, the sin, the injustice, and the ongoing consequences of enslaving an entire race of people. And we must apologize and that apology should come from the oval office. Needless to say, i was campaigning for president obamas reelection. When donald trump and his republican allies were trying to suppress the black vote in the 2016 general election, i was running around this country campaigning for Hillary Clinton and pressing for automatic Voter Registration to expand the vote. Black women are more likely to be breadwinners for their family, are more likely to work more, are more likely to get paid less, and are the least likely to be able to afford decent child care. And this is not just an accident of statistics. It is the legacy of decades of systemic discrimination against black women. I say this to this community right now. We are facing tough days where theyre rolling back civil rights, tough days where theyre rolling back voting rights, tough date where the blackwhite wealth gap has grown over my lifetime. These are tough days. But we, as a people, who have come this far by faith, we must stay faithful. All right, covering the event for us is nbcs road warrior ally vitali. No one was on the wrong side of the issue so what stood out . Reporter yeah, i think a lot of the candidates came here with similar messaging on the themes that the civil rights conference would function upon, the folks here wanted to hear about how you would combat Voter Suppression. They wanted to hear about how you would go about criminal Justice Reform and so those come out of the issues that were touched upon but at the same time, the candidates who were here, the folks who were listening to them have no idea who they want to vote for yet. Theyre still very much in the deciding mode, trying to suss out who is real and whos just talking about these issues and that was one of the things that reverend al sharpton led off with here when we showed up on wednesday. He said that he wanted to hear how they were going to impact change, not just red meat lines that will fire people up. But one of the key issues that continue to come up here was this talk about reparations, and i want to give you a sense of how these candidates were talking about those issues. Weve got a mashup of how that played out. Take a listen. Congress should convene a study on the best way to provide reparations. If you are elected president , would you sign that bill if it came across your desk . When i am elected president , i will sign that bill. The issue of reparations. This is a conversation that is long overdue. So i want to let you know where i stand. I firmly support congresswoman jackson lees bill to create a commission to study reparations. If you are elected president and such a bill was passed, would you sign the bill for reparations . Yes, i would. Hr 40. Y support that bill. Reporter and ali, you asked me at the beginning what the the most interesting thing here was and i have to say ive been struck over the course of the past several months at how palpable the georgia covgoverno race still is. Ive been with Stacey Abrams at several conferences now and when she speaks about that loss, specifically black audiences really do feel that the struggle that she faced of Voter Suppression in georgia, when she talks about how she believes that that election was stolen from her, they agree with that and so i think that its a really longlasting scar for the members of this voting kmucommuy and so as people go out in 2020 and try to woo black voters, thats a race thats still really fresh in their mind and they dont want to go through what theyve gone through in georgia governors race as they go on in 2020 so Voter Suppression was at the heart of a lot of this. When Stacey Abrams was here, the entire room was rapt because of how she wants to go forward and rectify that issue and so i know shes a figure thats not officially in thiseld but shesn if she doesnt decide to run for president is someone whos going to be crucial in shaping the conversation around these issues in 2020. Ali v. , thank you for joining me and for your reporting there and for the latest installment of the ali v. Show from the National Action convention in new york city. Up next, more 2020 president i president ial candidate, john delanie, Howard Schultz open up about issues that are front and center for them. Heres what they have to say after the break. I am looking at the current situation, economically, in this country and if you want to solve the problems, you have to have the kind of leadership that cooperates with one another and is not steeped in ideology. Ith is not steeped in ideology nal s. But youre not, because you have e trade, whose tech isnt complicated. It helps you understand the risk and reward potential on an options trade. Dont get mad. Get e trade. All right, the first votes wont be cast for another ten months, but that is not stopping democrats hoping to take on President Trump next year from making their case to voters. Right now, there are 17 democrats who have either declared that they are running or are exploring a white house bid and the field may be far from filled out. Of those 17, one of them is maryland congressman john delaney who was the first back in 2017 to announce that he is seeking the democratic nomination. Del delaney says he doesnt embrace socialist policies. We talked with him about how hell try to win over the voters who embrace policies like medicare for all and connect with voters who feel left out by the current system. Those voters are right to be upset because we failed them. And the reason we failed them is because we havent done anything. The world has changed. Globalization and technological innovation has reshaped every aspect of our society and we didnt do the basic things we should have done to prepare our citizens for this change in public education, in healthcare, in tax policy, in regulation, in addressing climate, go down the list. So what i think this generation is looking for is someone to actually get these things done. So whats your best solution . The best solution on all that stuff, theres common ground. On climate, we should put a carbon tax in place like the bipartisan bill i introduced. Democrats and republicans, i was able to put them together and put a price on carbon, take all the revenues, return it to the American People in a dividend. I can get that done in my first year as president with all the democrats and the republicans who live in coastal states. John delaney wasnt the only declared or potential president ial candidate who stephanie and i talked with today. Howard schultz, former chairman and ceo of starbucks is considering a run for the white house as an independent candidate. He said President Trump will be reelected if the Democratic Party veers too far to the left but does he think hes got a path to get the 270 Electoral College votes that he would need to win . Heres what he told us. In the last 30plus years, only 8 to 10 battleground states have decided the president ial election. If i entered the race, over 40 states for the first time in 30plus years will have an opportunity in which your republican or democratic vote in a red or blue state will really matter. That changes everything. So theres a path to 270 and its real because not only of the math because the country is so divided, fed up, exhausted and disgusted by our political system and thats a fact. You put up a stat before thats 50 of americans dont trust facebook. 71 of the americans dont trust our government. We need a change. Thats the first off. Second thing is, now, for the First Time Since george washington, if an independent person, if i run, and am fortunate enough to get to the white house, can you imagine the historic mandate for the first time in over 200plus years, we dont want a democrat or a republican, we want an independent with Common Sense Solutions and leadership skills who has built a Global Enterprise in 77 countries, understands the world, russia, china, syria, the middle east, this whole aspect, and has proven you can build a company and reward your people at the same time. So, what do i believe . The American People are going to say to all the republicans and all the democrats, if you dont work with this independent person whos running for president , were going to fire you. All right, despite our best efforts to get him to answer, schultz wouldnt give stephanie or me a firm yes or no when we asked if he was actually going to jump into the president ial race. The democratic president ial candidates have moosly been focusing their stump speeches on healthcare and Economic Issues while President Trumps been talking about immigration and Border Security. The president is in Southern California today to critvisit a section of force in calexico. He just arrived at a meeting with Law Enforcement officers protecting the border. Immigration is also a big topic for president ial candidates, former texas congressman beto orourke who used to represent a border district has been a leading voice in the fight against the president s Border Security policy. Garrett joins us now from iowa. Good to see you. Beto orourke knows that border area well. Hes got a very different view of how things are than the one that the president is trying to portray so how does he convince voters who dont live in that area that the crisis the president s portraying isnt actually a crisis. Reporter yeah, the border and immigration issues are absolutely central to orourkes campaign. He talks about it at every stop and gets questioned about it at every stop. To the degree he sees a crisis at the border, he sees it as a crisis of our own making, a humanitarian crisis, of parents and children being separated and as a failure of americans to live up to our principles at the border. I have been fascinated by this. The different language that is used to discuss the border by the president and his allies and the democrats on the trail, particularly orourke and i asked him this morning about that dichotomy, who wins the battle and how, talking about what the border is and what its not. Heres what he said. I would say because of those immigrants who call el paso, texas, storm lake, iowa, home, so that positive story needs to be shared along with the facts and the statistics about whatever crisis we may think we have on the border, it pales in comparison to the apprehensions that weve seen in years past that many of those who we are apprehending are kids, are mothers, are families at their most desperate, at their most vulnerable moment. Reporter and to system degree, orourkes message here is working with the crowds he talked to at this last event, i talked to a republican couple who were here shopping for candidates and as they walked away, the gentleman said, i didnt realize how many of these folks arent sneaking across the border in the dead of night but are showing up to turn themselves in as asylum seekers. It is slow going when youre competing with a president who has the bully pulpit as donald trump does but that is what orourke is trying to do in a lot of these communities here very far from the border. What are we hearing from other democrats like the other conversation i was having with ali, talking about issues facing black voters. There isnt that much space between the candidates on their views of immigration at the moment. Reporter no, theres not. There is some space in how much they talk about this issue. It shouldnt be surprising, perhaps, that the two texans in the race are the ones talking about it the most. Julian castro earlier this week came out with what is by far the most comprehensive immigration plan that i have seen put out by any of these Democratic Candidates. He talked about essentially decriminalizing border crossing, taking the illegal out of illegal immigration and he talks about a 21st century Marshall Plan for those Central American countries that are sending so many people north. Thats something i think youll hear more about. Orourke has been talking about that. I expect if joe biden gets into the race, when joe biden gets into the race, that will be something they talk about as well. Immigration as a Foreign Policy issue, that essentially by the time folks show up on our border, we have already failed from a policy perspective. When im hearing less of is some of the language around things like abolishing i. C. E. That we heard so much of late last year. That has not been as common on the trail. Ill be curious to see as the president continues to highlight the immigration issue from his perspective, how those democrats respond. All right, garrett, good to see you as always, thank you. New today, bill cosby settled a defamation lawsuit filed by seven women who sued him in 2014 saying he defamed them, calling them liars after they accused him of Sexual Assault. The following year, cosby filed a countersuit alleging these women defamed his character and derailed a potential television opportunity for him. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed but the attorney for each of the women says each of the plaintiffs is satisfied. The founder and ceo of the National Civil rights nonprofit organization, rise, will join me next to talk about this initiative and how its going to have an impact on communities nationwide. Speak to your doctor before stopping prolia® as spine and other bone fractures have occurred. Prolia® can cause serious side effects, like low blood calcium, serious infections, which could need hospitalization, skin problems, and severe bone, joint, or muscle pain. Are you ready . Ask your doctor how prolia® can help strengthen your bones. In an era of political tribalism in washington, a nonprofit now seeks to restore power to the people. The civil rights organization, rise, is launching a new incubator. Rise justice labs. It aims to help everyday people pass their first law. It guides them through the legislative process and gives them access to civic strategies. Rise has successfully passedsuc laws affecting nearly 40 million survivors of Sexual Assault since its founding in 2014. Then theres zero usa, a group that advocates for gun violence prevention. It is thes ken me on. Joining me is the founder and ceo of rise and has been nominated for the 2019 nobel peace prize. Great to see you again. Thank you. Im glad youre here. I dont mean to bring up unsavory history. But you needed to find legislation. Thats right. You were struggling as a Sexual Assault survivor. Umhum. So you started this because you needed legislation. Thats right. Four years ago i started rise because i needed civil rights. My background is really nerd dy, i love astro fiphysics, i worke at nasa. What happened was after my rape i found a broken criminal justice system, rape kits were getting destroyed before the statute of limitations, i thought i could accept the injustice or rewrite the law. One was better than the other so we rewrote it. When we started rise, we sought to pass the rights through washington. People thought we were a joke, they thought how are you going to do . We won. We became the 21st bill in modern u. S. History to do so. Its amazing in this environment that we think nothing gets done and nothing is bipartisan. You are an accelerator. We understand that to be a company that provides advice, resources and possibly money to a group that shows potential to achieve something. Is that the same way you work . Exactly. In the tech world when an sbeerp neurohas a good idea, they can pitch the idea and get the idea funded. It doesnt exist for civil activists who want to start their own laws. So rise does that. We have seed funding, access to professional Services Like lawyers. And people get their opportunity cost to you tstart up their own movement covered. Talk to me about zero usa. We started Rise Justice Lab under the radar eight months ago. These incredible young people, founder of zero usa, zero gun deaths in america, have been embedded in us and working on hope economics, which helps access the ledge slayive process. These people over the last eight months have organized in the last 15 states, robert met with President Trump in the oval office, along with other democratic leadership in the house. And last month he testified in the Colorado State house on a bill which they support, extreme Risk Protection order. That bill has passed and its on its way to the governors ask. Extreme risk yes. Its when individuals who are a danger to themselves or others for a limited time have their firearms taken away from them if a judge declares that to be so. I think we can talk to people about hope economics. I like that one. Its a theory i created. It takes game design theory and National Security theory and applies it to grass roots organizing. So i broke down the levels to make it accessible. Games have a couple aspects to it, they have a clear objective, this is pass your law. Then you have Different Levels you skills build along the way. When an organizer joins rise they are assigned a coach. A coach is someone who won their game. They went through the game and got their bill on the governors desk and got it signed into law. Those people come back to the game and coach new people giving back to the program. So hope economics is not a bumper sticker, its a curriculum about getting laws passed. Thats right. So weve seen people the last two years frustrated running for office. And youre doing something different. If you dont want to run for office, there are ways to get laws passed in a bipartisan m manner in state houses across this country in congress. I agree with that. This is a time of frustration. A time of not only political tribalism but waning faith in our democracy. Its never been more important for people to understand they hold the power. Im quite honestly sick of politicians, i think its a dereliction of duty to choose sound bites for retweets rather than policy, and in the meantime people are suffering. I didnt have the luxury of a cathartic performance. I needed to compromise in order to pass the laws, in order for my own civil rights to be penned. Thats what were teaching other people too. Were not waiting around for the politicians to do what theyre doing. They cant even keep themselves open. What other industry would we accept that . We want to show that everyday people have agency. You can pass laws. We will help you. And that no one is powerless and weak together. If you dont understand why amanda has been no, maminated 2019 noble peace prize now you do.
