The republican president ial nomination from former Massachusetts Governor bill well. Lets begin with the lastminute efforts by democrats to get voter do voters on their side ahead of the primary. Its led to friction between the two campaigns in the closing hours of the campaign. Joining me is political reporter Shaquille Brewster with the Sanders Campaign and Vaughn Hilliard with the Buttigieg Campaign. Shaq, lets talk to you about Bernie Sanders and his attacks on Pete Buttigieg as we get into the final hours. He is really focusing on Pete Buttigiegs support which comes from wealthy people, associated wit the billionairess and hoping that the supporters of buttigieg make that association, Pete Buttigieg equals billionaires. Reporter you nailed it. This is a attack that surfaced after iowa. They were raising the expectations and then they kind of came out of iowa with the tie and senator sanders bringing up the headlines, the narrative that mayor pete gets a lot of support from billionaires and hammered home over the course of the weekend. He did not mention mayor pete by name just yet but it is clear who hes referring to in the comments earlier today in the events earlier throughout the day. Listen to senator sanders maicing that comment. What we have also done in this campaign, i want everybody here to be very proud of that, what we have done is change the nature of the game in terms of funding campaigns. All right . Historically in america, what candidates do is, i need a lot of money, go to a home and raise money, even in the newspapers today you can see candidates conferring with their donors. Reporter and i need to correct myself because literally as we were playing that sound senator sanders just mentioned mayor Pete Buttigieg, just mentioned mayor bloomberg talking about the support of billionaires and the funding an money they spend in the campaign. Ill just say if you look at a greater picture of this, New Hampshire and how this campaign feels, they feel good about the position here. They feel like they have a geographical advantage. Senator sanders won here in 2016 handily and feels like they can repeat that performance, maybe not that margin but the performance and get a win that can drive them into nevada and South Carolina and number two, they really stress the ground game here. I was talking to his state director about this, they said they knocked on 150,000 doors on saturday alone. We cant verify the numbers but they highlight they have volunteers like the people behind me and the 17 field offices across the state knocking on doors remining people that election day is tomorrow and senator sanders say if theres high turnout he will win here but he said the same thing in iowa. Ali . Vaughn hilliard, hows buttigieg and the campaign responding to this barrage of accusations of Bernie Sanders or at least the attempt by Bernie Sanders to portray him as the candidate of the wealthy . Reporter sure. You know, the Pete Buttigieg campaign does not mind going toe to toe with Bernie Sanders. They want that narrative in voters minds. They want voters here to believe its a twoman race, essentially saw coming out of iowa and polling to a certain extent showing, kind of putting the other candidates off to the side here. You know . In this race here, this is polling only tells us so much and you have to focus on 415,000 registered independents here in the state that can take part in the democratic process tomorrow and also still unknown among the democratic electorate. I want to let you hear from congresswoman custer on with andrea earlier today talking about the undecided voters she to note backing Pete Buttigieg in this race. Take a listen. I started my first president ial i was 16 years old and i was a del inaugurate for john kerry, i worked on the Obama Campaign for close to two years. I have never seen the undecideds this high this late in the game and i think its about the responsibility is so great this year. We have got to win in november and get our country back. Reporter in what congresswoman is going through is what the voters here are going through. I want to tell you about a voter. Pete buttigieg needs a swell of support, especially among the independents, and the question is, to what extent can he draw that support . Larry voted for jeb bush in the republican primary back in 2016. Hes a registered independent. I first met him over the summer at a Kamala Harris event. He said he was looking seriously to joe biden and i called to check in this afternoon and see where he is at now. He said joe biden hurt himself. About Pete Buttigieg, he said the resume is thin. I know he is sorry. I know he has million tear background and the mayor of society bend but i dont know much more beyond that. How many folks can Pete Buttigieg bring over . You know who larry is voting for . Andrew yang. This is an open field, ali. That logic didnt make a whole lot of sense. Not sure who Pete Buttigieg is. Maybe you like andrew yang better. Thats acceptable. I dont know that more people reporter welcome to New Hampshire, ali. The Buttigieg Campaign joining the Sanders Campaign in asking for the recount or recanvassing of the precincts in iowa, not the same precincts but can you bring us up to stage . Iowa seems like a month ago. Earlier this week sanders wants 26, buttigieg 66 precincts recanvassed. What does that mean and whats the likely outcome . Reporter exactly. Iowa Democratic Party this week declared the results final. At the same time, each campaign is asking for recanvas because they have numbers that dont match up and discrepancies with the satellite caucus locations, how the delegates awarded. Both camps maintain they want the results to be hashed out fair and square. Both candidates would like to argue that they won the iowa caucus. Bernie sanders looking at the popular voter folks on the first pick won but when based off of the final delegate allocation from iowa Democratic Party Pete Buttigieg came out on top and right now its a virtual tie and appears theres still quite a ways to go before we get the ultimate finalfinal if we may, ali. All right. Good to see you, my friend. Vaughn hilliard for us in milford, New Hampshire. Shaq brewster, also, in New Hampshire. Right now, senator klobuchar making a pitch to New Hampshire voters. This is a third stop of the day and continues to ride what the campaign is calling klobomentum. Joining me now from that event in New Hampshire is msnbcs garrett haake. For amy clob char, the debate on friday night, she believes, was very strong. They raised a great deal of money on it and seemed to have helped her in some recent polling. Reporter yeah. That seems to be the case. So much of the electoral politics is about timing, getting hot at the right time and clob char and the campaign feel like thats what they were ek peern experiencing and then they had couple good moments including debate on friday night and she believes she set herself apart in time for it to matter so they have been talking a lot about momentum within this campaign. I just stepped off of klobuchars bus. I asked her how she will know if that momentum is something that she could call success here in New Hampshire. Listen to what she told me. What are your expectations for tomorrow night . How will you know if youre skeske successful . For me, the fact that im where i am when i dont have the Biggest Bank Account by any means. I dont have the name i. D. I didnt run for president before. But ive just kept meeting every single standard. I think a lot of people thought i wouldnt make it through my speech in the middle of the snowstorm and wont make it through the summer or the next debate and we are. And we are headed to nevada, in that debate. We are excited about the crowds we are seeing in New Hampshire and just the kind of momentum we see on the ground. It is really exciting for us. Reporter and so, ali, you hear a fairly cautious candidate there essentially trying to keep and meet expectations, setting expectations low, clearing the bar, clearing the bar, clearing the bar. Thats the path to victory for a candidate like that climbing up. Again, hoping to break at the right time, trying to reach here in New Hampshire before the calendar does get more difficult for her in nevada and South Carolina. States where she is not able to spend quite as much time, ali . Ill take advantage of the noise and cheering behind you. Amy klobuchar said on morning joe seeing record crowds and enthusiasm enthis sounds like it. Whens the feel on her campaign right now . Reporter yeah. That has been the case recently. From large events last night, she set and broke her own records for campaign crowds. Yesterday afternoon and then yesterday evening and good crowd this morning. A boisterous group here. It is a large and fired up group and the campaign is still adding events. Momentum and politics, a lot of it is what you make of it. Her campaign is packing her days full of additional events trying to get her in front of as many voters here in New Hampshire. 40 of independents who they hope to be folks her moderate message will appeal, especially late in the game. Good did see you, garrett. Whats the state of play here in New Hampshire . I want to bring in senior politics editor beth fuey. Amy klobuchar said to garrett when asked how will i know its a success here. Its not clear what that message looks like because she didnt poll that well in iowa and not in the polling shown a bump here in New Hampshire but there is something called momentum in these races. Yeah. What garrett was saying is exactly right. It is important when you get hot in politics and she is having a hot moment after that debate where she fought it out, she went after Pete Buttigieg. Shes had all the campaign events, riding that wave. We dont know how effective this is going to be and she did not do well in way and that was supposed to be here big play and she, too, from the midwest. Fly overcountry. Shes from there. She doesnt fly over. She lives there. She came in fifth in the place where she planted the flag and whether that hurts her or not well fiend out tomorrow night. Theres a large group of candidates on the ballot tomorrow. Bernie sanders, been here for five years. Did very well in 2016. Bested Hillary Clinton by 20 points so his people are bernies people and everybody else looking at the broader field. A lot of undecideds. Seeing Amy Klobuchar in the debate, afterward talking to people that watched the debate, klobuchars name came up a lot. For those tuning in for the first time this to in the last few weeks, how could you characterize her . Her cam pane is sort of a scrappy underdog campaign. She made that point in that interview with garrett, never had tons of money sh, not a lot name recognize og in addition and after the poor finish in iowa, she could have thrown in the hat and she came out swinging in that debate an saying im still a player in here and looks like a fighter. Americans, democrats desperate for a candidate to beat President Trump saw that performance and said she could maybe take the fight to donald trump. Thats the name of the game. Thats the only thing these voters care about. A new National Quinnipiac poll just come out in the last hour. Amongst National Democratic primary voters, a preference, lets put that back up if we can. Its a National Poll, not a New Hampshire poll. If you look at the top names there, sanders, biden, bloomberg, warren, buttigieg, klobuchar, she is much further down at 4 in a National Poll. However, everybody above here has at some point had swipes taken at them, been in the top spot. The one thing about Amy Klobuchar is theres nobody targets her. If she has a Strong Performance tomorrow night, mentioned the nevada debate that we are hosting, she will be there. If shes doing very well or is seemingly on the rise might take incoming. What i find interesting is that theres Mike Bloomberg up there. Hasnt been on the debate stage. Skipping the whole first four states and still third position in this particular poll. Exactly. The margin of error is 3. 8. The first four very close but bloomberg, his strategy particularly in the wake of iowa not working the way it was supposed to is starting to prove interesting to people who were doubters. He is gambling that the field remains muddled, Bernie Sanders will ride high with his people and the people want an alternative to that. If Vice President biden and the other candidates dont look like they have the fight or the strength hes there. Thank you. Well see you over the next couple of days. Coming up next, live on the campaign trail with joe biden and he scrambles in the final hours for a stronger showing in New Hampshire than the one in iowa. Is it New Hampshire or bust for the man who was once seen as democrats as the best candidate to take on President Trump in november . Does your broker offer more than just free trades . Trying to make the case to people she is the best candidate to beat donald trump. What is the point she is putting forward to have voters convinced of that . Reporter first of all, ali, ill speak at a golf whisper because were do the q a portion and every single candidate out with them in the last few months trying to make the case theyre the best positioned to beat donald trump. And finally, shes talking about next fight now be against donald trump. I want to play for you a moment that happened just a few minutes ago on stage because it speaks to the climate on the ground here, a lot of people wondering after the third place finish in iowa how Elizabeth Warren from massachusetts is going to fare on the ground in New Hampshire, especially as we start seeing the polls that are coming out that show her far behind Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders. This isnt a campaign that does polls and feels like she was talking about the circumstances here. My First Campaign never done it before, i got knocked on my fan fanny multiple times during that campaign. You know what i did . Every single time i got back up. And on election day, a bunch of folks saying not which way this could go. I beat him by 7 1 2 points. Reporter and, ali, saying could go this way, that way, thats sort of a question to hear on the ground here about Elizabeth Warren but her campaign pretty even keel group of people. You were and down not frustrated and making the argument of a beginning of a protracted primary and in this for the long haul and the thing that makes this hard is they need the resources to keep it going and the numbers to look at is whatever the fec puts out for her next, ali. All right. Thank you. Mike with joe biden. Mike, according to the new Suffolk University poll we just saw, you know, if joe biden thought iowa was rough on him he needs to come out ahead of Elizabeth Warren and or Amy Klobuchar to place third in New Hampshire or he pulls some kind of a rabbit out of a hat and does better than that. Right now, joe biden at least got South Carolina and nevada to look forward to but this is tough. Reporter thats right, ali. Im struck listening to my other colleague ali and we talk a lot through television these days more to than in person and how similar the messages at this point. Both fell short of expectations in iowa. Biden acknowledges that gut punch he suffered there and tried to play into this sort of New Hampshire sensibility where they often embrace the comeback narrative and telling audiences he is knocked down before and faced adversity before and plans to fight back. Whats interesting in terms of the larger narrative, feisty rhetoric from the Vice President raising the temperature on Pete Buttigieg including that snarky ad. Thats a warning sign for joe biden. Thank you. Thanks to both of you. Up next, President Trump rolls out the 4. 8 trillion 2021 spending budget. As the democratic president ial candidates fan out across New Hampshire President Trump is attending to official business. The white house sent the congress the budget for the 2021 fiscal year beginning october 1st. The plan calls for defense spending to rise to more than 740 billion. More money for nasa to send astronauts to the moon and mars an 2 billion for the president s border wall. Also includes cuts to safety net programs and other nonmilitary spending such as education and the environment. That includes 292 billion in what the government is calling savings of food stamps and medicaid with work requirements and a 21 cut to foreign aid but Congress Holds the power of the purse and with democrats in power it is almost but certain the president s proposal will not be approved as is. Joining us is democrat chris van hollen. This is a just the president s proposal. The president s proposal never ends up becoming the budget but it is a symbol of the president s priorities and the priorities here do seem to be on track with the idea that middle class but mostly wealthy people and corporations got tax cuts and now the poor are going to get hit. Thats right, ali. It tells you what President Trump cares about and people need to understand theres a big gap between what he says about he cares about on his tweets or in the state of the Union Address and what this budget actually tells us about his priorities because as you just indicated he gave this big tax cut to very wealthy people, big corporations but the people who are paying for all that, the people whose hide it comes out of at the end of the day are hard working families, very big cuts to Health Care Despite the promises not cut medicare and Social Security and medicaid and some cuts to Public Education. So cuts to programs are important to middle class working families. And theyre having to pick up the tab through the trump budget for his big tax cuts for corporations. But this is by design, senator. I think we probably have to remind people about this. Some of the biggest increases to the deficits and debt of 20, 25 years wars an tax cuts and then everybody who hasnt talked about deficits gets very, very excited about deficits saying we have to control these and only way is to cut social spending. Well, thats exactly right, ali. I remember for years i was the senior democrat on the house budget committee, and paul ryan and the House Republicans used to lecture us and the country about the need for more fiscal responsibility. If you look over a record of time, democrats have been much more fiscally responsible than republicans because we dont provide these huge tax breaks for very wealthy people. We had more of a pay as you go approach. And if you look at this trump budget, it just bursts the seams on the debt and deficit. Any pretense that republicans had for caring about deficits is thrown out the window and thats even with magical assumptions about Economic Growth which are what luis th hallucinations in this budget the president put out. You indicated while the average winfall for people who earn more than 1 million a year had been 70,000 in the trump budget and now a cut to things like s. N. A. P. Nutrition assistance. So theres a direct relationship. Wealthy folks are getting tax cuts in the same place to cut Food Assistance to needy children, things like that. Thats right. He is shredding the safety net programs and overwhelmingly help kids, kids from low income neighborhoods, kids with disabilities. This is really a budget that hits the most vulnerable in order to give even more comfort to people at the very high end. I would also point out that he provides tax breaks for people sending kids to private schools and that is their choice. No problem there. But he provides tax breaks to those families even while hes cutting Public Education and while he is taking very deep cuts to College Student loan programs. So again, even in this budget and even on top of those tax cuts another round of tax cuts for private schools at the expense of Public Education. Senator, i want to ask you about the activities of friday where the president had Lieutenant Colonel vindman and his brother removed from the white house, he recalled his own ambassador to the eu but the idea of the payback against those people who testified under donald trump is becoming of concern to you and your colleagues. Senator schumer sent a letter to government Inspector General about witness intimidation saying that these attacks are part of a dangerous, growing pattern of retaliation against those who report wrongdoing only to find themselves targeted by the president and subject to his wrath and vindictiveness and attempts to publicly identify the anonymous whistleblower to report the president s attempts to compromise our National Security for his personal benefit. On the floor of the United States senate last week, one of your colleagues disclosed the name of the whistleblower in the u. S. Senate after trying to do so through questioning of the president s lawyers. Well, thats exactly right. And when senator paul first asked that question, the chief justice appropriately declined to read that question. It was the only question the chief justice declined to read because we should not expose or retaliation against whistleblowers. This retaliation of President Trump is designed to protect the coverup. He wants to send a signal that if you expose wrongdoing and by the way, that could be taxpayer fraud, different types of wrongdoing, if you expose it, he, donald trump, is going to come after you. He will retaliation against you. It is important to recognize that the Whistleblower Statutes designed to help protect the taxpayer against wrongdoing and misuse of funds and President Trump is saying we will gag you, shut you up if youre exposing wrongdoing anything to do with me, President Trump, or my administration. This is a very dangerous thing that the president s doing. It follows on his witness intimidation and remember people like colonel vindman, they responded to a subpoena, a lawfully issued subpoena, and then they raised a right hand and swore under penalty of perjury. The president wants to punish people who follow the law and tell the truth and do their duty and it is a terrible example for the whole government and were, taxpayers, will pay the price. Do you believe that there is a way, senator, that you and your colleagues in the house ian the senate can actually protect these people . Because the president s vindictiveness seems to know no bounds. The statutes provide protection for whistleblowers against retaliation. And so, there are going to be some real questions of whether or not the statutes will protect some of these individuals. With respect to public exposure, thats a different challenge. I think we will have to take a look at some of the existing statutes on the books to make sure we expand protections there. But the reason that senator schumer wrote to these Inspector Generals and i strongly support this initiative is to put them on full alert to use the maximum powers to protect people who are whistleblowers. That is part of the Inspector Generals function is to uncover wrongdoing within a Government Agency or wasteful spending an so to the extent that whistleblowers are punished makes it harder for the ig toz do their job and so theyre an important part of pushing back on President Trump on this front. Senator, good to see you, again. Thank you for joining me. Good to be with you. All right. Up next, the department of justice is charging four chinese Intelligence Officers for hacking the Credit Reporting Agency ek we fax and stealing the personal information of nearly 150 million americans. Chinese military hackers are responsible for one of the largest data breaches in history, the 2017 hack of equifax according to the investigation by the Justice Department. Official released pictures of the suspect this is morning. Attorney general barr says the cyber attack was a deliberate and sweeping intrusion into the information of the American People. Investigators say they broke into the Credit Reporting Agency for weeks. They were able to access Sensitive Information like names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, drivers license numbers and kardashians. Tom winter joins me live from the new york city headquarters with the latest on this. Tom, we knew somebody had it but it was news that the chinese, that military government backed hackers were involved in this. Thats the news today. The fact that the hack occurred we knew in 2017 but the breadth and scope of it and how easy to do it, raises serious questions about what equifax was doing. We know that according to the indictment, basically when this vulnerability occurred, they accessed equifaxs data partly through their online portal for filing disputes so this is something i have done, something probably people that have watched us have done and may see something on the credit score report and may say thats not there or i didnt have that card or that card closed out sometime ago and found a vulnerable on that portions of equifaxs web side and installed software on equifaxs computers and servers and begin 9,000 queries for information. We know that the u. S. Government put out an alert saying, hey, patch this the day after the chinese initially able to get through on this online portal and raises questions as to why equifax didnt begin the patching process and would have been able to stop this before any of the data was exfuill traited. The files had to be broken up on the servers by the members of the Chinese Military compressed and then sent out otherwise they would have kind of choked the internet connections. They used 34 serves in over 20 countries the try tomasing this basically use vpns and other ways to communicate and the Justice Department says they were able to match the connections directly from equifaxs servers directly back to mainstream china so fair amount of pretty intensive investigative work here by the fbi. Thank you, tom winter. Correspondent for investigations. Coming up next, New Hampshire is seeing a surge of young people newly eligible to vote but a new voting law is causing confusion of College Students. Well explain after the break. Just under 24 hours to the New Hampshire primary, theres a push to get young people to the polls. One of the laws changes the definition of a legal resident in New Hampshire. Requires people without a state license or car registration to switch the state where they reside if they intend to vote in the upcoming election. Joining me is the New Hampshire state director of next jen america. Founded in 2013 by president ial candidate, tom steyer. They work to increase youth voter registration. It is not, by the way, coordinating with the steyer campaign. The focus is to get them out the polls. Thats right. This new development, how is that work . I think honestly this is a signf him not being on the sign of students. And signing this law into place, seals the deal there. And see what happens when young people turn out. I also think this is not an issue young folks are necessarily confused about. Young folks are fire up about issues they want to vote on. This is, from what ive seen on the ground, an issue between the state. Local election officials, secretary of state are both saying Different Things right now. Weevlg rr be incorrect inform. They need to get a New Hampshire id as soon as they leave the poll location. And thats problematic because thats not in line with what the secretary has said. The secretary of state has put out guidance on the issues. These two voting laws have been, you know, i think proof that the state is very confused as to what theyre doing right now. Lets talk about young voters in general and what their level of motivation is. Young people are fired up about the issues. Theyre informed about the issues. I live my life on college campuses. And i can say whole heartedly, that gun violence pretension, health care, Voting Rights is a big one. And these are the issues young voeders want to hear candidates fake about. And they want candidates vocal on those issues. Is the idea that they stand so strong on some of the perspexives influencing the kands candidates perspectives . Students are smart, young people are really smart. In the primary, theyre going to vote with their hard and we are going to unify behind a candidate. And you think students will do that . In other words you think students will still come out and vote because there are students who are going to come out to vote for donald trump . I understand. I think the stakes are way too high for people leaning to sit this one out. And i think a lot of students agree with me on that. They are excited to get donald trump out of office. Thats the highest priority. Thanks for being with us. Hes the New Hampshire state director. Youth vote. Were back after a quick break and a check on the markets. Theres some sense we are within a week or two weeks of seeing the peek of the coronavirus. But there are factories shut down in china and thats not allowing goods to get here. Youre hearing Companies Like apple saying their supply chain is going to beaffected, lots of companies are saying that. So, despite that, the markets are shrugging it off and having a relatively good day. We also have a brand new poll out and it shows that 2020 Democratic Candidates matched up directly against donald trump in a general election when many of them do win. Bloomberg, 5142. Sanders, 5143. Biden 5343. Klobuchar beats trump, warren beats strump, 4844. Pete buttigieg with the lowest numbers in this particular poll but still beating trump handily, 4743, including the margin of error. This was taken last week. That is the brand new poll showing six leading democrats would beat donald trump in a general election in terms of the popular vote if taken today.
