MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Craig Melvin September 15, 2020

Investigation into her death stands, thats coming up in a few moments. First, the gulf coast already seeing strong winds from Hurricane Sally. We just got new information in from the National Hurricane center, a new warning. The storm heading northwest ward toward the northern gulf coast with extreme lifethreatening flash flooding likely. Were continuing to see those historic wildfires rage in the west those fires sending smoke all the way from one end of our country to the other, causing hazy skies in parts of virginia and new york if the natural disasters arent enough, scientisting are warning two glaziers are tearing loose theyve long kept scientists up at night the collapse of one of them could trigger a broader collapse that could raise sea levels by about ten feet i want to start with nbcs al roker. Hes tracking that storm al, again, we just got that new advisory from the National Hurricane center walk us through what we know right now. What we know right now, craig, is the good news is storm surge may not be as threatening as we thought. However, as you mention, that rainfall is going to be catastrophic here is the latest right now its a category one storm, 110 miles south of mobile, alabama, with 85mileperhour winds its moving northwest at two Miles Per Hour, craig. We can walk faster than that we are checking, but right now it looks like that 2mileperhour forward speed would set a new record for a slowest moving hurricane at this point. You can also notice that pink underneath the radar, those are tornado watches stretching from the alabama coastline into the florida panhandle. Here is what we look at as far as the path. It starts now its starting to make its northern turn. Heavy rain, strong winds already moving along shore, especially into alabama, parts of mississippi and the panhandle. Sally is going to stay over these warm gulf waters it doesnt look like its going to intensify yesterday it did go up to a 2 for a little while, but is back down tomorrow morning, landfall probably early wednesday morning, torrential rain continues along the coast. Then thursday into friday, this thing moves up into georgia and the carolinas, weakening into a depression but still causing a lot of rain. Here is why that slow forward speed makes such a big difference this on average of a tropical cyclones forward speed. If its moving 25 Miles Per Hour, zero to five inches can fall look at five Miles Per Hour. Keep in mind, craig, its only moving at two Miles Per Hour it could create a rain fall of 30 inches or more. So thats why were so concerned about possible historic flooding for southern alabama, western florida and major flooding on rivers you can see even once it gets away from the coast, were looking at upwards of seven to ten inches going into northern georgia and parts of western South Carolina and we got winds even though its a category 1, this can still do some damage with those winds we can see wind gusts for mobile, 93 Miles Per Hour, pensacola, 48, biloxi, 83 Miles Per Hour that means Power Outages especially along the panhandle and that small bit of alabama can see some fairly significant Power Outages with this, craig al, yesterday we talked on the show about having five named storms in the atlantic almost out of letters of the alphabet to name them. How are we seeing Climate Change affect not just this season but the storms themselves . Well, we talk about these stor storms, and the fuel for these storms is the water of the atlantic Climate Change is responsible for this warmerthanaverage water across the atlantic and right into the gulf. So that warm water provides the energy for the hurricane, rapid intensification which weve seen three times so far this season that causes at least a wind increase of 35 Miles Per Hour in 24 hours and again weve watched it yesterday sally was 60 Miles Per Hour and then it intensified up to 90100 Miles Per Hour Climate Change, for example, were in a la nina right now that la nina means were basically seeing less shear which tears apart the hurricanes, again, due to Climate Change we look out west, the storm track was the north so they didnt get much in the way of rain it has fed into everything we are seeing of these last several weeks, craig al roker, always appreciate your time. Thank you, sir appreciate you, buddy. You bet al just mentioned mobile, alabama. Morgan chesky is in mobile, the southern part of that state could face historic rainfall and flooding morgan, alabamas governor issuing that state of emergency saying bad weather is nothing to take lightly how are they getting ready there in alabama reporter craig, a lot of people woke up thinking they would be in the thick of sally right now only to realize that updated forecast and realize it is about a day away because it is such a slowmoving hurricane. Thats causing a lot of uneasiness along this stretch of the gulf coast theres a lot of space for it to shift one way or the other even though its not packing the winds we saw with hurricane laura, as al mentioned, its bringing the catastrophic rainfall thats the primary threat right now. I just got off the phone with the director of Emergency Management in mobile county. They had a briefing a short time ago. Shelters opened last night they did have people start to come in. Those numbers expected to go up through out the day. Theyre telling everyone, dont let this category 1, potentially category 2 fool you. This is not going to be the primary threat here, windwise. Its going to be the water im standing in an area in mobile where it takes just a few feet of storm surge to submerge this area. Aptly named water street is about 100 yards to my left the mobile river behind me its starting to inch up People Living along the water are already seeing the water move into the back yards this hasnt begun to have started as far as a hurricane event goes the big concern right now, where can they position these high water rescue vehicles where theyre not going to be threatened by the floodwaters because im told that First Responders are already running out of time for them to go out and help people ahead of this storm before they have to hunker down themselves and just wait this out craig. Morgan chesky in mobile, stay safe, buddy. Lets go from the bufl coast to the west coast more breaking news out west. Those fires are continuing to burn up and down the west coast. More than 5 million acres have burned so far across california, oregon, Washington State for perspectives sake, give a sense of how large an area were talking about, thats the size of connecticut and delaware combined so far at least 35 people have died from the fires. Dozens more are still missing this morning there are major air quality concerns from all of that smoke. The Oregon Health authority says 10 of all emergency room visits in the area are for asthmalike symptoms right now the smoke even affecting the skies on the other side of the country. That smoke wafting across the country to cities on the east coast as well. Nbcs Erin Mclaughlin is in oroville, california erin, this isnt the first time a lot of folks in that area have lost their homes, unfortunately. Reporter thats right, craig. As you can see, the fire has swept through this area, now pushing into plume Miss National forest but leaving behind a trail of death and destruction 15 killed in this area from that fire alone entire communities have been leveled including the community of berry creek and the home of jillian rouse, her husband justin and their three boys. This is the second time theyve lost a home to wildfires in the past two years they lost their home in the 2018 paradise fire as well. They told me they learned key lessons from that fire, that they knew when they received the alerts on their cell phones to get out of berry creek they knew they had to leave, leave quickly. They left everything behind. They told me theyre in shock. Take a listen. Its kind of becoming the new normal i dont know if it really has registered just trying to make the best of what weve got this right here is whats most important. I dont even know if im making safe decisions anymore because it feels like the fire is following us. Reporter incredibly, the family tells me theyre being trolled on social media, blamed for choosing to move to berry creek, another mountain community. The family telling me they love the fresh mountain area. Berry creek is what they could afford theyre not the only ones to have taken that decision, there were nup rouse other families from paradise that relocated to berry creek, now facing double devastation. Craig. It all seems to terribly unfair, but their perspective quite positive there Erin Mclaughlin in oroville, thank you. Were also following breaking news this morning on the killing of Breonna Taylor by louisville police. Taylor shot and killed in her apartment during a Botched Police raid six months ago now attorneys for Breonna Taylors family say they have reached a Settlement Agreement with the city of louisville. The agreement is said to be in the millions of dollars. It wasnt just about money for the family that agreement also includes Police Reforms of course, this is separate from the criminal case. Were still waiting to hear whether a grand jury has decided on possible indictments for the three officers who fired their weapons that night nbcs blayne alexander is following that one for us. Blayne, what more can you tell us about that settlement announced today . Reporter craig, certainly a Major Development when it comes to the case of Breonna Taylor. Were expecting to get more details now in less than three hours. Thats when well have a News Conference held by the attorneys for the Taylor Family. Well expect to learn more then. Again, this is something that could be one of the largest settlements around a policeinvolved shooting in the history of the city of louisville we do know so far it contains two different components the first of those is financial. As you said, it could be in the millions of dollars that were expecting to be announced, paid to the Taylor Family the other has to do with a list of Police Reforms for the department there in louisville officer accountability and the execution of warrants, the second part is so key because we know it was a noknock warrant that those three officers were trying to serve as Breonna Taylors apartment now six months ago this was tied to the civil lawsuit filed by breonnas mother this is a separate question whether the officers will Face Criminal Charges that is handled by the state attorney general according to sources speaking to nbcs laura strickler, the ag could be presenting evidence in that case as early as this week to a grand jury. Craig, to put a finer point around this, i spent time in louisville, its been more than six months since Breonna Taylor was killed everybody i spoke to from the people protesting for weeks to the attorney for the family says that is the most difficult part, the amount of time that its taken since theyve seen any sort of a Significant Development in this case again, a major update here in the case today blayne alexander, thank you for that update. Again, that News Conference set to happen in just a few hours from now we should learn more then. Meanwhile, crews arent just fighting these fires that Erin Mclaughlin just showed us. Theyre fighting rumors. One fire union called facebook a, quote, cesspool of misinformation about how the fire started ill talk to a facebook Vice President about the companys new steps to fight that misinformation and whether they go far enough. First, President Trump and joe biden are fighting for latino support, but theres a recent poll they both should probably Pay Attention to. Latino voters were asked to name a politician who shows up for their community. The top answer nobody when youre through with powering through, its time for theraflu hot liquid medicine. Powerful relief so you can restore and recover. Theraflu hot beats cold. You have to be very sharp when you deal with hispanic americans. My latinos, i love the latinos that was just part of President Trumps pitch to voters in arizona on monday. Right now both campaigns are making latino voters central to their strategy today former Vice President joe biden is in florida. The former Vice President will be speaking at a hispanic heritage month event there in florida. Nbcs Garrett Haake is covering mr. Bidens visit to florida also with us, paulo paula ramos, a host for vice news by the way, a new book thats dropping, out today, in fact its called finding latinx, in search of the voices redefining latino identity. Garrett, let me start with you what can we expect to see and hear from joe biden today . Reporter you just heard the president say he loves the latino voters. Here in florida theyre loving him back the president is performing about 15 points better among latino voters in florida than he did in 2016. In a state that tends to get decided by the margins, thats super important. Thats part of the messaging well hear from joe biden today, focused on the latino vote hell be doing that in the orlando area, part of the i4 corridor here. The cuban american vote tends to lean more towards republicans, but talking to members of the puerto rico diaspora, south and Central American voters, perhaps folks who are more likely to be unaligned voters thats who both campaignsare targeting as they battle against the 2 voters in florida who remain uncommitted in tampa, the former Vice President will have an event focused on military and veteran voters the idea here in florida is its too big, too dive verse, the Biden Campaign believes, to come in and do the trumpstyle mega rallies and throw everything at the wall they want to have a targeted approach here. I think perhaps Mission Number one will be to push back on the Trump Campaigns attacks trying to label biden as a socialist. When it comes to the latino vote, thats a very big deal, an attack that appears to have been working against the former Vice President here his advisers in florida are telling me he needs to come down, needs to push back against that aggressively. I suspect well hear that from him as soon as he gets off the plane, craig. All right Garrett Haake in tampa, thank you. Paola, i want to get into this poll that you shared on twitter. Its a Telemundo Buzzfeed poll of young latino voters they were asked to name a political figure who has shown up for the latino community. It was a landslide the number one answer, nobody and no politician comes close there. Joe biden congresswoman alexandria ocasiocortez, sanders, they hit 6 there why is that gap so glaring and so wide . Id say a couple of things. Craig, i think the first answer and the most glaring answer is because we have this conversation of where are the latino voters always 50 days before the election, always the day that hispanic heritage month is when all of a sudden politicians and campaigns start to Pay Attention to us and start to understand they need us part of what you see in that poll is that, this understanding that weve been neglected and forgotten and its only now that people start paying attention. Thats one part of it. The other part of it is theres 60 million of us in this country. You look at congress, you look at what power in politics looks like, and it doesnt look like this 38 latinas in congress, four senators that look like us thats Something Else thatsing been reflected in that poll. We dont see ourselves in power. Thats why you see so many latinos, more than ever, running for office to change that. Two very good points there. Our latest nbc news poll, mayor rift poll found in miami, heavily populated by cuban and venezuelan americans, joe biden leads by 15 in 2016 Hillary Clinton won that same area by 27 points our ellison barbertalked to biden supporters in that area. Some said that the campaign, the Biden Campaign just isnt doing enough to reach out. In fact, here is one voters view i know theres been a lot of press about being people a little concerned, a lot of hammering going on i understand that. I think the policy is correct now. Its a matter of making sure the messaging goes out, targeting those people that we do need to get out to vote. What are you hearing, paola, in your conversations with florida voters this cycle
