Recession. As well as trumps trade policy with china. Beijing this morning threatening new retaliation to u. S. Tariffs. Still, the president insists china is not to blame for the economic roller coaster here at home. Instead he is blaming the Federal Reserve and the man he appointed to lead it, jerome powell. Our team of reporters and analysts are all standing by. Lets start with msnbc correspondent ali velshi at the New York Stock Exchange at this hour. Kristen welker is with the president in new jersey. Ali, let me cross over to you. First what is triggering this toggling back and forth and wla what it means tofor people, their 401 k s this morning. Yesterday we had the fourth worst point drop in the history of the dow, the worst percentage drop for the year on these fears about a signal that there might be a recession coming. That particular signal has changed today, but thats really not the broader issue. The broader issue here is concern about this ongoing trade war with china, the acceleration of that trade war. So going into last night, we thought we were going to have another rough day on the market, and you never want to speak too soon, but what has happened overnight is two things. One, china has said it wants to meet america halfway on this trade deal. Thats a little bit of good news, because every time america escalated, china would escalate it, and last week when donald trump said, hey, were not going to impose this 10 tariff on things because he doesnt want prices to go up right before christmas, china did not say theyre not buying any more american agriculture. So theyre saying they want to meet us halfway. Thats a good sign. The other thing is we had an earnings report. Think of it like a report card that comes out four times a year for walmart. Walmart is countrys biggest retailer, so when walmart says things are okay, thats almost like a government indicator, and they go into the week and say if theyre spending money, okay, maybe the economy isnt melting down just yet. Bottom line is were expecting an economic slowdown sometime in the next year to 18 months. The concern people have is Donald Trumps escalating trade war with china going to make that worse than it otherwise would have been or bring it on faster than it otherwise would have come on . Thats the concern right now. As you said, hes blaming the feds saying they should have lowered Interest Rates. They should continue to do so. Hes in a battle with his own fed chief about this. President s always want Interest Rates low. They particularly want them low heading into an election. Were positive on the market right now. Were up about 70 points. I hate to put you on the spot with this particular question, but from where you sit and where you hear certain analysts say what actions should be taken or what actions could be taken to try to stabilize what were seeing right now . Right, so keep in mind the world is slowing. There is no question about that, anyway. Were ten years plus into an expansion. Thats the period in between recessions. Thats almost double the normal time. We might not be able to head off an economic slowdown, but perhaps aggravating it with a global trade war is not a good idea. So i think the number one thing that can happen to bring stability back to this market is for donald trump to do something that deescalates the trade war with china. His point is this is shortterm pain for longterm gain. The problem with china has to be fixed. Others say, yeah, thats true, there is a real problem with china. This isnt the actual way to fix it. So ending or degrading the trade war would probably be the single best thing for investors right now. So for that perspective, ali velshi, im going to cross over to kristen welker. She is with the president in new jersey. To that point, kristen, does the president shrug this off saying china is not the problem, saying although hong kong is an issue, its not necessarily the problem with china, it is the Federal Reserve . Are there growing concerns from your sources and what youre hearing inside the white house that this situation is dangerous for the economy . Reporter they are undoubtedly concerned about what theyre seeing, and there is no doubt about that. Publicly, however, the message is very different coming from the administration. Peter navarro, larry kudlow have been adamant that the fundamentals of the economy are strong, and they have long disputed this idea that it will slip into a deep recession. Ive been talking to larry kudlow about all of this for months. Hes defiant in arguing he thinks the economy ultimately will continue on a strong path. President trump, though, if you read his tweets yesterday, aman, and there were really a series of tweets, a tweet storm about this. He was clearly watching this very closely from here in bedminster, he didnt have any events on his public schedule, so it stands to reason he spent his time with an eye on the markets. Countries and jobs are fleeing. Prices to us have not gone up and in some cases have come down. China is not our problem, though hong kong is not helping. Our problem is with the fed. This goes to your point, what you were discussing with ali. Raised too much and too fast, now too slow to cut. He then calls that inverted yield curve, that metric that predicted yesterday that we could be heading toward a recession. Crazy, and then he said the fed is holding us back, we will win. So reading between the lines there, a lot of defiance and clearly on defense as he watched the stock market tumble yesterday. Now, what are we expecting today . Today he heads to new hampshire, a state that he lost innarrowlyn 2016. He wants to win in 2020. It has one of the lowest employment rates in the country. He is clearly going to be hammering that point home, but again, watching these headwinds very closely, because, of course, his big argument for reelection is the economy. Republicans, his close allies say they are concerned if the Economic Forecast continues to worsen that that ultimately could jeopardize his chances for reelection. But today i think we can expect him to be defiant. Well have to see if he answers questions before he departs from here in bedminster, aman. As President Trump tries to solve the hong kong problem, china is making new moves of its own. Ground video appears to show the military heading to the border of hong kong. I want to show you the tweet the president put out before we talk about the situation on the ground. The president tweeting out, if president xi would meet directly with the protesters, there would be a happy and light ending to the hong kong problem, i have no doubt. That is just within the last couple minutes. Youre on the ground there. What is the message that the Chinese Government is sending . Is there any indication, like the president suggested, that in the coming days there could be some kind of dialogue between these protesters and the chief executive of hong kong, or even the government on Mainland China . Reporter well, to this point, the protests have been leaderless. Its why theyve taken on sometimes a rather frantic momentum. Protesters ive talked to said the last time a lot of people came together like this back in 2014 for the umbrella movement, the protest leaders ended up in jail. So there was a strategic decision made this time that there wouldnt be any one face or one person in charge so there would be no one person who could be targeted. That said, they also complained that there has been no dialogue with carrie lamm, the chief executive here, the person in charge of hong kong handpicked by beijing. There is a sense that it is the Chinese Government pulling the strings here and unlikely that the Chinese Government would want to meet with protesters, either. As for taking advice from President Trump, its not something that president xi jinping is likely to do, either. If he were to issue any sort of statement, he would probably say that hong kong is a domestic affair, its an internal affair, and will be best left to be settled by china. Janis mackie frayer in hong kong for us, thank you. Heres markets editor, dia dian levin. Thank you for joining us. Lets talk about the protests as we see. The president is saying this is not to do with china, although hong kong is not particularly helping. How do you see it in terms of the way the markets are reacting to all this . The markets have a close eye on this and theyre watching. Steve eisemann, hes a fund manager famous for portraying steve carell in the big short. The real issue is how does china react to what theyre seeing in hong kong and how does that affect their negotiations on the trade war . So President Trump has inserted himself in this argument now and has tried to make himself a piece of this puzzle. Does that force a strong reaction from china and do they feel the need to crack down harder . What really makes a difference is chinas economy is slowing. They need to continue on the robust path that its been to keep people off the streets. The worry is hong kong. If that comes to china, that could slow the economy and cause big damage in china but also the rest of the economy, because china is one of the trade relations. Is there any way to insulate our economy from whats happening overseas . Is there anything this administration can do to kind of insulate us from that volatility . In a word, no. This is a thing thats been going on for a long time and people talk about businesses, the president talks about businesses and companies leaving china. Its a couple subsidiaries, pieces of companies that are moving out, somewhere where they can do shipping or manufacturing or a little piece of their business. People have been setting up supply chains in china for 20 years now, so these are set in china. There is a large swath of engineers of particular specialists in china that are not elsewhere in addition to the manufacturing hubs, in addition to all the different businesses that are on the ground there. So when people are talking about moov moving out of china, its little pieces of china. Dion, appreciate it as always. And the deep south and those i. C. E. Raids in mississippi. New information this morning in the mystery surrounding the apparent suicide of Jeffrey Epstein. A source close to the case telling our team his body has been claimed from the new york medical Examiners Office from one of the his unidentified associates. According to multiple people familiar with the investigation, epstein was taken off suicide watch before guards found him in his cell on saturday. The federal judge on the case is now requesting more information, saying epsteins first Suicide Attempt in july, quote, has never been definitively explained, and just within the past few minutes, nbc news confirming what the Washington Post first reported overnight about details on the still unpublished autopsy report, reporting that epstein suffered multiple breaks in his neck, including the hyoid bone, citing two people familiar with the findings. Stephanie gosk is following this story for us and msnbc contributor carol lang who first reported this news this morning. Carol, good to have you with us. Carol, let me start with you. I want to read a piece of your reporting in the Washington Post. You wrote, among the bones broken in epsteins neck was the hyoid bone, which in men is near the adams apple. Such breaks can occur in those who hang themselves, if i cannily if they are older, but they are more common in victims of homicide. Do you think, carol, investigators are thinking homicide is a possibility now . I think when the pathology experts had him on the table on sunday this weekend after his death, when they saw that those bones were broken, im told they took a pause and basically said, we cant decide for sure. We need to look at all the facts. Because these bones are typically indicative typically indicative of strangulation by another person. That doesnt mean thats what happened. We dont want to feed conspiracy theories. We just think you need to have all the information we can gather for you. It looks like, at least, this has put a pause essentially in making a ruling. There have been some other reports, i have to say, that has said the medical examiner is confident this looks like a suicide. Weve not heard that, but its possible thats true. Its possible that the examiner Still Believes this is more likely a suicide than not. The issue of the bones, though, because its so much more common in homicide, apparently led to the decision not to make a ruling on sunday. Stephanie, i want to ask you about this associate who claimed the body. What more have we learned about that, if anything, and do we know if epstein had any family and who this associate is who claimed the body . We dont know who he is. We know his brother lived in new york city. There are others he worked with and knew that could have claimed the body. It is interesting in light of the news about his neck that they were able to claim the body. I would imagine today this news, out there in the public is going to put enormous pressure on the medical examiner to come out with a public cause of death in light of all of the conspirathe theories that are out there, this only adds fuel to the fire. And they wanted more news about his Suicide Attempt in july. What do we know about that . This was the judge overseeing the case of Jeffrey Epstein and the center that Jeffrey Epstein was being held. That warning was facilitated by the attorney general. Before that happened, she reached out to the judge in the epstein case to notify the judge of epsteins death, although you would imagine he had already heard the news, but in an official way. Correct. The judge then responded back in a letter saying, you know, we never definitively heard what happened to epstein on the 23rd. For a passing observer, why isnt that the case . Why wasnt there a more definitive explanation for why he was found injured in his cell . There were a number of theories floated. Obviously one of them, that he tried to take his own life. Another was that he faked it to try to get tie betto a better f, and the third was that he actually had been attacked. We never heard either way what happened. And its fueling more and more speculation on line which we hope is something the judge is not paying attention to in terms of all the conspiracy theories out there. Carol, i want to ask you about some of the other reporting you guys have this morning, and that is the fight over epsteins multimilliondollar estate. What more can you tell us about who is involved in that and what is at stake . Essentially whats really worrying victims now that Jeffrey Epstein is dead is that they are denied their chance to accuse him in court, hear his defense, but essentially get to air their complaints about what happened to them at his hand. And the other route to getting sort of remuneration for their pain and suffering in the view of their lawyers is to go after his estate. And now there is a rush essentially to the banks and to the courts to try to say, i am suing this deceased man and im seeking money from his estate, 559 million estimated spread all over the globe. And our colleagues at the post have been analyzing this and saying there is going to be a long wait for those victims, a long queue of people who will be seeking money from his estate, and its unclear whether or not victims will get satisfaction. I just want to quickly Say Something else about that reporting about july 23rd. When we first reported about that, nbc actually broke that news, but when we reported about that incident, epstein had told his lawyers and authorities at the prison that he was attacked, and he had a roommate who was about four times his size. Im not saying the roommate did it, but it is fascinating to me that even after that happened, there was never an answer. Was it a Suicide Attempt that he was covering up, or was he attacked . It seems like a basic thing that the bureau of prisons should have figured out. Yeah, its incredible. Well have to wait and see if the doj and the fbi find out any answers to the questions you both are posing. Carol leonnig and stephanie gosk, thank you both.
