Tabulated or counted. And if its not counted, vote. But follow that ballot because these people theyll be lost. Theyll be gone. The numbers are incredible. This comes on the backdrop of a week of dueling Campaign Messages in a number of very important swing states. Former vp joe biden spending his time in kenosha, wisconsin, yesterday, speaking to Community Members and the family of jacob blake. The man who was shot by Police Nearly two weeks ago. While President Trump spent his trip to the city with Business Owners and Law Enforcement officials. And over in pennsylvania, while the president touted the booming stock market, joe biden focussed on the millions of americans who are struggling amid this pandemic. Our team of reporters has the latest on the trail. Josh letterman is in raleigh, North Carolina, ali vitali in wilmington, delaware, and Kelly Odonnell at the white house. First ballots being sent out this morning from North Carolina. What are you hearing from Election Officials there. Im sure theyre not talking about voting twice. Good morning. Its do or die time here in North Carolina where Election Officials are preparing for all records to be shattered as far as mailin voting. Already they have more than 618,000 absentee ballot requests that have come in. Just for comparison purposes, thats more than 16 times the number of ballots that have been requested at the same time in 2016. And Election Officials that were speaking to here on the ground say they are prepared for the volume of ballots that are going to be requested. What they were not prepared for was at the very last minute, the president to start encouraging voters here in North Carolina to send in a mailin ballot and then show up anyway at the polls to try to vote. Take a listen to what gary sims, the has of elections here in raleigh in wake county, had to tell me about whether people should try and vote twice. If youve already voted, you should not be entering the voting enclosure, period. And if youre going to try to vote again, even the act of trying to vote is a crime. Its an opportunity for him to cry out fraud. And in North Carolina, we havent had a problem with fraud. I hope and i pray that enough North Carolina voters know that you cannot mail in your ballot and then go in and cast a ballot. And the white house has been saying what President Trump meant is you should be proactive about going and making sure if you vote by mail that your ballot was actually counted. Well, the good news, stephanie, here in North Carolina, there are actually not one, but three different ways that you can find out whether your mailin ballot got to the right place and was counted. And none of those ways involves showing up on election day at a polling place and trying to cast a second vote. You can track your ballot in most states across the country just like you would trying to order a pizza or tracking a package that you deliver. No need to try to vote twice. All right. Lets turn to ali vitali. Former vp biden is set to speak on the economy today. Its very tricky because while were in a recovery, it is fragile and it is fragmented. Whats his message going to be . Imagine today, steph, that hes going to highlight that fragile and fragmented part of it because this these remarks, were told, are going to focus on the economic recession that were still in. Biden inextricably linking this economic moment with the coronavirus pandemic thats still raging on right now in this country. Biden has repeatedly said and will again say today that trumps mishandling of the Coronavirus Crisis is not just leading to more deaths across the country but also leading to the economic trouble that we still find ourselves in. Expect him to use a lot of those labor statistics numbers that came out this morning that show the Million People who are back in the job market but the millions of people who are still out of it. And, steph, all of this comes against the backdrop of what you laid out at the top of your show. This is really the first week where its starting to feel like a typical general election. Both candidates out on the campaign trail making their pitch to voters. My colleagues have a great piece that describes it as campaigns that are happening in two different realities. You have two parallel tracks of campaigning where joe biden is making the economic recession and coronavirus pandemic the centerpiece of his pitch to voters, whereas trump is trying to turn the page on coronavirus and instead painting the economic moment as one of a booming stock market. Something that weve heard him do for months and months, although right now, the economic reality does not match anything that the president is saying. And i think its also important to note that it feels like the general election right now, but i think that were going to start seeing a little more travel, a few more of the typical hallmarks we expect to see out of a general election. Joe biden has said he hopes to be on a campaign trail doing so safely but campaigning and we already know hes going to be in michigan marking labor day as a point we start seeing these candidates ramp up travel but doing it safely. Always good to remind our audience, the stock market is not the economy. And we cannot look at the coronavirus or its Economic Impact in the past tense. We are still living in it. Kelly, despite pushback from Election Officials, President Trump is sticking to his advice to mail in your ballot and vote in person. Double it up. Which is not even legal. Can you explain to us what is going on inside the white house . How are they explaining this . Well, steph, you get the officials who are supporting the president , whether its the press secretary, the chief of staff saying the president is not giving people a howto on committing Election Fraud. Theyre trying to separate themselves and the president from his own remarks. But it appears the president is trying to continue to sow confusion, doubt, uncertainty about the election process. By saying and reminding people if their ballot is sent in the mail, they lose some physical connection to it and, therefore, go in person and try to vote. He doesnt seem to be so concerned about the rules of voting but more about the atmosphere of this Voting Period which, for many people who will get absentee ballots or be able to vote in person early, thats going to be coming up within the next couple of weeks. So it is an immediate concern, and its really about the president trying to instill questions about will this be a Fair Election . Almost foaming the runway in advance of the crash in order for the president to try to Say Something isnt right about this election. He was asked about, would he accept the results in an interview with a local reporter while he was traveling in pennsylvania, a battleground state. And he said hopefully they would accept the results and that he hopes that will be on the night of november 3rd. We all know it may take longer given the number of additional ballots that we expect to be in mailin form as opposed to inperson voting. We dont yet know how the count will go. Steph . Yes, Election Officials have told us, we just heard from tom ridge the other day. Expect this to be voting season, not just election night. I want to bring in our next guest who said the president s idea to vote twice is an awesome one. Its an awesome one if youre looking to go to jail. Michigan attorney general dana nelson joins us now. Dana, help us understand this. The president says mail in your ballot and then go check and vote in person if it hasnt been counted. First of all, can you even do that . Can you even check and see if your vote has been counted . What would the process be . And isnt this whole thing illegal . Well, to answer that question firstly, to intentionally vote twice, not just in the state of michigan in any state in the union, y thats illegal. Here in my state, its both a state felony, its a fouryear offense, and its also a federal felony. Its a fiveyear offense. But the thing that i want to remind voters is you dont have to go to the polls to see if your absentee ballot was received by the clerk. Nearly every state in the country, you can check online with your secretary of state to ensure that your ballot was received by your local clerk. And it just sows the seeds of confusion in order to make these kinds of statements. And, worse, really what its doing is its incentivizing people to commit crimes. So you really follow the advice of this president at your own risk because you could potentially end up with a felony conviction and doing jail time. So does the president s advice to people make your job a whole lot harder . Yeah, it actually really does. And its very concerning to me. And, of course, i hear the president routinely provide advice that involves illegal acts. We just heard him recently actually talk about sending the military, federal agents, sheriffs to the polls in order to intimidate voters. That is that violates numerous state and federal offenses, as well as constitutional concerns. But we hear him do it all the time. When he first came on the campaign trail, he started talking about how russia should start illegally hacking Hillary Clintons emails. This is what weve known from this president from the very beginning. But, yeah it makes the job of people like myself and our secretary of state that are working so hard each and every day to ensure the integrity of this election. Yeah, it makes it more difficult. But i think that the public should know that there are absolutely mechanisms in place to ensure that no one is permitted to actually vote twice. And if you try, well catch you and charge you. What is michigans game plan to count all these additional mailin ballots that you havent gotten in previous elections . We know that the president doesnt want this to be voting season. We know he wants on election day to find out the final results. How are you handling this massive amount youre going to get . Certainly we have an unprecedented number of people who have applied to vote absentee. We saw that in the primaries. Weve never had so many people vote absentee. Another element of that here in michigan is that this is the first time in a president ial election that we will have no reason absentee voting. The voters passed the ballot proposal in 2018 to make that so. So, yes, its going to be overwhelming. Ill say the republicans that control the state legislature have made it very difficult because they are not, for instance, ballots to be counted if they were not received by the clerk after 8 00 p. M. On election day. Of course, we know since the postmaster general is doing everything he can to slow down the mail, you know thats a concern. But some, you know, in terms of counting the votes, yes, we can assure that each and every vote that is received on time is going to be counted. It might take a little longer than usual, but each one of those votes will be counted. Again, each vote will be tracked and we have mechanisms in place to ensure that Election Fraud does not occur. Im working hand in hand with my secretary of state and my governor each and every day. We have, you know, a group that weve put together and we meet every week just to work on this issue to make certain that everyone in the state who is eligible has the opportunity to vote and that each and every vote is counted. Ive got to ask you before we go, though. Last week there was a robocall in your state encouraging people not to do mailin voting. A robocall. How do you counter that . Firstly, were investigating that case and hope to find out whoever was behind that illegal robocall. But even if you do even if you do, the damage is done, right . People answered that phone that seemed like an official call to them and theyre taking that advice. And that advice is misinformation. Well, the best way to counter misinformation is with as much proper education as possible. So were pulling out all the stops and between myself and other state officials, we are going to be putting as much time, energy, effort and resources as possible into providing proper information and education to every voter in this state so that they know exactly how to vote, what is legal, what is not legal and how they can make sure that their vote counts this november. Flooding the zone with the truth. Amen to that. Thank you so much for joining me. I appreciate it. I need to go back to the white house now. Now weve got new reporting from the atlantic about why the president canceled a trip to visit fallen american soldiers in france back in 2018. At the time, the president blamed the bad weather for the canceled visit. But as the atlantic is now reporting, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the decision, quote, in a conversation with senior Staff Members on the morning of the scheduled visit, trump said, quote, why should i go to that cemetery . Its filled with losers. He also called fallen marines suckers. The report also narrows in on the president s criticism of the late senator john mccain saying that when mccain died in 2018, the president was furious when he saw flags lowered at halfstaff and said, quote, were not going to support that losers funeral. Kelly odonnell back with me. Kelly, this is extraordinary. What is the white house saying about it . Well, you can tell the white house is concerned, and certainly the campaign is concerned by the ferocious response trying to defend the president. Perhaps more than any other controversy that has related to the president over these four years, the response has been quick and it has been overwhelming to try to tamp this down. They know that they need military support. The support of veterans, an important voting bloc, and they are defending the president. Now the word loser is something the president uses in his public life and so it is, for many people, easier to imagine him using it in private. Now the specifics of this case, i was covering on our nbc team that paris trip in 2018. And there was weather and they did not fly the helicopter. The question was, could the president go some other way . He sent his chief of staff at the time, john kelly, a retired marine general, and the joint chiefs chairman at the time, general dunford to go in his place. They went by motorcade. The white house at the time said they could not take the president by motorcade because it could be as much as three hours in a route they had not fully planned in a foreign country where they didnt have all of the resources to protect the president in the motorcade. The president being different than even senior staff. So thats what we were told at the time. Theyre also repeating that. What really counts here is, though, what did the president say . And thats separate from official movements and decisions about weather. And thats the reporting the atlantic has that behind the scenes, the president was quoted saying this. The president has denied it. He said he was respectful of john mccain. Theres a lot of evidence to the contrary thats in the public domain, but they are pushing back forcefully. The president in his own words and his senior staff. Steph . Kelly, thank you. That story, i have a feeling, is going to get uglier. Were going to leave it there. We have a lot to talk about today. The low point came on april 14th when only 87,000 passengers flew nationwide. Down from 2. 5 million flying each day before the pandemic. Passengers slowly returned over the summer. Today its expected to be the busiest day yet with 900,000 passengers nationwide. And checkpoints now look a bit different. Plexiglass to separate officers and passengers. Stickers on the floor to keep passengers six feet apart. And new selfservice kiosks that check your i. D. , then match it to your Airline Ticket record. Tsa chief admiral david pikosky. You walk up, takior credential and insert it into the machine here. Theyll ask you to bring your mask down. The machine will capture an image. You can see it on the screen. And then my credential comes out. I take it. No touch between the officer and me. Also rolling out, a 434 airports, new software in the fullbody scanners that reduces the need for patdowns. New antimicrobial bins and more ct scanners that allow officers to manipulate images of whats inside your carryon bag to verify its not a threat. Reducing the need to do bag checks. If a tsa officer is going to reach into somebodys bag and then reach into my bag, are they using the same gloves . Theyll change gloves. If you ask them to change the gloves, they will or theyll sanitize the gloves. Officers must also change gloves for every body check. In any way, is security being compromised because of us Wearing Masks and because of the plexiglas . No, its not being compromised in any way whatsoever. Every one of these new Technology Advancements we have, first and foremost, improves security and improves security a lot. And secondarily, as we look at technology, not only will it improve security but also the passenger experience. Reporter despite the pandemic, while passenger volume is down, 75 , the ratio of gun confiscations per passenger have tripled. And 80 of them are loaded. Most passengers claim they simply forgot the gun was in a bag. But the first offense comes with a federal fine of up to 4100 plus the possibility of local criminal charges. Yeah, can be a very expensive proposition to forget you have a gun in your bag. One other note if youre coming to the airport, yes, masks are required just to get through a tsa checkpoint. The airlines require them as well to board a plane. Airports require them. So if you are walking through an airport and you decline to wear a mask, theres a very good chance Airport Police will either ask you to wear one or escort you out. Back to you. Wear one or hit the pavement. Tom, thank you. Joining us to dig into all of this, dr. Ashish jha, the brandnew dean of the school of Public Health at brown university. Doctor, always good to have you here, especially heading into this weekend where there are lots of people traveling and potentially gathering. I want to start with the ihme estimate. This number is mindblowing. 410,000 total u. S. Deaths by january 1st. Wearing masks could drop that number way down. What does that tell you about where we are and where were headed . Yeah, stephanie, thank you for having me on. As we enter Labor Day Weekend, were still generating 40,000, 50,000 cases a day. Thats twice the number as we entered memorial day weekend. So i am worried about the fall. And i am worried that unless we get everybody Wearing Masks, well have schools open, colleges open, we are going to see more cases. And we will see more deaths. And so im worried about the fall. But a lot of this we can prevent by doing the basic Public Health stuff weve been talking about for months. This week, the cdc told states that they need to be ready for a vaccine by early november. Coincidentally when election day is. And dr. Anthony fauci says he believes a vaccine approval will not be political. Do you actually believe that . Well, i think we all hope it is not, right . Vaccines are so important, not just for this pandemic, where, of course, its essential, but also in other diseases. We have to make sure its not political. I think given some of the actions of the fda over the last few months with convalescent plasma and hydroxychloroquine, we are worried but as long as we let the scientific process drive it and fda scientists and advisers make the decision and not the political leadership, i do think we can get through this product intact. But, of course, its hard not to be a little bit concerned given some of the behaviors of some of the political appointees over the last couple of months. That behavior, the misinformation out there and so much anxiety has a lot of people, in fact, twothirds of americans in a new poll by Morning Consult say they wont get a vaccine if it becomes available. How concerned are you that even if we have one, people wont take it . Yeah, i am very concerned and this is why weve got to do this right. I believe the scientists were working on the vaccine have been doing a fabulous job. I feel like the scientific process, so far, has had great integrity. I plan, assuming the rest of it goes as i hope it will, and the data come out showing both safety and effectiveness, i plan to get vaccinated. I plan to have my family get vaccinated when the appropriate time arrives. And so i want americans to feel confidence in the scientific process. But weve got to make sure the political leaders do not undermine that process. I remain concerned about that, and i think well have to call it out if we see that kind of behavior. Whats your advice going into this Labor Day Weekend . Were hearing advice that College Students shouldnt head home because we dont want to risk them giving it to their parents if theyve been exposed. Look, i think were all getting tired of this pandemic, and i completely understand. Certainly people wanting to enjoy the last sort of big official end of summer. What ive been saying to people is get out. Go outside. Go to the beach. Go to parks. Have a small Backyard Barbecue with some small number of friends, but avoid the indoor gatherings. Gotten to a bar afterwards or indoor dining, certainly not packed ones afterwards. Thats where weve gotten into trouble in the past. So i think people can have an enjoyable labor day. In terms of College Students. I agree with dr. Faucis recommendation on this. Its really important, as kids have come back to college, not to head home this weekend if they can avoid it. Just given that risk of spread to parents and elderly grandparents that could be very deadly. And fraternity parties, time to cancel them. Doctor, thank you. Always good to see you. Especially as we head into a big weekend. Next new numbers out this morning show the lowest Unemployment Rate since march, but one of the highest in modern American History. And a divide between the haves and havenots is only getting wider. The new group of americans finding themselves in food bank lines. Is. Another lifechanging technology from abbott. So you dont wait for life. You live it. Were following breaking news on the economy right now. We just got the latest jobs report showing nearly 1. 4 million jobs were brought back into the economy in the month of august. This is not creating new jobs. This is a return of jobs lost. The Unemployment Rate dropping to 8. 4 . Thats a positive. We are in recovery territory. And after a very rough day in the markets yesterday, right now markets are up about 150 points. And while the administration continues to claim we are in some sort of super v recovery, many laidoff workers are still seeing delays to their unemployment benefits. Theyre still not getting paid anything and theres Major Companies out there warning furloughs are ahead. The demand is also increasing, think about this, at food banks. With an estimated 11 of u. S. Households reporting that they didnt have enough to eat in the previous week. According to an analysis of the federal data from july. This as home evictions and foreclosures are picking up pace and more are struggling to pay their bills. For many americans, this recovery could be getting worse. Joining us now, New York Times tax and economics reporter, jim tankersley. Hes also the author of the riches of this land. Jim, what jumps out to you from this jobs report because when i think about people facing evictions at the same time as hamptons homes are now renting for 75,000 and 100,000 a month through the next year, this to me is the ultimate have and havenots. Were absolutely seeing a have and havenots story in the economy. The jobs report confirmed that the increase for the havenots is slowing. Its great news that the economy still added jobs in august, but the rate of new job increases now is steadily declining. And this is a worry because the economy has left behind a lot of workers particularly nonwhite workers who have been slow to recover. When a president talks about this super v recovery, what do you actually see because, yes, the stock market is going well. For people who own homes, for people who can work from home. But for a huge portion of this country, what does it really look like. I think for the huge portion of the country, this looks like what even the u. S. Chamber of commerce has started to call a kshaped recovery where the well off are seeing increases going up and everyone else, or the sort of more marginalized workers are not seeing things get better at all. If you can work from home, if your job is relatively secure right now, you actually might be doing better than you ever have. Youre getting a steady paycheck and youre able to, you know, do a lot of what you were able to do prepandemic, even though there are some things closed off to you. If you are someone struggling with child care because schools arent open, particularly for women, black workers, hispanics, all of their employment rates are higher and they are the ones particularly vulnerable for Food Insecurity and theyre not getting that same support from the federal government that they had earlier in this crisis. Were starting to see a lot of stories about the new faces of people seeking assistance. People who had sixfigure jobs six months ago, sixfigure jobs and now theyre going to food banks. Yet the stock market has never been higher. How do we square these very different pictures . Well, i think part of whats going on is that the stock market reflects the performance of large publicly traded companies, which are many times doing really well right now. If your amazon, for example, this has been a boon, this entire pandemic experience. Whereas if youre a Small Business owner or someone who worked for a Small Business or someone who worked in an industry thats been hit much harder than some of the big firms on the exchanges, then you really are totally out of luck. And this is not just a small amount of differentials here. There are huge divides between whos doing well and who is not. The stock market is reflecting the experience of the people at the top and the experience of the companies at the top. Yesterdays losses notwithstanding, whereas what we see at the bottom end in the food banks and everywhere else is the experience of people who are struggling just to get by with not a lot of relief in sight. Theres mounting evidence in this jobs report of permanent job losses in the economy which could lead to the sort of scarring for workers we saw after the last recession. If youre amazon or walmart, youre actually benefiting from some of that permanent job loss. Think about all those Small Businesses that are now shut down, and that business is shifting to those big box stores. Youve got a recent piece in the Washington Post titled trump was too focused on white men to make the economy truly great. He could have induced a generation defining boom. He chose not to. Walk us through that because before the coronavirus, it wasnt just white men who were doing well. We saw more women in the workforce. We saw black unemployment at record lows. Granted, still higher than white unemployment, but was it really just a winning economy for the white guy . No, well, the piece is an excerpt and adaptation from my book, the riches of this land, the untold true fstory of the american middle class. Trump inherited an economy after ten years of expansion that started to do well for American Workers and particularly for the marginalized workers. What we know is that you need low unemployment and strong Economic Growth for a long time to help pull everyone up and into the middle class. Trumps actual Job Performance in terms of rates of change, Economic Growth, the fall in the black Unemployment Rate, it was actually very comparable to Barack Obamas second term, george bushs second term. And what i naurg that piece and in the book is that trump did not deliver on these promises to repatriate millions of jobs from china to bring all these factory jobs back from mexico and that he did not deliver a sustainable economy that grows for the middle class. The only way to do that, what we know from American History, is breaking down the barriers that hold back women, hold back men of color, immigrants from actually doing their best and contributing the most to the economy and if trump focused on that, the argument in the book is we could have had a more sustainable, much bigger middle class boom in this country. We both know the stock market is not the economy. However, its not just wealthy investors who own stocks. Public pensions own an enormous amount of stocks. Were talking firefighters, teachers. People who are dependent on their 401 k s, their retirement plans. The president is arguing that the stock market will tank if hes not in office. Is there any evidence, any credibility to support that statement . I dont think that we should try to predict what the stock market is going to do based on an election and i dont know that is something driving a lot of voters choices in the polls. But ive talked to some good sources of mine in washington this week who have suggested the opposite. That perhaps markets think that if biden wins there will be more fiscal stimulus, which is the thing markets love in a time of a downturn. And that they might be pricing that in. Might be part of the reason why the market is doing so well right now. So i think the president is making threats that he has no way of knowing if theyre true, and im not sure if that is the best economic argument in this moment in the country. Thank you so much for joining me this morning. Always good to have you. Congratulations on your new book. I want to turn back now to that new stunning reporting from the atlantic that President Trump called americans who died in war losers and suckers during a trip he had in paris in 2018. The report also includes disparaging remarks about the late senator john mccain who was a prisoner of war. I want to bring in a really impressive young man to react to this. Jordan kennedy. Hes a gold star son. He joins me now. His father charles was killed by a roadside bomb in iraq in 2006 when jordan was just 7 months old. Jordan, youre a 14yearold boy. You watch the news. You follow twitter. Whats your reaction today to this report that the president spoke about Fallen Heroes calling them losers and suckers . Well, honestly, i dont think he should be saying that to many military families who have honestly risked everything for this country and that he should be appreciative and not criticizing them when he hasnt even been he doesnt know what its like to go to war. He hasnt been to war. And everybodys families, if they are alive or not, are still heroes. They risk their lives for the country to protect the citizens, and that is donald trump included. When he was a citizen and still now. And he needs to be on their side and that everybody all military families have sacrificed so much and the people who fight are heroes. Jordan, the president often watches morning tv, cable news. Assuming hes watching right now, what would you like to say to him . Well, i would like to say that you shouldnt be criticizing any family military families or military people that have died for the country. You are supposed to be on their side. You are their commander in chief. And you need to be more respectful. Jordan, thank you so much for joining me today. I really appreciate you joining us. I really in sharing your thoughts. I know its really hard. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Thats a lot. A gold star son. He lost his dad when he was 7 months old. I want to move on now. This morning, seven Police Officers involved in the in an arrest have been suspended with pay. The case were talking about is facing new scrutiny after the prude family released this edited bodycam video of an encounter. Nbcs kathy park is in rochester digging into this story for us. Hey, steph, good morning to you. So i had the opportunity to sit down with the brother of daniel prude yesterday. Joe prude. And he told me they were very close. They just have a threeyear age gap. They grew up in the chicago area, but joe prude planted roots here in the rochester area. When i asked him about the footage, he was extremely distressed. He said his brother deserved a lot more respect and he believes all the officers involved should be prosecuted. Heres more from our conversation. It was a coverup. They knew what they did was wrong and they couldnt bring forth themselves to acknowledge the wrong that was placed by their city agents. They couldnt say nothing. They couldnt even acknowledge my family. And there are a lot of reports out there questioning the mental state of daniel prude at the time of the arrest. And we are in front of the Police Precinct here and, obviously, its a very tense situation in the community of rochester and you hear a woman behind me just expressing her frustration. And her just disappointment with how this has all been handled. As far as the investigation goes, the Attorney Generals Office is taking the lead on this. Several agencies have launched their own internal review. And the big question here, steph, is why it took so long because, keep in mind, this incident took place march 23 rd. Here we are in september. Everybody wants to know why are things just not adding up . The police chief came out earlier this week saying that he wants an internal and criminal investigation. They suspended the seven officers with pay, but theres still a lot of holes and gaps. But the ag is taking the lead and hopefully will have more answers. Right now they hadnt released any sort of timeline on when well have those answers. Steph . Kathy, take us back to the beginning. How exactly did this incident occur . So it stems back to march 23rd and not too far from here. Rochester is a relatively smallknit community. And everything is just within driving distance. And, you know, it all stemmed from this call from to 911 from daniel prudes brother joe prude. And he called saying that his brother was acting erratically. He called 911 for help. And then the officers responded, but then this body cam footage, which was released this week after a foia request by the family, sparked a lot of outrage in this community because it showed exactly how everything played out. The mayor said that when at the time, she didnt know the full extent of the story, and actually was august 4th when she got wind of exactly what happened. But it did take some time for her to come out yesterday and publicly announce this suspension of the seven officers but said there are still so many questions surrounding the body cam footage and the ags office will be digging into this closely. So many questions. Its time to get some answers. Kathy, thank you. Coming up next as the election season heats up, a focus on something we can all use, not just a little, but a whole lot more of. Civility. A prominent republican and democrat from a major swing state join me on how there can be such a thing as healthy disagreement. Remember that . I had shingles. Horrible. A young thing like me . [camera man] actually anyone 50 or over is at increased risk for shingles. The pain, the burning my husband had to do everything for weeks. And the thing is, theres nothing you can do about it [camera man] well, shingles can be prevented. Shingles can be whaaat . [camera man] prevented. You can get vaccinated. Frank they have shingles vaccines whaaat . Thats what i said. Were taking you to the doctor. Not going through that again. [camera man] you can also get it from your pharmacist talk to your doctor or pharmacist about getting vaccinated. Time flies in a time of crisis. 60 days until election day, and were more divided than ever. A new poll finds majorities of republicans, independents and democrats all say that the politics, despite this pandemic, got less civil over the summer. And on a scale from 0 to 100, with 100 being close to a civil war, voters gave our current climate a score of 73. 2. And things are even more tense in swing states, like michigan, a state President Trump won by just over 10,000 votes now showing joe biden with a steady lead there in post convention polling. I want to bring in Editorial Page Editor for the detroit news nolan finley and steven henderson, also a Pulitzer Prize winner who now hosts detroit today, on wdet radio. Together these two gentlemen created the much needed civility project. We got to start with civility. Steven, your states former republican governor rick snyder, my favorite twitter handle, one tough nerd, just endorsed joe biden. He said hell bring civility bac back. Things are gotten worse this summer. You would think a pandemic would bring us together. What gives, nolan . I want to say steven is the only Pulitzer Prize winner in this couple, so congratulate him. We have over the last few years in this country, particularly in states like michigan, where there is a great divide, we have forgotten how to talk with each other and all we can do is scream at each other. And we havent taken the time to figure out why the other person thinks and feels the way they do, just intent on converting them to our point of view. Thats the point of the great lakes civility project that steve and i are involved with. So, steven, what are you going to do . This state of the world that nolan laid out, thats where we are, how are you going to solve it . We talk about a couple of different principles that we think helped people relate to each other without being disagreeable. One of them is listening, really listening to each other. Not just not talking anthonying aboanthony i and thinking what am i going to say, trying to identify with where theyre coming from, we talk about the idea of understanding that people are more than the sum of their politics. Right . One of the things that nolan and i have done really successfully is get to know why the other person believes the things that they believe. Where does that come from . What are the experiences they had that lead them to the beliefs that they have had. And when you do it that way, i think it is a lot easier to avoid some of the antipathy that we see in the political arena right now. All right, well, nolan what steven is saying makes perfect sense theoretically. Lets talk about where we are. Were in a health crisis, in an economic crisis. Do we really expect that people are going to turn the page now, and be more thoughtful and start listening at a time when you got life and death on the line . Well, it is essential they do. We have important problems to solve, at the community level, at the national level. If we arent talking with one another, if we dont learn that steve said to listen, if we dont stand back from this great divide, and try to figure out some practical solutions, i mean, we arent advocating that everybody has to agree. Efb has everyone has to have the same opinion. We dont, for a decade now, we have been fighting, we have been arguing, we have drastically Different Solutions to the problems of our community, our state, our nation, but we have learned to talk about those in a civil manner, walk away friends and come back to talk again. I think thats the only way were going to get to where we need to be in this country. Yeah, but, steven can you do that at a time with so much disinformation out there . We cant have a discussion on whether we agree on something when there is not a basic set of facts as a framework. Yeah, i mean, there is no question that the environment right now is toxic for this kind of exchange and thats why one of the things we emphasize is that one on one inner personal exchange you can block out some of what is going on around you, where you cannot have social media in your ear the whole time, you know, ratcheting up antipathy. What were focusing on is the idea and the opportunity for people to interact with the people closest to them, people in their communities, people in their families, people at their jobs, and to actually focus on something other than what they disagree on as a way to get to a civil way to disagree. And, you know, like nolan said, you know, were not shy about disagreeing. The two of us really get after each other. And there is often passion and there is sometimes anger. But you got to have more than that in order to be able to continue the dialogue in a way that produces solution. Well, i want to continue this dialogue with the two of you. Unfortunately, gentlemen, im out of time. You both know how tv works. I want you both to come back. I always welcome respectful, educated disagreements. Gentlemen, thank you. That wraps up this hour.
