Weekend of holiday golf, the nation remains on pace to reach 100,000 domestic deaths as a result of the covid19 pandemic. Not to mention, the economic carnage of reopen nation is supposed to fix. This pandemic has certainly been transformative, even if all of the ripple effects are yet to be fully realized, but the impact on our electoral system is intangible. The Washington Post reporting saturday nearly 30 states have opted voting rules in response to this pandemic. Laying the foundation for largescale voting by mail in a way never seen before. This, of course, has wrinkled President Trump who is not only attack mailin voting, but also those democratcontrolled states that have expanded all slated to expand the practice ahead of november. This morning, he even took time away from his golfing weekend to tweet, quote. Adding that proponents will, quote, trying to use covid for this scam. Joining me now on the phone is chairmanwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, representative karen bass of california. Madam chairwoman, how do you respond to the president saying mailin voting is going to be a historic rigged election . Well, i think its fascinating. First of all, he votes by mail. Second of all, voting by mail has always been a republican strategy to win elections. Now we got wise to voting by mail several years ago. Now that its picking up, all of a sudden, its criminal. But, also, basically what he is saying is that people should go ahead and risk their lives. He doesnt really care. That is certainly what happened in wisconsin. But given the death rate and the fact that we are on the verge of 100,000 americans dead, he clearly is not concerned with the life of americans and that is supposed to be his number one job as commander in chief, keeping us all safe. Now the house has passed another stimulus bill in the senate under mcconnell just left and went on the memorial weekend break and has not even taken it up, even though they are continuing to move for a federal judge confirmations that the president nominates. What do you see happening in terms of the new stimulus bill that the house just passed with the black caucus that you chair having input in and wanting more . And what do you see about bringing more equality to what is happening . The figures that we are seeing in terms of blacks and people of color in terms of how the pandemic has impacted them, both in terms of health and in terms of Business Loans and aid has been alarming to say the least. Well, absolutely. And i believe what is needed is equity, because any time you have a situation where you have clusters of extremely disproportionate people dying like you do, i mean, essentially the death rate for africanamericans is three times our population. Any time you have a situation like that, you need to go immediately into that area with an intervention. And so i know that they know that. But the president has said too much testing increases the rates, and now he wants to even fudge the death rate because he wants to say, maybe not all of those people really died from covid19. He has mismanaged this from day one and its resulted in excess deaths. The richest country in the history of the world should never be sitting on the verge of 100,000 dead americans in less than three months. Its shameful. Do you see the president is trying to rush before we are safe back to normal, back to going to procedures such as work in some places . He called on houses of worship to be open today, though most that ive been able to monitor, at least those that i am able to monitor, did not do so. Why this rush by the president to put america back before the Health Experts had said it is safe . Well, i mean, i think they have been pretty clear in saying that they understand that a lot of people are going to die. I mean, he wants us to celebrate the fact that the death rate isnt higher. So while we are on the verge of this, he is out playing golf. Obviously it is not critical to him. I think if there is a strategy at all, it might be the strategy that we need to just go ahead and expose as many people as we can to the virus because we know the vast majority of the people that are infected are asymptomatic. I think they are gambling on that. That is if there is any strategy to this at all. And the idea that you would risk american lives with a strategy like that is horrific and im not sure what is worse, a strategy like that or no strategy at all. Yeah. I note that i at least thought since he was encouraging houses of worship to reopen a day that he was going to attend one. He went golfing. So much for consistency on his part. Well, i mean, i think that is his church. But i also think that the reason why he is doing this specifically with churches is to give something to his base, to the evangelicals that reverend barber would argue are not evangelicals. The polls show biden ahead. Are you comfortable with the polls . What are you hearing from your constituents . What are you hearing from Congressional Black Caucus members from their constituents . After 2016, i will never be comfortable with polls, but i do have my faith in the American People that they are just not going to let him get away with the way he has handled things over the last three and a half years. I have said before that if we dont get this right in november, we are going to be in a mess for two generations, but now i say this is a vote for our survival, this is a vote that is life and death because he clearly is not concerned with black lives. All right. Thank you, congresswoman karen bass. Sorry for the technical problems but thank you for coming on by phone. Let me say the trump 2020 campaign kicked off a 1 Million Dollar digital ad blitz this weekend following former Vice President s quote, you aint black comment. The Trump Campaign are selling tshirts with that quote emblazoned on front of that tshirt. Simone is joining us now. Thank you for being with us. Always happy to be here, rev. Your response to the Trump Campaign trying to splot, if i can use that term, the statement made by Vice President biden that he has subsequently said he shouldnt have made that statement or said it in the way he said it. You know, reverend sharpton, frankly, its despicable, its disgusting and its a distraction. The reality is that while the Trump Campaign is trying to drum up all of these conspiracy theories, Vice President biden on the other hand, has not only talked about and engaged with the Africanamerican Community about the issues that are most important to them, he has put forth a comprehensive plan, a plan that will serve as a foundation for policies on what he would do when he becomes president and how he would govern. Donald trump, meanwhile, he has he championed the racers bir Birther Movement against president obama and dont forget charlotte, North Carolina. He called african countries ahole countries. He disparaged chicago and baltimore, on down the list. Not only has donald trump hurt the Africanamerican Community with his words, he has failed to provide for the Africanamerican Community with his policy. Just today on twitter i know everybody is not on twitter, rev, but while donald trump was trying to take credit for an hbcu policy that was recently passed in congress, congresswoman adams from North Carolina had to come in and correct him saying that was my bill you did nothing for. Right. This election, reverend, is really a choice between who has a plan for our folks in this country, who has a record on delivering, on a recovery act, on truly delivering for peoples lives. We are upon 100,000 deaths in this country from the coronavirus. The majority of those deaths are africanamerican folks. Africanamerican unemployment is 14 now in this country given the economic crisis we are in. Latino unemployment is even higher. What has President Trump, his campaign, his administration, done specifically to address that . Nothing. He is blocking testing and health care p. M. I. Im a little revved up. This is a distraction. Vice president spoke to his comments on the Breakfast Club and apologized and said he shouldnt have been so cavalier but we need to move on and taupe about the issues that are at stake here as congresswoman karen bass was talking about earlier. I said on the record that i felt it was inappropriate and i did see that he did come and say it was cavalier and apologized. I think the substance of what saying is a substance many of us had raised in the campaign about what is the agenda . You have this 22page lift every voice agenda and you said its a living document. So the campaign, are you still saying its a living document and youre welcoming people to come on and add to what or at least absolutely, reverend. Look. I think we have come up with some very good solid policy as it relates to Small Business and ensuring that Small Businesses, specific the Small Businesses with less than 50 employees, are moved to the front of the line when it comes to the ppe program. Majority of africanamerican Small Businesses have less than 50 employees. We have a plan for Wealth Creation in the Africanamerican Community. I was informed by a number of different conversations that we have had. Criminal justice reform, health care. Absolutely, we welcome folks for feedback. Vice President Biden is not just interested in platitudes and putting together plans for the sake of plans, but he is interested in ensuring that when he is elected president , we have a comprehensive road map how we are going to govern. You do understand i want to note we do talk specifically in the plan, though, about things that he would do as president and i hear folks saying, we need an agenda. Our response is we have given you an agenda. Please now give us feedback. Now, you do understand, though, how some of us, it is our duty to push and get a lot done, particularly when you get the history of the Democratic Party that many of us felt rejoyed more support and we got in the Africanamerican Community. This is historic. It goes back to the 80s when reverend jackson ran for president. In 04, i said that democrats were acting like elephants with donkey coats on. So this is not new and not personal to joe biden. When i met you, you were a young activist. Now youre still a young activist, but a little slightly older. All of us have this feeling that we want to see some tangible. We want something concrete because of the investment as every Constituency Group does. The investment of votes mean youre investing because you want your interests addressed and you want something solid for your participation. I agree with you, reverend, which is why i believe we are the first democratic nominee to put forth a competitive plan for specific the Africanamerican Community in a general election. Our plan did not come out the primary. A lot of plans in the primary and people put forth plans in the primary and make the operatives call a general election pivot. To be clear, black voters are a key part of our general election plan. Young voters are a key part of our general election plan. I think we putting money where our mouth is here. The Vice President hears you. We hear the concerns of voters across the country when it comes to where are the policies that speak directly to our community . We have put forth a competiti comprehensive document. We thought what needed to be addressed given the historic devastation has gripped countries across the country but the africanamerican and latino communities especially. So, yes, we welcome your feedback. I challenge anyone to say Vice President biden doesnt have a plan when we have a person in the white house who has failed to deliver for the Africanamerican Community, who, in his campaign, said i ask the Africanamerican Community what do you have to lose . The answer is our lives. Our livelihood is the question. The question is for many is not trump but the question is turnout and making sure people vote. This is a discussion ive had with former Vice President biden both privately and on this show and you and i have remembered it. Youve heard it from me. And that is that some of us are wanting to see a black woman on the ticket as Vice President. Yes. He said on this show that there are more than one black and women of color that is being considered. We are hearing this week that val demings and Stacey Abrams and other names have been touted. I dont know whether they have been vetted or not. You want to make shus and tell me who has an inside track . Are we going to have a black Vice President ial candidate . I had no news to make for you today, reverend. I do want to echo and underscore something im smiling but im serious. You know i want to see that, but go ahead. I know you want to see it. I want to be clear that we have heard the concerns of voters across the country and we have heard the concerns of black women, many of whom have written numerous letters to the campaign. We hear your concern. As Vice President biden noted on your program, there are a number of africanamerican women that he is considering. I dont have any news to break for you today. I will not be acknowledging who is or who is not on that list but i can tell you we hear you. Vice President Biden, he did an interview earlier this week, saying i know people think they know who im picking but i do not know. We have to let the process play out. You can make sure whoever he pick picks can marry the relationship and president obama had and can jump in and be president on day one. We will have to wait and see. The other concern i have im not saying whether they have to be black or latino or white is the attorney general and the Justice Department. When we are Ahmaud Arbery with the case in louisville. I worked and others in the Civil Rights Community worked with obama and all the way through. We needed a Justice Department we can depend on that will look fairly and squarely, not putting a hand on the thumb on the scale either way investigating civil rights cases. We need the president ial candidates to say what kind of Justice Department will they have. Well, we have said what kind of Justice Department we will have. I encourage people to go to our website www. Joebiden. Com and read our criminal justice plan. You can also find a section in our plan, the joe biden plan for black america. Vice President Biden has committed to making sure that we are underscoring not just Civil Rights Division and the department of justice, the Civil Rights Division across his administration. He is committed to putting judges on the bench that reflect the community, taking a hard look and making sure that they are africanamerican judges on the bench, qualified judges on the bench. He has committed to putting a black woman on the supreme court. But let me tell you something very specific because you mentioned ferguson. We talked about baltimore. It was the obama biden Justice Department that went in and had the ability to investigate and hold Police Departments accountable across this country from ferguson to baltimore and many places in between. Eric holder did a lot of that work. And that was because of something called pattern and practice. Something frankly that was written into the crime bill all of those years ago. Vice President Biden criminal justice plan calls for prosecutors to the office. Yis that important . The prosecutors office, they had the videotape. It was not until that we saw the tape that america saw the tape that black people, the internet got a hold of the tape that something happened. There is currently not a mechanism to hold these prosecutors offices accountable. A joe biden Justice Department will. In addition to that, he will create a passport on prosecutorial that will be pulled out from under that will give a hard look across the country to make some comprehensive changes. I have to go. I do know about baltimore and others, the consent decrees. I was in those meetings leading to that and i can say that joe biden was a part of making that happen. That is true. I will not, though, say that i favored the crime bill. That was the in the crime bill and a lot wrong angle we already debated on that but i did march on that crime bill for the record. Thank you for being with me. Great to have Simone Sanders of the Biden Campaign on. Thank you. President trump is continuing to attack mailin voting and especially democratcontrolled states that are expanding the practice. Joining me now are two political strategists ali beverly who is republican and then democrat rick tyler. Rick, why do you think the president is so obsessed with this whole question of mailin voting when even when they forced the inperson voting in wisconsin . The republican lost. If he is thinking he gets a fairer shot politically, that didnt work out too well for him. What is this obsession that this is going to be a rigged election . Its not going to be a rigged election now. Thats what he wants you to believe. Thank you for having me on, rev. When is he worried about the Convention Wisdom of those who talk trump when you have mailin ballots there is more participation which is what we are supposed to want and more participation means that we would have that it would disadvantage him somehow. He puts out voter fraud even though he votes in mailin, even though mitt romney was voted in in a mailmailedin state. Gardner was a republican and he won in a mailedin ballot. Mailedin ballot is way for people to be able to vote, exercise their right to vote and be safe about it. It keeps lying about the secretaries of state are sending out ballots. They are not sending out ballots. They are sending out applications for ballots. If you think about it when the application comes in and you match the signature and the address and you mail it to an address, its as safe as inperson voting by any measure. Let me go to you, miss beverly. The Washington Post is breaking down the changes that nearly 30 states have made to their voting systems, more than 40 million americans can temporarily cast an absentee ballot due to covid19. Is that a good thing and seems to be a trend that is going to be set in for the november election . Absolutely. Absolutely, reverend. It is an important trend because, as ive shared and congresswoman bass shared on the show earlier on your show, it shouldnt be the burden of people choosing between their lives hair thae and their heal. What donald trump is trying to do is impress voters and also trying to lay a foundation for potentially challenging an outcome if there is an overwhelming victory in favor of the democrats. So he is trying to lay his predicate for challenging the election because he knows he cant win fairly and squarely. This is just one more tool in the republican now trump playbook to depress the turnout and to curtail the franchise. He knows he is slipping in the polls, he is slipping by eight points in the polls. He knows that the economy is in the tank and that was his saving grace for reelection. So he is moving to what he knows best which is bullying and intimidating and trying to confuse the truth. To get turnout, let me direct this back to you. To get turnout, you need to turn people on to turn them out. What is the democratic strategy in your opinion or what should it be to get turnout, particularly in the black community . They must get a bigger turnout in some of the key states that they didnt get last time. Thats right. Well, in part, its just demonstrating the ways in which donald trump, as a president , has a play on the black community. That is the starting point. But it finishes, i believe, with that robust agenda that Simone Sanders just laid out. As youve mentioned before, Vice President biden has a robust 22page plan for the Africanamerican Community. Its important that both he and his surrogates are communicating not just what he did during the obama biden administration. Important Building Blocks to trying to achieve equity. But what his plans are now for tackling structural racism. And youve mentioned this before, rev, and im on your team. You can energize the black vote and africanamerican women, in particular, by selecting an africanamerican Vice President ial candidate. Rick, what is the trump strategy in your opinion im not saying you would agree with it or that you support it, but what is going to be their strategy to try to come back and deal with the fact that they are now, according to the polls, behind biden . How do they turn this around . They only have one strategy left, ref, because they were going to run on the low unemployment and a roaring stock market. We know now a lot of these jobs, every day that goes by, these jobs are not coming back. Its going to take years for this economy to fully recover, if it ever does. Its certainly not going to happen by november. He has to make this a choice election. He knows that he is unpopular. He knows that he mishandled, whether he knows it or not, he did mishandle the covid virus and africanamericans have paid that price more than any other community. So he has to make biden the worst choice. And so its just going to get really ugly. He has thrown so much against biden but hell continue to do it. It started with hunter and then biden is a communist and the more accusations he throws out the more he muddies the water and people just dont believe any of it. You know, that is exactly right about trump and i wish i had mentioned it. He is looking for an excuse, not to win the election. In fact, i dont think i didnt think he thought he was going to win the last election because against hillary clinton, he talked about fraud then. All he is talking now is about fraud because he wants an excuse to say that he was denied the election because he was cheated out of it. That is the whole point. I have to leave it there. Thank you both for being with us. Coming up, two packaged delivery drivers say they were confronting racism on the job and were fired after posting the video of the incident to social media. We have got more cases of alleged discrimination bubbling up during this pandemic. This week Freight Company fedex is under fire after two black delivery drivers in georgia have gone public with their claim that they were terminated for posting a now viral video of alleged racial harassment from a white customer. Fedex has since issued a statement that reads, in part, we are offering employment while investigating to ensure and appropriate outcome. Joining me now is darnell lundy, one of the drivers, now suing fedex over alleged wrongful termination and civil rights attorney ben crump, mr. Lundys attorney who brought this case. Mr. Lundy, you put this out and upwards of 7 Million People have looked at this on social media. What happened . First of all, i want to say thank you, reverend al, for allowing me to be on your show to give my side. In a nutshell, i deliver my route is in the leesburg, georgia, area. And so we ride up to this residence, pull up to this residence house. You can see he has like gravel dirt driveway. So when i pulled up in the driveway, the right side of my tire kind of got over in his grass and we delivered the package. And so as soon as we delivered the package, he proceeded to storm out of the house just cursing us, you mother fers, you black mother fers, what you doing . Get the f off my grass. He was making his way around to me and proceeded to just keep cursing and i was looking at him like what is going on here . He is like you on my fing grass. I was saying to myself, you know, what is going on here . And then i said to him, i said, sir, you dont have to talk to us like that. And so he was like, what you going to do . You going to to woop my he took his glasses off and threw them grass and waving us on saying come on, come on. He called his wife to call the police at that time. I proceeded to back out of his yard and when i got in the road is where the he just was cursing, calling us all type of names. His wife was cursing in the doorway as well. So when the police came, you see the video. It looked like i was pulling out but i was pulling to the side of the road about two house up because the police was coming and im speaking kind of swift because i know we dont have that much time. The Police Officer that was onsite, first, a young black priver. He got my testimony and then a white Police Officer came to assist him. When they got my story, they went to him and because he was trying to come up there where we were but the Police Officer made him stay where he was, but when they went down there, when they went to where he was, i sat on the back of my vehicle on the tail end. So i was listening to what he was saying. He proceeded to tell them a number of things but what caught my attention is when he says, he said to me its those type of people that i fear that when im at work, they would break in my house and harm my wife. I was like, wait a minute. Let me go to your attorney and ill come back to you, mr. Lundy, because it was the other partner that worked with mr. Lundy that was videotaping. And they were terminated when this videotape went public. Fedex said they did not work for them for fedex, they worked for an independent contractor. So what is it that you are saying that you want fedex to do . Why are you seeing fedex . Well, reverend al, its a wrongful termination because even though they were disrespected and degraded on that tuesday afternoon when they delivered the package, they were even greater disrespected and degraded by fedex on that wednesday morning when he got to work, him and antonio were told that Corporate Headquarters in washington, d. C. Said terminate both of them because they did not their actions were not consistent with fedex standards. So fedex directed the contractor to terminate them . Is twha youre saying . Absolutely. And darnell and antonio both have proof of that. The fact of the matter simply is this. You can learn a lot about the character of an individual or corporation when nobody is watching and when nobody was watching, reverend al, they terminated these two africanamerican essential front line workers who were confronted with racial an mist. Fedex needs to know that black people all across america with hold them accountable if they dont address this immediately with darnell and antonio, and we will get our packages delivered by brown u. P. S. As a message. Mr. Lundy, fedex has said in a statement they offered you and your partner a job while they investigated. How do you respond to that . Reverend al, i also will say this. They offered them a job where they said they were never fired and they didnt do anything wrong. Even the police said they didnt do anything wrong. So why were they terminated in the first place . As this occurred and we are getting incidents from various companies, youre dealing with on the ground essential workers. What you do, mr. Lundy, is essential. And one of the reasons when attorney crump brought this to us, that it caught our eye. Is youre dealing with in the middle of a pandemic. Youre out there at great risk in terms of working, doing essential work and to be treated in this kind of hostile way for no reason is something that ought to alarm everyone. Absolutely. Like i said, reverend al, we are out here putting our life on the line, making sure that people have what they need, you know, and then to be treated like this with such language from a resident because of being on your grass and then it was so humiliate, i felt violated, i felt disrespected as a man. But i just want to point this. I felt more disrespected with how fedex handled this situation because not even giving me a chance to plead my side, just fired. And, you know, that was even more of a letdown and more of a disrespect. That hurt even worse because i stand with them every day but they couldnt stand with me this day. And that hurt. Attorney general crump, when you hear your client say ehe wa called a black so and so and then he heard him say these are the kind of people that would do all of these kinds of things, is that where youre claiming the discrimination . Yes, sir, reverend al. Fedex needs cultural civil training by civil rights like yourself and other matters. When we get to the crux of the matter we need to know the corporations will stands by their minority employees who are essential front line workers when they are more being confronted with racial an miss. We have to know they wont be tolerated by this behavior of people confronting their employees and dont abandon your employees. I have to leave it there. We will follow this up on all sides. Thank you both. We are moving on. Still to come, nba legend and influential black Business LeaderMagic Johnson has stepped up to support black and latino Small Business owners, as you heard on this show last week during the pandemic with muchneeded loans. I speak to one of the Business Owners benefiting from those loans. That is ahead. Hose loans. That is ahead. I recommend nature made vitamins. Because i trust their quality they were the first to have a vitamin verified by usp. An independent organization that sets strict quality and purity standards nature made, the 1 pharmacist recommended vitamin and supplement brand the 1 pharmacist recommended youre having one more bite no one more bite kraft. For the win win. No uh uh, no way come on, no no nnnnono only discover has no annual fee on any card. There is much more to discuss here on politics nation. But, tonight, make sure you also watch this at 7 00 p. M. Eastern. My colleague kasie hunt will be joined by a legendary veteran of american politics, democratic strategist james carville. Now here is nba legend Magic Johnson on politics nation last week. These are incredible businesses, Small Businesses that have been in the pillar of our community that also employee a lot of, like you said, black and brown people in our community. So what we did was we came together in a partnership, nba capital and e qurks i we want to make sure small minority businesses got small Business Loans. They dont call him magic for nothing. The pandemic decimating Small Businesses the Paycheck Protection Program has been struggling to meet huge demand efficiently. So Magic Johnsons equitrust teamed up with National Network with me and nbe capital with Rafael Martinez as their partners with 100 million, focused on pp loans to minority and womenowned businesses. Joining me now is junior lantigue find of why ease pizza and recipient of the mbcp expedited benefits that will benefit 31 employees. Im glad to bring this on. When we saw people announcing this and all of our roles in it, you are an example of the expediting of it. Tell us what this did for you and your company. It helped us out a lot, reverend. Thank you for having me on. A pleasure to be here. It was phenomenal. We got in contact with capital and rafael expedited it very rapidly. I was honored. I didnt think it was going to be that quick. Because we applied on various Bank Institution and it do not work that i mean, it didnt work as efficient. Not as efficient, im sorry. But rafael made it happen very quick. Now some estimates say that up to 42 of pandemicrelated layoffs could be permanent. Do you think this loan has helped your company save off results like this . Absolutely. This is something that is historic and amazing we were able to pull off, and i think that with the help that upon us, its a great move. Now, how important is it to you to see fellow Small Businesses like you have under 50 employees be able to get help like this in an expedited fashion that rafael and magic have made possible . Because some people cant stay in business long enough for the long process and going through the big banks and others giving them stalls and sometimes denying them any help at all. Its very difficult and its very hard. You have to be very patient and very determined. We have to find a way the institutions are able to help Small Businesses. Im very grateful for the opportunity and how it worked out with mb capital. You know . Its if we are able to understand the system, we are going to be able to make it happen a little better, but its just so hard for minority Business Owners to actually get it done, you know . So we have to have people that are able to help us like mbe capital, that they are able to expedite this as far as they did. Paycheck protection loans will help keep your employees paid for eight weeks. Is that enough to keep your doors open or do they need to see more resources made available to Small Businesses . I do believe we do need more. We think there has to be changes there. Its difficult for 75 of that money has to be used for only payroll. You have to think about your rent, your lights, and your other expenses that the business entailed. But i dont think that that is enough time. We just have to find a way how to reinvent ourselves as we have been doing. What does this mean to your employees that now they can know that they at least, for those weeks involved, will be paid and youre talking about employees that have families and have responsibilities that, before this came through, didnt know what was going to happen, i imagine. Very happy. Happen, i imagine . They are very happy. Thank god now we were able to get a contract where we were able to provide meals for seniors from harlem, hamilton heights, washington heights, and inward now expanding to the bronx and thank god as well mbe capital were able to finance the money as well so we could be able to buy our products and expand our production. Immigrants that came to this country from other places and were discriminated against and still are treated in a certain unfair, unequal way gave their lives. Remember all that gave their lives. And remember them so we can treat people equally because they fought for that equality and died.
