With the Power Outages. In l. A. It was felt in las vegas. On a different level. Youll see things swaying and people walked out of the restaurants or houses or where ever. This is earlier in ridge crest where a house caught fire. Everybody did make it out safely. I think come daylight well hear more about the devastation. That is in this particular area. A man that molly spoke with earlier described his house as sliding off the foundation. And he lost his home. He went around and checked on neighbors and got them out. And animals out. Which is what everybody there is doing now. Checking on neighbors. Thats what theyre advised to do. And sit tight. We dont know scientists dont know at this point how long these after shocks are going to last. Its about 100 miles away from the san andreas fault. That fault has nothing to do with this. Thats what the scientists told us earlier. Seismologist who has been keeping us updated was saying this is a con vvergence of different faults. Faults that are spreading. Every earthquake is an opportunity to learn what works and what doesnt. Everything about building structure, Warning Systems which did work. And also the cause of the quake themselves. Scientists have a will the of data to look over and theyll be poring over it. As they try to figure out what happened and what could happen next. This is in los angeles earlier. People are reacting fairly calm. Laughing actually. And the chandeliers are swaying. This is where the area where people describe it as being seasick. Theres a swaying. And a bit of vertigo. You can see the baseball game with the dodgers here. The camera is shaking. And the crowd was shouting. As they felt the power of the quake. Which is quite far from the epicenter. That shows you powerful it is. 7. 1 is a big number. It is the largest event in that area in 20 years. They have a lot to learn from this. There is good news. From l. A. The Los Angeles Fire Department has been busy since it happened. They have done a full scale inspection by both land and air. The infrastructure of the city and given it the all clear. Its still dark and hopefully the story will remain the same if the morning. They report there has been no loss of life. No serious injury. There have been calls for aid. And everything is going on as normal in l. A. So far. This is earlier in krijs. I believe. Ridge crest. People ran out so quickly. Theres a woman in her pajamas. A man calming down his dog. People standing outside not knowing whether its okay to go inside. There have been such a series of after shocks that theyre sitting put. Or checking on neighbors. And to see if they need help. While emergency vehicles are going around seeing if theres damage and if anybody is in need of help. Lets go back to holly. Who is at the epicenter of this. In ridge crest. And has well have her in a second. She has quite a few stories to tell. They were in a hotel covering the earthquakes and she was on the first floor, her crew on the third. Molly was awakened by the earthquake and the crew on the third floor said they were shaken awake. One out of bed. Things were falling off the shelves. Is she on . Okay. Lets go back to doctor jones. Who is a sieismologist and she s keeping us up to date. It can be high lie variable. In fact in a number of cases where the epicenter is located has a smaller amount of slip. If theres a huge variability at the end of the fault you see less than the middle of the fault. Because its tapeering off before it ends. And this does appear to be at the southern end of the rupture zone. Hopefully theyll be able to get out maybe tomorrow or the next day. And look along other sections of the rupture. This is a dramatic picture. Fortunately they were able to get out their tonight. Presumably i think these guys and gals are going to be working throughout the night. To gather as much as they can. We should see more of this tomorrow . I suspect so. Yeah. How many people out there . I dont have an exact count. Probably ten to 15. Maybe more. Theres a few of them from the u. S. Gs. Theres geologists from Southern California earthquake center. Which is all the universities. Were seeing scientists from a lot of the other institutions will be there. You dont get many chances to collect this data. I ran into geologist everywhere i went. They were there casually. Because they got to see was what was happening. At what point do the people become activated and a net work of information . Its actually very difficult logistically to coordinate this. The u. S. Gs teamed up to take the lead on this. Which is typically whats done in this situation. There are a lot of other geologists and scientists who can help out. They are actually setting up a commander Coordination Center in the field. So that people know where to go. Theyre not stepping on each others toes and use the resources most efficiently. There used to be a time when it was more chaotic. We try to coordinate. We set up a clearinghouse and were starting to even the geologists come and start having apps to share the information. Each quake with e get further down that digital spectrum. The depth of the earthquake again. Perhaps ten miles deep . Does that define the intensity. No. Thats just where it started. Just a couple minutes ago, many times the epicenter or the hype center the location of depth may have a small amount of slip relative to the fault. As it propagates across the fault it can grow. You can get larger displacements. This picture the is proof it clurp ruptured to the surface. Have the percentages changed . No. When you talk about the this being a 7. 1 there. What is it were feeling in l. A. . Roughly. The magnitude doesnt depend on the location. Its a 7. 1 period. Theres no location to that. To describe what we feel we talk about intensity. It looks like it was 3 to 4. In the l. A. Area. Depending on where you were. The after shock sequence is not a surprise. Its vigorous. But in line. Not surprising maybe not anticipating. Thats within the ballpark . In california, Southern California would expect to have a magnitude 7 once every 15 to 20 years. The last was 20 years. We expect a six every three years or so. And the big e surprise is we have gone 20 years without a six. Is this is more think of this as a return to what california is supposed to be doing. The last 20 years was a standard. This part of california the valley starting from here up through to mammoth and to reno is characterized by these earthquakes. There have been multiple sequences with sevens. With the large very act i have after shocks. So this is thats far from unusual for the area. Just to point out. Follow along with dr. Jones was saying. In 1876, we had an earthquake just to the north. 1827. The magnitude estimated 7 and a half to 8. Very large. Historically just maybe about 50 miles north of this activity. Its not in the historical record this level of activity is not impressive. When we talk about the probability. 5 is the je ngeneric number. On average over the area. The ability to have what youll be triggering if were seeing a lot of after shocks, the numbers go up a bit. When you have earthquakes you tend to have earthquakes. This is an active sequence. After shock goes up with the over all number. This is probably this was a 7. 1. 7. 0 would be an after shock. I cut you off. Can you give a specific locater of where that is . I apologize i dont have a reference on that. It is southwest of along highway 178. I have received word that cal transclosed the highway. They need to do repairs. Between ridge crest and along highway 178. How close to where yeah. So as far as we can tell. We have a message. This is just a text message from a geologist in the survey. And he said southwest of highway 178. Rob is marking highway 178. And because we have that fault structure, we can see it its right lateral motion. Its on the northwest fault. The southwest fault is left lateral. What the geologist track out there. What does that look like . Theyre going out they take pictures. And they document. At this particular location and measure it. This is about 30 centimeters of slip. About one foot. And thats one of the important pieces that will be put together is whats the offset as a function going down the fault. They actually have very sophisticated equipment. Where they can 4. 5. Where they can measure in great detail. They take out images of the structures and can digitize that. And get previcise view. Theres a wealth of data that will be able to look at and get a detailed picture. What would yor questions be about this fault . My question . Well. Oh wow. Curious about that. Theres actually a number of questions in terms of the ground motion that are radiated from faults. As they break to the surface. Theres indications that the ground motions are lower. Than they might be expected from ruptures that are buried. Talking about the north ridge earthquake. There was a buried fault. It was very energetic. The magnitude was 6. 7. It was incredibly strong shaking. This earthquake its going to be interesting to see. Its a 7. 1. The ground shaking in the preliminary indications for this magnitude the shaking maybe lower than is typical. Ill note that for the 6. 4 yesterday thats also the case. It broke up to the surface. In the ground motions were lower than what might be expected for the average 6. 4. Thats important if we can understand that. And be able to better forecast what might happen in the next theres an unusual point. On the 6. 4 the rupture moved down the fault more slowly an average. And maybe that contributes to the lower ground motion rather than breaking through. We dont know yet. How fast it ruptured down the fault. Ta will help us address some of the pictures. And were lucky well have a different rupture speed and compare how the ground motions look. Would it appear to be opening up. Would you see it move . Sfwl we think you see it move. Theres two different comparable things that happen. One is the rupture which starts at the hyper center and goes across the fault. Very fast. Two miles a second. If you were standing next to the fault you would see something that went from that horizon to zoom to the to the other horizon. The fault is actually moving side to side. That rupture would go on that. Like a zipper. And the fault would be going about a couple feet maybe three feet per second. Sliding by. You would see a zip and then the two sides of the fault. You could see slide by. It make take two or three seconds to happen. Last question. Have you ever these cracks big enough for a person to fall in . Its not opening up. It it could open up you will not have a earthquake. Like snapping your finger. It makes the air vibrate. Try making sthnapping your fings with it opened up. There would be no waves off of it. There are reports where people witnessed the fault move. Very dramatic. Obviously very strong shaking too. Youll have difficulty standing up and so forth. Anyway. Last question . Estimate of the likelihood of another quake above a 7. Do you have an estimate of another quake happening later than this 7. 1. Thats just a few percent lower. Greater than 7 includes everything bigger. Its on the order of 8 or 9 . People will be feeling this for quite sometime. People down here will be feeling sizable after shocks. Theres potential the ones above 5. They seem to be felt if you are sitting quietly in l. A. Were certain well have more of that size somewhere over the next few days. The 6. 4 and after shocks were on a south wes motion. These are going northwest. Would you expect the rest of the after shocks to be in northwest . On both structures probably. You will be back tomorrow morning . Not me. Okay. Thank you. I believe there somebody will be here. 11 00. We have been checking in with d. Jones a seismologist and robert graves. They have been keeping us up to date on what happened in Southern California. Yesterday. And today. Encouraging news from the people who study this. This is not unusual. Terrifying. Depending on where you were. Not unusual. It happens about every 20 years the last one was 20 years ago. So if youre just joining us, the scientists themselves are trying to understand this. Were trying to keep up. What happened yesterday in the Southern California area was actually called a fore shock. Of 6. 4 magnitude followed by after shock of 5. 0. Which led to the 7. 1 actual earthquake. That happened there earlier today. And there have been a whole series of after shocks in the whole area ever since. These are part of the same sequence as they have described. Basically its happening on a series of fault lines. Several of them. That are spreading adding to the situation. Its not terribly unusual. People in los angeles describe sort of a swaying. Feeling seasick. Or being on a boat. You can see things swaying. Chandeliers and people leaving homes and restaurants. Similar story in las vegas. Swaying and people running outside. The epicenter in ridge crest it is described as being extraordinary violent. That is where the 7. 1 occurred. Other places is being felt as an intensity of about a three. Molly is in ridge crest. She was there to cover yesterdays event. And was actually awakened out of bed by tonights event. Startled actually. Thank you for joining us again. Tell us the situation there now. Every time you describe this swaying the rolling motion. Thats felt in las vegas. Its so unbelievable to me it was so violent here. It was a jerking violent motion. That i have never experienced before. It was as if my room was on hinges. Im going to what was that . We lost your microphone for a second. We can hear you now. Ill bring in warren cooper. You live in the area. I want to quickly give the viewers a sense of what it was like for you. I described what it felt like for me. Where were you . I was believe it or not my friends from las vegas were up here checking on me. Wanted to maybe sure i was okay. We were at my shop and having a good time. The cars started rocking back and forth. My buddy were watching this cell phone tower just sway. Dont move. Just stop just relax. And thats when we just let it settle and we buttoned up the shop and started doing our thing today. You said earlier you realize you were outside in the safe place. You were not near tall buildings. Do not go near those buildings. You needed your friends to stay put. Stay put and watch. We were in the middle of the backyard. Keep your eyes open. You describe your house. What happened. My house is a mess. Yesterday my fish tank smashed. Shattered all over the living room. All my dressers were caved in. Tvs on the floor. Today it was worse. Today i was lucky enough i was the only one yesterday on the foundation. Today i wasnt so lucky. Your house is essentially a Triangle Foundation and slid off. The whole corner my back corn e of the house is in the dirt. The corner dropped four foot. Its not a pretty sight. I just grabbed my dog and shut the water off. And the gas. And i started checking on other people. Describe you went door to door. And a an apartment complex. I live in the county. I checked on that. Im a super for apartments. It was we got there everybody was crying. It was bad. I had my buddy from las vegas. He was behind me. I started barking and said welfare check. Beat on peoples doors. Make sure everybody is okay. I wasnt to the water main and gas main and shut them off. We had structure damage. It was pouring. We pulled everybody out of the unit. Youre a here helping volunteer. I knew this was a place to be. This was a place i needed to be. I came in here and said where do you want me. Help direct traffic and thats what i have been. Have you been talking to friends in other parts of the city . We had a crew in the mobile home park. And the house fire. Everybody is a lot of things are shaken up. Its a lot of mess. Theres a lot of water heaters fell off. Water lines broke. Things like that. My other buddy was here. Hes running around for me and checking on my dad. He was in the hospital. His house is a mess. I have had so many people call and text me. Is everything okay. They hear my story or see me. The house is not so good. Theyre like i have a place. Its unbelievable. We spoke with a man earlier today. It was a 28,000 people kpunt community and its a tight community. Her advice is knock on doors check on family. Text people. Thats going to help the emergency services. You have to go. Go do what you need to do. That was warren cooper. He lives nearby. He lost his house and hes outside the hospital volunteering helping out. This is an unbelievable community. We always hear about the strength in small communities after disaster like this. He described everyone checking on everyone else. Making sure strangers have a place to go. Its extraordinary. Amazing. He has a smile on his face and helping after what he lost. Its incredible. This is a 28,000 member community. Its a very tight knit area. And they have about 1,800 Power Outages you can see. Its nighttime. Its dark there because the lights are out. The hospital right behind her is actually the only place in the area that had a generator and in full working area. Where are you . Thank you. Lets go to joe friar in los angeles. Bring us up to date. First of all we can tell you a little over an hour ago kern county officials held a News Conference with preliminary information. Obviously its still a fluid situation. Its dark. Theyre trying to assess the situation. Officials said there were no fatalities reported. They were getting medical aid calls. There was backlog. Only call 911 if you have an actual emergency. People were calling trying to get information. That was one important thing. No reports of major gas leaks Power Outages. No reports of major Building Collapses. They admit they were assessing the situation. And a lot of checking to do. Wefr heard reports and seen mobile home parks heavily impacted by what happened. Fires have been taking place and roads cracked heavily. Rock slides are taking place. One of the major highways the state route 178 has been closed in some areas because of rock slides. We want to talk about the probability of what might happen next. Yesterday we experienced the 6. 4 which the a the type was the strongest we had seen here in Southern California in 20 years. We were told theres a one in 20 chance, 5 chance there could be an earthquake stronger than that. The odds with low. Thats what happened. We saw a 7. 1 late on friday. Once again there is still about a one in 20 chance we could see an earthquake Even Stronger than the 7. 1. We expect to feel a number of after shocks in the coming days. Many will be in the fives. The kind of thing that maybe here in los angeles some people might be able to feel. We might see some of magnitude six. I was actually in ridge crest earlier this morning at the time we had a 5. 4. Something you could feel. Didnt cause damage. That at the time was the strongest after shock. We now know all of thos
