Outer bands from this storm. I imagine cape may, new jersey are going to be feeling these effects not all that long. The tropical moisture is being sucked up ahead of this storm. Were expecting about one to three, maybe four inmp rainfall event. There are flood watches in effect. Its been a very wet start to the fall season on the east coast. The worst destruction is on the boarder. Some of that mess is heading for albany, georgia. I got yelled at a bunch of times. Thats how we pronounce it. Its 6 01 30 on the east coast. We should give a top of the hour update. Have we had any changes in wind speed and intensity. We were at 125. Now were at 115. This is the last hour it will be a major hurricane. Once its down to 110, it will be category 2. Im sure theres Power Outages. Im sure there will be a lot of tree damage in was the 5 00 update. About every hour were taking about 10 miles an hour off the peak winds. This is 2 00 a. M. Close to m macon. Macon could go through the center. There will be winds that will go gusty, calm and swimp aroutch a directions. At that time were really done with the significant winds. Here is the wind fall. 69 miles an hour. We still see significant damage. Coastal areas can be pretty gusty as we go throughout the night into the morning. Dont be surprised you get some sporadic outages. Its nothing crazy but winds in the 40 to 50 miles an hour. We wake up with a storm near augusta. Thats probably why winds are a little lighter. Columbia and south carolina, could get windy on the north side. Theres charleston at 48. During the day well bring the winds up to north carolina. This is a still acra crazy map. Were all the way through Central Georgia with hurricane warnings. This is the first time in 120 years. The biggest hurricane droughts from getting by a major hurricane has been the state of georgia. We mostly have been thinking savannah, brunswick. Who knew we would sneak a major hurricane into south western portions of georgia. Thats whats going on right now. For the most part were looking at two to four inches of rain coming up the eastern seaboard. Let me ask you the other question thats now like Everything Else in our lives, charged with political sensitivity. We dont know how many people died from the storm and people are already at it. The u. N. Climate report came out this week. This storm and the political news. What was so urgent about it was it says like an approaching storm, the first real catastrophic effects of Climate Change will be felt by 2040. In other words, most of the people alive on the planet today will experience it during their lifetime. As you mentioned, way before landfall, people were saying we didnt used to get storms like this. There had been storms like this. Had there been storm ts this frequent like this, we did go from charley in 2009. It was one of the longest droughts we had. Since then maria, irma, harvey, florence. It seems like every one has been a pretty big deal in the last two years. Its all about messaging. If its outside our lifetime this is the governor of florida, rick scott. We heard of significant impacts at tindale air force base and many communities along the coast. As Hurricane Michael continues its destructive path through the panhandle and leaves our state, were turning 100 of our focus on search and rescue and recovery. We need every family to help with this. Listen to local officials. We could still have flash flooding and tornadoes. We heard of two devastating tornadoes. The weather is still extremely dangerous. Do not take a risk. Be safe. We also need people to be very safe with generators. Do not put a running generator in your home. It is not safe. Do not get out on the roads until youre told its safe. We need the roads to be open for First Responders and search and rescue to do their jobs and save lives. Its not safe to leave your house, dont leave it. If you and your family made it through the storm safely, the worst thing to do is act foolishly and put yourself and your family in danger or keep law especialnforcement and resc workers from saving lives. Our First Responders are heroes in leaving their families to help others. We cannot help them enough. We are deploying a massive wave of response. Well be sending help from air, land and sea. This includes thousands of responders for power restoration, medical search and rescue, Law Enforcement, food and water distribution and every other critical resource. I was briefed by the u. S. Coast guard today and they are prepositioned with critical assets and resources. Along with our thousands of rescue workers, local Law Enforcement has 1800 personnel ready the deploy. Right now you till utilities ar reporting more than 192,000 homes and businesses without power. Well have updated numbers tlou throughout the night. Lets all stay safe and watch this storm closely through the night. The entire nation the love and support we sevreceive from many has been overwhelming. We are appreciative of the resources and prayers that have been offered. On behalf of the gulf coast of the great state of florida or to thank the nation for your prayers, following the storm we must all come together and work together. During disasters floridans take care of each other. We saw this after matthew, irma and maria. Floridans are strong, resilient. We will recover and well do it together. Florida is unbreakable. We will get through this together. Hurricane michael cannot break florida. Visit floridadisaster. Org for emergency and assistance. Families can call the state emergency information line for assistance. Followed flcert for live updates. [ speaking in spanish ] ill answer any questions. Have you heard any reports of any fatalities at this point . We dont have any confirmed reports of fatalities right now. The earliest that search and rescue teams will be heading out . Were sending them out now. Search and rescue started out already. We talked about earlier, we have search and rescue that will be coming from the north down to the coast. We have the coast guard coming from the tampa area. I think they are in clearwater and from florida and will be doing our coast. Is there a specific area they are concentrating on right away or first off . Weve got teams. We broke it up into regions. We have teams going down into about eight regions. Its going to be coming down and they will meet up. Were getting information where theres problems. Weve already sent teams already started. Local readiness based on what youve seen. It came really fast. Everybody didnt evacuate. Im still traying we didnt lose anybody. That was disappointing that everybody didnt evacuate. I think in every storm you have to assess after you get finished. I think everybody should do it locally, federal and state, say what can we do better. This was a big storm. This was a big storm. Weve got significant damage. Well find out over time. One more question. There are several prison and detention facilities in this area. Some of them made arrangements before hand. Not all of them did. Have you heard from those facilities in doc. Whats their status now thats its starting to clear out . Weve heard some different corrections and prison facilities. Were following up and trying to make sure everybody is safe. Theyre still intact and no issue. We have some damage at some facilities. What ive been told so far has been some roof damage. Were sending teams to make sure everybody is safe. As far as inmates are concerned, they are secure . Ive not heard anything that they are not. I have heard theres some damage to roofs. If you look at the path, theres a lot of roof damage in that path. The big thing right now is were getting feedback. Where we have problems, were sending search and rescue teams right away. These teams are getting out there to assess the damage and to provide any resources anybody needs. Thanks, guys. Thanks, everybody. Briefing from tallahassee and the state Emergency Operation center. While the governor was talking, bill and i, along with you, were watching these drone pictures in the upper right hand frame and were able to take them full now. Im told this is panama city beach. You can see some single, double wide, Free Standing homes. You also see the trees snapped, all of them approximately the same height. Theyre all going to require tree surgeons to come in. If you ever paid for one tree to be pruned. That one on that house is like 2, 3,000 to get that done. Theres the have and the have notes as with every storm. That second row in the storm, every single one has a tree. Looks like one is split. The yellow to the left, look to to t two to the right. The standing water. Then the mos kquitok mosquit. Its interesting how a lot of these were snapped. Theres not many leaves or small branches left on some of these trees. Im surprised this is panama city beach. When we saw kerry, looked like they were in 60, 80, 90 miles an hour winds. Panama city is about 15 miles away. It was in like 100 to 120. I guess this this area must have gusted to 100 at one point. You can see how calm it is now. Just think as each home is a microcosm. Anything thats compromised the roof and brought in moisture. Lets say that 80 of the homeowners had the good sense to get out and they will come home and discover moisture and to bills point, youve got standing water limiting your access to your own street, your own neighborhood. You probably have to go through the national guard. It will be a good long time before youve got power. Power helps to dry things out. Power helps with safety especially at night. Its a cascade of things that can go wrong. You have people that evacuated. A lot of people on a tight budget at a hotel room, at a friends house. How long do you stay in those areas . How long will it take for temporary housing to set up. Insurance Company Tells you to wait until we get there and everything in there doesnt want to wait because of mold. A lot of people after katrina had problems with the temporary housing and how much money may have been put on it and not used correctly. What are conditions compared to the last time we spoke . You were talking about the really the regal, beautiful trees. All these beautiful trees that make this the southern graceful city it is. A lot of people in the city have left. They followed the advice of the city and left. This is emblematic. This is right on the edge of the campus of Florida State university. Were talking about the big bill a lot of these people will have to take up. This is a lot of damage. This looked like it fell against the building but this building seems to have not been damaged. As you can see, thats going to be a lot of work for a lot of people. This is whats happening all over the city on both sides of the street and streets throughout tallahassee. These really beautiful, beautiful old trees. I think youll notice theres something missing here and thats rain. Thats because all day long we have been seeing what meteorologist would call bands of this storm. Theres been sort of whipping wind from time to time. Even 30 minutes ago we barely felt any wind. Theres been driving rain and then nothing. Thats because this storm has been coming in whips and bands around and around. Its been very variable temperature and weather all day long. Well see that all throughout the night. A lot of what were seeing here, a lot of this rescue work. When you and i talk about rescue workers and First Responders, we dont include the people are going to have to clean up this mess. Thats what this city is going to have to be looking at. A lot of these First Responders include the Municipal Workers who deal with down trees, repair power lines. When we were sitting in our hotel last night, there were cops, firefighters. Thats what the city was putting up. There are also people who work for the power companies. There are people part of what the city considers to be First Responders. They are ensuring the safety of the people here by trying to get the lights on as fast as they can. Thank you. We were heartened to see some lights on the building behind you. We dont point out often enough, the very first task of every First Responder is to leave their own first priority. That is their home and their family to head out and help others. Just at this moment, standing water in the streets and you see just what happens during a storm like this. Someone has made the determination that the line in the water is not live but vehicles are nonetheless plowing through standing water. Super bo signs get blown down. Po poles get blown over. Tammy. Reporter albany is what ive been told. Earlier we talked about the flint river and i wanted to give you a first hand look at it. This is what floods in this town. Right now there are not as concerned about it because its lower than what it normally is. The river rises and comes up into this area. This is the main concern with the flint river. Its gotten so high at points that theyve had to rebuild a bridge because the flint river has done so much damage to it. Theyre concern with this one is people are in homes are in mobile homes, are in homes that arent sturdy. They are saying if you feel like your home isnt safe, get out. The state of georgia, they are prepa prepared. They are waiting for the hurricane to come this way. Its already done a lot of damage as we have seen in the panhandle. People in georgia are just waiting. Thank you for that. Were look at the map and as far north as america. They are all in the watch and warning box. It remains hard to believe. Mr. Mayor, whats been the Damage Assessment . Weve been very, very fortunate here. Were about 75 miles west of where the eye came in near the air force base. Weve had our city officials out and looking. We have two lift stations that are down. We have some dock damage. A few trees down. Other than that this town came through beautifully. Can you remember a time when you had less notice that a cat 4 tomorrow was coming . I cannot. This snuck up on us in a worry. They had the city butt oned dow in record time. Those that needed to evacuate did or made provisions to hunker down. We have come to very safely. Were blessed. I know you have a lot of vessels docked there. Were people able to secure them enough. I think so. Im looking at the intercoastal waterway, i see a number of boats docked in the middle which is normally what they do. They get them away from land based docks. They are better off if they can double or triple anchor them out in the channel. Those seem to come through just fine. We did have a report earlier of someone riding it out in their boat. They did not fair too well. The boat came ashore. The occupant was okay. His boat was basically destroyed but hes fine. Were happy to hear some good news. I hope the recovery is quick. I hope everything goes well in your community and its one of the quirks of weather that you were on the good side of a bad storm. Really appreciate it. Bill, youve brought with you the highest u. S. Landfall in terms of miles an hour. I think it was at like 4 00 a. M. This morning, i was like let me just google. Let me get the list up for the highest landfall winds that we ever had in this country. This is the list of the highest. We never want to do this. This camille was proof we could get catastrophic, huge storms like michael. This is mostly a mississippi problem. Andrew, south florida. That made landfall, 167 miles an hour. It was considered category 437 they d 4. They upped that making it a category 5. The labor day storm was in the late 1800s. Then we just fit in here. We can put right in here, Hurricane Michael. Number 4 on the list. Its going to be the number third lowest pressure on the list. Pressure is our measure of intensity. The lower the pressure, the stronger the storm. Here is a map that shows what we still have to go through. We have the hurricane warnings tonight. As we go up the map through the carolinas as we go throughout the day tomorrow. Were still in hurricane warnings but thing s have dramatically improved. Its slowly drifting up to the north. Were about to lose the eye. Five hours later we still have that eye. Everything is headed for the general direction of macon as we go throughout the hours. This wont be updated again until 11 00. Well see the storm weakening. Sometime after midnight hopefully becoming a tropical storm. Well watch the rain and windy event around norfolk and virginia beach. Then well say goodbye. The sun is about to set. We have some of the drones up to show you what some of the tree damage looks like. Here is whats lefrt of the et. This blue box is extreme wind warning. Its a new thing in the last three years. Its like the equivalent of a tornado going through a shelter in place. Were waiting to see if we will get another one issued to the north of that. Well wait to see as we go throughout the night. Were continuing to make progress. Its weakening. History has been made with this storm. We just dont know yet fatalities, injuries and what and how bad where the eye came on shore was. As Governor Scott was telling us, we know the air force base and mexico beach wads ts the arf greate esest impact. Im not a golfer for my concern of the health and safety of those around me. I cant help but notice your graphic goes up and over augusta over time. Are you telling me some of the mos
