Ever, be stopped. Not an everyday occurrence by in means. We can also show you this video on twitter. Youll see the suspects being walked out by authorities. Katy tur is joining me on the phone and benji sarlin. Put this in context for us what occurred tonight. Im not at reno. Im in North Carolina where trump had an event earlier in the day. Trump abruptly was rushed off stage by secret service in the middle of his remarks. It was unclear from the press Vantage Point which is in the press about 100 feet from where donald trump was. A man was escorted out. It is unclear what the man had to do with this, whether or not he was attempting to do something to donald trump at that moment after donald trump had been rushed off stage and the man had been escorted out. The crowd in the room, some of them left frankly. Some of them stayed. Many of them stayed and berated the press. Its unclear the situation that led to this. Ive spoken to a few secret Service Sources who say theyre going to theyre checking in on this, but in a typical situation like this if a man does pull a gun, im told the typical protocol in a case like this would be for the secret service to audibly yell gun. Not only as a candidate here, does the secret Service Detail directly around him here, but the entire room here. The fastest way to get that message across. If they do not do that, its because theyre unclear what the potential person that might do harm to the candidate has. They could potentially throw something. Was he trying to bum rush the stage . That is all very unclear at the moment, but theyre on guard for that sort of thing because president bush had a shoe thrown at him in 2008 during an iraqi press conference. On the trail, donald trump has had a tense situation at least once before in dayton, ohio, during the primaries. Secret service surrounded donald trump on stage at an airport hangar in dayton, ohio, when a person tried to hop over the bike rack, the fencing that surrounds the stage where donald trump does right. That was the last time that he was removed. I want to bring in benji sarlin and note that again while we were discussing the hypothetical scenario of when a weapon is pulled, just for viewers to understand, were at this point only calling this an incident. Neither the secret service nor the Trump Campaign has provided additional detail. Its a dramatic moment, benji. Here we are on saturday night, the weekend before the election. I wonder if you could speak a little bit about the brief statement that the Trump Campaign put out because while there is general protocol not to comment much on the details, they were clearly quick to try to praise the response to this. Exactly. The Trump Campaign has not put out much information on exactly what happened. Our own reporters are still awaiting word from the secret service and other sources to see if they can get anymore information. But the Trump Campaign was quick to praise the secret service for their hard work in protecting the candidate, protecting all the candidates, and as you can see trump was able to get back on stage pretty quickly. As usual, secret service doing their job in this case trying to protect him from a perceived threat or at least make sure nothing goes wrong, but we still have very few details on what exactly happened. We can say protesters often in the middle of the crowd are pretty much a mainstay at trump rallies. Depending on which city hes in, there have been periods where you can six, seven, eight protesters have an incident in the crowd and be led off. Its not hard to see how in theory, at least, someone causing some kind of protester incident could have set off alarm bells in some way. Perhaps if they were making a motion or too close to the stage. But again we really do not know whats happened yet. Thank you both for your reporting. Well update as we learn more. I want to go ahead and bring in our Politics Panel tonight. Mike maury, former Communications Director to chuck schumer, and a White House Correspondent for the hill, and a former aide to karl rove, and the most difficult to pronounce tonight. Youve worked for a president before. You can speak a little bit about an aspect of this that is interesting in a context of donald trump who everyone knows, whether you like him or not, to be a very brash and divisive type of candidate. But these are calls that are essentially made by the secret service, right . You can see that in the way they have come up to him they have made an action decision to remove him. Its not one theyre consulting him on. No, not at all. I think the Trump Campaign did the right thing. I havent said that very frequently during the course of this campaign, but in this instance they did the right thing. The secret service took care of their protocol. They acted the way that they should and got him out safely and soundly, which is their duty. And the Trump Campaign paid them the respect that they deserved. Sometimes there are political ramifications to these kinds of events depending on the aftermath. So far, i think everyone acted as they should. Mike, from a security standpoint, theyre not keeping in mind how close or how far off from the election. Ive covered a lot of these rallies. You have all kinds of andtics i the crowd. What was striking is how close in proximity it was to the candidate. Thankfully, he was quickly rushed off stage. Seems like he came back fairly quick afterwards, continued his remarks. That was perhaps a protester, someone angry in the crowd. I dont know for sure. One of the things thats been consistent about Donald Trumps rallies is the level of frustration and anger. Theyre a bit more of a robust crowd than a lot of other campaigns. Its not surprising there was that kind of reaction and see the reaction afterward and a lot of folks turned on the press as if somehow the press were at fault here, which seems par for the course for some of Donald Trumps rally. But the secret service did exactly what theyre supposed to do. It seems like they came right back afterwards. You always hope when you are reporting on a situation like this with limited information there wasnt anything worse than that because god forbid theres that kind of risk or threat at one of these events. I think we have exhausted what we know about it. If we learn more, we will update accordingly. We have a lot of folks in the field right now. This is a big weekend for us. Lets go a little more broadly into the politics of where donald trump is. If you believe the campaign, theyre feeling as good as they have felt in a while. Yeah, ive spoken to people on both sides. Democrats are really nervous. Is that because democrats generally are just a nervous type . I will acknowledge that and i have spoken to a lot of them this week. Theyre not taking anything for granted. They feel good about where they are. Theyve seen internal polling in the clinton camp. They feel okay. There are some states like michigan that make them a little nervous, but theyre going all out to make sure all their fingers are in dams and the holes arent leaking, i think, at this point. Theyre looking in a lot of different places. The panel is going to stay, but im going to get an update from the other side here. Hillary clinton spending this last saturday before the election with some very big geo tv events. Bon jovi and katy perry and steve stevie wonder. You want to really be involved in winning this election. Sign up to help because when your kids and grandkids ask you what you did in 2016 when it was all on the line, i want you to be able to say i voted for a better, fairer, stronger america where everybody has a chance at the american dream. Clinton campaign also making sure it says that it will hold onto michigan. Theyve added a stop there monday along with president obama going to ann arbor. Heres a look tonight about those final stretch strategies. We have tried to calibrate our schedule to be in states at the peak time for voting, so michigan almost all voting happens on election day. Pennsylvania, new hampshire, and even ohio. Our schedule is calibrated around that. Trumps is looks like hes just trying to go everywhere all at once. Thats why were spending time in michigan. Kristen welker in philadelphia. We wanted to play that not only because its brand new, but because hes making the argument while michigan is a state that democrats are supposed to win, if Hillary Clinton were losing michigan at all, were going there because of the calendar, not the margin. What can you tell us about that strategy . Reporter that is a little bit of spin. It is true that these states are about to vote. You dont have early voting in michigan. But what were seeing is the polls are tightening in michigan. Secretary clinton right now only has a fourpoint lead. Thats tighter than the Clinton Campaign wants. The reason why, ari, michigan, pennsylvania, the state where i am right now, thats a part of her firewall. These are states that she is banking on in order to get to 270. Shes going to michigan making sure all of our is are dotted, ts are crossed. Democrats getting a little bit jittery, but think about what happened in michigan during the primary. Bernie sanders pulled off that big upset victory because theres so many working class voter there is who took to his message. They think those voters may be giving trump a very serious look. Thats whats making the Clinton Campaign nervous. Theyre trying to prevent that from happening this time around. In terms of their broader strategy, ari, it comes down to energizing the obama coalition, minorities, africanamericans, latino voters. Thats why youre seeing them hold so many of these events in urban cities. We are in philadelphia tonight. Key to winning pennsylvania is making sure you get a heavy turnout of africanamericans in philadelphia. Last night we were in cleveland with beyonce and jayz. Same type of strategy playing out. I talked to a Clinton Campaign official who told me they are feeling confident. They are feeling focused. You had our colleague John R Ralston saying donald trump is dead in nevada. Seeing those huge swells of latino voters is giving them hope. They think that is going to be essential to a victory as well, but theyre not taking any vote for granted. One more point that makes the Clinton Campaign starkly different from trump. Its all hands on deck. Monday shell be right back here in philadelphia with the president and first lady, ari. Absolutely, not to mention jayz and beyonce. Kristen welker, thank you so much. Mike, you look at that point. Michael moore, who is no trump fan, was on air last hour saying michigan has been a problem for hillary for a long time. Heres the polling on these new added locations. This is where we really see what the campaigns are prioritizing. Michigan four points. The difference being we havent seen a democrat lose michigan in the president ial since 1988. What gives . I dont think youll see one this time, but what you are seeing is, look, michigan in particular the population is nonCollege Educated whites. Thats a pretty good place for donald trump to target. But were seeing africanamerican turnout it looks like is lower than they hoped it would be. Obviously, you dont have the first africanamerican president on the ballot this time. She has a lot of make up to do there. At the end of the campaign, the last couple of days, 270 win. You want to lock in what you know you have. It makes pretty good sense, but i think it is a little bit of spin to suggest that youre only going to michigan because were approaching election day. The fact is if it was totally locked up you probably would be heading to ohio instead. My guess is theyre trying to turn out every vote they can at the last minute. That rule essentially applies both for trump and for clinton. We see a natural tightening in the race. Its hard to think of a recent president ial race where there wasnt tightening in the week before. Michigan is not an early voting state, so to have both campaigns to go up there to gin up their base and make sure people turn out to vote makes perfect sense as opposed to swing states where a lot of early voting has occurred. In michigan, if youre trump tr you want to make sure your nonCollege Educated whites turn out. If youre hillary, you want to turnout the africanamerican vote. I think its perfectly natural that both candidates are there. Donald trump doesnt really have a strategy. Theyre just throwing everything at the wall. I think thats just an objective fact. We dont see data targeting or a real set of Strategic Decisions about where to deploy, let alone the ads where theyre being outspent. That would raise the question why is it getting close if youre running against someone who has a spaghetti strategy. The fact you have to send in bill clinton the other night to meet with ministers, thats a problem. He could have easily gone to another place. The fact that Michelle Obama and barack obama are going to philadelphia the night before the election, philadelphia. These are places that should be locked down. This is why democrats are really nervous. I would say to you i think when you have barack obama and Michelle Obama in your pocket in the last three days of an election you deploy them. Where do you deploy them . In predominantly africanamerican communities in swing states. But ann arbor is not predominantly black. Theres something else. Thats a part of a talking point weve heard, but isnt there more to it than that . Of course. Its no secret that Hillary Clinton has mhad trouble with millennials in this case. But barack obama can appeal to that group. You deploy the assets you have in the last three days. Barack obama is going to do a really good job of turning out africanamerican voters and in turning out the youth vote for her. If youve got them, use them. Always better the second time. Thank you all. I appreciate it. We are waiting for a statement from the secret service to get you exact information from a government perspective at least on that incident we showed you there. There is one poll that historically predicts winners in iowa. It was just released tonight. It shows donald trump with a sevenpoint lead over Hillary Clinton for iowas six electoral votes. Iowa has been a mixed bag for Hillary Clinton. She deadlocked with Bernie Sanders there in the caucus this year and then lost to obama in 2008. Tonights poll finds trump up amongst some young voters, besting clinton by five points with voters under 35. He lost the state just this year to cruz and then was venting his frustration around that time with iowans. How stupid are the people of iowa . How stupid are the people of the country to believe this crap . We should also note that to date iowa has only elected one woman statewide to congress. That was senator joni ernst. After hyping tricks up his sleeves two days before the fbi letter, Rudy Giuliani has now denied any advance knowledge of that infamous fbi letter that was sent last friday. The controversy continuing as other sources close to the fbi allegedly leaked false information to fox news which prompted an unusual on air retraction from host brett baier. Today, tim kaine dialled up the pushback on this pretty unusual story line. He said the disclosures show in his view that fbi agents are misusing their power to help trump. Whats come out since suggests theres more like to explain, that he knew the fbi was not only a leaky sieve, but there were people actively working to help the Trump Campaign. Joining me now is matt miller, a clinton supporter. We interview a lot of campaign surrogates. Were not necessarily coming to your f you for your support of Hillary Clinton. Here we are eight days out from this story when it first broke. What facts in evidence that suggest a problem in the fbis approach . Well, there are two things. I think theyre related. One i think we have evidence in the Public Record now that the director of the fbi, jim comey, made a mistake in how he handled this in raising this issue so close to an election. Second, i think we now have clear evidence that there are people inside the fbi that are leaking facts about ongoing investigations or in some cases investigations that maybe arent ongoing, but they want to be ongoing. I think some of that is happening independently of comey and some of that is happening because of the signal he has made at the top. It is okay to comment on matters. Both of those are very troubling. Both of those things shouldnt be happening in the final stages of a campaign. The president was asked about it here on msnbc in his interview with reverend al sharpton. He spoke about comey as well a
